Chances are that if you are a true music enthusiast, especially of guitar-driven Southern rock and blues, you have heard of Macon, Georgia’s official music ambassador Joey Stuckey. The blind producer and recording artist launched a new music festival in his hometown on September 29, 2017. The festival, “Joey Stuckey’s Alive Day,” hosted an array of talented musicians from across the state of Georgia. This free, family-friendly event was held in celebration of the anniversary of Stuckey's surviving brain tumor surgery as a child. While the brain tumor left Stuckey blind and with other health challenges, his parents started celebrating the anniversary of the successful removal of the brain tumor as a way to turn what could have been a traumatic experience for a child into a triumphant experience!

Stuckey sees his “Alive Day” as a chance to connect with family, friends and fans and to revel in the joy of living and music. It is a day dedicated to positivity and to uplifting the community. The inaugural concert featured 8 artists, a variety of activities for families, food trucks, perfect weather and over 500 music-lovers in attendance! Mayor Robert Reichert honored Stuckey by issuing a proclamation naming September 29th “Joey Stuckey’s Alive Day in Macon/Bibb.”

Says Stuckey, “The outpouring of love and support was humbling. It was great to have so many people gathering to enjoy the beautiful weather and outstanding music. I am excited about the continued growth of the festival and am already looking forward to next year.”

Concert Review: Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes

I have one word for the concert I saw last night, FANTASTIC! Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes worked up the capacity crowd at the Colonial Theater in the Berkshires to a dancing frenzy. Part of my process of observation is watching the reaction of the crowd or certain interesting individuals at concerts. In this case, entire sections of people were standing up and dancing last night. I have been to many concerts at this gorgeous venue and have never witnessed that. It was a lot of fun.

I remember this band from back in the 70s and I know they never made it big like the acts they influenced, namely Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi. They decided to stick to their guns and not cooperate with record labels and slick executives in suits. Just before the end of the show I stepped out to the merch table to buy their new release on vinyl, which is their first recording in 5 years. I spoke to the gent behind the table who happened to be Johnny’s life time friend. He told me Johnny never wanted to sell out and please the labels so they carried on and made the music they loved. So here we are still listening to his music and enjoying their shows.

The show started right on time and they played for a solid 2.5 hours and a lot of time segued right into the next song. The energy Johnny has is amazing for someone nearly 70 years old. He is an inspiration and a joy to watch. Usually when the music comes on the sound system the concert is over, well this was a false alarm. I think Johnny was inspired by the love and energy he was getting in return from the audience as he played another 4 songs for an encore!

The music of Southside Johnny and his Asbury Jukes is a combination of rock, blues and soul. His vocal style is perfect for the music. He has a rough whiskey edge the puts a certain emphasis on the words for each song. 

A bonus to the band’s full sound is the amazing horn section. There is trumpet, trombone and saxophone. All three get a chance to strut their stuff separately at the front of the stage and together as well. Johnny would step to either side of the stage and grab a mic to finish out a song and let his boys cut lose.

 

Special nods go to the guitar player Glenn Alexander and the keyboard man Jeff Kazee, who has an amazing voice. When he would sing solo or with Johnny it was a treat for everyone’s ears. The band also did a really good job with some cover tunes like the Stone’s “Time Waits For No One.” This the true test of a great band. To take another band’s classic songs and make it their own while it remains very recognizable to your audience, that is something special. That is real talent and resilient musicianship. Speaking of musicianship, Johnny can play that harmonica! At times, it sounded like a locomotive flying down the tracks. He was just so focused and in a groove. The man has the blues in his soul and that is a fact!

I must not forget all the entertainment value that was on display. Johnny can tell a story and he is very humorous. Keeping it light is right in line with all the upbeat and energetic music they present. All around it was a great night for everyone. For me, The Colonial is my destination to go hear all the great bands I know and remember. They have consistently presented great shows ever since the venue reopened after the renovation. I do not see any end to that thank the Lord!

Legendary guitar slinger Kenny Wayne Shepard and his band invaded the cozy confines of The Egg in Albany NY last night.  I had been to the venue one time before and enjoyed the intimacy and atmosphere not mention the unique architecture, outside and inside.

The seating there is terrific, there is not really a bad seat in the house. Although I was positioned in the center I was in the very last row. Even though that may seem too far back I was fine with my seats and could see everything going on without any issue. The sound folks were right behind us and graciously gave me the set list before leaving.

Sly Fox and The Hustlers warmed up the receptive crowd before Kenny arrived. They are local to Albany and have their own album out. We heard some originals and they also did some covers, like most blues bands. I thought they were exceptional. The crowd did as well and gave them a good send off before the lights came back on for a short break.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd is one of those young phenom’s I remember when he first started. Right out the gate his name was stamped into the souls of all blues rock oriented followers. He has done nothing but gain notoriety in the passing years and ultimately the respect of his peers. The admiration from the community you are in is one of stepping stones to being recognized and a path to stardom. It didn’t take Kenny long to get there.

If you are in the mood for a show that has a band onstage that knows how to play traditional blues properly with rock mixed in then you need to get your tickets to see KWS. I mean this band smokes!

I had never been to one of Kenny’s concerts but knew it would be a must for anyone that loves the blues. By the time the evening was through I felt like I just saw the Hendrix incarnate!  He has one of the tightest bands and one that includes another legend in his own right, Chris Layton on drums. He held down the rhythm section for Stevie’s Ray Vaughan’s band and from that point his name was written in stone.

Kenny and his band also have a new album out titled Lay It On Dow. They gave the audience a good taste of that featuring several songs. It certainly made an impression as they were lining up to buy the CD after the show (including me). It is a very rootsy blues rock oriented set of songs and that country influence is heard in some tracks as well. Of course, that is where the roots sound comes in. It’s that blend of blues and country that forms into a superb musical gumbo. Kenny and his band wear it well.

Noah Hunt handles a lot of lead singing and he switches off with Kenny depending on what song they are doing. They both have good voices however Noah’s vocal timbre is deep and just right for this kind of music. Many times, during the evening he reminded me of Paul Rogers however when I listened to the CD on the way home I did hear that, which I found interesting. Therein lies the difference between a live and studio performance. And speaking of that difference, this band is so good that they nail their studio tracks spot on. And to the delight of the audience, plenty of improvisation and wailing away is provided by Mr. Shepherd. 

Favorites of the night were “Heat of the Sun,” “Blue on Black” and an amazing rendition of  “Voodoo Child.”

This was a night to remember for me and I am sure for everyone in attendance there. KWS has earned his seat amongst the great guitar heroes of our generation and I would expect to see him continue to gain fans. The man is only 40 so he has at least another 40 years or more left before hanging it up, if he ever does. Most blues players play until the cannot anymore or simply pass away. I know one thing for certain, this six-string bandit will be entertaining audiences long after I leave this planet. 

The music of KWS reaches out to everyone and any barriers that were in place outside the venue in daily life melt away instantly. It makes me wonder…if we piped in music on every city street across the world if it would change the attitudes of people and make it a better place? It’s worth a try.

Kona, Hawaii – Blues Rap duo NOWELO (pronounced no-VEH-lo) is releasing their new single “PASSING DAYS” featuring ANN HOKU LYN on August 18th, and celebrating with a release party featuring a nine-piece band presented by KONA WINE MARKET at The Edible World on August 26th, 2017. “PASSING DAYS” is the first single from their EP of the same name releasing later this fall. The release party event will feature Chef Noah Hester and special guest performer Reggie Griffin, as well as live artwork by Robert Thomas.

NOWELO is a musical duo formed in 2015 consisting of guitarist and blues harmonica player Truth Musiq from East Palo Alto in California’s Bay Area, and Rapper/Singer Pana Jones from Kona, Hawaii. Although the group is based in Kona, they have a sound that connects with audiences from around the world. Their music resonates with a sonic inspiration that spans Hip Hop, Blues, Reggae and even some Island influences. Nowelo has created a unique series of releases that will start with the new “PASSING DAYS” single, featuring ANN HOKU LYN.

Pana Jones was born and raised in Kona, Hawaii, growing up exposed to both modern and ancient island music. He developed a love for melodic chants and Polynesian drumming, while also being influenced by a variety of Rap and Blues music, and started writing and rhyming his way around his island home. Truth Musiq was born and raised in Northern California. Truth spent years as a street musician in Santa Cruz with a wide variety of musical influences ranging from the Beastie Boys to Robert Johnson, and he eventually made his way across the country to Jacksonville, FL.

The two joined forces, and in middle of 2016 NOWELO released their debut single “Leave Me,” a blues rap song about coping with loss. The track was released under their own label which is aptly called Mind Matters Music, founded by NOWELO with Sterling Leatherman, also originally from Palo Alto, California. Sterling is God-Brother to Truth and an avid listener of Hip Hop who now lives in Hawaii and owns KONA WINE MARKET, a landmark business in Kona for over 25 years.

ANN HOKU LYN was raised in the Marshall Islands with a love of the trumpet. She spent ten years in NYC touring as a freelance trumpet player around the US, Asia, and in Europe.
Ann continues to write and record with various jazz and pop artists, having played Madison Square Garden and Jazz at Lincoln Center. She is an integral part of the sound on NOWELO’S new “PASSING DAYS” single and EP.

The PASSING DAYS EP, set to release in November 2017, exercises elements of rap, jazz, folk, and island blues. With melodic hooks and storytelling about relationship issues past and present, the PASSING DAYS EP comes across as relatable to a wide range of music lovers. The first single and title track will be digitally released worldwide on August 18th, 2017, followed by the August 26th performance in downtown Kona. This concert will celebrate the release of the “PASSING DAYS” single and set the stage for the forthcoming EP later this fall.

New song evokes time when Detroit burned during “Summer of Love”

Detroit - From the man who crafted such hit singles as “What I Like About You,” “Talking in Your Sleep,” and “One In A Million,” comes a new gritty blues-rock single about the riots that forever changed his hometown of Detroit in 1967. Michael Skill, who has played both bass and guitar for the power-pop rock 'n' roll band The Romantics, was a budding teenager in 1967 when five days of racially charged riots tore apart Detroit in July. When it was over, 43 people lay dead, 1,189 had been injured, more than 7,200 had been arrested and more than 2,000 buildings had been destroyed.

Skill lived on Detroit's East Side and says that although the violence took place several miles from his home, he nonetheless saw its effects up close. “I remember the National Guard right down the street from my house,” he says. “People watching the riots on TV were afraid that rioters would come into our neighborhood. People were freaked out.” The riots changed his beloved Motor City forever. “A lot of my friends' families took off for the suburbs after that,” he says, noting his family chose to stay in the city.

The riot's effects – and the fact that many of the issues they raised, from police brutality to economic decay – stayed with Skill, culminating in his desire to write “67 Riot.” Loud, powerful and evocative of tough tunes by such rockers as Link Wray, Jimi Hendrix and Skill's fellow Detroit rockers, The MC 5, “67 Riot” is both a haunting look at the past as well as a timely allusion to the present, in a world where racial and social tension still threaten to rend our nation in two.

“I wrote the song from a sense of frustration that people never came together after the riots to really address what happened, to look each other in the eye and say, 'How can we repair this? How can we move forward?'” The song's lyrics are written from this point of view. “4 AM/Down the street/Cops roll in/With all the heat/Blind pig roaring/Kickin' their heels/Soldiers home/Just gettin' real,” the song opens. “Rooftop sniper/Set the sight/Burning cocktails/Flash in flight/Broken city/Broken dreams/Things aren't always what they seem/67 Riot!”

Recorded in Skill's own studio, the song features him on guitar, bass and vocals, and also features drummer Russell Ayers, who engineered the tune. The co-producers sought to create an aural equivalent of what it was like to live through this violent time, Skill says, but he adds that he wanted the song to end on a note of hope because Detroit has rebounded in recent years.

“Try to warm your heart/Dream your dreams/Break the chain/Let's start clean,” he adds in his song, noting it’s time to break the chain of racism that has shackled generations before, during and after “67 Riot.”

Rock-Blues-World Review: Santana-Lotus (Hybrid SACD)

I want to start by saying that I am big fan of Santana and most of his musical output. I have a lot of his catalog at my immediate disposal. I have also been one of those people that believe his earlier lineups were the most original and progressive. I personally enjoy the first three albums the most, which enabled me to appreciate everything that came after that in different ways. With a new set of ears and looking inward spiritually, I would consider what he was presenting. When he started getting more commercial is when many people may have lost interest. I think I have heard one album that I thought was mediocre in over 30 years, so not a bad track for my listening tastes. This is my preference and opinion of course. To each his own as they say.

Anyone familiar with Santana knows about Lotus. As notated on the Audio Fidelity site: Lotus is a 1974 live album by Santana, recorded at the Osaka Koseinenkin Hall, Osaka, Japan in 1973. It was originally released in 1974 as a triple vinyl LP in Japan only. 

A little history regarding the release as follows:

The first U.S. release was in 1991 as a 2-CD set. Lotus has been re-issued on vinyl in the Netherlands and on CD in Japan in 2006 as a 3-CD set. It was also re-issued as a 3-LP set in the U.S. in 2013, and as a 3-CD hybrid SACD with seven previously unreleased bonus tracks in 2017 (a very high priced set). So, it is safe to say this recording has gone through several iterations since its inception a and has stood the test of time as one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. 

Now we have the superb version issued by Audio Fidelity, a two-disc Hybrid SACD that brings the concert to life with a crisp robust remastered take on the legendary performance. Santana Mark II was a continuation of the Mark I sound that was a melting pot of Latin-World-Rock-Blues-Jazz Music.  It was extremely innovative and one of the progenitors to the World Music that would arrive in the future. Some of the players switched seats however their sound remained intact and this release proves out that fact repeatedly.

Santana has influenced many musicians over the years however it is the early distinctly original rock fusion he presented that paved the way too many inroads into music then and today. I got into the early Santana music after I had already absorbed Return to Forever, Al DiMeola, Jean Luc-Ponty etc. So, for my journey it was a logical transition and very enjoyable I might add. 

Santana was like Hendrix, melding several genres and effects and taking his six-string to new heights. You could only experience that in a live setting and Lotus captures some incredible moments that were never reproduced again. His sound is very distinct and you know it when you hear it.

Audio Fidelity has been one of the anchor labels for special edition CDs and LP’s for many years now. This is the second run of the Lotus Hybrid SACD, which comes as no surprise. They release great titles with unmatched packaging and sound. As always I suggest getting your copy before they disappear.

Whether you’re a musician, producer, collector or audiophile, there is something here to appreciate for everyone. Lotus is a truly iconic release honored in the most prolific way possible by Audio Fidelity.

Track Feature: Angie and the Deserters - 17 Days

Angie and the Deserters quickly became one of my favorite listens last year. That trend most definitely is continuing in this new year.

Their latest EP You is chock full of Americana treats peppered with the spice of the blues and the punch of rock and pop.

"17 Days" features Angie and the band in fine form with a full head of steam. They offer up the fine vocals and the excellent musicianship their fans have come to appreciate.

This fan loves the music and the voice on every track I have heard from this fresh and energetic outfit. Check out the great guitar playing along with the tight rhythm section that is a constant compliment to Angie.

Listen, love it, live it, then listen again!

"Misery Road" gives you windshield wipers for your tears. Man, what kind of car comes equipped like that? What a great line from the song!

As usual I enjoyed the music, in fact I think the entire Fat Lot of Good is a truckload of musical entertainment.

Texas Bluesman REVEREND KM WILLIAMS Proves That He’s The Real Deal On A Brand New Album!

Los Angeles, CA - The Reverend KM Williams is a true blues genius and a fast rising star in old school Texas Boogie Blues, carrying on the traditions of the great Texas bluesmen such as Lightnin’ Hopkins and Blind Lemon Jefferson. Raised in Red River county of East TX, Williams played his very first guitar licks as a mere toddler sitting in the lap of the great Elmore James. From that auspicious beginning, Williams built his musical chops in church performances steeped in gospel and R&B. Though he plays several kinds of guitar, the most distinctive instrument in his arsenal is an electrified Diddley bow, a fretless one-string instrument that has its origins in African slaves who fashioned a string of bailing wire to a wood plank and a hallowed out gourd, which when played with a bottle produced the familiar sounds of a blues slide guitar. You can hear both the Diddley bow and Williams’s distinctive baritone voice on his newest album, The Real Deal Blues, set to be released on October 14 by Cleopatra Blues. Williams enthusiastically proclaims that this album is “a totally unique blues recording that is both very modern and retro at the same time. This is the most amazing CD I have ever done!”

Williams is also the subject of “The Real Deal Blues,” an extraordinary new short film. Shot by Jay Gillian in the Deep Ellum area of Dallas, a historic blues district where Blind Lemon himself used to busk, this documentary tells Williams’s story while simultaneously telling the story of Texas blues through narration as well as electrifying performances of Williams and his band members, including drummer Washboard Jackson and Blues Music Award-winning harmonicist Deacon Jeff Stone. True to the blues tradition, the stages are modest, sparse, with nary a dance choreographer, Marshal stack or pyrotechnic in sight, yet the performances are no less riveting. This is authentic blues music played with passion and purpose. As Williams himself puts it, “If you want to make money, you need to become a pop musician, not a blues musician. This music is about life and it’s about feeling and about expressing those feelings and having people digging what your doing.”

Blues Rock Review: Foghat-Under The Influence

Foghat is one of those bands that I have a history with. I feel a lot of excitement and anticipation when they are getting ready to release some new material. I go back to the early days of the 70s when I discovered them in Don Kirschner’s Rock Concert. I distinctly remember Lonesome Dave singing “Honey Hush.”

The first time I heard Under The Influence I was immediately impressed with their spot on combination of traditional blues combined with hard driving rock. There are many examples of that process they have down so well on this album.

The lead off and title track kicks the door open (or should I say kegs filled with vinyl) in a way only Foghat can. Working in their fifth decade of making great music, Foghat still has the engines running full steam ahead and the midnight oil burning.

“Ghost” is the first real killer track after the boys tear it up on the first two tracks and warm up your seat. One of the trademarks of this band is the slide guitar and this one track cements that expertise and fiery sound. The combination of blues and rock, the thumping bass and drums and stinging lead lines and their blistering guitars sound like a blazing fire of music. Bryan Bassett and special guests like Scott Holt and Kim Simmonds make for a real blues rock festival!

“Upside of Lonely” carries with it the irony and comedy that the blues can deliver. Besides having a foot stompin’ riff to push along the perfected made for the blues vocals of Scott Holt, it’s a real cooker and one of my favorites because it made me smile and kept the mood rocking.    

When it comes to catchy riffs I think “Heart Gone Cold” hits the bullseye. This is a get down and get funky rocker with all the lyrics to boot. Foghat does not get any better than this track it’s as simple as that. All of their best is rolled into this one track. To put the icing on the cake and close out the show, they perform an updated version of their classic and most famous track “Slow Ride.” I think it was a good idea as this particular lineup has been together long enough to justify rebooting some of the more famous music. If you want to get an idea of what this band sounds like live, this jam will give you some perspective, yes indeed they can still kick some ass!

If you want to get your motor running and restore your faith in the church of rock ‘n’ roll and a some of its best known disciples (or should I say rock ‘n’ roll outlaws), then check out this excellent studio recording by Foghat titled Under The Influence. This is a very strong effort that is consistent from start to finish. There are no surprises and you get what you came for with this band, straight ahead blues rock with an attitude. There is complete understanding of what the “influence” is and that is a good thing in this case.

Smile Lonesome Dave wherever you are, I think Roger Earl and his mates have preserved the Foghat sound and kicked it up another notch on this one.
