Orca Continue To Explore The Space Of Prog Rock With New Single ‘Aquarium’

Described as a “cracking band” and praised for their “excellent production values” by music blog Progrockmusictalk, UK-based alt-rockers Orca have proven to be on top of their game. As pioneers and creators of the mysterious domain of ‘space metal’, the five-piece is steadily stepping up to the music industry’s spotlight.

Their fascination with space and discovering the unknown has always been part of their own musical exploration. By fusing melodic experimentation with hard hitting metal riffs, their new single ‘Aquarium’ (taken from the album ‘Universe’) is a muscular track, effervescing with a forthright and speeding energy. As a follow up to the similarly metal infused guitar styles and contemplative vocals of their first single ‘Amber’, this tune is a sensational marvel of progressive rock.

Listen here:

The song came about when singer Chris started exploring the emotions drawn from the cryptic and riddle-like rhythmic arrangement of a demo recording. ‘Aquarium’ is ultimately about desire, beauty, identity, sensuality, and connecting with the power of nature. The video for the single was shot in a real aquarium which the band describes as a “wonderful” and “entrancing” experience. The album is called ‘Universe’ as it was written while the band were travelling separately around the world, with each band member looking out to a different part of the night sky for inspiration.

With influences ranging from Deftones to Tool, the band has mastered the techniques of DIY and created a magnificent set of songs with little to no help from other producers. Their music touches upon the deeper questions in life. Orca describes their sound as being about “submission to the awe and power of the world, and the realization and self-actualization levels of awareness and consciousness.” Part of their musical diversity stems from the fact that Orca consists of a colourful mixture of different nationalities. Bassist Matt McGuinness is Irish, guitarist David Vezzoli from Italy, other guitarist Ben Murray-Smith from England but born in Brazil, drummer Kacper "Drum Kid" Stachowiak from Poland and singer Chris Edwards is British Armenian. Orca’s sound reflects this diversity and has been celebrated by radio stations such as KSCR in Los Angeles and Aaron Phillip’s Amazing Radio Rock Show here in the UK. Musically, they have also come from a variety of backgrounds ranging from psychedelic rock and jazz to heavy metal and synth-pop.

The band has evolved from bassist Matt and guitarist Dave’s previous project called Martian Time Slip which focused more on a traditional darker kind of metal. After the break up of Martian Time Slip the two collaborators embarked upon new endeavours, forming Orca and searching for the perfect vocalist for the band. Chris approached the band with a style that was both unique and enigmatic. They were struck by his powerful voice and his ability to enrich the melodies with passion much like the late Jeff Buckley. Ben joined shortly afterwards while continuing to write songs for famous Vlogger Casey Neistat. The newest addition to the group is drummer Kacper who has had success with his symphonic power metal band Pathfinder.

The single ‘Aquarium’ is out on 4th March from the album Universe out April 1st.

Healthy Junkies’ Album ‘Box Of Chaos’ Review

Healthy Junkies’ new album ‘Box Of Chaos’ is an energetic blast of punk perfection. With this record the Londoner rock band has kicked off the year 2016 in style and full of social commentary. Shouting the lines “You’re such a hypocrite, I really hate you” in the dynamic track ‘Hypocrite’ reminds on early Nirvana takes with a rawness that is most endearing and powerfully honest. Another favourite is ‘Rebellion’, a song with Phil doing the lead vocals. Underlined by vocal harmonies and a determined melodic progression the track is a straight up cry for resistance towards oppression from government and whoever else might be in the way of our personal freedom. The feeling of oppression also comes across in a more sentimental way in the last song ‘Captive’. All in all, ‘Box Of Chaos’ is a well rounded piece of work.

Dates:

17th March @ Lady Luck, Canterbury
2nd July Rebellion bar, Manchester

Marcus Nand Releases ‘Time And Tide Wait For No Man’

The great new single by Marcus Nand is ‘Time And Tide Wait For No Man’, a melodic soft pop/rock track which is set to be released on 22ndJanuary. The single is the first release from his album of the same title. Marcus is best-known for his work as a guitarist, and session musician, having played with many well-respected musicians, as well as expertly crossing-over between genres such as rock, pop, flamenco and blues.

‘Time And Tide Wait For No Man’ is structured as a typical pop song but with Marcus’ own unique spin. Straight away the song begins with a full band, with Marcus’ uplifting vocals right at the focal point. The song starts off quite mellow but soon becomes rockier during the chorus. The lyrics tell the story of sell-expression, determination and motivation to achieve what you want in life. With this powerful message and masterful, capturing guitar work, along with a strong backing band, this makes an excellent first single and we’re excited to hear the rest of the album.

Shackleton – The Shackleton Experience Review

‘Shackleton’ is the brainchild of Karl Schmaltz, an eccentric Minnesota native with a passion for 20th Century history in particular the adventures of Arctic explorer Ernest Shackleton.  The album is a rich mix of rock and prog with nods towards the likes of King Crimson and Led Zeppelin. All these influences and styles add to the complexity and richness of the album.

Schmaltz recreates the experience of the men, as the arrangement tells of their perilous passage. The listener is transported to the deck of the ship making its way across the Southern Ocean, hearing sound effects from the stormy seas to the creaking of the ship’s timber. The project has been described as a “metal opera”, but Schmaltz has, effectively, forged a genre of his own, revolutionising the way stories are told and music is heard.

Vidal & Curma On ‘Another Plane’ With New EP

Currently splitting time between their Northern Italian hometown of Padova and the UK’s capital, songwriters Vidal & Curma are a duo making a name for themselves on the London circuit. Playing in some of the most prestigious independent music venues in the city, their reputation has already won them a residency at the revered Proud Camden, where they were invited for repeat showings by popular demand thanks to the innate energy and sense of fun in their songs.

Their music boasts a loose, anarchic freshness without compromising on quality, giving an acoustic twist on the indie likes of The Libertines, The Strokes, Mac Demarco, and Velvet Underground to name a few. But perhaps their closest comparison is less well known – both Vidal and Curma are huge fans of  Django Reinhardt, a gypsy guitarist  from Belgium who was active from the 30s to the 50s. Reinhardt single-handedly invented the gypsy-jazz genre, and both band members consider him the best guitarist of all time.

His brilliance has clearly rubbed off, and the new three track EP ‘Another Plane’ is a real, offbeat, acoustic treat.

See Vidal & Curma in action with this live Tradiio session:

Specialising in writing songs about everyday problems faced by many, song themes vary from the difficulty of maintaining relationships nowadays, where everyone travels and moves a lot (Another Plane), to everyday situations that can lead to deep contemplation (‘Tonight’). The final track, ‘Never Say Again’, is about the unpredictability of meeting someone special in a massive city like London.

With each track boasting different elements which make them special individually, the combination of all three tracks makes for a very consistent release. And it’s all tied together with an acoustic irreverence that really sets them apart from other, more pretentious, peers. It’s an approach that clearly works, with the band already getting the attention of Universal Music Group A&R Manager Fausto Donato. A sign of things to come.

This is the first release on Tradiio Recordings, a new record label set up to release the best performing artists on Tradiio, a music discovery app for iOS, Android and Web.

Tradiio is available here:

Looking For Liam - Take What You Need

Here is the long awaiting video from Looking for Liam on their latest track 'Take What You Need'

Brilliantly self-produced, the track above is a great example of their layered and intricate approach to songwriting, with heavier moments acting as punctuation to the more contemplative sections. It’s hugely impressive work from a band who are still only in their late teens, but show a great deal of maturity in their music.

Go Primitive – 100 Ways EP Review

Go Primitive are a energetic four piece channelling the hard rock thrills in the style of Foo Fighters and Lower Than Atlantis. The 100 Ways EP is a collection of 5 songs inspired by the hardships the band have faced on their path to stardom.  The EP is angry, raw and frankly majestic. With very song erupts in a crescendo of sound and colour, this release is set to make waves.

Go Primitive have supported the likes of The Subways and We Are The Ocean. The influence of their contemporise is evident on the EP. Opening track “Breathe In Bleed Out” is a hard hitting rock anthem, crafted expertly by the band to evoke an emotional response while also having a musical hook. This is juxtaposed with “What You Pay For” a considerably mellower and subdued track but it has a soaring quality to it that is reminiscent of the rest of the tracks on the EP. “In A Band”, “The Sun Will Rise” and “Save Yourself are all relatively similar in style but still manage to capture the true essence of the band. Raw, ferocious guitars, driving bass lines and pounding drums lay the foundations for the powerful vocals which ascend to dizzy heights in every track.

The EP is truly magnificent. It has every core element needed to produce a great hard rock record and Go Primitive has done just that. In the creation of the 100 Ways EP, Go Primitive are on course to rise to the level of the artists they admire so much.

The 100 Ways EP is out on July 13th.

Deadly Circus Fire: ‘The Hydra’s Tailor’ Review

In Darkness We Trust - the opening song on the album, It has sluggish tempo compared to other of the songs on The Hydra’s Tailor. But this song isn’t in shape for their genre they contain but that’s what exclusively sets up the album!

Animal - the subsequently song in the album and is masses more precise to its genre then the earlier song. It truly helps to let the chorus stand out throughout and construct up to it! With a really intense pleasant breakdown towards the end! With a pleasant-sounding chorus but jagged warped vocals.

Where It Lies - Has a really fine profound guitar riff sure to get blood circulating! Approximately ¾ the way throughout this song it turns time-consuming downwards to swiftness again with a chorus! Up in anticipation of the chorus at what time it becomes more pleasant! The vocals are sturdy in this song truly changes rhythm between the coarse screams and being easy on the ear!

Victim – Is the weighty song in the album! It drops into a breakdown towards the end to depart the track on a thunderous note. The first half is overflowing with profound guitar riffs and brawny vocals up until middle through when it becomes easy on the ear almost nerve-jangling!

Devil’s Opera – The riffs are grand in this song! All through the song the vocals are a great deal cleaner contrasted to others on the album in anticipation of about midstream where it starts to turn out to be more profound and up!

Rise Again – The drums being if truth be told on form setting tempo! incredibly burly vocals which set off with the guitar riff truly well in this track! The vocals yet again are comparatively cleaner in this track. They are as fine as devil’s opera!

Martyrs – Interlude

House of Plagues –Truly vigorous rhythm and vocals all through this track! This song also has an in fact good build up until the chorus. Immense chorus line in this song, on top the riff is beguiling!

Aeden - The guitar riff is exceptional additionally the drums being outstanding for making the pace in this track! The song with no trouble is the most intense and common with breakdowns in the album!

The Hydra’s Tailor – With truly hefty vocals and pace switches completed on form this is my most wanted track from the album! The vocals in general express meaning wonderfully! Is the key song commencing the album, the album being the song that the album is named following and you can distinguish precisely why!

Turning The Tide – It has a pleasant riff and a large number of high-quality rhythm changes being completed by the guitar and drums! Has a captivating chorus as well as a grand breakdown part the way down.

Universe - is moreover the longest track in the album essentially making it an extended departure to the listeners! Is mainly the slowest pace song in the album, being fairly pleasant-sounding!

To conclude, Deadly Circus Fire – The Hydra’s Tailor is certainly an album to look out for this June the 16th!  An unbelievable album jam-packed with immense guitar riffs, outstanding pleasant-sounding clean choruses and terrific breakdowns!
