Classic Rock Premiere Johnny Wore Black's 'Comfy Slippers'

The musical musings Johnny Wore Black an artist who uses words to draw listeners in to his unusual tales to create a powerful and cinematic sound.  No surprise as you might have recently seen this A-list stunt performer playing a Wildling alongside Mastodon on the recent episode of Game of Thrones!

Classic Rock premiered the Comfy Slippers video, making it their 'Track of the Week': http://www.teamrock.com/features/2015-06-05/classic-rock-s-tracks-of-the-week-29

You can also see the stunning animated video for ‘Firefly’ below, with sketchy, monochrome visuals augmenting a classy song about facing your own personal demons head on and the inherent challenges therein. Check the video premiere out on Loudwire: http://loudwire.com/johnny-wore-black-firefly-exclusive-video-premiere/

David Ellefson of Megadeth chose to work alongside Johnny Wore Black on production duties, as did Grammy Award Winner David Bottrill. The fact that such storied veterans of the business believe in the music of Johnny Wore Black goes some way to confirming the potential of this unusually dark artist.

In the words of David Ellefson himself:

“Johnny Wore Black has a very unique sound that I like and as an artist creating a unique sound is one of the hardest things to do, you either have it or you don’t and to me Johnny Wore Black definitely has it.”

Notable collaborators of Johnny Wore Black include Tim Simenon (Bomb The Bass), Danny Langsman (Shanks and Bigfoot), Loretta Heywood (Winter in July), Simon Hutchby & Gez Walton (Earthtone 9) and more.

The singles are both taken from the current Johnny Wore Black album ‘Walking Underwater Part 2’. Available now, it followed debut LP ‘Walking Underwater Part 1’ as a double whammy of albums released in 2014 to excellent reviews. ‘Part 2’ sees Johnny Wore Black continue to evolve his unique energy and song writing style, with an intense, passionate lyrical style.

Gonzo Multimedia To Release “The Boomtown Rats - Live in Germany '78” (DVD/CD) – June 8, 2015

London, UK - Gonzo Multimedia will be releasing an unreleased live DVD/CD by rock legends The Boomtown Rats featuring Bob Geldof titled “Live In Germany '78” on June 8, 2015!

In 1975 friends Garry Roberts, Simon Crowe, Johnnie Moylett, Patrick Cusack and Gerry Cott formed a band in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland. Bob Geldof was originally invited to be the band's manager, but he soon found himself nominated to take on the role of lead vocals by guitarist Garry Roberts, who originally had that job and didn't want it.

The band's early influences were Dr. Feelgood, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Doors and Bob Marley, among many others. Gerry and Pete arranged the band's first gig for Halloween 1975 under the name of The Nightlife Thugs, at the Bolton Street Technical College, where they - and Johnnie, were studying Architectural Technology. Just before the band went on stage, they changed their name to The Boomtown Rats, who were a gang mentioned in Woody Guthrie’s autobiography, “Bound For Glory”.

The Rats were soon causing a buzz throughout the whole of Ireland. In 1976 The Boomtown Rats relocated to England in search of a record deal. They turned down a million pound deal from Richard Branson's Virgin Records, and decided instead to sign for a new label that had been set up by former Phonogram man Nigel Grange and DJ Chris Hill. The new label was called Ensign.

The Boomtown Rats played their first ever UK gig on May 6th. 1977 at the Lodestar Club, Ribchester, Blackburn, Lancashire. The supporting acts were Demolition, and Disco-Punk Chris Graham. Having undertaken a hectic schedule of touring including gigs with Tom Petty, and The Ramones, The Boomtown Rats debut single “Looking After Number One” entered the UK charts in it’s first week of release at No. 78. The NME made it their single of the week. The Rats did their first TV show, a turn on The Marc Bolan Show. Marc tragically died 2 weeks later in a motor accident. “Looking After Number One” peaked at No.11 in the UK charts and The Rats were invited to do their first TOTP appearance. The band had now arrived. The Rats released their debut album, the imaginatively entitled “Boomtown Rats”. The album reached 18 in the UK charts.

In 1978 the single “She's So Modern” reached No.12 in the UK charts, more gigs, more tours, more exposure. Geldof was now becoming as well known for his motor-mouth as he is for his music, picking up the nickname “Bob The Gob” by the music press for his outspoken views. The Rats second album “A Tonic For The Troops” produced by Robert Mutt Lange reaches No.8 in the album charts and hangs around for 44 weeks. There was more TV, a promotional trip to America and November saw The Rats reach the top, when the single “Rat Trap” knocked John Travolta & Olivia Newton John off the No.1 spot.

The Boomtown Rats made history as the first Irish band to have a UK No.1 hit. “Rat Trap” is also recognized as the first New Wave song that made No.1 in the charts. In January 1979 Geldof hears the story on the news of the Californian schoolgirl, Brenda Spencer who shot and killed her principal of the school and injured many of her school mates. When interviewed and asked why she did it, she replied “I Don’t Like Mondays”. This quote proved to be inspirational to Bob Geldof & Johnnie Fingers. The ensuing single became a smash hit world-wide, reaching the No.1 spot in 32 countries and quite rightly became an all-time classic. The Boomtown Rats undertook a world tour, taking in America, Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. The American leg of the tour ended at The Palladium in New York. The Boomtown Rats third album “The Fine Art Of Surfacing” reached No.7 in the UK album charts.

In 1980, a Dublin court canceled a Boomtown Rats concert. Bob Geldof rejected the court's decision and The Boomtown Rats battled on for 2 weeks to be allowed to play in Ireland. The Boomtown Rats held the gig at Leixlip Castle to fourteen thousand fans... with Bob Geldof claiming a Boomtown Rats victory.

In 1981 The Rats recorded their new album “Mondo Bongo” in Ibiza with producer Tony Visconti who had previously produced albums with T Rex, Bowie, Thin Lizzy, The Stranglers, Iggy Pop, to name but a few. The album “Mondo Bongo” went gold again. Now a recurring event for each new Rats album. The album featured the classic hit “Banana Republic” which has been called Ireland's alternative national anthem! Lead guitarist Gerry Cott now left the band, who continued as a 5-piece. Geldof stars in director Alan Parkers classic film of Pink Floyd's The Wall. The Rats tour Thailand, India, Japan,Malaya, Hong Kong and Singapore.

In 1982 a new generation of bands breaks through and The Rats new album “V Deep”, again produced by Visconti becomes The Rats first record setback. The single House On Fire does well in the UK charts. The Rats tour of the UK to promote the album however is a complete sell-out. In 1984 The Rats brilliant single “Drag Me Down” limps into the Top 50.. The Geldof masterpiece “Dave” sinks without trace, although Pete Townsend of The Who said Dave was “the best single of 1984”.

In late October 1984 Geldof watches he Ethiopian famine on the BBC News and decides to “do something”. The other Rats wholeheartedly support him.

In 1985 The Boomtown Rats sing on the Geldof/Midge Ure penned  Band Aid record “Do They Know It's Christmas”. In its first week of release the single became the UK's fastest seller of all time, entering the chart at number one and going on to sell over three million copies, making it the biggest-selling single in UK history up to that point. On July 13th 1985, The Boomtown Rats were just one of the greatest artists in rock 'n roll history to play the Live Aid Concert in front of billions of people.

In 1986 , and so The Boomtown Rats play their last gig in Ireland for Self-Aid.

Unlike 10 years previously when The Rats understood precisely what they stood for, who they were and what their intention were, by '86 this had now become unclear. Where could they go musically after all that had been achieved as a group both musically and socially. There were few battles left to fight that they hadn't already won. And so they went their separate ways.

In 2013 The Boomtown Rats re-group and once again overwhelm the tens of thousands at the Isle of Wight Festival. The songs had not only lasted but had over the years attained a newer relevance and power. Hearing them afresh the critics were amazed at how contemporary the Rats, their music, their songs and their attitude - unchanged after all those years still were. And are!!

And now, comes an unreleased live concert from Germany 1978 on DVD/CD!

Here is the undiluted towering energy, speed, anger and sheer joy of playing in one of the great British/Irish bands of our time at their peak and in their prime.

Classic Rock Guitar Legend Pat Travers Blasts Into The Stratosphere With A Brand New Studio Album, Retro Rocket!

Los Angeles, CA - Even after three and half decades of smoking hot guitar licks, powerful vocal performances, and just plain kick ass, foot stomping rock & roll, legendary guitar slinger Pat Travers is still firing on all boosters! Fresh off the Rock Legends Cruise in February, Travers takes the helm of another ship with Retro Rocket, a powerful new album of studio recordings to be released by Purple Pyramid Records on March 17. Then, he’ll hit the road again with his superb band playing shows across the U.S. throughout March and April.

As its name suggests, Retro Rocket finds Travers digging deep into the early years of his outstanding career, finding inspiration in the fiery grooves of 1978’s Heat In The Street and, of course, his monumental 1979 live album Go For What You Know. The lead off track, “I Always Run,” kicks things into high gear with a multi-layered, guitar chugging hard rock thumper that shows this veteran rocker isn’t about to slow his pace. And even when things do slow down, like the first half of the gospel-tinged “Who Can You Turn To,” it turns out to be mere build up to a massive climax of shredding solos, monster drum fills, and all out frenzied rock ecstasy. Travers’ voice shines throughout the album, seeming to only get better, more raw, more passionate with age; must be all that cocaine drinkin’ and whiskey snortin’! When you’ve had a career as long and as rich as Travers, to be releasing an album with this much energy and passion is quite a feat indeed, and hard rock fans young and old should not miss this ride of a lifetime!

After releasing a trio of releases hailed as some of the slickest and hottest guitar-rock albums ever - the aforementioned classics of ’78 & ’79 plus the 1980 blockbuster Crash And Burn - Canadian-born Pat Travers would go on to deliver classy melodic rock throughout the ‘80s, followed by a blues period in the ‘90s, and into the new millennium with several unique projects both solo and band efforts. Cited by Metallica’s Kirk Hammett as one of his favorite guitarist, the Travers legend and influence extends beyond the barriers of time, place, or genre. His live shows continue to impress, deftly balancing old favorites with fresh new material. Retro Rocket carries on Travers’ proud tradition of seriously passionate musical prowess mixed with pure, unadulterated fun!

Classic Rock Legends Wishbone Ash To Undertake Pilgrimage North America Tour!

Tour to span West Coast, South in April/May 2015

Wishbone Ash, one of the most influential guitar bands in the history of rock, returns to these shores in April 2015 for the first leg of their Pilgrimage North America Tour. Following spring and fall tours in 2014 that featured the group's best-selling “Live Dates” album, this year Wishbone Ash will present classics spanning their 46-year career and showcase selections from their latest release, “Blue Horizon.”

After logging more than 20,000 miles touring North America last year, the group will begin their 2015 spring tour in Vancouver, British Columbia, winding down the West Coast of the US and then heading across the South – hitting cities that include Portland, Seattle, Oakland, San Juan Capistrano, Ramona, Phoenix, Austin and Dallas. Visit www.wishboneash.com/tourdates for the complete schedule.

“The 'Live Dates Tour' went just great,” says bandleader and founding member Andy Powell. “To play Texas and California out West, and Mississippi in the Deep South, for example, was really nice. You realize just how popular guitar-based rock is in these places. We aim to repeat the experience and build on it this year.”

The title of the 2015 tour is a nod to the Wishbone Ash's beloved “Pilgrimage” album, but it's also a fitting way to describe what has become an annual journey filled with familiar faces and places. “Each year when we tour countries on our world circuit, these visits feel like pilgrimages to all our old haunts,” says Powell. “We visit venues we've performed in multiple times over the years. We know the staff there, we often stay in the same hotels, visit the same restaurants, we see the same folks thousands of miles apart. The fans, of course, are the major component. We catch up on their stories and their lives.”

In 2014, Wishbone Ash released “Blue Horizon” (Solid Rockhouse Records) to international acclaim. Praised for its stylistic variety and masterful performances, the album features guest artist, Ireland's Pat McManus, on fiddle for two tracks. “Blue Horizon” also includes two songs written by Aynsley Powell (Andy Powell's son) and one by former Wishbone Ash guitarist Roger Filgate.

According to Powell, the album's diversity reflects the culmination of several factors. “The band basically lives together year-round, so we have a very strong level of communication that translates in our performances and recordings,” he says. “We've come to an era where the industry has to pigeonhole a band as Classic Rock, Prog Rock, Heritage Rock and so on. The truth is that we have always kept our options open and always relied on the musicianship of the players to lead the way. It's fun to be stylistically diverse and this has, in its way, contributed to our longevity.”

While they're making pilgrimages to various parts of the globe, Wishbone Ash will undertake some live recording projects, as well: one a vinyl-only limited release direct from Metropolis Studios in Chiswick, London; another to be recorded over a three-day residency at Le Triton in Paris for a DVD release.

Powell also plans to publish his autobiography this fall. “It's quite an undertaking to put 45 years of being a touring musician in this one band into book form,” he says.

Formed in 1969, Wishbone Ash has to its credit 24 original studio recordings, 10 live albums and four live DVDs along with a DVD rockumentary (“This is Wishbone Ash”). The band is led by founding member Andy Powell on guitar and vocals, trading licks with Finland’s guitar wizard Muddy Manninen. Bassist Bob Skeat, an 18-year veteran of the band and in-demand studio musician, sets the pace with Joe Crabtree, one of the best of Britain’s new breed of drummers whose performance credits include Pendragon and David Cross of King Crimson.

Lynyrd Skynyrd cites Wishbone Ash as a primary influence on their style along with Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden and, more recently, heavyweights like Opeth. All have been transformed by the original, legendary twin-guitar approach of Wishbone Ash. There is no other rock band in history that has done more with the twin guitar concept than The Ash.

Longtime fans and new converts will find that Wishbone Ash offers an undeniable concert experience.

Hard Rock Review: California Breed

Release Date: May 19, 2014
Label: Frontiers Records

If you are looking for music to rock out to, then look no further, because California Breed has what you need to get going. With a sound that channels the great bands of the 70s, while bringing a 21st century edge too, California Breed is one hot new band that will get fans of the genre talking with delight over their fiery debut release.

Born out of the ashes of the hard rock group Black Country Communion, California Breed consists of Glen Hughes (bass, vocals) of Deep Purple, Andrew Watt (guitar, vocals), and Jason Bonham (drums), who was recently replaced by Joey Castillo due to Bonham’s other commitments. They have come together to make California Breedand it is one unrelenting rock album. They brought their A game on this and it sure does show in the final product.

“The Way” comes out hard and unforgiving, like being run over by a stamped of wild horses. It is an incredible hard rock song that gives a modern take on the hard rock sound from the 70s. It is all attitude and swagger, making it the premier song on the album. “The Way” is the type of song that will come to mind when you think of California Breed.  Keeping the album going strong, “Sweet Tea” strikes the perfect balance in showcasing the trio’s individual strengths and what happens when it comes together for one fierce song. “Chemical Rain” shows off a heavier and slower sound, and the guitars really shred on this one.

The album’s first single, “Midnight Oil,” is a fantastic, catchy rock song. It has that musical quality that just draws the listener in with great riffs, inspiring vocals, and methodical drumming. But the ending really takes this song to the next level. The guitars are crazy and the drumming is insane, as we hear that the apple did not fall from the tree. California Breed show off their softer side on the beautiful “All Falls Down.” It is a song full of passion that hits deeply. The heavy and melodic “The Grey” gets things rocking again. The song moves swiftly along and really explodes when it hits the animated chorus. “Days They Come” is a visceral song with great energy and mesmerizing vocals and “Spit You Out” is a fun, spirited rock song.

Starting off the last part of the album is “Strong.” It is not my favorite song on here, but it has grown on me with repeated listens. It is a fluid and lively song that some will appreciate. “Invisible” sinks its teeth in deep and early and does not let go. The vocals just soar over everything. It is the type of hypnotic song that will have you singing along without even noticing at first. “Scars” opens with a pretty funky baseline and carries a certain bravado in the vocals that gives it an extra edge. Bringing the album to a close is “Breathe.” The music rises and falls at all the right moments and Julian Lennon’s vocals work quite complementary with Hughes’.

When all is said and done, California Breedis kick-ass rock album from this new band. If you are a fan of hard rock, then I would strongly suggest that you go out and pick this one up. From start to finish, it does not disappoint.  California Breed is one band to keep a close eye on in the future.

4.5/5 Stars

World-Renowned Guitar Player Steve Hunter Releases Live CD & DVD 'Tone Poems Live'

“Steve is a wonderful musician with great chops and a big heart.” - Peter Gabriel

Los Angeles, CA - For the first time ever, Blues Rock Guitarist Steve Hunter, renowned for his work with Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed and Alice Cooper, is captured on film playing a career-spanning anthology in an intimate setting with some of the worlds finest players.

Also featuring Tony Levin, Phil Aaberg and Alvino Bennett!

The DVD, titled 'Tone Poems Live', was filmed on August 24th 2013 at a recording studio in LA. Alongside Steve was Tony Levin on Bass (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson) Phil Aaberg on Keyboards (Elvin Bishop, Peter Gabriel) Alvino Bennett on Drums (Dave Mason, Robin Trower).

They rehearsed for two days and filmed on the third day as though it were in front of an audience. Fourteen tunes, each played twice, with no overdubs added later. The material was chosen from most of Steve’s solo albums plus a few covers, including ‘Solsbury Hill’ ‘What’s Going On’ and Stevie Ray Vaughan’s ‘Riviera Paradise’.

“The soulful notes that Steve Hunter plays have the perfect balance of fat warm tone, taste and personality” - Steve Vai

This is the first time Steve Hunter has ever been filmed doing his own material plus material of his own choice. Steve is now legally blind and although not out of the question, touring has become more of a challenge. The recording session was produced and recorded by Brian Brinkerhoff and Paul Lani.

Tony Levin: “Steve is one of those wonderful musicians who speaks from the heart”

Phil Aaberg: “There’s something about the subtlety, the texture and the tone quality that he gets with an individual note, to me that’s a great guitar player”

Alvino Bennett: “I’m hearing all three Kings; Albert, BB and Freddy”

Jason Becker: “I can't put into words how much your soul comes out of your fingers. Everyone should see and hear this DVD”!

Classic Rock Ensemble Vespers Nine To Release Debut CD 'True Story'

Miami, FL - Much to the excitement of music fans worldwide, classic rock ensemble Vespers Nine will be releasing their eagerly awaited debut CD 'True Story' on September 27, 2014. Vespers Nine, a five member premier classic rock band based out of South Florida, launched in late 2012. Made up of well-seasoned musicians, the band is a versatile, high energy rock band, that also writes and performs it's own original music. Musical influences include Foreigner, Journey, Heart, The Beatles, Queen, Van Halen, Styx, Rush, Metallica and Boston to name only a few.

The entire 'True Story' album was recorded at AfterHours Recording Studio, in North Miami, and all songs were produced by the accomplished and renowned music producer, Hal Batt. The recording of the album spanned over the course of several months, with sessions running sometimes as short as several hours, to well up to 12 to 14 hours straight, for several days in a row, in some cases.

Says bassist Gricel Julie Dosal, “There is no cumulative meaning or concept for the CD as a whole other than five musicians coming together for the love of rock music and the inspiration it brings. The desire to form an alliance built primarily as a vehicle that allowed for free creative expression; an outlet for creative energy that each member was searching for, and which made this band's formation easy. A true labor of love that came together quite naturally. A very inspired and collaborative effort of five individuals with similar musical tastes and influences that lent itself to a seemingly effortless flow of ideas when it came to songwriting. Each song written became a story reflecting the band's growth and evolution at the time it was written. So in essence, if one had to describe the concept behind the CD, it is essentially the True Story of the group's desire to write, play and explore music as first and foremost, a labor of love.”

Along with the CD release, Vespers Nine has filmed a new video for the song “Forever Yours”, which is primarily a story of love and hope. It represents a similar theme as does the name of the band, Vespers Nine; that being, everlasting devotion. The video was completely shot in South Florida, by acclaimed filmmaker, David Liz, a native Floridian, as are all of the band members, but one. The storyline was conceptualized by lead singer, John Simon and bassist, Gricel Julie Dosal, with the help of Liz, who together formed a visual message of unending commitment, loyalty, devotion and love.

Watch the video here: http://vespersnine.com/Videos.html

Vespers Nine was recently featured in the PBS television debut episode of 'The Gig' - like a local version of VH1's 'Behind the Music' docu-series but without the drama - which began as a four-minute web episode last spring and has evolved into a 30-minute TV program. WPBT is looking to make "The Gig'' a full-fledged series next year. Cameras capture band members laying tracks in a North Miami recording studio, where they explain how Heart, Metallica and Toto became their musical influences. (If you're wondering about the band's name, members explain that it came from a poem by S.T. Coleridge.)

Gricel explains, “During one recording session, a local PBS television show titled 'The Gig' was filmed in studio, highlighting Vespers Nine, which was used to create the pilot for the series designed to showcase up and coming musical talent. The show featured Vespers Nine, with shots of the band laying down tracks to the songs 'Heart Wide Open' and 'Waiting For You', as well as interviews and a subsequent performance before a live studio audience shot at a later date.”

Vespers Nine features:

JOHN SIMON (Lead and background vocalist), a seasoned musician fronting the band's lead vocals, offers an amazing full range voice and brings an ability to sing just about anything to the band. His versatility, vocal power and control allows the group to do a wide range of musical styles, while always maintaining a rock feel. John is also an accomplished drummer and percussionist.

JAMES MARTINEZ (Lead and rhythm guitarist, background vocalist), is also a well seasoned player who, with his wealth of live performance experience, adds his unique playing style that includes fierce solos, and everything from heavy crunch rhythm parts, to haunting clean sounds - running the gauntlet of guitar. All in all, James incorporates a dazzling array of guitar techniques and sheer intensity into the songs that he has written or collaborated on. His facility on the fretboard brings about piercing and emotive soloing that is nothing less than captivating. James also adds harmony vocals to Vespers Nine during live performances.

JESSE RIVAS (Lead and rhythm guitarist), also a well-seasoned guitarist, is known for his ability to blend heavy, intense guitars with melodically nuanced song structure. Well versed in music, through his formal musical education, Jesse's playing is both intense and dramatic, with fast tempos and harmonized leads, but he can just as easily streamline to a more commercial and expressive range. This versatility shows in his broad writing and playing style that lends itself well to a band that enjoys covering many stylistic bases.

GRICEL JULIE DOSAL (Bass player, lead vocalist and background vocalist), brings years of live performance, writing and studio recording experience to the band. Gricel's playing brings a groove, tightness and melody to the band with her emphasis on time and feel that helps bond the rhythm foundation. Her style locks easily in with the drums and always effectively bridges that gap between guitars and drums. Gricel's playing locks in a solid groove helping to keep the band's impeccable time and sets the foundation for the other melodic instruments. As a second lead vocalist, Gricel (younger sister to lead vocalist, John Simon) adds her own particular vocal style and range, along with her own distinct resonance when taking on the occasional lead vocals. However, being the younger sibling of the lead vocalist, it's the background harmony vocals which are a highlight of the group. Due primarily to the fact that natural sibling compatibility works extremely well with vocals harmonies, Vespers Nine enjoys a genuine advantage with well-blended vocal harmonies.

GEORGE DOSAL (Drummer and percussionist), brings extensive knowledge from his many years in cover and original bands, along with much studio and live performance experience. His diverse and distinct style is formed from a variety of influences that range from rock, hard rock, progressive rock, jazz, Latin and everything in between. George is highly adaptable to any and all styles of rock, which allows for his ability to layer styles and add flavor to the band's music; he is an integral part of the Vespers Nine sound.

In support of the 'True Story' CD release, Vespers Nine is currently writing new original material to record in-studio, in preparation for future shows. In closing Gricel has this to impart, “Very simply, we wish to remind people that although the world has its myriad of problems and there is no lack of negativity, our music generally strives to bring a message of hope, strength and inspiration. The underlying message always being to never cease the desire to search for the source of your ambitions and always keep the faith in whatever you do.”

Blues Music Award Winners Trampled Under Foot & Mike Zito Lead An Array Of Stellar Blues Artists On A Salute To Creedence Clearwater Revival!

Also features Blitzen Trapper, Duke Robillard, Sonny Landreth, The Mynabirds, and more!

Los Angeles, CA - Proving once again that good songs know no bounds or genre, a host of superstar blues artists bring their immense skills and talents to bear on the classic rock canon of John Fogerty and his legendary Creedence Clearwater Revival. The result is a fascinating new perspective on the widely celebrated and deeply influential music of the great CCR! The project will see a release on CD this July 22 on Cleopatra Records.

Founded in California’s San Francisco Bay Area in the late ‘60s, Creedence Clearwater Revival had their first taste of major success in 1969 with “Proud Mary,” a rollicking slice of swampy roots rock that rolled on the river to the No. 2 spot on the Billboard charts, and quickly became the group’s most covered song including an unforgettable 1971 version by Ike & Tina Turner. Hit after hit followed: “Bad Moon Rising,” “Green River,” “Down On The Corner,” “Fortunate Son,” and an absolutely astonishing string of 6 platinum-selling albums. Fogerty & Co. had not only achieved immense commercial success but they also came to be appreciated by music critics everywhere as one of the quintessential American rock bands, and fittingly were inducted into the Rock Hall Of Fame in 1993.

Since the group’s breakup in 1972, numerous bands and artists have offered their own spins on CCR’s greatest songs, but none as unique as the versions heard here. Kicking things off is slide guitar legend Sonny Landreth’s brilliant transformation of “Fortunate Son’s” punchy, iconic riff into a shifty, multi-note melody as vocalist Mike Zito (of Royal Southern Brotherhood) sings along. Portland’s own Blitzen Trapper, a critical favorite of the blues-folk revivalist set, turns in a dirty stomping, harmonica and organ infused take on the classic “Proud Mary,” while another indie favorite The Mynabirds offer an appropriately spooky “Bad Moon Rising.” One of the biggest names in modern blues, the great Duke Robillard, shines on a heartbreaking rendition of “Who’ll Stop The Rain,” and what better way to close the album than with the 2014 Blues Music Awards winners for Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year, Trampled Under Foot, who stir up a potent gumbo of gritty vocals and shimmering guitar on “Born On The Bayou.” These treats and many more await fans of CCR, blues music, and lovers of timeless Americana rock!

1. Fortunate Son - Mike Zito & Sonny Landreth
2. Bad Moon Rising - The Mynabirds
3. Proud Mary - Blitzen Trapper
4. Down On The Corner - Spirit Family Reunion
5. Have You Ever Seen The Rain - Dead Man Winter
6. Looking Out My Back Door - LeRoux
7. Who’ll Stop The Rain - Duke Robillard
8. Up Around The Bend - South Memphis String Band
9. Susie Q - Will Wilde
10. Run Through The Jungle - Smokin’ Joe Kubek & Bnois King
11. Green River - Kirk Fletcher
12. Born On The Bayou - Trampled Under Foot

Classic Rock Review: Various Artists-Light My Fire – A Classic Rock Salute to The Doors

Release Date: June 24, 2014
Label: Cleopatra

When it comes to the great music makers of the late 60s and early 70s, there is no question that The Doors is among them.  Formed in Los Angeles, California in 1965, The Doors were Jim Morrison (vocals), Ray Manzarek (keyboards), Robby Krieger (guitar), and John Densmore (drums).  Taking their name from the Aldous Huxley’s book about experimenting with mescaline, The Doors would go on to be of the most influential and controversial bands of their generation, and, not to forget, one of the most successful, selling over 100 million albums worldwide since their self-titled debut was released in 1967.

Led by their charismatic front man, The Doors took the rock world with gusto, topping the charts with hit records and songs.  At the forefront of the 60s counterculture movement, they were no stranger to controversy.  Refusing to bow to a call for censorship saw them banned from The Ed Sullivan Show after one performance.  After playing their #1 hit song “Light My Fire” without the recommended studio changes, the producers informed the band that they would never to play on the show again. An unfazed Morrison replied: "Hey man. We just didthe Sullivan Show."  Unfortunately, rock stardom caught up Morrison, who died in Paris of a drug overdose in 1971.  The remaining members would release two more albums before disbanding.  Though they spent less than a decade together, the incredible music that they made together lives on.
Light My Fire – A Classic Rock Salute to The Doorsplays to tribute to The Doors endearing legacy.  Produced by former Yes member Billy Sherwood, the appearing musicians read like a Who’s Who of the classic rock world.  The album features appearances by Jimi Jamison, Lou Gramm, Ian Gillian, Pat Travers, Chick Churchill, Todd Rundgren, Geoff Downes, Steve Howe, and many others.

Light My Fire – A Classic Rock Salute to The Doorsis at its best when there is a lot of energy put into the song, such as the opening track “L.A. Woman.”  It is one of the better songs on the album and is a sharp and crisp rendition. “Roadhouse Blues” is another song that sounds amazing and is a real testament to the type of quality that can be found on the album.  “Intro (People Are Strange)” is another gem.  It is a piece of music that is interesting, creative, and unique.  Also, I think the album really hits its stride in its latter half with spirted performances from “Hello, I Love You” to “The End.”

It is no means a perfect album, though.  I think that some fans will prefer the original versions over some of these covers.  With bands as talented and iconic as The Doors, some things that they do on the originals are hard to duplicate, the heights too high to reach.  Also, there is an issue of overproduction on some of the songs, such as “People Are Strange.” The music sounds too slick and polished, too much like some of the modern stuff being pumped out.  It did not get in the way much of me enjoying the album, though.

Light My Fire: A Classic Rock Salute to The Doors is one of the better tribute albums that I have heard.  It is full of gifted musicians who love the music and it shows in their efforts.  I would not suggest this as an introduction to the band if you are new to their music.  I do recommend this to classic rock fans and The Doors fans, of course.  It makes for a nice addition to the collection and keeps The Doors legacy going strong.

Drum Legend Corky Laing Is Presented The 'Bonzo Bash Legend Award' At John Bonham's Bonzo Bash By Kiss's Peter Criss!

“As the drummer for Mountain, Corky Laing shares the title as one of the best players of his genre. He's also the same good guy he used to be.” – Levon Helm

NYC - Much to the excitement of drummers worldwide, one of rock's icons, drum legend Corky Laing, recently received the prestigous 'Bonzo Bash Legend Award' at the Bergen PAC in New Jersey on May 31st. The award was presented by original Kiss drummer Peter Criss!

Corky says, “It was a tremendous honor and a total surprise when Peter Criss (from Kiss) presented the 'Legend Award' to me at the John Bonham 'Bonzo Bash'. And to receive the award in front of all these brilliant drummers was a real rush. There seems to be a kind of 'magical crazy glue' that keeps the drumming community tightly wrapped. It's not like the 'Super Bowl of drumming', there is no competition. Every drummer has his/her own uniqueness. We aspire to reach out while digging deep with a passion to become the very best. I humbly believe in receiving this award I'm being recognized for doing just that. Every day for me is another downbeat, and what a joy it is to live and breath it. It may sound a bit out there, but that's exactly how I feel when I play. I am sincerely in love with my 'all consuming mistress', my beautiful drum kit!”

Watch the video of Corky receiving the 'Legend Award': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lKT_tMYsi8

As well as Mountain, Laing has recorded with a long list of legendary artists including Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, Bo Diddley and Ozzy Osbourne. He has performed with Meat Loaf, Gov’t Mule, the Allman Brothers, Voivod, Teenage Head and dozens of others. And according to Modern Drummer magazine, Corky Laing “has done as much as anyone in Western culture to turn the cowbell into a rock ’n roll staple”.

This prolific artist is busier than ever. His latest project, 'Playing God', a rock opera created with Matti Häyry and Tuija Takala from Finland, premiered in Basel, Switzerland, and Paris, France in 2013. Recently, in the early spring of 2014, the rock opera was performed in Helsinki, Finland. Laing wrote the music for the album, and is the Musical Director in the stage performances where he also performs a key role, LUKE, who plays drums and sings. The 'Playing God' CD was released on GONZO Multimedia on July 15, 2013.

Badfinger Legend Joey Molland Releases 'Demos Old And New' and 'This Way Up' CDs On Gonzo MultiMedia

London, UK – On the heels of his critically acclaimed new solo album 'Return To Memphis', Bandfinger legend Joey Molland has released two hard to find, sought after albums on UK's Gonzo Multimedia - 'Demos Old And New' and 'This Way Up'! Signed to the Beatles' Apple label in 1968 as The Iveys, the band quickly changed their name to Badfinger by 1969. The group would go on to score four consecutive worldwide hits from 1970 to 1972: “Come And Get It” (written and produced by Paul McCartney), “No Matter What”, “Day After Day” and “Baby Blue”. In 1971, a cover of the Badfinger song “Without You” by Harry Nilsson became a number one hit on the Billboard charts. Though the band suffered major tragedies throughout its career, surviving member Joey Molland has continued to keep the Badfinger flame alight through concerts and recordings over the past 30 years. And now he is back with a fantastic new album 'Return To Memphis', which was produced by Carl 'Blue' Wise and recorded at Willie Mitchell's Royal Studios in Memphis.

Joey Molland - This Way Up (CD)

In 2001, Joey Molland released the critically acclaimed album 'This Way Up' independently. CD Universe describes the album as: “…one of the best solo discs that ex-members of the Beatles never made. It bears repeating - 'This Way Up' contains the essence of what was great about those early solo Beatles albums, not surprising because Molland played on some of them. The surprise is that a sideman from those sessions has created a mini-masterpiece rivaling, and on some songs equaling, those classic and important recordings. 13 perfectly constructed songs by Molland do more than just carry on a tradition - they combine to give proof that this style of music is still so very vital.”

Tracks:
1. Mirrors
2. Happy
3. A Way To Be
4. The Bust
5. This Must Be Love

Joey's latest CD 'Return To Memphis' has been garnering major press worldwide and follows the major buzz surrounding the Badfinger track “Baby Blue” being played during the finale of A&E's hit TV series 'Breaking Bad'.

Says Joey, “I did the record in Memphis and so it's called 'Return To Memphis'. I started out loving Memphis music...Elvis and all that. A lot of great rockers came from there. So I opted to go down there and make a record and it was a great experience.”

Originally from Liverpool, Joey now resides in the US, where he continues to perform with Joey Molland's Badfinger. Along with Joey on guitar and vocals, the current lineup features Mark Healey (bass/vocals), Steve Wozny (keyboards/vocals), Mike Ricciardi (drums). Superstars Of Classic Rock Honor The Music & Legacy Of The Doors Feat. Members of Deep Purple, Foreigner, Yes, Rainbow, Mountain, Moody Blues, ELP and Others!

Featuring Todd Rundgren, Ian Gillan, Edgar Winter, Steve Morse, David Johansen, Larry Coryell, Mark Farner, Patrick Moraz, Mick Box, Keith Emerson, Lou Gramm, Leslie West, Thijs Van Leer, Steve Cropper, Rick Wakeman, Roye Albrighton, Nik Turner, Steve Hillage, Zoot Horn Rollo and Others!

Los Angeles, CA - A star-studded syndicate of rock virtuosos have gathered together to pay tribute to one of the best loved and most influential bands of all-time, The Doors, on a new CD release titled Light My Fire - A Classic Rock Salute To The Doors to be released by Purple Pyramid Records on June 24th! Produced by the extraordinarily talented Billy Sherwood, the album features brand new interpretations of classic Doors cuts that defined an entire generation, songs such as “Light My Fire,” “Riders On The Storm,” “Break On Through (To The Other Side),” “Love Her Madly,” “L.A. Woman,” “People Are Strange,” and lots more!

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear some of The Doors’ peers and prodigies tackle these seminal songs. Not one but TWO members of the quintessential prog rock band Yes, keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman and lead guitarist Steve Howe, joined Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan on the signature song, “Light My Fire,” which as Wakeman explains, “has always been one of those iconic tracks that keyboard players listen to because of the fact that there are so few tracks with keyboard/organ solos on them compared to our six-stringed buddies. It’s also a solo area that is totally open to interpretation so whatever you do is not comparable to the original, so it was an absolute joy to do.” Howe likewise enthuses, “I was delighted to play on this album as The Doors were a band I heard a lot as everywhere I went in the late ‘60s their music was playing, at friend’s, in restaurants, gigs & bars throughout London. I’m sure I saw them play at Middle Earth, a then hip club. Then, when the reissue more recently came out, I got totally back into their music, especially ‘Light My Fire.’”

Another keyboard legend, Geoff Downes, likewise extolled the genius of Doors’ organist Ray Manzarek saying, “It was a real privilege to be asked to participate in this project. Ray Manzarek was one of the pioneers of keyboard playing in rock music, and had a major influence on me and many others. His style was totally unique, and an integral element into what made The Doors sound the way they did.”

Meanwhile, renegade guitarist Steve Morse, of Dixie Dregs fame, recollects that The Doors were “a soundtrack, literally, for some of the most memorable times, good and bad, that I experienced as a young teen. Like many of my favorites, they were adventurous, improvising, unafraid of what the media might say, and all with a sort of lyrical freedom that still stands up today.” The Cars’ lead axeman Elliot Easton proclaims, “I had a wonderful time reinterpreting ‘Spanish Caravan,’” a song Easton found both “challenging and very rewarding!” And jazz fusion Larry Coryell concludes, “The Doors were the unofficial representatives to the world for LA, not ‘Los Angeles,’ but ‘LA.’ Their sound - raunchy, cluttered, sassy, leering, kind of mean, and always horny was the sound of LA/Los Angeles itself. How many times circa ‘65-66 did my first wife Julie and I drive through LA on the freeway listening to, say, ‘Love Me Two Times,’ and think that The Doors were the sound of LA just as clearly as Thelonious Monk was the sound of NYC.”

That sound continues to reverberate outward through both space and time, touching each new generation around the globe and keeping The Doors’ flame burning brighter than ever!

Producer Billy Sherwood sums it up when he declares, “The Doors’ music will live on forever, and it’s my hope that we’ve paid tribute to the band in the highest way possible.”
