Percy Howard, a NorCal based singer-songwriter and product of the New York no-wave avant-garde, has performed and or toured with members of Living Colour, King Crimson, Swans, Guns N’ Roses (Buckethead), Oxbow, Henry Cow, This Heat, and Brand X. Percy has also shared European festival stages with Brazilian music legend Caetano Veloso and ambient pioneer Stephan Micus.
Percy is the generator of the Meridiem project, which has included collaborative input from Bill Laswell, Vernon Reid, Charles Hayward, Trey Gunn, Fred Frith, Robert Rich, Buckethead, Jarboe, Happy Rhodes, and Jill Tracy, amongst others. Percy's Genre-defying mix of rock, jazz, soul and classical influences have drawn critical attention and praise from all over the planet. Percy has recently started the record label Necessary Angel, which he sees as an archival entity whose sole mission is to spread as much sonic beauty across the world as possible.
Influenced by the Laurel Canyon Sound, Bowie, Steely Dan, Richie Havens, and Scott Walker, but created in the context of my own experience, Percy’s new album “The Stars and The Well” is unabashedly nostalgic, consumed with Romance and unafraid of the fragility of love. It’s a retrospective of the impact of love in my life, in all its forms… From the heights (The Stars) to the depths (The Well).
Please listen with your ears, mind and heart open.

Stockton, NJ - Some of the best music comes when accomplished musicians combine their talents in an effort to create something new and different. At Deko’s 2Trax Studio that is exactly what is happening. Starting in December 2022, a combination of Deko artists and special guests got together under the title 2Trax Sessions. First up was the song “Columbia,” which is a shout-out to a blue-collar street in New Jersey. For each artist involved, we find out it reminds them of their own small pieces of Americana. Columbia Avenue is a place many of us can relate to, and as the song says, it’s often too short a road.
Next up is “Smile,” a get up and move, soul infused song featuring the combined talents of vocalist Joe Cerisano (Trans-Siberian Orchestra); backing vocalist Lisa Gee (independent artist); guitarists Frank Perrego (2Trax Sessions musician) and Tony Cardenas-Montana (Great White); organist Doug Friedman (2Trax Sessions musician); keyboardist Charlie Calv (Angel); drummer/percussionist Dave Anthony (Dennis DeYoung); bassist Eric Plotkin (2Trax Sessions musician); the Uptown Horns (Rolling Stones, Robert Plant, James Brown). Deko president and 2Trax Studio owner Bruce Pucciarello elaborates, “Driving home from my twentieth Tower of Power concert and the groove for this hit me. I wrote the music, smiling, enjoying the rhythms, so the lyrics worked off the feeling I was having. This team of artists takes this song to heights I never anticipated. I hope this version spreads the same smile that inspired me to write it. Smile!”
Studio City, CA – Lightyear Entertainment announces the release of Club Nouveau’s “The Collection” on Vinyl for the first time, in honor of the 25th anniversary of the album’s Compact Disc/Digital release in 1998.
The LP contains the band’s biggest hit song “Rumors” and its worldwide hit of the Bill Withers song, “Lean On Me.”
“Rumors alone generates about 2 million streams a month,” said Arnie Holland, CEO of Lightyear. “That kind of fan base 25 years after this album’s initial release deserves a vinyl.”
Along with such acts as Sly & The Family Stone, Con Funk Shun, En Vogue, MC Hammer, and Tony! Toni! Tone!, Club Nouveau have made an indelible mark on the Bay Area’s rich urban music scene. Since forming in 1986, Club Nouveau have sold well over ten million units, toured extensively, charted eleven Billboard hit singles, and won numerous awards. Their music has resurfaced in numerous rap hits which have sampled its infectious melodies.
This unique eight song Club Nouveau LP collection chronicles the successes of the Bay Area group throughout its various lineup changes from the short-lived predecessor, Timex Social Club and its number one hit single “Rumors,” through such proven hits as the 1987 # 1 pop chart single “Lean On Me” plus such slept on potential hits as 1992’s “I like Your Way.” Also included in “The Collection” are three 1998 Club Nouveau tracks; “Keep Using Me,” “What Kind Of Love (Secret Rendezvous),” and “Why (You Wanna Make Me Cry).”
Since forming 37 years ago Club Nouveau has gone through various lineup changes but the group’s two consistent figures have been writer/singer/ producer & entrepreneur Jay King and singer/songwriter Valerie Watson. “Looking back, Club Nouveau was a dream come true. It’s been an incredible artistic experience,” said Valerie Watson from her LA home.
Sun King Rising’s second album, Signs & Wonders, is to be released on October 1st on CD, vinyl, and top download and streaming sites. Sun King Rising is the professional moniker of singer/songwriter/piano player John Blangero who hails from Port Isabel, Texas.
He calls his music “the new wave of southern rock and soul music.”
PeacockSunrise Records is the Americana/Rock label spinoff of Nick Katona’s successful Progressive Rock label, Melodic Revolution. As with Sun King Rising’s highly acclaimed debut album, Delta Tales, Pittsburgh’s Ace Acker served as producer.
Save for Queen’s Brian May, Blangero is perhaps incomparable in all the world. Like May—Queen’s guitarist—Blangero is not only a brilliant, entirely original musical artist but also a world-renowned scientist (May is an astrophysicist) specializing in genetics research.
Blangero’s music draws from his own southern family roots, the literary genius of William Faulkner, the bluesy compositional brilliance of George Gershwin, the blue-eyed soul of Elton John, and the funky rhythms and horns of 60s-70s Muscle Shoals. Soaring electric guitars add spice to this gumbo. It is a unique fusion of innate design with heartfelt musical expression— “the Genetics of Soul.”
“With this album, Sun King Rising has made a quantum leap,” says Katona. “Musically and lyrically, Signs & Wonders rocks hard while engaging the imagination. It is thematically coherent, complex, and sophisticated.”
Blangero attributes this to the vastly improved circumstances under which Acker was able to produce it. “We started recording the first album in January 2020. Two months later, the COVID-19 pandemic locked the whole world down,” he says.
Coping with resulting restrictions on travel and meetings forced Blangero and Acker to complete the production remotely, with thirty-two different players and singers recording in multiple studios across the country. Says Blangero, “It was a logistical challenge, to say the least.”
With Signs & Wonders, the production team had no such hurdles. Recording again at Pittsburgh’s Maplewood Studio with engineer David Granati at the helm, Acker put together a full 5-piece band, a horn section, and a background chorus with the city’s most acclaimed talents. “Most of the cuts on the album we recorded live at Maplewood, with the same band,” Acker explained, “resulting in a far more consistent sound. The logistics were a breeze.”
Signs & Wonder is a collection of Blangero’s southern noir stories set to music, with a cast of colorful characters, intrigue, tales of sin and redemption, murder without justice, and love without limits. Had William Faulkner and Tennessee Williams been lyricists, they might have written deeply nuanced musical stories like Sun King Rising’s.
The album’s first single, “No. 6 Magnolia Avenue,” is classic 60s/70s horn band pop in the vein of Chicago, Spiral Staircase, and Blood, Sweat and Tears.
Concurrent with the single’s release, PeacockSunrise will debut its cinematic music video directed by Dante Ludovici, the man behind the cameras for the official “Free Will in China Blue” video from the first album, as well.
Last Stop On The Love Train! Coming Soon To A City Near You!
After more than 60 years electrifying people all over the world, the mighty, legendary, R&B/Soul kings The O’Jays are set to embark on their final tour! Featuring original members Eddie Levert Sr and Walter Williams Sr, who have been singing together for over 70 years!
The O’Jays are touring history, a connection to an era and a sound that formed the soundtrack for the lives of several generations. In 1972, Gamble & Huff, a team of producers and songwriters with whom the O’Jays had been working for several years, signed the group to their Philadelphia International label.
With this magic formula, often called The Sound of Philadelphia, The O’Jays scored their first number 1 and million-selling song, “Backstabbers:, followed by more chart-topping pop and R&B singles including “Love Train,” “Put Your Hands Together,” “For The Love of Money,” “I Love Music,” “Darlin’ Darlin’ Baby (Sweet, Tender, Love),” “Livin’ For The Weekend” and “Use Ta Be My Girl.”
This success propelled The O’Jays to be the first black vocal group to perform in arenas throughout America during the 70s and 80s. Eddie Levert Sr, Walter Williams Sr, and Eric Nolan Grant, who joined the group in 1995, continue to thrill fans today.
“The reason that this is our last tour is because, between Eddie and I, our ages will be over 160 years old by the end of the tour. I will be 60, and Eddie... you can do the rest of the math. But really, we wanted one last tour to say goodbye to our friends, family and fans, and ride The Love Train together, one last time.” - Walter Williams Sr
“I was thinking that I would quietly retire, but our fans and my body weren’t having it...The love and physical benefits of performing keeps us on the younger side of our age. This tour is a celebration of all of our lives and the struggles and joys that got us to today. It is time for us to say goodbye and we would like to do it in person. Please come join us as we play the music we have shared together over the past 60 years, one last time.” - Eddie Levert
Throughout their career The O’Jays have achieved 10 Gold albums, 9 Platinum albums and 10 #1 hits. It’s been a long journey but thanks to the fans the LOVE TRAIN is still going strong!
The O’Jays were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2005 and honored with BET’s LifeTime Achievement Award in 2009. In 2013, they were inducted into The Official R&B Music Hall of Fame.

Emerging alternative pop-rock artist Keeper is destined to become the talk of the town with hypnotising new anthem ‘Soul’. Based in London, Keeper has been described as an ‘artist you need to hear’ by Alternative Press. Having received support from Spotify playlists such as ‘New Pop UK’, ‘Hyper Pop’ and ‘Misfits 2.0’, it’s fair to say that Keeper is turning heads. Drawing inspiration from the likes of pop-punk, emo and hyper-pop music, Keeper could easily find himself supporting the likes of Enter Shikari, Neck Deep, Glaive and Dorian Electra.
Speaking about the new release, Keeper shares, “Soul, for me, has two meanings. The song itself is about getting bored. Bored of where you live, bored of the people you're with, bored of the shop, and bored with the sky above you. It's a song about having a need to break out, like a Hyperpop version of Pop-Punks "I hate this town". How life starts off fine, but gradually the monotonous routine of it all leaves you feeling burnt out, but what's the point of leaving?
The chorus is someone begging to run away, but waiting for a reason, because otherwise, what's the point. The video is a little different. It is about how certain larger than life news-anchors instigate and frame situations for monetary gain. The idea is cartoonishly based of Manufactured consent by Noam Chomsky."
Sun King Rising's debut album, Delta Tales, will be released this Fall on CD, vinyl, and leading download and streaming sites. Sun King Rising is the professional moniker of singer/songwriter/piano player John Blangero who hails from Port Isabel, Texas. PeacockSunrise Records is the Americana/Rock label spinoff of Nick Katona’s successful Progressive Rock label, Melodic Revolution. The album is produced by New York-based producer, Steven “Ace” Acker.
“Blangero is steeped in the traditions of southern rock and country soul,” said Katona. “His primary influences on this record are the arrangements, vocal stylings, and big band vibe of Leon Russell and Joe Cocker. We are excited to have him as an artist.”
Blangero’s songs are filled with memorable hooks, rocking piano, driving rhythms, a powerful horn section, and soulful female background singers a la’ Ray Charles’ Raelettes.
“I’ve been wanting to do a solo Americana/southern soul/classic rock type of album for many years,” Blangero said. “I love the music of Joe Cocker, Leon Russell, Dan Penn, and others and I wanted to capture some of that vibe in my own writing. So, I started writing and recording solo demos of songs like Let There Be Light, Down the Delta Road, Drive Me to Nashville, In A State of Grace, and Love Turns Grey.
“After hearing these demos on my ReverbNation channel, Nick contacted me,” Blangero recalled. “He told me ‘OMG, you have got to release these songs on my label.
“Melodic Revolution is a successful Prog Rock label, but to accommodate my style of music he launched a new imprint, which he called PeacockSunrise. I felt that Nick had the experience and knowledge to take Delta Tales to market successfully, so I signed with the label.”
Acker was the co-founder and guitarist of 1970’s MCA recording artists, LAW. He has since served as producer for various artists and projects in New York, Pittsburgh, Ohio, Nashville, and Jackson, MS and has been affiliated with SST Studios in Weehawken, NJ since 2007. “I’ve been a fan of Ace’s work since his early days with LAW,” Blangero said. “I felt he was a perfect choice for this project.”
The recording of Delta Tales was a fascinating task, spanning four months, from January 2020 to mid-May. The Coronavirus shutdown in April forced Blangero and Acker to complete the production remotely with players and singers recording in several different studios across the country rather than recording additional live, full-band studio sessions.
Said Blangero, “It was a logistical challenge, but Ace did a great job organizing the players and the sessions. I am proud of this record. We captured the magic that I’ve always heard in my head with great background singers, classic horn parts, tight rhythm sections, killer guitar, funky keys, and my own acoustic piano parts. It sounds like it could have been recorded in the early 70s, which is the vibe I was going for.”
In addition to his work as recording artist, Blangero is also an internationally renowned genetic scientist at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine, for whom he continued to work while recording Delta Tales. You might aptly call his music, then, “The Genetics of Soul.”
Watch Sun King Rising's new video for “The Snake”:
Blangero’s prodigious gifts revealed themselves when he started taking piano lessons at the age five in his hometown of New Castle, Pennsylvania. Five years later, he had absorbed not only the fundamentals of classical music, but also gospel and rock music. He joined his first rock band at 14 and was soon composing and singing his own music.
Apprenticeships in a series of area bands culminated in the formation of his own original band, called Harlequin. By then his music had evolved into a combination of prog rock and glam, presented with all the theatrics such music generally entails. Harlequin retained regional popularity throughout the fertile Pennsylvania/Ohio/West Virginia market.
At the height of the band’s popularity, though, he gave up music to obtain his Ph.D. in biomedical research. During his twenty-year hiatus from music, he ascended to rock star stature in the international scientific community. But the musical beast within him could not be stilled forever. Playing casually with blues bands in San Antonio revived that beast and rekindled Blangero’s creative spark.
In closing, Blangero said, “I tried to capture my southern soul on this album. I hope that the overall message it conveys is one of positivity, especially in these dark times. I think we have put together strong songs that will make people tap their feet and sing along, too! For me, the song is everything.”

Living Soul Blues legend, Billy Price and the Billy Price Band
are back with their second album in as many years. Put Billy Price on
your list of seasoned musicians who save their best work for last and refuse to
go gentle into that good night. After looking at the album cover featuring Mr.
Price strutting down the street with a lean, mean Doberman on a leash and a
first listen to these twelve tracks, you’ll realize this man has found artistic
liberty born from nothing left to prove and nothing left to lose.
Collaborating with producer Kid Andersen and longtime guitarist
Mike Zito, Billy Price’s Dog Eat Dog is destined to follow the
path of 2018’s Reckoning and end up on many yearly “best-of”
lists.
In several of the finer moments on Dog Eat Dog, the guitar
pierces a note which fills the air like a car slamming on its brakes. Then, he
allows the listener to catch their breath, before pulling forward with a
soulful riff and slow-riding through the city streets.
On songs such as “Lose My Number” and “My Love Will Never Die,”
Billy Price resists the urge to step in front of the groove. Instead, he knows
he’s in the thick of it and rides it to its natural conclusion. “Same Old
Heartaches” combines the soul, blues, and jazz elements with smoothest of
smooth harmonies reminiscent of the Temptations or Spinners.
Like many excellent records, it is difficult to put a label on
it. Dog Eat Dog is no exception. Call it Blues, call it soul,
call it R&B. I prefer to call it a damn good record.

Los Angeles, CA - After wowing audiences with a rollicking Christmas-themed release at the close of 2018, the icon of Detroit rock and soul, Mitch Ryder, returns with this superb collection of all-new recordings - Detroit Breakout! The album celebrates both the music of Detroit as well as the classic, timeless songs of Ryder’s generation. From a smokin’ new version of Ryder’s own blockbuster hit single “Devil With A Blue Dress On” to The Capitols’ “Cool Jerk” to Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay, Detroit Breakout! has something for every true rock n’ roller including special guest performances by fellow Motor City alumni James Williamson of The Stooges and Wayne Kramer of MC5 as well as blues legends Joe Louis Walker and Arthur Adams PLUS the New York Dolls' Sylvain Sylvain, The Runaways' Cherie Currie, daughter of B.B. King, Shirley King and more!
Many of the guests who contributed to the project sang the praises of both Ryder and the project as a whole:
“I love Mitch Ryder and I love ‘Devil With A Blue Dress On.’ Always one of my favorite songs. I had fun playing on the track. The finished version with Mitch sounds really current. Wow…just killer!" - James Williamson (The Stooges)
“I’ve been smitten with Mitch Ryder since I first heard ‘Devil With A Blue Dress On.’ When asked if I’d like to back this legend? Heck! I’ve worked all my life for this!” - Cherie Currie (The Runaways)
“[Mitch Ryder] is among the greatest soul singers of our generation and the opportunity to play guitar on his version of ‘Cool Jerk’ is a distinct honor for me. It's one of the greatest songs in recording history. Perfect in every way. I count this as a high-point in my career.” - Wayne Kramer (The MC5)
“‘Dirty Water’ is such a garage classic. It’s the kind of music I’d listen to all the time as a kid and played in my earliest bands. Mitch’s vocals kicked ass and I really like how my guitar part turned out. I could play this kind of music all day long.” - Sylvain Sylvain (New York Dolls)
“It’s always a dream come true when you get an opportunity to be part of a project with one of your heroes!! I find myself in that situation, performing with Mitch Ryder.” - Joe Louis Walker
“This has been an incredible experience for me. Mitch Ryder was one of my favorite singers/bands growing up and he greatly influenced my tastes in music His songs were almost Punk before it ever existed. I feel incredibly lucky just to be a small part of his new album and I love it that he’s still doing this stuff to this day. He’s even older than me and still at it. Hope it lasts forever!” - Walter Lure (Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers)
“I felt absolutely chuffed to be asked to play on Mitch Ryders’ cover of ‘Have Love Will Travel.’ Upon listening to his awesome vocals, I was truly inspired to get my amp up to Warp 16 and let ‘er rip—so much FUN. Thanks for having me on board, Mitch!” - Paul Rudolph (The Pink Fairies/Hawkwind)

Singer, Songwriter & Multi-instrumentalist Eliot Lewis is a key member of the the Daryl Hall & John Oates band and one of the original featured musicians on MTV's “Live From Daryl's House”
Eliot Lewis is a singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist as well as being a key member of the the Daryl Hall & John Oates band. Eliot is also one of the original featured musicians on MTV's “Live From Daryl's House.” His contributions stand out on some of the best moments from the show including performances with Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Joe Walsh, Todd Rundgren,Train, Grace Potter, Ben Folds, Booker T, Jewel, Rob Thomas, Keb Mo, Jason Mraz, Darius Rucker, Gavin DeGraw and many, many others. Earlier in his career Eliot spent several years as a key member of the The Average White Band. Eliot toured, wrote and also produced several songs for the Scottish soul band.
“Eliot is a musician who can do it all, great singer, songwriter and guitarist. He rocks and he's got soul. No one does it quite like him” - Daryl Hall
In 2016 Eliot signed an exclusive recording partnership with The SoNo Recording Group. His first release, entitled “Adventure,” is a collection of eleven new recordings; ten originals written, performed, and produced by Eliot and one cover of the Bad Company classic, “Ready For Love.”
Says Eliot, “My goal with this record is to try to present a record that comes from the place that first inspired me, the kind of classic stripped down rock & soul before all the slick production with auto tuning became so common place”
“Adventure” was released on CD, digital download, and streaming on October 28th world-wide vis SRG Records / The ILS Group / Universal Music Group.
Having mastered four instruments over the course of his career; guitar, keyboard, bass and drums, Eliot Lewis blazed his own trail as a solo artist sharing his distinctive brand of rock & soul through solo releases and hundreds of solo tour dates all over the world. Eliot's songs come from the inside out. “I think the main inspiration for any of my records is to convey these little slices of life, most of my songs are written about my own experiences and situations”.
There are many who shaped Eliot's music and writing. “As a guitar player, definitely Jeff Beck who I've been listening to all my life, as well as Billy Gibbons who I had the great fortune of working with recently, and Peter Frampton who I actually jammed with when I was 14 yrs old. I had the amazing experience of meeting and seeing many influential artists when I was a kid mainly at Madison Square Garden in New York City. A place I just played with Hall & Oates which was a lifetime dream. One of the first writers to inspire me to write songs was Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, another favorite band of mine that I just worked with on Live From Daryl's House.”
Along with recording a select set of episodes for “Live From Daryl's House,” Eliot is currently working on his next album slated for release the first half of 2019, along with a tour. “An Evening with Multi Instrumentalist Eliot Lewis” consists of very unique performances where he plays all instruments on stage!
In closing Eliot has this to impart, “Life is an Adventure, I want to share mine with you on tour soon because, we're in it together.”

San Francisco, CA – Cornell “CC” Carter has been gracing stages and entertaining thousands of fans with his signature sound around the world for many years. He is known for his phenomenal stage presence, his high-powered audience engagement, and his extraordinary and dynamic vocal skills. CC is now set to unleash his highly anticipated new album titled ONE LOVE. The CD will release worldwide on August 3, 2018, two weeks ahead of the digital release on August 17, 2018.
The first Single from the album, “That Feelin’,” was released on April 27, 2018 and has been #1 on all significant Soul Charts in the UK. CC achieved what has been called the elusive “Hat Trick” (#1 on All 3 Soul Charts at the same time) which no other artist has ever accomplished! ONE LOVE has a variety of outstanding Producers on its roster such as Morgan Howell (Soulpersona, UK), Brian Braziel, David Council, and Kirk Crumpler. Cornell says, “ONE LOVE is a message of Oneness with the planet and each other and allowing Love and Music to be our guide to a better world!”
Cornell’s strong love for music developed when he was a young man growing up in a San Francisco home chock full of Jazz, Blues, Funk, Soul, and Gospel, which has been the inspiration for his creativity and songwriting. He co-wrote and produced his internationally acclaimed 2016 album In The Moment with co-producer Kirk “KC” Crumpler, who has produced various award-winning artists. A collection of 13 diverse tracks spanning R&B, Funk, and heart-piercing Soul numbers, In The Moment is a mix of the past and present, featuring solid classics and contemporary chart-toppers. CC performed all lead and background vocals on the entire album and was also instrumental in the music’s production.
Following the release of In The Moment, Cornell was able to collaborate with other producers (DJ Spen, Boogie Back) and put out several highly acclaimed remixes which have received great reviews in the US and Europe. On May 19, 2017, Cornell released Vindicated Soul, a remarkable collection of soulful covers of artists including Marvin Gaye, Al Green, and Willie Hutch. Vindicated Soul also includes a remix of the classic CC original track “Where Do We Go.” (www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NNT7rrkE-k)
CC has had many once in a lifetime musical experiences to draw from, but two of the highest points of his career so far has been sharing the stage as an opening act for the late great Godfather of Soul, James Brown, and the legendary Ray Charles. In addition to his various headline performances, he has also opened for other household name brand artists such as The Whispers, The Temptations, Natalie Cole, and Kool and The Gang. As part of Narada Michael Walden’s all-star band, which performs at various NMW Foundation events, he has shared the stage with other renowned world-class artists such as Neil Schon (Journey), Dionne Warwick, Ronnie Spector, and many other legendary performers!
Throughout the years, CC has appeared on many albums, and he continues to be one of the most in-demand session vocalists in the San Francisco Bay Area. He was honored to perform with world-renowned, multi-platinum guitarist Carlos Santana, providing vocals on two tracks that appeared on Santana IV and on Santana’s latest album with the legendary Ron Isley. His experience and professionalism have made him an A-list vocalist for Tarpan Studios, appearing on many tracks with Grammy and Emmy Award winning producer Narada Michael Walden. He also contributed vocals on various Tarpan artist releases, including Jennifer Saran’s new albums Merry Christmas, You Are Loved and Walk With Me, and many others.
CC loves to share his talents with aspiring artists and veteran performers alike. He established CDC Productions, his own production and record company geared toward assisting these artists to follow their dreams while also teaching them about the time and dedication it takes to reach their goals. Cornell has been involved with many charities and non-profits over the past few years, and his vision is to continue to uplift and engage people all around the world with Music and with One Love.

Los Angeles, CA - You may not know his name, but you most certainly know his songs. As one third of Holland/Dozier/Holland, perhaps the greatest songwriting trio of all time, Lamont Dozier is responsible for such timeless classics as “Stop In The Name Of Love,” “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You),” “Nowhere To Run,” “You Keep Me Hanging On,” just to name a few! These megahits changed the face of music forever, jumpstarting the careers of The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Martha & The Vandellas, The Isley Brothers and many more figures who defined the Motown Era of pop music.
Now, Lamont Dozier has gifted the world with a brand new project that reimagines these treasured classics using acoustic guitar, resonating piano and sparse arrangements, brought together by producer Fred Mollin to create a moving experience for audiences of every generation. Reimagination packs an enormous emotional wallop as Dozier, now several decades older and more mature as an artist, revisits his masterpieces with both reverence and affection. These new semi-unplugged arrangements bring out new depths of feeling and tenderness that audiences will immediately identify with and serve as a reminder of Dozier’s unparalleled talent as a songwriter. Indeed, one need look no further for proof of the universality of Dozier’s genius than the stellar guest artists who have lined up to lend their own unique voices to this project from Grammy-award winning singer Gregory Porter to rock icon Todd Rundgren, and from British pop idol Sir Cliff Richard to country superstar Le Ann Womack.
Producer Mollin summarizes the sentiments of many involved with the project, stating “I will never produce a more historic project, and I know how deep the music will resonate. Lamont and his music were critically important to the rise and continued success of Motown. It is a known fact that Motown changed the world along with the Beatles.”
Classic rock legend Graham Nash, of Crosby, Stills & Nash, offers this about the project, “When Fred Mollin asked me if I was interested in singing harmony on Lamont’s album, I just couldn’t wait. My former band, The Hollies, recorded ‘Stop In The Name Of Love’ in the early ‘80s and it was my absolute pleasure to be able to work with such an incredible writer. Well done, Lamont!”
And finally, Dozier himself is clearly struck by the significance of these recordings and how fans will react, saying “Who knew that after all these years that these songs would be revisited again in this form? We’re just having a ball with it and, we think that the audience and the fans of this music will get a kick out of it as well.”

I have one word for the concert I saw last night, FANTASTIC!
Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes worked up the capacity crowd at the
Colonial Theater in the Berkshires to a dancing frenzy. Part of my process of
observation is watching the reaction of the crowd or certain interesting
individuals at concerts. In this case, entire sections of people were standing
up and dancing last night. I have been to many concerts at this gorgeous venue
and have never witnessed that. It was a lot of fun.
I remember this band from back in the 70s and I know they
never made it big like the acts they influenced, namely Bruce Springsteen and
Bon Jovi. They decided to stick to their guns and not cooperate with record
labels and slick executives in suits. Just before the end of the show I stepped
out to the merch table to buy their new release on vinyl, which is their first
recording in 5 years. I spoke to the gent behind the table who happened to be
Johnny’s life time friend. He told me Johnny never wanted to sell out and
please the labels so they carried on and made the music they loved. So here we
are still listening to his music and enjoying their shows.
The show started right on time and they played for a solid
2.5 hours and a lot of time segued right into the next song. The energy Johnny
has is amazing for someone nearly 70 years old. He is an inspiration and a joy
to watch. Usually when the music comes on the sound system the concert is over,
well this was a false alarm. I think Johnny was inspired by the love and energy
he was getting in return from the audience as he played another 4 songs for an
encore!
The music of Southside Johnny and his Asbury Jukes is a
combination of rock, blues and soul. His vocal style is perfect for the music.
He has a rough whiskey edge the puts a certain emphasis on the words for each
song.
A bonus to the band’s full sound is the amazing horn
section. There is trumpet, trombone and saxophone. All three get a chance to
strut their stuff separately at the front of the stage and together as well.
Johnny would step to either side of the stage and grab a mic to finish out a
song and let his boys cut lose.
Special nods go to the guitar player Glenn Alexander and the
keyboard man Jeff Kazee, who has an amazing voice. When he would sing solo or
with Johnny it was a treat for everyone’s ears. The band also did a really good
job with some cover tunes like the Stone’s “Time Waits For No One.” This the
true test of a great band. To take another band’s classic songs and make it their
own while it remains very recognizable to your audience, that is something
special. That is real talent and resilient musicianship. Speaking of
musicianship, Johnny can play that harmonica! At times, it sounded like a
locomotive flying down the tracks. He was just so focused and in a groove. The
man has the blues in his soul and that is a fact!
I must not forget all the entertainment value that was on
display. Johnny can tell a story and he is very humorous. Keeping it light is
right in line with all the upbeat and energetic music they present. All around
it was a great night for everyone. For me, The Colonial is my destination to go
hear all the great bands I know and remember. They have consistently presented
great shows ever since the venue reopened after the renovation. I do not see
any end to that thank the Lord!
