FEATURING AN UN-BROADCAST TV SESSION OF LIFETIME FOR BEAT CLUB IN 1970 & ALL THE SURVIVING BBC RADIO & TV SESSION RECORDINGS & APPEARANCES, INCLUDING TWO CONCERTS SCREENED BY THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST IN 1975 & 1981.

ALL NEWLY REMASTERED & RESTORED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES. INCLUDES AN ILLUSTRATED BOOK WITH ESSAY.

The set features all the surviving BBC radio and television appearances made by Jack between 1970 and 2001, along with a wonderful un-broadcast session recorded for the German TV show Beat Club by Lifetime (also featuring Tony Williams, John McLaughlin and Larry Young) filmed around the time of the album “Turn it Over”.

The BBC material includes two legendary In Concert recordings. The first concert dates from 1971 (with friends Chris Spedding, Graham Bond, John Marshall and Art Themen) and is included in its entirety with the full 18-minute version of “Powerhouse Sod” presented on CD for the first time, the second concert dates from 1977 and features the band Jack assembled for the “How’s Tricks” album. Also featured are both audio and video recordings of the 1975 Old Grey Whistle Test special concert with Jack’s band featuring Carla Bley, Mick Taylor, Ronnie Leahy and Bruce Gary. The set also includes a concert from 1981 recorded for The Old Grey Whistle Test, a TV appearance from 1982 and the complete Jazz in Britain sessions from 1971 and 1978 featuring Jack Bruce, Jon Hiseman and John Surman, along with a session for Later with Jools Holland from 2001.

“Smiles & Grins” is the most comprehensive collection of Jack’s broadcast sessions ever released and it includes an illustrated booklet and essay – a fitting celebration of the musical legacy of Jack Bruce, a much-missed master of his craft.

Bass icon Jeff Berlin will be releasing a new tribute album to legendary Jack Bruce titled “Jack Songs” on August 2, 2022! Jack Bruce, best known for his work with classic rock group Cream as well as his critically acclaimed solo work passed away in 2014. Jeff Berlin, who has been called “the greatest bass player in the world”, was a personal friend of Jack’s and wanted to record his songs in remembrance of how Jack helped Jeff to find his own musical path.

Says Jeff, “Recording the music of Jack Bruce has been the most emotional recording project of my career. Jack was the greatest bass influence I ever had. In the center of his music were these strange and wonderful bass lines weaving in and out of the key, reaching for resolutions and finding them, again, and again. Jack’s playing was a living evolving improvisation.

Jack was the Alpha and Omega for me. I never would have become the bass player I became if I didn't hear his unfettered improvisations and innovations, his creating a completely original bass tone, and his playing every gig as if it was his last. When he died, I immediately set out to honor him by reviewing his music to choose some of my favorite songs of his and recording them via my own musical vision. As was his legacy of musical brilliance, I wanted this record to be brilliant to honor his spirit. He really means this much to me.

‘Jack Songs’ isn’t a cover CD, not in the literal sense. Except for a couple of tunes from his Cream period (arranged in ways that should surprise people) most of the songs on this CD come from other periods in Jack’s musical life after Cream. Jack’s solo career represented a multitude of musical styles. This recording will be a new revamp of some of those songs, some of the best music that I heard from one of the greatest musicians of the last fifty years.

In arranging the music, I was inspired by Giles Martin’s production of The Beatles ‘Love’ CD. His production work on this CD is fantastic. I tried to follow his example of his fitting various Beatle song quotes from different tunes into each tune by doing a similar thing by combining different Jack songs. Rather than computerized manipulation of music that was already recorded, I arranged the music so that each song on ‘Jack Songs’ would end up as an individual work comprised of various parts of other songs in them. I never would have thought of this without Giles showing me this path.”

Clearwater, FL - Bass icon Jeff Berlin will be launching a Pledge Music Campaign on August 18th for a new tribute album to legendary Jack Bruce titled “Jeff Berlin Plays Jack Bruce: Songs For A Wailer”! Jack Bruce, best known for his work with classic rock legends Cream, as well as his critically acclaimed solo work, sadly passed away in 2014. Jeff Berlin, who has been called “the greatest bass player in the world”, was a personal friend of Jack's and felt the time was right for a tribute.

Says Jeff, “Recording the music of Jack Bruce will be the most emotional recording project of my career. Jack was the greatest musical influence I ever had. As an impressionable 14 year old bass player, I was stunned by Cream, literally in awe of the music that came from them. And, in the center of the music were these strange and wonderful bass lines weaving in and out of the key, reaching for resolutions and finding them, again, and again. Jack’s playing was a living evolving improvisation. I simply never heard a bass player that had the breadth of originality like Jack had. In fact, I still haven’t!

“ 'Jeff Berlin Plays Jack Bruce: Songs for a Wailer!' isn’t a cover CD, not in the literal sense. Except for a couple of tunes from his Cream period (arranged in ways that should surprise people) most of the songs on this CD come from other periods in Jack’s musical life before and after Cream. Jack's solo career represented a multitude of musical styles, so many in fact that his career reminded me of that famous quote from Forrest Gump: You never knew what you were going to get. This recording, to me, will be a new revamp of some of those songs, some of the best music that I heard from one of the greatest musicians of the last fifty years.”

He has recorded for vocalists Patti Austin and kd Lang; he has traversed the progressive rock realm with former YES members Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe and is the only electric bassist to have played with jazz pianist Bill Evans. Jeff famously turned down an offer to join rockers VAN HALEN. Jeff is also hailed outside the usual musician ranks: Actor Gary Sinise (also a bassist) is one of his biggest fans, and renowned boxing trainer and ESPN commentator Teddy Atlas refers to Jeff as “the best in the business.” Jaco Pastorius considered Berlin a better soloist than he was. John is a gold and platinum record producer/musician/engineer with over 100 recordings produced for major and independent record labels as well as TV and film. He has worked in all genres including rock, pop, jazz and classical/opera. John is also a former EMI Music Group Executive as Head of A&R/Staff Producer for EMI Music/Blue Note Label Group. There he worked with Norah Jones, Amos Lee, Rosanne Cash, Diana Ross, Sarah Brightman, Anouska Shankar (daughter of Ravi and half sister of Norah Jones), Robert Glasper and many others. John is currently spearheading guitar legend Allan Holdsworth’s Tales from the Vault PledgeMusic campaign. Rock Review: Jack Bruce-Silver Rails

Jack Bruce had not released a solo album in ten years and more recently the man came so close to death that it is was a miracle he survived. We can now enjoy his latest work Silver Rails.

His last solo album was More Jack Than God in 2003, which I had the pleasure of covering and I gave it a 5/5 star rating. 2008’s collaboration with Robin Trower and Gary Husband Seven Moons, was nice return to form however there has been 5 year gap since that release arrived. That space has now been forgotten and filled as we move into a new era for the legendary bass player and vocalist. He is another one of those old rockers that is now 70 and still able to create vital music. Even though I refer to him as a rocker his roots are in blues and jazz and his music always mirrors that but he knows how to make it rock!

A list of guest stars populates this excellent recording. Phil Manzanera, Robin Trower, John Medeski, Cindy Blackman Santana, Bernie Marsden, Uli Jon Roth, Malcolm Bruce and many more. Some lyrics were penned by Cream lyricist Pete Brown, long-term collaborator Kip Hanrahan and Jack's wife Margrit.

This is the kind of album that will grow on you with each listen. Bruce’s voice is so unique and recognized that it seems he is a hands down success no matter what he does, much like his former band mate Mr. Clapton.

“Reach for the Night” is one of my favorites and it clocks in at a hefty 6:19. This is a track that puts on display the complexity and preciseness of a Bruce composition. The musicianship is outstanding as one would expect. Is the track too long or a bit over the top? Absolutely not and the length is just right for what they get accomplished. “Keep It Down” is the bluesy number that old cream fans would crave and it gets the job done in typical Bruce like fashion. 

“Hidden Cities” and “Rusty Lady” are standouts as well. The tracks have you travelling down a road of musicality and deeply soulful emotions as all of that reverberates through the music and words. “No Surrender” is the curtain closer and does it ever leave with bang. I would venture to say this is one of the best tracks that Bruce has recorded in a mighty long time. It is the perfect closer and anthem for a man that never gave in or gave up and the very reason he is still here turning us on with his music to this day. It kind of leaves you hanging wondering when the next track is going to start, but alas dear listeners it never happens. You will have to give it another spin and or wait for the next installment of incredible music from the music icon. That is just fine with this music fan.

It’s time to ride the Silver Rails with Jack Bruce and it’s a brilliant trip that you will want to take again, I promise you that.
