A 2 Blu-ray + 2 CD edition features completely new Dolby Atmos, 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio Surround & Stereo mixes by Steven Wilson taking the music to new levels of clarity & power. “Red” was one of the earliest mixes undertaken by Steven Wilson in 2009 & King Crimson was the first of a number of classic bands & artists to be mixed by Steven so it’s entirely appropriate that he return, some 15 years later, to take the album into the Dolby Atmos era.

Also featured are a complete album’s worth of Elemental Mixes by long-time King Crimson producer (& band manager) David Singleton – using the original multi-track recordings to present a very different audio picture of the album, with greater separation of instruments & utilizing many recorded elements recorded for, but not included in, the original mixes.

As King Crimson biographer Sid Smith puts it in his new notes for the album: “David Singleton’s elemental mixes pull the veil aside on the original sessions and act as a kind of alternative account, a ‘Red’ that could have been, revealing the different passes and takes that the band undertook as well as those Collins, Charig and McDonald as they engaged with the material”.

Multiple new to disc tracks & studio takes – representing all material to survive from the recording sessions have also been mixed &/or mastered for inclusion, making this the most comprehensive overview of the album to be released.

“Red” was recorded immediately after King Crimson’s final US tour of 1974 & the anniversary edition reflects that by including all three Hi-Res Stereo mixes of the live album “USA” in its full concert versions. Also included are a quintet of audio restored bootlegs being issued on disc for the first time, alongside a bootleg of the band’s final US concert in New York in 1974 which Robert Fripp claimed was: “the first gig since the 1969 Crimson where the bottom of my spine registered ‘out of this world’ to the same degree.”

In the decades since its release, “Red” has gone from being an album that was, upon release, under-promoted – as the band had already split up, to being one of the most lauded albums of its era & (after “In The Court of the Crimson King”), King Crimson’s biggest selling album. Writing in The Mojo Collection in 2000, John Bungey assessed “Red” as, “That rarest of records, the sound of a line-up quitting while ahead”.

By the time King Crimson entered the studio in July 74, the band had spent the best part of two years on the road, recorded two albums along the way (“Larks’ Tongues In Aspic” & “Starless & Bible Black”) & shed two band members en route; percussionist Jamie Muir having quit early 1973, and violin/mellotron player David Cross at the end of the US tour just a week prior to the recording of “Red”.

Crimson had built a reputation as one of the tightest, most powerful bands on the rock circuit. Recording as a trio in Olympic studios in London, with one improv piece (Providence) drawn from that final US tour & with contributions from former members & friends on saxophones, violin, and oboe, the group produced the last Crimson studio album of the 70s & one of the decade’s masterpieces – “Red”.

“Red” emerged as a distillation of everything Crimson had been working towards live & in the studio between 72 and 74. In the half century since its release it has built an enviable, enduring reputation among fans & professional musicians alike – with bands from each succeeding decade citing it as an important influence.

Rick Derringer Produced Colour Radio Guitarist Jim Eannelli To Release New Solo Album “Just Deserts”

Album due out in both digital and physical formats September 27, 2024

Producer and multi-instrumentalist Jim Eannelli has been in every sort of band from hard rock to synth pop; he worked with Rick Derringer on the Colour Radio record, played guitar, performed and recorded with both former BoDean Sam Llanas and the Shivvers, the ‘80s power-pop band that finally gained international recognition in recent years. He is a legendary supporting player in his hometown, Milwaukee, and he steps onto center stage for his first album, “Just Deserts.”

Dipping into a trove of original songs written over the years, Eannelli’s “Just Deserts” encapsulates his experiences in life as well as music. The songs are deeply rooted in his years as a member of diverse bands. Just Deserts opens with a ferocious depiction of war’s casualties, “29 Women,” delivered by a rockabilly rhythm with punk attitude and a knife-slashing guitar solo. Eannelli segues easily into “Where I’ve Been,” a ballad of heartbreak and loss. His musical sources are wide, from the sullen blues of “Train from Chicago” to the Beatlesque pop of “Waitin’” and the soaring Americana rock of “Christine.” As a producer, Eannelli reaches for the soul of each song, catching the bright spark of their creation. And as a lyricist, he records the tragedy, confusion and despair of rootless lives, as well as moments of epiphany and spiritual yearning.

Progressive Rock Band Mile Marker Zero to Release Third Full Length Album “Coming of Age” on October 4, 2024

“Coming of Age” is the third full length album from Progressive Rock Band Mile Marker Zero. Following up on their previous album “The Fifth Row”, Mile Marker Zero has shifted from a concept album focused on technology about the exponential growth of AI, to a more human reflection on growing up and the nostalgic experiences of childhood.

“Coming of Age” is eight tracks of new music which is the band’s most mature material to date. To go with the theme of nostalgia, the full album was only released in physical form (CD) on July 6, 2024. The band played a hugely successful album release show and made the album available only via live shows, their website and Bandcamp.

Prog Artist Leon Alvarado Announces New Video For “The Changing Tide”

Acclaimed musician Leon Alvarado is thrilled to announce the upcoming release of the official video for the title track of his critically praised album, “The Changing Tide.” Set to premiere on Friday, September 20th, the video showcases mesmerizing visual sequences created by video artist Nuutti Kataja, marking an exciting collaboration between the two artists.

Reflecting on the new project, Alvarado shares, “In my previous video, we explored some really immersive imagery, where viewers felt as though they were stepping into a surrealistic painting. For this new video, I wanted to push the boundaries even further by blending a more realistic feel within a fantastical setting. Mothers of Invention Keyboard & Synthesizer Legend Don Preston Embarks on First European Solo Tour September 2024

Pianist & Synthesizer legend Don Preston will be touring Europe starting in September (tour dates below). Don Preston leads a life filled with music, innovation, and experimentation in acoustic and electronic music. “Groundbreaking” is a phrase that is clearly overused. With Don it rings true. One of the first performers to drag a pile of oscillators and filters onstage, he brought his classical training to the Avant Garde. In the early 60s Frank Zappa would come to see Don’s “electronic music with films of bacterial life” shows in Los Angeles. Don was soon in Zappa’s radical new group The Mothers Of Invention, touring and playing on classics like “We're Only In It For The Money” and “Roxy & Elsewhere” from 1966 to 1973.

Don has played with everyone from Elvin Jones, Gil Evans, and Nat King Cole to The Residents, Jack Bruce and Robbie Krieger.  His keyboard solos on Zappa albums, as well as countless soundtracks like Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now,” are considered ground-breaking moments in synthesizer music history.

Still very active in his 90’s, Don was there for the dawn of electronic musical performance, and today grafts new technologies into his experimental palette with software synths & iPhone apps, blending jazz, rock, comedy, magic and ambient synths into a captivating performance.

Peppos-Jones Band Review and Interview: Life Notes

I first heard music from Peppos and Jones in 2019. Louis Jones was also in that band. The title was 50/80, 50 Years in 80 Minutes. Additionally, I had a blast interviewing these old high school friends.

The album Life Notes was released a few weeks ago. It opens with a rousing “Don't Waste The Dawn.” Because it was several years back, I did not recall the sound as much as I would have liked, but I know the lead vocals are different. And I don’t mean that in a negative way. It is a great way to kick off the recording. 

“Decisions” is the longest track, clocking in at 6:18 minutes. It starts with a newscast discussing a shake-up in Portland. The tune is well-thought-out, with a saxophone adding unique depth and a guitar wailing away. The male and female vocals are understated, serving the purpose of their message. It's a song about brotherhood and understanding, reminiscent of a '60s protest song. The focus here is to take the advice and make a firm “Decision” to do so.

 

“Music In Heaven” starts with a soft acoustic guitar. I started thinking about how this music reminded me of something. The band America came to mind rather quickly because of the gentle but effective vocal style and rhythmic guitar playing in this track. As always, this was my take on what I heard; everyone can listen to it and be engaged differently. Music triggers things in a listener, whether an emotion is connected to a memory, a person, an event, or anything in life. The female vocals are a nice touch, and the partnership works well.

 

“350 Degrees” begins with excitement and rocking sounds and quickly changes to a more mellow sound, with acoustic and electric guitar still a factor but tastefully. The track is about the circle of life and how quickly it completes that circle, with the hope that goals will be reached.

 

“A.I.” is present-day, which makes no sense to these folks. The guitar is rocking out on this track (Courtesy of Barry Scott). There are many opinions about artificial intelligence, and you hear a powerful take on this subject set to some incredible musicianship. It's a straight-ahead rocker that might not make sense to some due to its content. I like the line, “Man or machine, you just never know.” And that is so true.

 

“This Isn't A Love Song” tells you what they are singing about right up front. Just some random thought I decided to put to ink,” the singer explains. He talks about a lovely woman who moves and sways and how breathtaking it is. Some nice guitar lines populate the track with some honest vocals that are just right to emphasize the lyrics. It’s a real toe-tapper. It's like the smooth sailing sounds of a Jimmy Buffet number.

 

“Back To The Bullet” certainly is a change in direction for track titles! It starts with a strumming acoustic and electric slide, giving it a blues-country feel. It's about a convicted person for murder singing that they are innocent and to be hanged and on the run to get back to his family. He sings, asking, “What is free?” and the sound of a prison cell door closing ends it.

 

“The Musician” had a record collection when he was three years old, and he saw The Beatles on Sullivan. After that night, he and thousands of other kids knew what they wanted to be. The only thing I remember about watching that is getting mad at all the girls screaming because I could not hear them playing! It is a touching song about sweet memories and how music made the singer whole. That combination of rhythmic acoustic guitar and tasteful electric is added to give the song a rich, layered sound. The vocals are soft and thoughtful, as they are on many of these tracks.

 

“Expanding Shadows” starts with an old-fashioned organ playing to give it that Halloween sound and perfect lyrics. The track is much different than all the previous tracks. It's dark but light-hearted, a step away from the other tracks' message. However, that is the point; it sounds like the band is having fun with all the different types of music and scary lyrics. It is my favorite track on the album.

 

“Where Would I Be” returns to a softer approach to people, love, and emotion. The track could be about a significant person—whatever the listener wants to interpret it, as is always the case with any song. The lead guitar and piano playing on this track add a layer of emotion. The lyrics and vocals are heartfelt and moving, resonating with the listener personally.

 

Now it's time to close the recording with the title track, “Life Notes.” After all, this entire album is about a lifetime of memories, events, and the feelings that surrounded that. This one is thoughtful and about the meaning of life, and the message is clear: it's about whatever we hold dear. And that, to me, resonates. The music is well played, and the lyrics are expressive, with that ever-present strumming acoustic, but, this time, an electric slide for some more flavor and emphasis is added.

 

Life Notes is a versatile album that will resonate with music listeners who like to reflect upon their lives and those who could use a little push to do so. The album's soft approach and the moments they decided to cut loose and rock keep the listener engaged. The exemplary musicianship, thoughtful lyrics, and vocals that place enough emphasis on the words when needed make for an absorbing listening experience from start to finish.

Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek, and Gerry Beckley were sons of US Air Force personnel stationed in London, where they began performing live. Their signature song, “A Horse With No Name, in many ways sums up what the band are all about; close vocal harmonies, acoustic guitars, and – if I may misquote Pete Atkin – a journey through “mythical America” and a vaguely rural ethos. “A Horse With No Name was their first international hit, and was taken from their debut album, a self-titled record which came out on Warner Brothers in 1971. Since then, there have been over thirty more records, but the one that I want to talk about today is a very special live album, recorded on stage at one of London’s most iconic venues.

The album was originally recorded in 1979 with sessions taking place for an intended follow up album by Bill’s recently formed group RED NOISE. However, EMI Records, Bill’s then record label, declined to release the recordings and the material remained unreleased. Four recordings appeared as the ‘Do You Dream in Colour’ EP on his Cocteau label in 1980. The following year Bill licensed the original stereo mixes of the album to Mercury Records who issued the album in the Spring of 1981. A ground-breaking record, “Quit Dreaming & Get On the Beam” reached a peak of number seven on the UK charts and is to date Bill’s most commercially successful album.

This limited and expanded edition boxed set features a newly remastered version of the original album mix, but also features an additional 53 tracks drawn from new stereo & 5.1 Surround Sound mixes by Stephen W Tayler of all the surviving recording sessions from 1979, along with a previously unreleased radio session from March 1981, a BBC JOHN PEEL session from June 1981 and a collection of rare single tracks from the era. Also included is the rare promotional film of ‘Do You Dream in Colour?'

The box set has an illustrated 68-page book and an essay and also includes postcards and a poster, making this release the definitive statement on one of Bill Nelson’s great works.

“Skylarking,” XTC’s most commercially successful album was, for many years, also its most mythical with tales of “lost” multi-track tapes (sadly true of other XTC albums but not this one), a song originally dropped from the album only to be replaced when it inadvertently became a hit single in the USA, a perfect match, on paper, between the ideal Britpop band a decade before the term was invented & an Anglophile super-producer that turned rather imperfect in personality terms but still resulted in a classic album.

Still, a masterpiece remains a masterpiece however traumatic its origins & this is one of those few albums that sounded great at the time & sounds just as great, if not better, now.

When Steven Wilson remixed the album in 2016 – for new stereo & 5.1 Surround Sound editions, the release was successful again with both original & a new generation of fans.

Rick responded very positively and came back with his idea of classical sculpture as an inspiration. This he did superbly. I was given the luxury of time to work on his compositions, about 6 months in fact, and I hope I did justice to his creations.                           Pittsfield, MA - September 7, 2024

Last night at the Colonial Theater in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, the atmosphere was electric as a packed house prepared to immerse themselves in memories. Not just their memories but those of the music legend Roger McGuinn. The stage was set with a simple arrangement of guitars, a banjo, and a stool, creating an intimate setting for a night to remember with music and stories from an artist who has made music for over six decades.

 

When I arrived, a lady with CDs was at the merch table. It happened to be Camilla, Roger's wife, a long-time roadie, and collaborator. She was lovely and very knowledgeable about Roger's career and music. Every CD for sale was autographed, so I had to get one, and I always like to support an artist besides writing a review.

 

Roger's stage was set up with his guitars, banjo, and a stool, creating an intimate setting. He shared personal stories about his life and the influential people who shaped it, creating a patchwork quilt of musical history. This personal touch made the evening even more enjoyable, especially for those familiar with his music and career. 

 

For those wondering what to expect, this performance is a unique blend of music (folk, rock, country, blues) and storytelling reminiscent of VH-1 storytellers and MTV Unplugged. It's an experience that will leave you captivated and wanting more.

 

Roger's music history is full and rich with anecdotes and a lifetime that extends to the present day. As someone who appreciates music and history, I found it fascinating. He would play excerpts of all the big hits, like "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is A Season)," and "Mr. Spaceman."

 

What entertained me, and judging by the positive audience reactions, was the deep dive into the birth of songs, where and who they came from, and how they developed. Most are unaware of all the intimate details of a musical career unless there is a biography on the artist to consume.

 

He mentioned the Folk Den Project, a digital archive of folk music that he started in 1995 (he has been uploading one track a month since). This project is a testament to his dedication to preserving and sharing folk music, a literal goldmine including over 300 tracks.

 

Roger McGuinn is a musical treasure; you should experience his show.

When Theo Travis began experimenting with long-form improvised instrumentals for duduk - a woodwind instrument from Armenia sometimes described as ‘the saddest sounding instrument in the world’ - he could hardly have imagined a world in which such a one-hour piece would clock up in excess of a million plays on YouTube. Yet that is precisely what happened, with the multi-functional music finding fans purely in its own terms as well as for an array of uses from meditation to yoga, to relaxation and more. Something about the sound, the performances, the context, found, built and maintained a much wider audience than most, far more mainstream music. All of this was achieved without hype, marketing or a dedicated record label supporting the release.

Extending the idea, earlier this year Theo worked with producer Steven Wilson, (who has previously mixed and mastered many of Theo’s solo recordings and in whose band Theo has played) to produce a new duduk improvisation in multi-channel audio as well as stereo, with soundscapes assembled by Steven Wilson from Theo’s alto flute playing. The result is a stunning and utterly unique piece of work which helps to define new possibilities for so-called “immersive audio”, without losing focus on the pure sound and inherent musicality of the duduk improvisations which have struck such a chord with a wide and growing audience online.

DELUXE HARDBACK BOOK EDITION OF PORCUPINE TREE'S ICONIC 2007 ALBUM FEAR OF A BLANK PLANET ANNOUNCED

SET FOR RELEASE ON 25th OCTOBER 2024 ON THE TRANSMISSION LABEL

London label Transmission have announced a new edition of Porcupine Tree’s Grammy-nominated 2007 album Fear Of A Blank Planet. With a 112-page hardback book, five CDs, and a Blu-ray disc, the new edition includes remasters of Fear Of A Blank Planet and the Nil Recurring mini album, approximately 55 minutes of previously unreleased demos, an early live performance of a still work-in-progress version of the album, as well as BBC and instore session recordings - the most complete collection of the album and related material to date.

The set consists of:

112-Page Hardback Book: The centrepiece of this collection is a 112-page book, with an in-depth examination of the process of creating the album by Stephen Humphries with interviews, alongside rare photographs from photographers Lasse Hoile & Carl Glover.

Disc 1 (CD): 2024 remaster of Fear Of A Blank Planet.

Disc 2 (CD): 2024 remaster of Nil Recurring EP.

Disc 3 (CD): Approx 55 minutes of previously unreleased demos by both band and Steven Wilson, offering a rare insight into the creative process for the album, including 2 tracks not recorded for the final album.

Disc 4 (CD): A live recording of a work-in-progress version of the album made at The Garage, Saarbrucken on 23rd September 2006, while the band were still refining and developing the material.  This has been mixed from the multitrack tapes for the first time for this edition.

Disc 5 (CD): A 5 track BBC radio session (Maida Vale Studios, 13th April 2007) plus an 8-song acoustic / unplugged in-store performance from Park Avenue, Orlando (4th October 2007).

Disc 6 (Blu-ray): Includes remastered stereo and 5.1 surround sound mixes of Fear Of A Blank Planet and Nil Recurring, as well as a new 2024 documentary - 'The Making of Fear Of A Blank Planet'. Also features 3 music videos, 3 songs performed live on film at The Palladium, Koln (4th December 2007) and 2 live visual films (‘Sleep Together’ and ‘Anesthetize’).

Originally released in 2007, Fear Of A Blank Planet is Porcupine Tree's ninth studio album and both band and fans alike consider it to be a high point in their catalogue. Their biggest selling album at the time, it was the band’s first album to break into the Billboard Top 100 in the USA as well as charting significantly across Europe, earning them a Grammy nomination in the process. The album includes guest appearances from Robert Fripp (King Crimson) & Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson and featured in Rolling Stone Magazine’s Greatest Prog Albums Of All Time as well as being named Classic Rock’s Album of the Year in 2007.

A concept album inspired by the Bret Easton Ellis novel Lunar Park, Fear Of A Blank Planet’s lyrics address how the adolescent protagonist battles his terminal boredom and attention-deficit disorders with a regimen of prescription drugs, TV, computer gaming, mindless violence, empty sex, and self-harm.

Following the release of Fear Of A Blank Planet in 2007, Porcupine Tree solidified their reputation as one of the rock’s most celebrated bands with their 2009 release The Incident garnering critical acclaim and earning the band another Grammy nomination. After a significant hiatus while members moved on to other projects, 2022’s highly anticipated return with Closure/Continuation demonstrated the band's unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of their sound.

There’s a palpable sense of energy and enthusiasm from the audience captured on the tapes at this concert as King Crimson (sharing a European tour with then label band mates Roxy Music) take to the stage in Fréjus, France, in late Summer, 1982. With two albums’ worth of material to draw upon (Discipline, Oct 1981 & Beat, June 1982) & extensive touring that had already seen the band play concerts in the UK, Europe, USA & Japan, the live shows - as often with King Crimson – had a dynamism & punch that simply couldn’t be replicated in a recording studio. Add a pair of classic KC instrumentals, (Red & Larks’ Tongues in Aspic Part Two), to that mix & all the ingredients were there for a very special performance.

Recorded initially for a video release, the audio from the concert has, inexplicably, never been issued as a standalone release. Nor has a live album from the 1980s line-up previously appeared on vinyl. “Sheltering Skies” presents the complete King Crimson performance across 2LPs pressed on 200-gram vinyl or a single CD, both completed with the addition of the recording of ‘The Sheltering Sky’ from the previous night’s concert at Cap d’Agde. The 1980s King Crimson was, in terms of concert performances/album releases, still less than a year old when this album was recorded. The collective decades of experience of the individual musicians is funneled through the enthusiasm & freshness of the line-up & the newness of the material to produce a special concert recording.

While King Crimson material from this period is always in demand, with the forthcoming US tour by Beat (King Crimson’s Adrian Belew & Tony Levin, joined by guitarist Steve Vai & Tool drummer Danny Carey), performing the material from that period, there is increased interest in hearing this material as it was originally performed.
