Audio Fidelity To Release Tangerine Dream “Thief” Original Motion Picture Soundtrack On 180g Vinyl

“An impressive soundtrack...a signature film score and certainly one of the best electronic scores of the 80's.”

Camarillo, CA – Marshall Blonstein's Audio Fidelity will be releasing Tangerine Dream's Theif OST on 180g vinyl in November 2015. Tangerine Dream is among the most successful electronic groups of all time. The band was chosen by Michael Mann to write and produce the original score for Thief, his 1981 directorial debut. Tangerine Dream added their patented pulses, blips and whooshes to the film's highly stylized visual scenes. Up to this time, no one had ever used a sequencer for a neo-noir film...this score is one of the most unusual of its kind for American cinema.

Rather than a full orchestral score, Tangerine Dream's techno-based score uses synthesizer, percussion and electric guitar making for a fascinating and exciting soundtrack. Tracks like “Dr. Destructo” have a fast-paced percussion tempo. An engaging melody on “Beach Theme” makes it one of the album's most familiar and popular tracks, while “Trap Feeling” has a delicacy that compares favorably to Brian Eno's Music for Films.

There were two versions of the album only the US release included “Confrontation” an actual rock song of guitars, bass and drums written by Craig Safan. Band member, Edgar Froese stated at the time,”It was a pleasure working on the film because the exotic and shifting moods of Thief were perfectly suited to the kind of music we played...and yet we knew the music would also stand on its own.”

The soundtrack and the movie are inseparable. The music and movie have grown beyond cult classic status becoming an important part of the collected works of Tangerine Dream and Mann.

Tracks:
SIDE ONE
1. Beach Theme
2. Dr. Destructo
3. Diamond Diary
4. Burning Bar

SIDE TWO
1. Scrap Yard
2. Trap Feeling
3. Igneous
4. Confrontation

Personnel
Edgar Froese– keyboards, electronic equipment, guitar
Christopher Franke– synthesizers, electronic equipment, electronic percussion
Johannes Schmoelling– keyboards, electronic equipment
Craig Safan– composed and performed “Confrontation”

Music Legends Magma To Release Iconic 1975 Live Album “Magma Live Hhaï” on Limited Edition Vinyl!

Paris, France - Completing the series of vinyl reissues, French music legends Magma will be issuing their iconic 1975 live album Magma Live Hhaï on limited edition vinyl. This double LP will be released by Jazz Village Records on October 2, 2015.

Magma has joined up with Jazz Village to celebrate its 45th anniversary with an impressive series of new and classic releases. A series of new and classic Magma titles has been scheduled for release every month from September 2014 to November 2015. A legendary French group if ever there was one, Magma has continued to influence the course of contemporary music since their debut in 1969.

After the departure in autumn of 1974 of Jannick TOP and most of the other members of the band, MAGMA rose phoenix-like from the ashes with a new, hot, line-up which saw the musical opportunity lying before it. After long rehearsals Christian VANDER realized that he had yet another exceptional groupand the decision was taken to record the first MAGMA live album. The recording, made in June 1975 at the Taverne de l'Olympia, perfectly demonstrates the incredible impact made by MAGMA. Absolutely dedicated to the music of Christian VANDER, who by that time had reached the summit of his art, the band plays as if it were one man and sweeps all before it in its triumphant passage. Whether it was a new arrangement of any of the old pieces (KOHNTARK, KOBAIA, MEKANIK) or a previously-unheard piece (HHAI, LIHNS), the sound of MAGMA has never been heard more powerfully as on this incredible recording. Although it remains difficult to point to any one performance as being outstanding, it would nevertheless be difficult not to react to the mind-blowing performance by Didier Lockwood, whose violin playing contributes so greatly to the profound originality of this magnificent double-album.

Christian VANDER drums, vocals - Klaus BLASQUIZ vocals - Stella VANDER vocals - Bernard PAGANOTTI bass - Gabriel FEDEROW guitar - Didier LOCKWOOD violin - Benoit WIDEMANN keyboards - Jean-Pol ASSELINE keyboards

ZUND 1:
1 - KOHNTARK part 1
2 - KOHNTARK part 2

ZUND 2:
1 - HHAI

Two Chrome/Damon Edge Rarities Get Reissued On Special Limited Edition Vinyl!

Los Angeles, CA - August 11 marked the 20th anniversary of the death of pioneering musician/songwriter/painter/madman Damon Edge whose profoundly gifted talents and indomitable spirit inspired numerous bands and artists both in his hometown of San Francisco and all over the world. In 1975, Edge founded the legendary experimental noise rock outfit Chrome, partnering with guitarist and fellow maverick Helios Creed for a string of albums from 1977’s Alien Soundtracks to 1982’s 3rd From The Sun that today stand as monuments of defiantly creative and uncompromising underground music. Chrome was, for the most part, a studio project that found Edge & Creed toiling away endlessly, experimenting with new recording techniques and sound designs. Live shows were extremely rare. In fact, the duo made a grand total of two public performances in its lifetime, which is why a bootleg recording of the group’s 1981 live debut at a music festival in Bologna, Italy became a much sought after treasure. Dubbed Chromosome Damage, this special release will be reissued on August 21 by Cleopatra Records. The reissue features new album artwork and remastered audio pressed onto gorgeous clear vinyl, plus a printed inner sleeve with detailed liner notes written by Chrome historian Neil Martinson.

Also available on August 21 is a limited edition vinyl pressing of Damon Edge’s 1985 debut solo album Alliance. With the end of his partnership with Creed, Edge began to delve into the cold sterility of new wave, taking the metallic rhythms and chilly synth lines to new frontiers. Though Edge’s initial solo work was viewed as a step toward the mainstream, in reality he was as dark and subversive as ever, and Alliance shows an artist stretching to redefine himself without losing sight of his own uniqueness, a feat that Edge pulls off here with aplomb. Alliance will be issued in two limited pressings--a clear vinyl pressing, and a crimson vinyl pressing--both limited to just 500 copies each. Inside, a printed inner sleeve features liner notes by Martinson as well as a reproduction of the original release’s insert. It also includes a rare non-album track that has not been available on vinyl since it appeared as the B-side on the “I’m A Gentleman” 7” single. Both of these releases are fitting tributes to one of the most revolutionary figures in modern music and the patron saint of avant-garde artists everywhere, Damon Edge!

NEW RELEASE...Maria Muldaur's Acclaimed Debut Album on 200g Vinyl

One of those classic debut albums every singer wants...an absolutely wonderful record from beginning to end...includes the hit "Midnight at the Oasis"

Hollywood, CA - Exhibit Records will release Maria Muldaur's critically acclaimed first solo recording on 200g vinyl. Muldaur's compelling debut features savvy studio vets, talented guests, strong tunes and Muldaur's best-known single "Midnight at the Oasis," a flirty invitation to forbidden pleasure, set in an Arabian Nights desert that falls somewhere between jazz and pop. A well-known music critic declared that "Midnight at the Oasis was probably responsible for the conception of more children than any other song of the 1970's."

The recording appeared in 1973, during a moment of great openness in popular music. Her album became an FM staple, she found just the right balance between her commitment to the traditional material she favors and her ability to interpret it in her own quirky and original recognizable singing style. There's not a weak song, a weak arrangement, or a weak performance anywhere on it. This album has elements of rock, pop, blues, folk, country, bluegrass and even vaudeville and somehow, all the disparate elements blend well to make for a cohesive, remarkably unified album impossible to classify as a whole.

Among the musicians and vocalists appearing on the recordings are Dr. John, Ry Cooder, Andrew Gold, David Grisman, Chris Ethridge, Ray Brown, Richard Greene, Dave Holland, David Lindley, Bettye LaVette, Bill Keith of Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys, solo-Beatles drummer Jim Keltner, solo-Beatles bassist Klaus Voorman, and jazz-guitarist Amos Garrett. But the album's greatest moments belong to Maria alone - her vocal gifts defy expression. After a decade of work this debut recording revealed her art as mature, sophisticated, sensual and wise. The songs and performances are sweet, poignant, salacious, intelligent and attractive. The high point may well be Wendy Waldman's "Mad Mad Me," which closes the album with the most hauntingly gorgeous two minutes and fifty-three seconds ever recorded.

The new 200 gram vinyl record is beautifully presented in a sturdy old style tip-on gatefold jacket featuring the original album art work. The popular recording joins an expanding list of high quality vinyl releases being made available from the emergent Exhibit Records. The Hollywood company has rapidly curated an eclectic catalog of classic recordings and is gaining notice for their exquisite mastering, high quality pressings and detail to the fine art of exceptional package design.

Maria Muldaur is simply one of the great singers of all times. She could sing anything and make you love it. For those with eclectic tastes, this is a masterpiece. At the time of its original release Rolling Stone magazine called the record "One of the half-dozen best albums of 1973." What Maria Muldaur did back then and is still doing, is recording excellent and eclectic albums, covering different music genres and displaying formidable musical knowledge - there's a huge love for music in this supremely talented artist.

NEW RELEASE… Johnny Cash, "Orange Blossom Special" Limited Edition LP Distinctive Numbered 'Box Car Series' on 200g Vinyl

“Johnny Cash transcends country music...he represents what American Music is all about!”

Hollywood, CA - Exhibit Records announces the release of a special Numbered Limited Edition album of the Johnny Cash 1964 classic, Orange Blossom Special. The 200 gram vinyl record has been remastered from the original master tapes and is handsomely presented in a sturdy old style gatefold jacket featuring the authentic album cover art, liner notes, historical recording session information and new archived photos of Johnny Cash taken in the Columbia Records Nashville studio during the recording session.

The 'Box Car Series' is so called because the back of each album of this limited edition pressing contains a tiny replica of the actual Orange Blossom Special box car that partly appears on the album cover. Each box car has been strategically foil-stamped with a unique Limited Edition number.

Johnny Cash was known throughout the world as one of the major figures of post-Hank Williams country music, he constantly sought to expand his musical horizons and avoid being pigeonholed. Cash was at his most engagingly eclectic on this early ‘60s recording of Orange Blossom Special. To begin with, "The Man In Black" covered three tunes by Bob Dylan, then the most talked-about young singer-songwriter of the dawning folk-rock era. ("It Ain't Me Babe," "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright," and "Mama, You've Been On My Mind"), Nashville's essentially conservative musical establishment hardly embraced Dylan's mind-blowing lyrics, but Cash, knowing genius when he heard it, was the first major country star to cover Dylan's work. By the same token, he also included two numbers by A.P. Carter of the legendary Carter Family, who, along with Jimmy Rodgers, created the musical template that's still the model for "traditional" country, bluegrass, and some forms of folk. And Cash's unmistakable, tough-hewn baritone rendered the classic fiddle tune that is the title track, and Harland Howard’s,"The Wall," one of the prison songs for which he is known, "Danny Boy" (with a spoken word intro), the spiritual "Amen" and the time-honored story-song "The Long Black Veil." Cash's songwriting contributions include “You Wild Colorado” and the ever-relevant protest tune "All Of God's Children Ain't Free."

Orange Blossom Special finds Cash backed by the Tennessee Two, his outstanding guitar/bass tandem of Luther Perkins and Marshall Grant. And there are guest appearances by such distinguished Nashville names as tenor saxophonist Boots Randolph, pianists Floyd Cramer and Bill Pursell, guitarist Norman Blake, and harmonica ace Charlie McCoy. And June Carter joined Johnny on "It Ain’t Me Babe" for the first of many classic duet recordings they would make together over the years.

The Orange Blossom Special album by Johnny Cash is one more example of the fine music being produced by the budding Hollywood record company, Exhibit Records. The young music label has curated an eclectic catalog of classic recordings in a short time and continues to gain high praise and recognition for their exquisite mastering, high quality pressings and attention to details as displayed in the fine art and craftsmanship of their exceptional package design.

Unreleased Live Album By Jazz Drum Legend Buddy Rich “Birdland” As Seen In Award Winning Film “Whiplash” To Be Released May 26, 2015!

Studio City, CA - Lightyear Entertainment and Lobitos Creek Ranch, in association with Scabeba Entertainment and the Buddy Rich Estate, have announced the release of a new live album featuring Buddy Rich and his Killer Force Band at the peak of their performing years.

This rare, previously unreleased, and all original production was recorded with Buddy’s permission by bandmate Alan Gauvin, who has also now mixed and edited the project together. The album was mastered by Tom Swift, and will be released May 26 through Caroline Distribution, the independent distribution arm of Universal Music Group, on the Lightyear/Lobitos Creek label.

The Birdland album is seen in the Academy Award winning film Whiplash, in the hands of the young star Miles Teller, who plays an extraordinary drummer who idolizes Buddy Rich.

The digital version of Birdland was rush released worldwide on February 24 to coincide with the Oscars airing and is already the most downloaded Buddy Rich album in recent history after just a few weeks.

A vinyl LP of Birdland is scheduled for a June 23rd release.

Lightyear, Lobitos Creek, and Scabeba have previously teamed to release two successful DVDs, The Lost Tapes and The Channel One Suite, and two previous live CDs featuring Buddy and his band: Time Out and No Funny Hats. In addition, in 2014, Lightyear/Lobitos released The Solos, which was comprised purely of Buddy Rich drum solos, and culled from his performances in 1976 and 1977, at the peak of his power and versatility. The album showcases 9 of his premiere solo performances, recorded while on worldwide tour with his band. All of the DVDs and CDs are available through Caroline/UMG.

Birdland is probably the best Buddy Rich album we’ve released,” said Arnie Holland, CEO of Lightyear. “And we are grateful to Whiplash for stimulating so much interest in Buddy and big-band jazz drumming in general.”

Cathy Rich, CEO of Scabeba Entertainment and Buddy’s daughter, who authorized the release, was a consultant on the Whiplash film. She is currently on tour with her Buddy Rich Band.

Distribution of the CD and Vinyl of Birdland in the UK and Europe will be through Wienerworld Ltd. www.wienerworld.com

Eclectic Pop Music Artist Anthony W. Rogers Releases 'Smile-Era' Influenced Sophomore Album On Limited 180 Gram Vinyl

Cumberland, MD - Musician/multi-instrumentalist Anthony W. Rogers announces the release of his second solo album entitled WRONG. The new ten song collection of originals was performed and recorded entirely solo and is now available on limited 180 gram vinyl and download formats.

A stylistically diverse and decidedly homemade effort, Rogers recorded WRONG alone at his home in rural West Virginia from 2011-2014 through a multi-track recording layering all the instrumental parts and vocals.

Says Rogers, “It's a process I'm used to from the old days and it fits the schedule of my life. On this recording, the cheap equipment I used and the way I used it, is really primitive by 2014 standards. I enjoy it that way. I get a certain perverse kick out of achieving sounds and sonics cheaply.”

Anthony Rogers is a long retired veteran of the local tri-state music scene in many rock and jazz bands in his youth. Rogers continued to blaze his trail through the Washington DC area writing recording and performing original music with local favorites The Now and Ten Below-a band which originated in Frostburg. Besides playing on several recordings while in DC, Tony also performed as drummer on several occasions behind legendary DC vocalist and Grammy winner Eva Cassidy and in several other jazz combos.

WRONG was prepared for release with Chris Biondo (Cassidy's musical collaborator) at his facility in Kensington Md. Rogers also recorded with Biondo as engineer on Rogers' 1994 solo debut 'Identifiction'.

Tony relates that, “I did most all of the mixes at home except for 'Keep Holdin On’'which we re-did at Chris'. On the way in, I walked past his multiple Emmy awards he won for his TV music (Nat Geo, TLC, etc). He has the best ears and intuition of anyone I've been lucky enough to be around. He knows what I'm going for. I trust him and his opinion completely.”

Although there are no plans presently to return to live performance at this time, this album signals a return to recording activity. “I'm better off to use what very little time I have recording creating and writing. I have a full life outside of this.  It takes a lot of sustained focus,” says Tony.

Those lucky enough to hear the dizzying and stylistic effort seem to favor the harmony laden wistful look-back track, “White Beach” (about Rogers' home town); the closer - “Johnny/Janie” a 1950's influenced let's runaway theme sung masterfully by his then nine year old children Audrey and Joe Rogers (“People really seem to like this one. It’s easy to understand”); to the more adult themed guitar feedback drenched tribute to his tragically deceased childhood friend Mitch Sanders, “Crunch” (“It's kind of a twisted blues song for a twisted situation”); and finally, the centerpiece mystical acoustic quasi-prog penultimate track…”Wash” (“the main lyrical gist of the whole record, really”).

As to the influence of Smile, Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, Tony says that "there is no question that the vocal arrangements that Brian did in his heyday are so firmly imprinted on my mind from my youth, it is an integral part of me and my own sound. I bought all the Beach Boys bootlegs, tape trading, past masters stuff since the 70s-Smile is a pillar of modern musical achievement. Brian would be prominent on MY own personal musical Mount Rushmore."

Says Rogers, “This was designed to be an LP. A two-sided, two-part, two-gals record album. The vinyl package is beautiful. This was made for vinyl people. Top notch 180 gram heavy vinyl, great color artwork, inner sleeve, and lyric insert. The idea is to get out your headphones, play side one, then take a break and then do side two. Like two separate EPs. No CDs this time (like 'Identifiction'). With downloads, Ipods, phones, even CDRs, you can make your own.”

WRONG is certainly one of a kind… and you can get copy in most cool independent stores in the mid Atlantic/Pennsylvania area and the great Solar Mountain Records in Keyser,WV.
WRONG  is also available through the standard download sources (iTunes, CDBaby, Amazon). WRONG is the first release on the Wildflow Unlimited record label which seeks to feature and promote artists on vinyl.

Drum Legend Billy Cobham To Release Two Live Albums From 1992 Tokyo Concert

Los Angeles, CA – Much to the excitement of drummers and jazz aficionados worldwide, drum legend Billy Cobham will be releasing two live albums on Cleopatra Records. The first is 'Mirror's Image' on February 17 (CD & VINYL), follwed by 'Reflected Journey' on April 28 (CD). The albums are 2 parts of the same show recorded in Tokyo on February 15, 1992

What an amazing career Billy Cobham has had. From his auspicious start in the late '60s touring and recording with the great Miles Davis to his groundbreaking work with John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra in the early '70s, Cobham built a reputation for complex and soulful drumming. But it wasn't until 1973 and the release of his first solo album 'Spectrum' that he took the title of jazz fusion's preeminent drummer with a style and technique all his own, one that has been a major influence on drummers worldwide ever since.

A stream of further albums would follow, both under his own name and in partnership with a host of allies. And each one pushed towards fresh frontiers as Cobham marched on through the 1970s and 1980s. He played with Jack Bruce, Mark-Almond, a revived Mahavishnu, Bob Weir and the Grateful Dead, and was even behind a Dead tribute band, Jazz is Dead, realigning the sound of the Dead for a whole new audience. Cobham's own band, Glass Menagerie, cut two truly luminous albums, and as a new decade, the 1990s, dawned, the drummer was as busy as he had ever been.

In 1992, working under the auspices of UNICEF, Cobham set out for Brazil, where he would be working with autistic outpatients and street children in Santos, a suburb of Sao Paulo. “The street children fell into my realm of operations almost by chance, as it was not part of my original mandate,” he explained. “But due to the unavoidable specter and shadow cast by so many little personalities with big hearts and so much time to ponder life without parental direction, it was inevitable that I would find myself working with them… some of the brightest minds harboring raw talent that I have ever witnessed to date. The shame of it all was that many would never have the opportunity to use their gift.”

A new project came into being, a band in which the voices and talents of the street children would be harnessed alongside the talents of Cobham's latest combo, the visionary trio that he put together with the then all-but unknown Ira Coleman on double bass; and Australian Joe Chindamo on piano. This was the grouping captured together on 1993's so-acclaimed 'Traveler' album. But another song informed by the Brazilian sojourn, “Street Urchin,” found its way onto 1992's 'By Design', and it was with that album fresh on the shelves that the trio set out on tour.

February 1992 saw Cobham, Coleman and Chindamo arrive in Japan, and it was there, in Tokyo on February 15, that they performed the breathtaking show from which these two albums have been drawn. Japanese audiences, says Cobham, are among his favorite in the world, and the feeling was clearly mutual. The audience's enthusiasm never lapses, and he rewarded them with a selection of songs that traveled back across his entire career - “Crescent Sun,” reaching all the way back to 1974's sophomore effort, 'Total Eclipse'; “Shabazz,” from the 1975 album of the same name.

The evening also looked towards the future - “Reflected Journey,” a magnificent piece that would later title one of Chindamo’s own solo albums; “Prime Time,” “Key Jane”…. And all of them reworked and rearranged for the demands of the night, and the skills of the three piece. On record, Cobham habitually introduced fresh players, fresh instrumentation, and allowed their interpretations to flavor the individual compositions. In concert, whole new rearrangements were called for, and it was a mark of the talents with which he surrounded himself that every fresh revision felt somehow definitive; every one opened new doors through which the improvisations could stroll. Tonight in Tokyo, those doors were open as wide as they have ever been.

Cobham remembers the night, hot and tight before one of his favorite audiences in the world. His latest album, 'By Design', was still fresh on the shelves and of course it would dominate the show, the epic “Mirror's Image,” the raucous “Street Urchin” and the playful “Kinky Dee” taking off from the CD for fresh destinations unknown. On record, Ernie Watts' sax was an integral part of the show; on stage, the trio moved in fresh directions and the music soared accordingly.

NEW RELEASE! Trini Lopez, “At PJ's” Special 50th Anniversary Numbered Limited Edition on 200g Vinyl

"...raw, energetic, live music - this is Trini at his absolute best…Wonderful songs, brilliantly performed that STAND THE TEST OF TIME...”

Hollywood, CA - Exhibit Records announces the release of a Special 50th Anniversary Numbered Limited Edition album of Trini Lopez, "At PJ’s." The 200 gram vinyl record is beautifully presented in a sturdy old style gatefold jacket featuring the original album art work and for the first time includes the lyrics to all the tunes. The back of each album is foil-stamped with its unique number.

With the release of this album in April 1963 Trini Lopez became one of the biggest singing stars of the Folk Revival. Trini Lopez, "At PJ's" made it to #2 on the Billboard charts and stayed in the Top 40 for over a year. The album included the chart-topping "If I Had a Hammer" which reached number one in 36 countries and was a radio favorite for many years. The hit single sold more than 4 million copies and the album sold over a million and was awarded a gold record.

This was the album that made Lopez an instant success and the live party-a-go-go atmosphere of the record did much to put Trini's likable energy over the top. What Lopez did, at the head of a trio was to make folk-pop swing. Other songs include "This Land Is Your Land," and "Gotta Travel On." It could be surmised that by treating such material in this fashion, Lopez had a tiny influence upon the subsequent folk-rock movement...though, Lopez was more the all-around entertainer with a Latin lilt than he was a pure folk singer, so you also get "America" (from West Side Story), "La Bamba," Ray Charles' "What'd I Say," "Volare," and "When the Saints Go Marching In."

The emergent Exhibit Records has rapidly curated an eclectic catalog of classic recordings and gaining notice for exquisite mastering, high quality pressings and detail to the fine art of exceptional package design.

Heavy Metal Review: Judas Priest-Redeemer of Souls

Release Date: July 8, 2014
Label: Epic

It’s hard to imagine that 6 years has passed since Judas Priest released their double album Nostradamus. Some fans found that a tough one to swallow because they tried something different. I applauded it and thought it was a true masterpiece. Then K.K. Downing retired and we thought what now? Then another live album arrived titled A Touch of Evil a year later introducing their new guitarist Richie Faulkner. Again I thought this was another good move for the band to keep things rolling and Faulkner seemed to be a good fit. Once Faulkner got his chops down and did some touring with the band it was time to step back into the studio to see how that worked without Downing for the first time.

So now we have Redeemer of Souls which by all accounts is a return to form and I could not agree more. There are three editions of this release available, the regular one CD package, the deluxe two CD set and the double vinyl LP version. I decided, as I always do, to go for the gusto and get the deluxe CD version. I was glad I did as I found out the bonus CD is like an entirely different album, not some out takes or unreleased live material (like most bonus tracks are). I also received the LP version for review which was another added bonus that I welcomed.

The album art by Mark Wilkinson is eye catching and prolific and very “metal” so we are off to a good start. As the album begins then explodes with the onset of the opener “Dragonaut,” Halford belts out “Welcome to my world of steel, master of my domain, cower as the pain’s unsealed, disasters where I reign.” You get the idea; the heavy metal music that goes hand in hand with the lyrics is a guarantee. How else would we want it? This music is like a battering ram straight between the eyes, perfect!

How many metal albums have 5 tracks that nearly reach the 10 minute mark? You will be hearing one if you pick this up. The first CD is powerful set with some excellent musicianship and being a long time Priest fan and one of their biggest supporters I was not disappointed in one track. The title track is amazing, sweeping, energized heavy metal; it does not get any better than that track. “Halls of Valhalla” is another beast, an epic track with all the glory of a warrior’s promise to reach the place of their calling after doing what they were destined to do, die in battle. Halford remains a wonder at his age and his ability to sing a song just as he always did. Priest would be a shadow of itself without him at the helm and we all know that.

The interplay of Faulkner and Tipton is quite the pairing and every bit as satisfying as the previous lineup. You cannot deny how strong this release is. Let us not forget the rock solid bottom end of this lineup with Ian Hill (bass) and Scott Travis (drums). Perhaps one of the best examples of that powerful duo on display is the hammer of the gods coming down in “Sword of Damocles.” If you were wondering, that phrase is a figure featured in a single moral anecdote, an allusion to imminent and ever-present peril faced by those in positions of power.

“March of the Damned” continues along the same lines as the preceding tracks. Its thunderous bass lines and juggernaut drums followed by beefy hard rock guitars are well suited to the doom and gloom of the lyrical content. And so it goes throughout the first disc, like a steamroller on mission, wave after wave of heavy metal comes at you. It is classic Priest jugging along at their very best. The first CD is relentless in its power and scope. This is a showcase of a heavy metal band hitting its stride and shining at all positions. By now I am wondering when I will hear a weaker track or one that I can say I don’t really like but that time never arrives. “Cold Blooded” and “Metalizer” continue to hammer away at your consciousness shaking you down inside and out. If you turn up the stereo with this music you are subject to shaking walls and shattered ear drums so heed the warning my metal head friends…or just go ahead and crank it and enjoy, I did.

What may come as a big surprise to fans are the bluesy roots in “Crossfire.” It is Priest because you have Halford on the vocals but if you had a different vocalist you would not know it was the same band. I have to say I thought the change was welcome and I loved the song. Some of it has the patented heavy riffs entering the mix but this one is real different and it shows how talented and diverse these musicians can be. This band is certainly not one dimensional.

The bonus CD was intended to be enjoyed as an entirely different album and it sounds that way. This is more of the classic Priest during the earlier years such as British Steel. The energy and power does not subside a bit so don’t worry. What you get is another side of Priest but the volume does not get turned down one iota.

As I made my way through the second disc, I became even more exhilarated by what I was hearing. “Snakebite” is excellent with Halford spewing out the venom of the past, giving the new fans a taste of where this band came from so long ago. It’s only four tracks but they pack a powerful punch and it’s well worth the additional investment to add them to your collection.

I also listened to the 180 gram vinyl edition of the album (minus the bonus tracks) and it sounds fantastic. You won’t be missing anything here; there is no sacrifice for quality of sound. Judas Priest sounds good in any format however this type of music is well suited to vinyl and it always was.

This heavy metal carries on the tradition of Judas Priest and it will surely bring in more fans by the masses once they hear this music. It is one of their strongest efforts since the release of Screaming for Vengeance in 1982. If you love metal just make sure you get this!

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's Robert Levon Been Pays Tribute To Late Father's Legendary Band The Call!

Los Angeles, CA – Much to the excitement of music fans worldwide, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's Robert Levon Been pays tribute to his late father, Michael Been, with an unforgettable live performance fronting his father's legendary band The Call in the upcoming live DVD / CD 'The Call Live Tribute With Robert Levon Been' (available September 2nd, 2014 via Label Records/Lightyear/Caroline).

"It's difficult to sum up what this show meant to me, but it was also just such a natural primal reaction to wanting to share the music and the joy we felt playing these songs together with more than just the 4 of us. The very first time i played with Scott, Dickie, and Jim in rehearsal together there was such an overwhelming love for the songs and the spirit that it couldn't just end there. We had to take it as far as we could go, to create an echo that would carry us all.' - Robert Levon Been

“What a joy it has been to reconnect with the band and the fans. I don't know how Robert pulled this off, but there were times during the show that I was not sure what year it was” – Jim Goodwin

Check out the premiere of the video for “I Still Believe”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzlNMBFEakg

While The Call (Michael Been, Tom Ferrier, Jim Goodwin and Scott Musick) got their official start in Santa Cruz, CA in 1979, its roots as a band go back to Michael Been's childhood in Oklahoma City, where seeing Elvis Presley perform on television changed the course of his life. That early interest in musical performance inspired his career, from the very beginning performing at the age of seven on local radio and television programs, to his eventual move to Chicago at the age of 16, where he was drawn into the blues scene by Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Junior Parker. Been eventually made his way to California, where he connected with drummer Scott Musick, as well as Tom Ferrier (guitar, vocals) and Jim Goodwin (keyboards, vocals) to form The Call.

Despite having their initial demos rejected by all the major labels, the band found themselves in demand by nearly every major producer in America. The Call's debut album was ultimately produced by Hugh Padgham (David Bowie, The Police) and the band were suddenly opening acts for major artists including Peter Gabriel and Simple Minds.

The Call were signed to Mercury, Elektra and MCA, and released seven critically acclaimed albums over the next eight years, featuring several iconic hit songs including “Let The Day Begin” and “I Still Believe (Great Design).” In 1997, after a seven year break, the band reformed to release the album Heaven & Back, before disbanding once more. Michael Been began serving as sound engineer for his son Robert Levon Been's band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, but passed away from a heart attack while working backstage at the 2010 Pukkelpop festival in Belgium.

Now after twenty years, The Call reunited at legendary Los Angeles venue The Troubador and gave an incredible live performance with Robert Levon Been stepping into his father's role and joining Musick, Ferrier and Goodwin for the one-of-a-kind event. For Robert - who grew up going out on the road with The Call anytime he had a break from school - the performance offered the chance to honor his musical legacy and perform nearly a dozen and a half songs from the band’s esteemed catalog. And for original members Musick, Ferrier and Goodwin, the show allowed them the opportunity to honor their friend and their own musical legacy while revisiting a bond they thought was gone forever.

“The Call was always about a deep spiritual connection and an examination of life from an intense personal perspective. Now, we have the son doing a tribute to his father that has taken it to a new level...a truly joyous noise after a 25 year silence.” - Jim Goodwin

'The Call Live Tribute With Robert Levon Been' will be available as a DVD+CD Deluxe Set on September 2nd 2014 and will also be available on CD, 180 gram double vinyl, and digitally (with 5 extra bonus tracks).

Disney’s TRON Original Motion Picture Soundtrack By Wendy Carlos To Be Released On Limited Edition 180g Translucent Blue Vinyl Double-LP

Double LP on two 180g translucent blue vinyl records!

Camarillo, CA - Marshall Blonstein's Audio Fidelity is proud to announce the release of Disney’s TRON Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. The 1982 film score was composed, performed and produced by the pioneer electronic musician, Wendy Carlos.

The Audio Fidelity release will contain two 180g translucent blue vinyl records packaged in a distinctive gatefold jacket. Gatefold package includes photos from the film and extensive liner notes written by Wendy Carlos. There are additional liner notes written by music maven Michael Fremer. The album was mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio.

Disney's 1982 video game crossover movie TRON was a notable landmark in the synthesis of electronic and traditional orchestral music. Carlos created a brilliant orchestral recording with symphonic backgrounds by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the UCLA Chorus which was later enhanced and upgraded with an electronic score. The result is an impressive soundscape that successfully and seamlessly fuses organic and electronic music.

The multi-Grammy award winning Wendy Carlos best-known for her popular “Switched on Bach,” series of albums also composed and performed on the soundtracks of two Stanley Kubrick cinema masterpieces, “A Clockwork Orange” and “The Shining.”

The TRON album includes two additional tracks (“Only Solutions” and the rock guitar-driven instrumental, “1990's Theme”) provided by Journey, one of America's best selling and most beloved bands.
