7D Media Presents Solace, a New Ambient Jazz Album by Jonathan Crossley, David Kollar and Lukas Ligeti

Watch the video for ’They Are Coming’: https://youtu.be/6xCPODJPi3A

Release date: September 11, 2026 | Cat# 7D2602

Genre: Ambient Jazz

Secondary genres: Electroacoustic improvisation, Experimental jazz, Fourth World / post-Fourth World

Santa Fe, NM — 7D Media is proud to announce Solace, a dynamic new set of wholly improvised works from Jonathan Crossley, David Kollar and Lukas Ligeti. Recorded in June 2024 during an artistic residency at the University of Liverpool, the project captures three singular musical minds in deep, real-time dialogue.

On this recording, the digitally enabled guitar practices of Crossley and Kollar intersect with the polymetric, Africa-inflected drumming of Ligeti, generating environments that move between ambient, pulsating and rhythmically intricate states. Crossley's playing fuses guitar, synthesis and real-time digital control into an expanded, gestural improvisational language, while Kollar treats the guitar as a vehicle for expansive, genre-defying expression, ranging from tonal abstraction to avant-garde interplay. Ligeti's drumming draws on experimental, jazz, contemporary and world traditions, weaving overlapping polyrhythms and cross-cultural influences into a percussive approach that is both grounded and exploratory.

On the title track, Solace, the trio are joined by Arve Henriksen, whose haunting trumpet work paints a picture of melancholy and openness within this improvised setting, adding an expansive, textural dimension that underscores the album's emotional and sonic breadth.

The tracks Solace and They Are Coming are already available for purchase/streaming.

Next In Line is a "best of Bob Holz" compilation of ten remastered tracks selected from Bob's eight previously released albums on MVD Audio.

Throughout Next In Line, Bob Holz's drumming reaffirms his reputation as one of jazz fusion's most talented drummers. The drumming on this album is nothing short of world class. Holz is known for his use of dynamics combined with amazing chops, sense of time, finesse, groove and taste. He is a profoundly musical drummer who also happens to enjoy composing music. The tune “Flat Out” is one of Bob's compositions and features Randy Brecker on trumpet. Joining Bob as the percussionist on Next In Line is former Weather Report drummer Alex Acuna.

“The Tunnel” is a unique tune that features some beautiful guitar playing by the late, great Dean Brown. The album closes out with “Moving Eyes” from Bob's first album A Vision Forward and features guitarist Mike Stern.

Pete Roth Trio feat. Bill Bruford Release New Single “Full Circle” From Upcoming CD/DVD “Group Chat”

Pete Roth Trio feat. Bill Bruford - Group Chat Cover

Single releases today, Friday July 17, 2026

Listen to “Full Circle”: https://cherryred.co/FullCircle

The Pete Roth Trio release their new single “Full Circle” today, July 17, 2026! This is the first single from their upcoming live CD/DVD album Group Chat. This song is one of the first the Trio produced when they first started two or three years ago, and it’s the first track on the album. Unusually for Bill, it’s in a very common 4/4 groove! “Full Circle” also appears on the accompanying live DVD.

The Pete Roth Trio return with Group Chat, a striking new CD/DVD release that captures the spontaneity, interplay and fearless musical conversation at the heart of this exceptional band. Led by guitarist Pete Roth, alongside bassist Mike Pratt and legendary drummer Bill Bruford, Group Chat is Roth's third major album and a release of particular significance, marking Bruford's eagerly awaited return to headline performance after a 13-year hiatus, as well as his first appearance on new material in 19 years.

Produced by Pete Roth and Bill Bruford for Winterfold Records, Group Chat presents a trio that thrives on intimacy, risk and connection. Rooted in jazz but never constrained by it, the music moves fluidly through funk, contemporary classical influences and spontaneous improvisation, with nothing treated as untouchable. Original compositions such as Full Circle, Dancing With Grace and Original Sin sit alongside collaborative pieces including Part Of The Charm and Looking Forward To Looking Back, while the trio's inspired Improvisation on the Largo from Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 underlines the breadth of their musical imagination. The result is a record that feels adventurous, immediate and alive - music made in the moment by three musicians listening as deeply as they play.

The release is presented as a two-disc digipak CD/DVD edition, complete with a booklet containing extensive notes and group photographs. Alongside the nine-track audio album, the package includes a bonus 35-minute DVD offering further insight into the trio's world, with performances, an introduction, and a special spoken segment from Pete Roth.

The music press reaction’s have been emphatic. "The Pete Roth Trio is a band of equals, clearly loving the opportunity to improvise and have musical conversations," wrote Biff Bam Pop!, while Innerviews praised the music as "rich with nuance, invention, and telepathic rapport." Dr. Jazz Talks described the album as "a feast of rhythm and melody," and Make Weird Music summed up its appeal succinctly: "I wish more jazz was this much fun." Another review captured the trio's balancing act perfectly, calling it "loose enough that it could fall apart and tight enough that it grooves."

Pete Roth brings to Group Chat a background that spans blues, rock and jazz, shaped first in Germany and then refined through his studies and career in the UK. Mike Pratt, a highly regarded bassist, composer and producer with deep roots in jazz fusion and groove-based music, brings both harmonic imagination and rhythmic authority to the trio. For Bruford, whose career has encompassed groundbreaking work with Yes, King Crimson, Earthworks and a host of major jazz collaborators, Group Chat reflects a continuing commitment to the innovative, the unusual and the unlikely. Together, the three musicians create an experience that reshapes expectations of the guitar trio format, making space for melody, texture, groove and surprise in equal measure.

Group Chat is a vivid document of three distinctive musical voices in open conversation - intimate, exploratory, witty and deeply alive.

Asai Kastan Duo Releases New Ambient Jazz Album Earth Travelers

Asai Kastan Duo - Earth Travelers Cover

Earth Travelers is a new album by Asai Kastan Duo, consisting of Takeshi Asai on piano and Brian Kastan playing fretless bass. Together, they create an atmosphere of space and texture with an ongoing gentle flow of energy. This album is like waves on the ocean; waves are constantly flowing creating tension and release, as a wave gently rises and breaks then forms another wave. Together, the piano and bass are like the wave as the musical tension and release is an ongoing state of flow.

Earth Travelers offers the listener a chance to take a deep emotional journey and tap into an imaginary world. Earth Travelers covers several musical directions, from ballads, jazz blues, open grooves, short abstract moments, to open ambient spaces.

Released April 23rd, 2026.

The concept behind Earth Travelers is to create dialogue between acoustic piano and fretless bass. At times the bass plays the melody, sometimes it plays the groove, and vice versa with the piano. Earth Travelers offers a unique sensitive listening experience as the piano and fretless bass keep offering each other new musical ideas to interpret and develop into new energy. Often the album is ambient and mellow, sometimes swinging, sometimes grooving, and anything in between.

Earth Travelers was composed and recorded live at Takeshi Asai studio at DCT productions in New York City.

Asai Kastan Duo tour dates will be announced soon.

Takeshi Asai

Traditional yet modern, lyrical yet dramatic, jazz pianist Takeshi Asai has been a one-of-a-kind voice in New York’s jazz scene for more than ten years. His performance combines the melodic lyricism of Bill Evans with the feverish blues of Thelonious Monk, all enriched by the sophisticated improvisational style and the classical piano roots.

What makes Takeshi Asai’s music unique and aesthetic are his multitude sources of inspiration. He sees beauty in 12th-century French troubadours, Gregorian chants, Baroque and Romantic traditions, 20th-century music (i.e. Janáček, Takemitsu), religious music (Faure, Poulenc), the Beatles, Irish and Japanese folk music, as well as modern electronic music.

Besides his constant club engagements in NYC with talented contemporaries and legends, Takeshi Asai has a hugely successful international career; touring in Poland, UK, France, Germany, Egypt, Japan, South Korea and Australia.

He currently lives in New York, where he runs his own production company.

Experimental Jazz Guitarist Ian Smit Releases New Album ¿QUÉ? Feat. David Torn, Tom Rainey, and Scott Petito – OUT NOW!

Experimental jazz guitarist Ian Smit has released his new album ¿QUÉ? on December 5, 2025. The album features Scott Petito on acoustic/electric bass and as recording engineer, Tom Rainey on drums, Ian Smit on electric/acoustic guitar/effects, and David Torn on electric/national steel guitar/effects.

Smit's purpose for making music with David, Tom and Scott was to be conversational with lots of dynamic ups and downs, which is very natural to all of them. That was the only stated "instruction" before getting into the studio. This recording is fully improvised. The tracks “Bee Still” and “Raindrops and Waterspouts” began as loose harmonic structures that Smit presented to the band. Everything else was created in the moment with no discussion prior to the red light going on.

When playing music that isn't formally composed, the goal was to create spontaneous compositions through musical dialog and interactions between the players, whether by use of melody, groove, sound interventions, or even through silence. Not everyone needed to be "speaking" to make a point.

Ian Smit has known David Torn for decades. David produced his first professional recording called Ping with Peter Biedermann and Steve Meltzer, as Steve introduced Smit to David way back when, and they recorded at Scott Petito's first studio in 1987. Both David and Scott played on that which was only released on cassette.

Smit reacquainted with Scott Petito after many years through a recording session with a friend, where Scott was the mixing/mastering engineer. Smit was blown away at the vibe in the studio, and that planted the seed to create this unique recording. At that moment, Scott was destined to play bass and record ¿QUÉ?.

After hearing and seeing Tom Rainey perform with David Torn over the years, Smit decided he was the perfect drummer for this session, as he is so expressive and interactive. Says Smit, “Tom was definitely number one on the list. This recording would not have come to fruition if Tom wasn't available.”

¿QUÉ? was recorded with David, Tom and Smit in the same room, with only gobo panels between them to intentionally generate feedback when needed. Scott meanwhile was in a separate room, as he played acoustic bass on several tracks and electric on others.

David played national steel as well as guitar for this recording (his oud was under the weather). When Smit played acoustic, or David played the national steel, they were in a separate room. When either of them played acoustically, the other played electrically. In the stereo spectrum, Smit's guitar is on the left with a sometimes-utilized effects amp almost in the middle, and David is on the right.

Says Smit, “It was the first time Tom and Scott ever played together, but their interactions were inspiring. Scott hadn't played with David in a very long time, and even though Scott and David played on that 1987 recording of mine, they overdubbed. I, on the other hand, never played with any of the fellas. Was all that risky? Evidently not...I was riding on a rocket ship!”

Personnel:
Scott Petito: Acoustic/Electric Bass, Composer, Production Assistant, Recording/Mastering Engineer

Current activities include performing and recording music with the Tom Rainey Trio as well as his quintet, Obbligato. Tom also continues performing with many of the aforementioned artists.

Ian Smit:

Ian Smit is a composer, guitarist, melodist, noise maker. As a self-proclaimed "closeted folkie" he plays within no particular genre as he grew up exposed to so many styles of music and influences from all over the world, all of which passed through the "Smit Filter" to emerge in his own personal voice.

He decided early on that he would rather work a day job than play music that would make him view playing music as a job...a sentiment initially shared by David Torn who obviously carved a career as an influential musician..."It all comes down to choices!"

Still, Smit has managed to create art for many decades starting with Ping in 1987 produced by David Torn, recorded at Scott Petito's studio.

Monkeyworks: 7–13-piece band depending on the situation: Monkeyworks

e'fessioux: An improvising quartet with Bill Weisbach, Steve Foreman, Clive Smith: Music | e'fessioux

Savage and Smit: A series of duo, quartet and quintets with Rick Savage, Joe Vincent Tranchina, Pete MacDonald, Steve LaSpina: of course | Savage & Smit

So It Goes: A vocal improv ensemble with Kevin Brown and J. Brunka on acoustic bass, Steve Decker on drums, and Doug Gill on vocals/lyrics and guitar. The self-titled tune has been entered for consideration for the 68th Annual Grammy Nomination under Best Alternative Music Performance: So It Goes... in | So It Goes

Brian Kastan: Icelandic Journeys. A fully improvised excursion with Brian Kastan on Bass, Dave Berger on drums: Colors of Iceland (feat. Ian Smit & Dave Berger)

Smit has also played and collaborated on countless recordings of singer/songwriters and instrumentalists over 40 years, most notably on Chris Koch's Scenes from the Coastal Evacuation and QWERT's Book of M.

David Torn:

Holiday Jazz Track Feature: Michael Dulin-We Three Kings Track

If you ever feel like you’re in the mood for some solo piano music with jazz and the Holiday spirit, look no further than the latest track from Michael Dulin covering the timeless classic “We Three Kings.”

It is one of my personal favorites because of its melody and meaning. To hear it performed with singularity and with such elegance is another treat for the senses.

The cover art, with its regal gold crowns and seasonal colors, alongside Michael, looks like a Christmas card. And how perfect is that, considering what the artist is trying to convey through his fingers?

With each successive track release, Michael Dulin has captured my attention. His ability to include every intricacy of the music and meaning takes a song to another level of sophistication and enjoyment.

“We Three Kings” is a reminder of the importance and meaning of a holiday and of how music can mold and shape it within a non-typical genre while still maintaining its essence. Michael Dulin has succeeded in doing that.

BORN OUT OF THE LEGENDARY BROOKLYN RAGA MASSIVE (BRM) JAM SESSIONS, QUADRATURE IS SET TO RELEASE THEIR DEBUT ALBUM BLACK HOLE BLUES THROUGH DEKO ENTERTAINMENT (ADA/WARNER MUSIC GROUP)

Stockton, NJ - Quadrature is a musical powerhouse that redefines sonic frontiers with their electric blend of raga, rock, jazz and psychedelia. Rooted in deep musical traditions, yet soaring into uncharted territories, the band crafts soundscapes that defy laws of genre, space and time. They feature the magnetic sitar/effects of Neel Murgai, the experimental Firebird trumpet/effects of Indofunk Satish, the structural rhythm of Tripp Dudley on drum set, and the electric grooves of Damon Banks on bass.

Emerging from the legendary Brooklyn Raga Massive (BRM) jam sessions, Quadrature began their journey with fully improvised sets rooted in ragas, captivating audiences on the streets of Brooklyn. In 2023, they were artists in residence at David Rockefeller Creative Arts Center at The Pocantico Center, where they further developed their sound and arrangements. They have performed at Globalfest at Lincoln Center, Ragas Live Festival at Pioneer Works, Barclays Center Plaza, Joe's Pub and more. Inspired by their name, which derives from mathematics and astronomy, Quadrature is the area under the curve of raga and contemporary music, working the right angles while embracing odd time signatures and black hole blues.

Watch “Black Hole Blues” Video: https://www.quadraturemusic.com/bhbmusicvideo

When asked about their debut release, Murgai had this to say, “My sound on sitar has evolved a lot the last few years as I electrified and got together with the like minded musicians in Quadrature. This recording documents our take on raga inspired prog rock, jazz and more.”  Satish continues, “When we set out to record this album, we didn’t really have any lofty goals in mind, we just wanted to capture the feeling of playing together, having the same kind of deep musical conversations and interactions that were happening on our live shows. And we totally captured that! We had a blast making it, and ended up creating exactly the kind of music that we’d want to listen to ourselves! We hope that energy and joy translates to our listening audience”.

FORMER GENERATION X GUITARIST DERWOOD ANDREWS LAUNCHES MOONDOG INSPIRED PROJECT SHAGBARN

RELEASES “SOLID GOLD TIMEPIECE” THROUGH DEKO ENTERTAINMENT AND HOSTS LIVE ONLINE LISTENING PARTY FRIDAY OCTOBER 24TH

Stockton, NJ - Derwood Andrews has traversed a unique world of music. He is a guitarist hailed for his sound in Generation X, Westworld, Empire, and Speedtwinn. Though the multi-faceted musician that is Derwood shows himself more when you become familiar with his projects like Shagbarn or Moondogg, a duo with Westworld vocalist Elizabeth Westwood. The experimental-drum and bass-rock duo got its name from Louis Hardin (a.k.a. Moondog) himself. Derwood and the Dog had a chance to chat it up backstage at a concert in London during the 1990s. Hardin let him name the group Moondogg, as long as there was an extra G.

So now the story continues with Solid Gold Timepiece from Shagbarn which is comprised of Andrews and Moondog devotee Julian Calv. Andrews explains, “I posted a photo on Instagram, a picture of me and Moondog backstage at one of his shows and someone (Julian) commented on the photo posted, and later shared he was a Moondog devotee. I played Moondog Speaks to him and he sent me a track he had recently made called Stride. I really loved it. I added guitars and sent it back with a message: ‘We should make an album…’ Julian Calv then sent me nine fresh Trimba backing tracks. I just listened for hours until the music and song titles presented themselves. Months of fine tuning and experimenting ensued, along with guest performances from neighbors and friends.”

Julian Calv considers himself a composer first. The trimbist and singer was a student of Stefan Lakatos, Louis Hardin’s sole trimba protege, and similarly is Lakatos’ sole protege. He is one of a few musicians who commonly perform the music of Hardin, which heavily influences his music. Calv says, “Shagbarn is a cathartic experience I have been waiting for. Much of the music I perform is composed and I follow the composition, but I have such a passion for improvising and reacting in real time to all sounds. Solid Gold Timepiece created the space for me to do just that. It started with my trimba beat, then Derwood would add an instrument, then I would, he’d record a friend, I’d record a friend, and we kept going until we knew it was done.”

Listen here: https://push.fm/ps/pkydchym

Recorded by Derwood Andrews at RubberCheese Studios California, David Kenyon in Vermont and Devlin Thorn at Fireside Sound in Joshua Tree California, Solid Gold Timepiece is a varied collection of music including stand out tracks “Moonface Raindogs”, “All the Brave Souls”, and first single “I’m on my way to a Better Place”. Shagbarn will kick things off this Friday October 24th with a live on-line listening party hosted on Volume.com.

Experimental Jazz Guitarist Ian Smit to Release New Album "¿QUÉ?" Feat. David Torn, Tom Rainey, and Scott Petito

Experimental jazz guitarist Ian Smit announces that he will release his new album ¿QUÉ? on December 5, 2025.

His characterful & compositionally textural work has had material impact & influence on both film scoring — through his own scores, in addition to his creative contributions to scores by Carter Burwell, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Cliff Martinez, Howard Shore, Mark Isham, and others — and, generally, upon contemporary electric, electro-acoustic & electronic music.

Funk Instrumental and Vocal Review and Interview (Raphael Groten) - Leo & The Goat-Shine

Release Date:  October 1, 2025

Label: Independent

Website

Raphael Groten and his son Oliver are Leo & The Goat, and their maiden release is Shine.

Raphael, known for his solo acoustic guitar releases, is now venturing into a new world of funk and light atmosphere with his latest release, Shine. This unique blend of funk, jazz, and blues, with electric and acoustic elements, promises a musical journey that’s both familiar and refreshingly new, all for the love of music.

So, get ready for an eclectic mixture of instrumentation and clever vocalizations. There is never a dull moment.

“The Regulator” begins with funky riffs from the electric guitar, as some additional sounds are added to the composition as it grows and expands its reach. The bass is solid, and some subtly jazz-inflected keys are added. The lead guitar comes in with some sharp leads, as it gives way to a heavy bass lead, then it makes a full circle, and a violin is added. This is a complex yet enjoyable blend of Americana, acoustic, and electric elements that was a fun listen to get your head into the right space for what may come next.

The title track, “Shine,” continues the flow, and right away, they move away from instrumental music to add vocals. The vocals are a rap, but very pleasant, as the music is a combination of funk, blues, and jazz that come together, bringing everything they have to offer to the listener.  This one has some good hooks and thoughtful vocals for you to think about. A flute makes its way into the mix, which is quite beautiful. The bass is a giant, along with the percussion, in keeping this on track.

“Ride” keeps things funky and fresh with some easy keys that float over the top as the rest of the elements come to the front of the composition. The guitar is key here with some crisp acoustic licks. Then tenor sax is added, giving the piece a definite jazz-funk feel. With horns and the funky backbeat, it reminded me of Steely Dan.

In “Diggin’ in the Garden” the horns continue to assert their presence as the vocals return to kick this one off. The vocalizations have a soulful Dr. John inflection. It comes from the depths of one soul to sing like that. The electric guitar has a retro funk sound you would have heard back on 70s releases, like from Issac Hayes, for instance. This is a nod to Mother Nature and her healing ways, encouraging you to get down on your knees and dig in to feel the earth between your fingers. Funky and bluesy, it gets into your consciousness as your feet can’t help but move. Diggin’ in the garden, diggin’ for the truth…

“Silver Linings” proceeds at a slow tempo with the guitar, drums, and bass. Then a Spanish-flavored acoustic guitar arrives tastefully. A sound effect that is like something flying away is an added interesting element. The leads on the acoustic are divine and resonate clearly within the framework of this composition. To switch it up, an electric guitar adds its color and vibrancy. The transition is well executed while keeping the tempo on the low end, nice and smooth and easy.

“Cornerstone” features cool guitar effects as Raphael starts singing. The backbeat is steady and consistently tight as Raphael delivers another rap. This is not rap that is abrasive or loud because their message is spiritual and very thoughtful for each listener to absorb and process. The lyrics are a great message to deliver to those willing to listen. “To clarify and amplify to be the best of we need to be” is an example of their message. The funk holds on firmly musically as the vocals are mixed well and just an icing on the cake.

“Riff Raph” promises to entertain with a lot of sharp guitar work straight away. The bass and drums keep the funk alive as the guitar answers in so many ways. The flexibility of the instrument is evident, and the use of pedals provides some cool effects. With clarity and crispness, the guitar playing shows it can make funk, jazz, and blues shine in every note. This one is an instrumental gem and one of my favorites.

“Puddin’” proceeds with synth sounds, transitioning into a diverse array of instrumentation, and the vocals return, maintaining their one-instrumental-to-vocal track flow. The guitar lives in the subtle yet effective funk lines, and the bass is absolute and very important as usual. This time, Rebecca Kodis’s voice and violin are added for a change in texture. for a change in texture. All I could think about, looking at the title, is Moe of The Three Stooges saying “Puddin Head!”

“Play” is the first time there were two consecutive vocal tracks that dismiss my previous statement about how they offered variety by switching back and forth. However, the vocals are not predominant here; it’s the instrumentation that clearly takes the lead with some stinging leads from the electric guitar as the bass takes the melodic path. Consistency is what makes all this music so strong from start to finish.

“Eastslide” is a play on words. One quick look at that title and you think it’s Eastside. The guitar is the main instrument at the beginning of this funk-filled musical journey. Fittingly, they close it out with some reverberating electric guitar leads, as the bass reminds you of its paramount importance in this genre.

Shine is an enjoyable, light-hearted listen that will keep your interest due to the outstanding musicianship and clear production values. The high musicianship and production quality are evident throughout, enhancing the listening experience and leaving a lasting impression.

Track Feature: Michael Dulin - Slow Burn Track

https://michaeldulin.com

Michael Dulin’s piano magic returns with his latest track release, “Slow Burn.”  This is a jazz instrumental track that will get your attention.

The title, “Slow Burn,” hints at a journey of anticipation and discovery. This track, like a slow burn, allows ample time for a listener to savor every note, building anticipation for the next musical revelation.

This is instrumental jazz, featuring numerous transitions and diverse elements. As the artwork suggests, the piano keys are ablaze with passion and color. And jazz typically has those two attributes that give it that crucial element that can transcend time.

The music is a delightful exploration of the transitory nature of jazz. In a short span, Michael Dulin manages to touch upon the diverse styles within the genre, showcasing the complexity, excitement, and color that jazz can offer.

“Slow Burn” is not just a track; it’s a heartfelt tribute to the essence of jazz music. It eloquently speaks the language of jazz, letting the music itself pay a respectful homage to this timeless genre.

Deep Energy Orchestra Unveils Expansive New Album The Science of Sound on 7D Media Feat. Members of Snarky Puppy, Kansas, King Crimson, The 4th Dimension, Shakti & Others!

Deep Energy Orchestra will release its third studio album, The Science of Sound, on October 24, 2025, through 7D Media. Conceived and led by composer, producer, and bassist Jason Everett (aka Mister E), the album represents a culmination of global collaboration, complex composition, and genre-defying instrumentation.

Following the ensemble’s critically acclaimed albums Playing With Fire (2018) and The Return (2020), this new release builds on the orchestra’s distinctive fusion of Indian classical rhythms, progressive rock, jazz, funk, and orchestral textures.

The Science of Sound brings together an exceptional roster of internationally recognized artists, including:
Joe Deninzon, electric violinist of the band Kansas
Gary Husband, legendary jazz fusion keyboardist and drummer (John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth)
Trey Gunn, Warr guitarist and longtime member of King Crimson
Adam Holzman, former keyboardist for Miles Davis and collaborator with Steven Wilson
V. Selvaganesh, renowned Indian percussionist (Shakti, Masters of Percussion)

Additional contributors include Mark Lettieri (Snarky Puppy), U. Rajesh, Mahesh Vinayakram, Radhika Iyer, John Wubbenhorst, Eric “Doc” Smith, and a full string section featuring violin, viola, and cello.

A Cohesive Musical Narrative

The album features eight compositions, six of which were written by Everett, with additional works contributed by John Wubbenhorst (“The Dancers”) and U. Rajesh with Ganesh Kumar (“Fireflies”). Each piece reflects Everett’s commitment to exploring rhythmically advanced and melodically rich material while remaining grounded in ensemble interplay.

Tracks like “Morning Over Madrid” and “Solar Playground” balance compositional precision with space for improvisation. “Captain Quirk” highlights Deninzon and Holzman in tight counterpoint, while “The Secrets of Subtraction” explores tension and release through intricate call-and-response melody. The closing track, “Stargazing,” offers a meditative resolution that underscores the album’s emotional breadth.

Production and Vision

The album was produced and arranged by Jason Everett, with engineering, mixing, and mastering by Don Gunn (Soundgarden, Peter Frampton). The sound is immersive and detailed, capturing the dynamic range and nuance of each performer while presenting a unified, expansive sonic experience.

“The Science of Sound is about exploring how music can communicate across genres, cultures, and traditions,” says Everett. “It’s a collaborative work that honors the strengths of every artist involved, while serving a larger musical vision.”

Says Joe Deninzon (Kansas), “Deep Energy Orchestra embodies the influences of Mahavishnu Orchestra, Shakti, and a wide array of jazz/rock fusion and Middle Eastern influences. Music that has influenced me immensely and always gives me a dopamine rush when I play it. It’s an honor to be a part of this beautiful project with such world class musicians!”

Here’s what’s been said about Jason Everett and Deep Energy Orchestra:

Through his performance and compositional work, Jason has built respect with major members of the Indian music community and has been hailed by influential guitarists and bassists.” – Geoffrey Larsen, Musical Director of Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra

Everett delivers memorable melodies rendered with Eastern vocal vibrato, and engaging ensemble improvisation – all over a spectrum of ever-shifting world grooves and natural-sounding odd meters.” – Bass Guitar Magazine

Jason’s impressive bass work will dazzle, but his playing transcends the instrument to become a pure source of expression. His compositions are equally full of wonder and atmosphere for a sonic journey. A top-notch musician!”– Kevin Johnson NoTreble Bass Magazine

This is now my fourth time listening to Deep Energy Orchestra’s Playing with Fire. Again, I had absolutely no idea on what I was going to expect by listening to this incredible project. I wouldn’t call them a super group, because it would be too much of a cop-out. They are a family by working together as a team. And for me, Playing with Fire brings the Octet as one.” – Zachary Nathanson, Echoes and Dust

Playing with Fire sort of hovers over and moves between two camps—progressive rock and progressive raga—of progressive jazz. Its gemstone is "Resolve/Improv/Caravan," a twenty-minute journey through outer and inner space that spans an encyclopedia of styles and sounds: Everett's bass stomps and glides behind the strings' snakecharming melody, then steps out front to continue oscillating between mellow and raging, and later recites a floating tone poem; Selvaganish at first plays but then breaks into vocalizing his tabla part; Gunn sears your ears with his closing solo; and all this comes together, drifts apart, and comes back.” - Chris M. Slawecki, All About Jazz

Not one prone to comparators, but musically, and in the Western hemisphere, John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra, along with the much lauded Shakti album from 1975 must surely poke their heads around the corner.” – Bob Mulvey, The Progressive Aspect
