Punk Legends The Furys Return With New Singles Compilation "New Wave Hit Parade"

The Furys are one of Southern California’s first New Wave/Punk/Powerpop bands! The group’s first single was released in 1977 (“Hey Ma” b/w “Jim Stark Dark”), and 1978’s “Say Goodbye to the Black Sheep” was an international success, garnering extensive airplay, press, and live performances. According to founding member and lead vocalist Jeff Wolfe, “The Furys formed in 1977 as a reaction to the dreadful noise that was on the radio at that time.” 1979 saw the release of the “Moving Target” / “We Talk We Dance” single which elicited substantial critical response.

The Furys released a five-song mini album entitled “Indoor/Outdoor” in 1987. Recorded at EMI/America studio in Hollywood, “Indoor/Outdoor” had an excellent sales run, huge radio response and heavy press coverage.

The band’s new singles (“New Wave Girl” and “Action Reaction”) were released the second week of September 2021. These songs are the first new material issued by the band since 2015’s “The Sound of the Furys” CD.

Now the band is back with a new singles collection titled “New Wave Hit Parade” which encompasses all three of the group’s vinyl singles from 1977-1979 as well as The Furys 1987 mini-album “Indoor/Outdoor”. Also included is The Furys 2016 digital single “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore”. This is the first ever digital release of the vinyl records.

Says Jeff Wolfe, “After numerous multi-generational requests, The Furys have been reformed to continue their campaign for world domination.” The musical direction of The Furys was, is, and always will be melodic poetry blended with powerful music.

In conjunction with “New Wave Hit Parade” and upcoming releases of new material, The Furys will be performing live in Autumn 2023. Long standing members, Jeff Wolfe and Dave Lewty will be joined by guitarists Cliff Roman (The Weirdos), Jeff Jourard (The Motels) and Ray Herron (The Sloths) on drums.

Punk Legends The Furys Return With New Album “The Furys Again”

Punk legends The Furys are back with a new album “The Furys Again” which will be released in all formats on October 8, 2021.

In conjunction with the release of “The Furys Again” album, a reissue program will occur concurrently containing all three singles as mentioned above plus the “Indoor/Outdoor” mini album. These reissues will be the first time these pivotal tracks have been issued digitally.

Says Jeff Wolfe, “After numerous multi-generational requests, The Furys have been reformed to continue their campaign for world domination.”

The musical direction of The Furys was, is, and always will be melodic poetry blended with powerful music. The group’s latest release “The Furys Again” proves, yet again, that this philosophy holds true. Founding member and lead singer Jeff Wolfe provides the poetry. Long standing Furys member and multi-instrumentalist Dave Lewty provides the music.

This new album was recorded wholly in Lewty’s home studio with songs written by the duo. Wolfe and Lewty have enough compositions for three more Furys albums plus dozens more in various genres, including some not yet defined.

The songs themselves reflect culture, art, literature and, indeed, life in the 21st century. “Miss Havisham Regrets” is based upon the Dickensian character from “Great Expectations”. “Please Mister Kafka” is homage to the brilliant surrealist author Franz Kafka. “Afraid” is a powerful look at the BLM movement and the causes for its existence. Others (“I Gotta Grow Up”, “Glitter Bomb”, “Worthy”) are reflections on life in an advanced age. Some (“Anna, Come Home”, “New Wave Girl”) are simply catchy rock/pop songs about great women.

The Furys are entering their fifth decade of performing and recording; their latest album, “The Furys Again” keeps the original tradition alive whilst acknowledging contemporary influences.

Scottish Punk Icons SKIDS Celebrate The Release Of Their New Album, Share Acoustic Performance Video Of “Rock On!”

Los Angeles, CA - The wait is finally over, friends! Veteran punk rock outfit Skids have just released their brand new studio album, a collection of electrifying cover tunes that pays tribute to the band’s hometown venue, the historic Kinema Ballroom in Dunfermline, Scotland. Songs From A Haunted Ballroom offers unique and superbly arranged new versions of tracks by some of the groups that inspired Skids, bands such as The Clash, The Adverts, Ultravox, Sex Pistols, and Magazine. They even turn in a couple supercharged versions of their own early hits “Into The Valley” and “The Saints Are Coming!”

To celebrate the album’s release, the band shares a special acoustic performance video of David Essex classic “Rock On” that originally aired on the band’s April 24 live stream concert. Sure, Essex’s original version is better known for its laid back, too-cool-for-school vibe, but in the hands of vocalist Richard Jobson and guitarist Bruce Watson along with his son Jamie Watson, the song becomes a snarling, percussive anthem that showcases the decades’ worth of rock experience that has honed and shaped this band.

Songs From A Haunted Ballroom is now available on both CD in a deluxe 6-panel digipak and in a gatefold jacket with colored vinyl as well as on digital platforms everywhere!

Scottish Punk Icons SKIDS Announce Their First Ever Covers Album, Release New Version Of ULTRAVOX’s “Young Savage!”

Los Angeles, CA - Veteran punk rock outfit Skids have returned with a powerful new studio album that pays tribute to the band’s hometown venue, the historic Kinema Ballroom in Dunfermline, Scotland. Both a live venue as well as a traditional dance club, the Kinema became a musical and cultural epicenter for the youth in Scotland’s Fife province especially during the late ‘70s, early ‘80s punk rock movement. It would also become the home venue for Skids who played numerous shows at the Kinema as both a support act for such legendary bands as The Clash as well as the headliners for multiple sold-out events.

Now, Skids take a walk down memory lane, performing songs by the bands who influenced them in those early years. Songs From A Haunted Ballroom includes unique and superbly arranged new versions of tracks by The Clash, The Adverts, Ultravox, Sex Pistols, and Magazine PLUS new versions of their own early hits “Into The Valley” and “The Saints Are Coming!”

Today the band unveils the first single from the album, a supercharged version of Ultravox’s “Young Savage.” Skids vocalist Richard Jobson shares the unexpected influence that the stylish, distinctively British new wave band Ultravox had on Skids, saying “John Foxx of Ultravox was cool, handsome and wrote poetry rather than lyrics. He made it ok for the rest of us to be a bit arty. ‘Young Savage’ was a massive hit in the Kinema.”

Stream the single: https://orcd.co/skids_young_savage

“I’ve loved working on this album,” Jobson continues, “It reminded me of those early cathartic days, and of course where I came from. The place that made me what I am. I would like to dedicate the album to all of the Punks and Ghosts from the day of The Kinema who like me had their life transformed through a love of music.”

Songs From A Haunted Ballroom will be available on both CD in a deluxe 6-panel digipak and colored vinyl in a gatefold jacket as well as on digital platforms everywhere starting June 4!

Rock Review: James Williamson and Deniz Tek-Two to One

Release Date: September 18, 2020

Label: 2020 Cleopatra Records

Website

James Williamson and Deniz Tek find themselves in a fully-loaded, revved up new music venture, Two to One. The Stooges’ guitarist James Williamson and Radio Birdman’s Deniz Tek team up once again from 2017 and Tek’s 2011 special guest appearance from Iggy Pop and The Stooges’, to unveil a new progressive-rock, garage-punk blend album that is sure-fire to get you rocking out in your garage like the olden days, or on the next neighborhood block party. Coming September 18, Williamson and Tek team up to bring you an album that takes the seriousness out of your everyday life, even if it is just for a moment.

The album explodes onto the scene with “Jet Pack Nightmare.” With its ZZ Top sound-a-like guitar riffs, the song is a great starter. If you listen close enough, it sounds like a timed race of revenge on someone before the person seeking the retribution wakes up. “Progress” sings of being forever in the moment. Where we are recognizing our faults of personal history, we also acknowledge that “tomorrow never comes,” meaning, time is just a construct to some and we will rectify our issues when we feel it necessary or imperative.

“Take a Look Around” is a slower touch of ‘90s ska/alternative music, with a representation of calling out modern-day civilization. It says to observe what is right in front of us, admiring the completely wrong ideals and lifestyles, rather than maybe focusing on our self-improvement and growth. “Good as Gone,” writes itself in its lyrics. A man who has reached his point in tolerating the other party in question. He sings as though this person has pushed him to where nothing can justify him trying to mend the relationship.

“Stable,” is the lead single off of Two to One. The lead singer claims to be in a sort of freefall where nothing anyone does can save him. From when others around him first met him, his character or personality is slowly cracking with imperfections. He feels as though no matter what someone tries to do to help him, it will be nothing but failed attempts. “Climate Change” is a bit of a random tune. While it certainly does call attention to the modern-day debate of ‘climate change’ it seems to be a play-on mockery of the topic. Some of the hypocrisy, and an old vs. young them, provides comedic relief that is subtle but funny.

“Birthday Present” starts with a smooth guitar lick, and the title lends the listener to think it will be something positive and uplifting until the singer begins singing. The song is based in a darker-than-expected tone and a very scattered concept of a celebration, more like the ending of one messy party. “Small Change” begins as a bit of an Americana-rock styled song. For a sudden shift, “Small Change” hints at glimmers of positivity and subtlety peaks at how emotion can increase the effects of the changes in life. A “big heart,” to this singer is key to morphing your life to the way you desire it to be.

“Liar” calls out the singer’s significant other straight to her face. He proclaims what a lot of us feel when we’ve hit the end of the road with someone. “Except the diamond in your ear, nothing last forever” is possibly the boldest claim to how far tolerance can take a person. This woman cannot see right in front of her the actions that led up to the separation about to occur. “No Dreams” is a spiral. The singer is lost within himself, trying to find something to connect to on a physical level of which, unfortunately, failure strikes him at every turn. The song is a fantastic way to represent how our psyche can easily be manipulated and played with. Ending out the album, “Melissa Blue” is of a seductive lady who has an aura of mystery about her, only to end in heartbreak. The song tells of a whole tale of meeting up, a small dose of adventure, and inevitable heartbreak as the two, part ways.

Key tracks include: “Good as Gone,” “Stable,” and “Melissa Blue.”

"The Fall: Box of Ten #2" with Free Bonus Disc "Cork 21st July 2012" Now Available For Pre-order

The Fall were an English post-punk band, formed in 1976 in Prestwich, Greater Manchester. They underwent many line-up changes, with vocalist and founder Mark E. Smith as the only constant member.

First associated with the late 1970s punk movement, the Fall’s music has always pushed & challenged boundaries, with Mark. E. Smith at the helm on and off stage, the band has always been characterised by an abrasive, repetitive guitar-driven sound and tense bass and drum rhythms, along with Smith’s caustic lyrics, described by critic Simon Reynolds as “a kind of Northern English magic realism that mixed industrial grime with the unearthly and uncanny, voiced through a unique, one-note delivery somewhere between amphetamine-spiked rant and alcohol-addled yarn.”

The Fall have been called “the most prolific band of the British post-punk movement.” From 1979 to 2017, they released thirty-two studio albums. They were long associated with BBC disc jockey John Peel, who championed them from early on in their career and described them as his favourite band, famously explaining, “they are always different; they are always the same.” Earlier this year, Smith died at the age of 60, effectively putting an end to the group.

No other band in the world can touch The Fall’s magnificence and sheer volume, which are captured here in 'Box of Ten #2'. Issued on Cog Sinister, The Fall’s official label, and following on from the “Set of Ten”

This is a limited-edition set (only 500 units) of 11 discs of previously unreleased live recordings, spanning three decades. The earliest recording taken from 1984 and the most recent 2014.

Riding on the punk crest of the new wave movement, Roger C. Reale & Rue Morgue released Radioactive, A 12-track blitzkrieg providing enough octane to power a stock car. After shaking up the lineup (G.E. Smith of SNL fame replaced by Mick Ronson of David Bowie fame), the band began recording their second album, Reptiles in Motion. Conflicts between the record company, the studio and the producer put the sessions to rest. Some 40 years later, the recordings are finally seeing the light of day. Combined with Radioactive, this collection provides the ultimate Roger C. Reale & Rue Morgue experience.

The sound borrows from the Ramones and Johnny Thunders, yet adds enough texture and pop affectations to make it more accessible to the masses. Think power punk mixed with power pop. If Radioactive is a blitzkrieg, then Reptiles in Motion is a more deliberate and sustained attack. Make no mistake, Roger C. Reale & Rue Morgue make the most of each song in this collection. There is little time wasted on prolonged notes, extended verses or spaces between stanzas — the 24 tracks average a modest 3:07 in duration. The blistering guitar and angst-ridden lyrics impose their will with skill and brevity, forcing the listener to react.

It's hard to believe that songs like "Stop & Go" and "Please Believe Me" from Radioactive never hit the mainstream in 1979. We'll leave this mystery up to the documentary makers, but one could easily see these performances blending in between Graham Parker and Cheap Trick on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert or becoming vanguard new wave music videos. The same could be said for songs like "Radioactive" and "No Secrets" on the follow-up, Reptiles in Motion which would have/should have been released in 1980.

All in all, The Collection does not disappoint, and despite 40 years between Radioactive and Reptiles in Motion, the power still surges, leaving the listener revived and energized.

Key Tracks Include: “Stop & Go”, “Please Believe Me”, “Kill Me”, “Radioactive”, “No Secrets”, “Rock it to the Kremlin”.

The Neville Staple Band Release New Single "Put Away Your Knives"

Check out this amazing song, “Put Away Your Knives”, by the Neville Staple Band, with its 2Tone influenced punky ska and reggae mix, along with the on-point lyrics that focus on the current knife crime problem sweeping the Nation!

The Legendary Neville Staple (ex The Specials, Fun Boy Three, Special Beat, Judge Roughneck and more) and wife, Sugary Staple (who recently co-wrote the highly acclaimed ‘Rude Rebel’s Album with Neville), both collaborated with Dandy Livingstone, another legendary ska figure and originator of Rudy, A Message To You, to produce this lyrical and musical cry to the young people involved in knife crime. This follows the fatal stabbing, just 6 months ago, of Neville’s 21-year-old grandson Fidel Glasgow. The killer has still not been caught.

Neville has said, “We are dedicating the song to my grandson Fidel and to everyone else out there, who has been affected by violent crimes. It’s time we take back some control and teach the youth right from wrong, and the consequences of their actions. This song is highlighting the pain and the anger being caused to the families too. It asks the youths to just stop, think and put down the knives! Even while we were in the studio recording this, my wife Sugary and I became very emotional. It hurts bad when you lose someone so young in the family, but it’s even harder when you know that someone took their life early. No one said we were all ready to have Fidel taken away from us. I shed a tear on stage every time we make a dedication to him and to my daughter Melanie, so Sugary takes over and speaks out for me to the crowd. Then I get angry at just how easily the youth find it now, to carry weapons around. They seem to have no thoughts for who they are really hurting, including themselves. It is us, all the generations above them that must step in now and help fix this mess. This disregard for life! No one else is going to sort it out!”

“We had some violent crime when I was a young guy, but not like this. And we feared consequence. We messed about a bit then you grow up and make some better purpose for yourself.”

Sugary said, “We talk to young offenders and go to some schools and chat about the seriousness of violent crimes and talk about ways of staying away from it. Some were even young parents themselves! I asked if they would want their child to know that they cut someone or even killed someone. What kind of a role model is that! I have said over and over again, if you don’t feel safe going to that place without carrying a weapon, then don’t go to that place. Just don’t go! It can’t be a good place to hang out anyway, if weapons are needed. And if you feel pressured into carrying a knife or any other sh**, talk to somebody you trust. If this is not your parents, then maybe a cool cousin, a great uncle or auntie, a grandparent or even a friend. This includes those who are groomed into that life. I also call upon all the ‘good’ young people out there, to join forces in saying #PutAwayYourKnives to other friends who are carrying. Why not make it a cool thing to share that message and separate yourselves from the negatives.”

“I say it is all our responsibility. Everyone please look out for each other. Look out for the young people around you. Check them. See if they need guidance or support in going the right way. My stepdaughter Melanie has lost her only son. Her life as a mother has been destroyed. Many others have been through similar pain. Step up people, this is all our problem. Don’t wait for it to hit your family”

Neville and Sugary decided to also use the song to support the great work of Victim Support, to promote their services and encourage more support and donations, for what Victim Support do for families affected by knife crime. Diana Fawcett, Chief Officer of independent charity Victim Support said:

“Working closely with victims and bereaved families we know just how destructive these shocking crimes are for everyone impacted. We’re really pleased to be working with the renowned Neville Staple and his wife Sugary Staple to help raise awareness of the issue and raise vital funds to allow us, as an independent charity, to continue our work.

“Families and communities are being devastated by knife crime and it is so important that we all come together to tackle this - organisations, government agencies and all communities.”

The Romantics:
While it's true that the Romantics took much of their simple thunder from the British Invasion, their primary influence was the Frenzied excitement of the late 60's Detroit rock scene. They cut their teeth on that High Energy sound characterized by the MC5, the Psychedelic Stooges, Bob Seger and the Last Heard, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, Scott Morgan's Rationals, SRC, and Garage icons the Underdogs, infusing it with sincerity, irony, spontaneity, and of course, Volume. The Romantics took the essence of this scene and translated it to suit their own modern experience. They favored short brash songs, “punk short” hair and popularized red leather suits.

After releasing their own independent single in 1977, consisting of the first two songs they had written - “Little White Lies” and “I Can't Tell You Anything” - The Romantics traveled east to establish an audience. Soon after Bomp Records' Greg Shaw sees them in Toronto and funds a single, which included “Tell It To Carrie,” “First In Line,” something of a stylistic matrix for The Romantics' music to come. The Romantics considered themselves well removed from the Sex Pistols' negativity. They didn't want Rock & Roll to go away rather they want, as Skill tells a reporter in 1979: “to still have fun with three chords.” The late 70's U.K. punk movement was then diluted and still misunderstood in America.

Through constant touring over three years and meetings with CBS Brass, Natt Weiss, & Nemperor A&R reps, they signed with Nemperor Records in 1979.

The 80's:
The original Romantics, Palmar, Skill, Cole and Marinos released their debut LP. Anchored by “What I Like About You,” “When I Look In Your Eyes” and a cover of The Kinks, Ray Davies' “She's Got Everything.” The album is an exemplary pop-rock period piece. The Romantics evoke a youthful portrait, haunting in its innocence, a direct contrast to the tough world they know in Detroit. Now nearly 30 plus years later they are still known for having created some of the most influential and beloved rock and roll of all time.

The 2nd record, “National Breakout” in late 1980, featuring standouts “Night Like This” and “Forever Yours” produced tours of Europe and Australia. The 3rd record “Strictly Personal” was released in1981. In 1983-84 they raised the bar with “In Heat” the platinum album bearing 2 top 10 singles, “Talking In Your Sleep” and “One In A Million” followed with a tour of Japan.

In late 1990, the Romantics added current Blondie drummer Clem Burke to the lineup, and in 1994 they released a 5 song EP titled “Made In Detroit” for Westbound Records, containing fellow Detroiter George Clintons' Funkadelic songs, “You & Your Folks.” And “I Wanna Know,” along with three originals. Later that year, The Romantics received an award for Outstanding Pop/Rock Recording Artists from the Motor City Music Awards in 1992.

1995 saw The Romantics settle their 7 year old lawsuit against their former management. The Romantics were presented with the Distinguished Achievement Award at the Detroit Music Awards in 1999. “61/49” was released in the fall of 2003 and named for the storied crossroads near Clarksdale, Mississippi where bluesman Robert Johnson made his pact with the devil. “61/49” is intended as a tip of the hat to the roots of rock 'n' roll and forms the nucleus of The Romantics' fervent pop.

21st Century Romantics:
Due to touring commitments with Blondie, Clem Burke recommended the addition of Brad Elvis. Regaled by both critics and fellow drummers for his precision beat-keeping and showmanship, Elvis is best known as a member of the Elvis Brothers, Screams and The Handcuffs. In addition to being a staple on classic and contemporary rock radio, television commercials and movies; Sirius/XM Satellite radio has also embraced The Romantics. Their songs can be heard on a number of stations including Little Steven’s Underground Garage.

2011 brought the re-emergence of original bass player, vocalist, Rich Cole and Mike Skill back on guitar. The band is now able to expand their set list and include more songs from their first two albums, and include new and unreleased material. This now allows them to focus on more harmonies and get back to their original rock sound that established The Romantics from the very beginning.

Once again much to the excitement of their fans worldwide, The Romantics Palmar, Skill, Elvis, and Cole are touring the US and Europe in support of their recently released singles from their highly anticipated new album release “Up From The Rubble” for summer 2016!

Psychedelic Post-Punk Band Bulgogi Release Third Album “Juan Dissed The Cyclops Baby”

Asheville, NC - Psychedelic Post-Punk band Bulgogi have finally released their highly anticipated third album “Juan Dissed The Cyclops Baby”! The band's music has been described as a “twitchy, dancey, textural adventure through nightscapes, static dreams and startlingly sweet melodies.” Howling with operatic falsettos, pounding with sad giant drums and textured with incorporeal, corpse-lit guitars, “Juan Dissed The Cyclops Baby” is a soggy, serene sermon of schadenfreude for the mad children of today. The message: be free, be crazy, espouse chaos. Eat man flesh.

Bulgogi, Korean for “fire meat,” is a type of marinated beef, a dish of some repute. The quartet seems to channel its power from the concept of this flaming meat. Says frontman Tim Tsurutani, “Life is foggy and misty as hell. Sometimes things are beautiful. Sometimes things are the opposite of that. Mostly, things are boring or just confusing. Fortunately, some people have incredible visions of reality that transcend the mundane stuff. 'Juan Dissed The Cyclops Baby' pays homage to that-not knowing what the hell is going on and being enraged by what we see happening but at the same time maybe having a fool's faith that there's something bigger out there? Something cosmic we hope? Cthulhu?”

It all started with one dude in a damp basement in West Asheville, NC. Bedroom recordings of endless guitar tracks spilled over dance beats made up the bones, muscle and fat of Bulgogi's first release, “Give Up Your Guts”, a series of eerie but pretty dance punk tunes. After 2014's sophomore release, “Bibimbap”, Bulgogi became a four piece and set out to record a rock opera. Many sweaty and feverish shows later, chronic ADHD had reduced the rock opera to perhaps a 4 song EP instead.

With the help of a young local producer, the lads finally managed to piece together “Juan Dissed The Cyclops Baby”, a gleeful and manic amalgam of prog rock, psychedelic, post punk and a certain je ne sais quois.

Says bassist Galen, “Writing the songs together was very exciting because we had only just become a four piece and were still learning who we all were. At first we wanted to call the album 'Jaundiced Cyclops Baby' and people were like, 'why? That name is terrible.' To us, it kind of represented like a gestational period. We were all experiencing weird post adulthood growing pains. Pressure to be successful and not really getting there was haunting us. We wanted a lot of people to hear our music, but it was hard because we were poor and had to work day jobs. It took us awhile to be able to prioritize what we were doing and somehow that title seemed appropriate. Then we realized it actually sucked and changed it to 'Juan Dissed The Cyclops Baby' which is borderline nonsense. Ah well.”

Bulgogi is:
GALEN plays bass. He might be a college graduate.
RYAN plays guitar like it is a modular synthesizer and is generally a confused person.
HUGH plays drums. His real name is probably Hubert. His hair is red.
TIM sings and plays guitar. He is the sexiest member. It is not close.

Here's what the press has said about Bulgogi:

“A twitchy, dancey, textural adventure through nightscapes, static dreams and startlingly sweet melodies.Tsurutani's lyrics may be tongue-in-cheek at points, but his acrobatic vocal abilities are no joke.” - Alli Marshall, Mountain Xpress

“A wonderfully hook-filled sound that's at once intense and hauntingly melodic.” - Peter Hay, Twinvision

“The Asheville psychedelic dance punks brought a ton of weirdness to the table on their January release, BIBIMBAP. We’re glad they did, because Weird Kids Don't Love might be our favorite song from the tarheel state this year.” - Future Chord

In support of the new album, the band plans to produce a music video featuring bizarre monsters terrorizing a man driving a modest sedan. “We seem to have a guilty pleasure for launching assaults on the everyday humdrum of modern life,” says singer Tsurutani. “Also we have a friend who is amazing at costume design, so why not?”

In closing Bulgogi has this to impart, “Don’t be afraid. Don’t let fear and selfishness breed oppression. No one is free until everyone is free.”

When Punk Meets Prog Metal – The Last Ditches Feat. The Heartbreakers Walter Lure & Black Sabbath/Rainbow's Bobby Rondinelli

NYC - Could there be two more disparate musical genres than Punk and Prog Metal? And… Could those oil and water categories ever mix? The answer… The Last Ditches…A respected Prog Metal rhythm section meets 'Real Deal' CBGB/Max's Kansas City guitars and singing.

The Last Ditches sprang into being thanks to the animal cunning and persistence of Funk Metal bassist extraordinaire and studio owner, Randy Pratt. See, Randy had a deep conviction that he, along with actual no-kidding punk legend, New York's Heartbreakers' Walter Lure, The Planets' long time guitarist, Binky Philips, and another genuine music icon, Rainbow and Black Sabbath's Master Prog Metal drummer, Bobby Rondinelli, would make an amazing sound together; a blending of two rock styles that usually want nothing to do with each other…It took over four years to prove his point, but, Randy was oh, so right.

For those who need a remedial, Walter Lure was “the other guitarist” in Johnny Thunders' Heartbreakers, rightly considered one of the Top Five All Time Great Punk bands. While the toxically charismatic Johnny took up most of the spotlight, Walter's guitar playing made up the bulk of the band's incredible music, as did Walter's songwriting. To wrap Walter's justified legend up in one neat sentence… “Walter Lure also played un-credited guitar on four albums by The Ramones”.

Ask any serious drummer playing arena-recording level drums and they will all not only know who Bobby Rondinelli is, chances are, they own some of his world famous instructional DVDs. World Famous is not glib here. Mr. Rondinelli travels the globe giving sold out drumming seminars in Tokyo, London, Scandinavia, Moscow… In addition to Bobby being a member of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow for their albums “Difficult to Cure” (1981), “Straight Between the Eyes” (1982) and “Finyl Vinyl” (1986), Bobby recorded and toured with Black Sabbath on and for the “Cross Purposes” album and two albums and one DVD with Blue Oyster Cult, easily three of the all time most influential Metal bands. Mr. Rondinelli's other recordings number in the literal hundreds.

Binky and Randy are decades-long veterans of the New York City Music Scene. Randy played with the likes of The Funky Knights and is currently the harpist in the reconstituted Cactus, yes, that Cactus, and the internationally acclaimed funk-metal band, The Lizards. Meanwhile, Binky, who, back in the day, shared NYC stages with The New York Dolls, KISS, The Ramones, Blondie, et al, has stuck to his Planets guns all this time while writing a weekly column for Huffington Post. Tommy Ramone even called Binky “a virtuoso”.

Every aspect of The Last Ditches' music (Walter Lure came up with the name), are extraordinarily successful examples of kitsch painter, Bob Ross's Happy Accident approach to art. All thirteen songs on “Spilt Milk” were learned on the spot in the studio and recorded the moment “the ducks lined up”. Adding to the immediacy of the basic tracks, in every case, all the many guitar overdubs were cut with nothing worked out in advance, ever. What Walter and Binky achieved was almost entirely by instinct, attitude, and a strong musical empathy. This is music for Guitar Freaks. Bobby and Randy laid down over-the-top granite-hard fist-tight foundations for Walter and Binky's careening guitars and voices. The band's dear pal, Paul Gifford, added gorgeous harmony vocals.

Eight of the thirteen songs recorded were written by Walter and Binky and Randy, expressly for the “Spilt Milk” album. The remaining five cuts are from untapped back catalog.

It is The Last Ditches' great good fortune (and yours) that this project was headed up by the dazzling Master Engineer, JZ Barrell (who shares Producer credit with Binky) behind the recording console. The band's magic might have been accidental, JZ's was emphatically not. The truth is, everything took so damn long and at times seemed to be happening in a vacuum, that The Last Ditches themselves had no idea they had recorded such an utterly visceral and exciting rock and roll album until JZ finished it.

Okay, it's time for you (and your neighbors) to enjoy this music.

The Last Ditches “Spilt Milk” will be released on Hyperspace / Rocker Records: https://www.facebook.com/Hyperspace-Records-158124194256116/
