Two New Soundtracks Harness The Cinematic Power Of Prog/Space Rock Legends & Revivalists!

Features the music of Hawkwind, Nektar, Faust, Chrome, Brainticket, Rick Wakeman (Yes), Guru Freakout (with Mani Neumeier), John Wetton (Asia), Robby Krieger (The Doors), Omega, Hedersleben, and others!

Los Angeles, CA - Two very different indie films to be released later this year feature soundtracks that make unique use of prog and space rock music. First up is the thrilling action/adventure film set in the Middle East, 8 Assassins - The Beautiful, The Bad And The Ugly, which features one of the most unusual tracks in the entire oeuvre of UK prog-psych rockers Hawkwind, the haunting “Hassan-i Sabbah,” featuring Arabic singing and some brilliant violin work by Simon House. Also featured on the epic 2CD soundtrack are tracks by Hawkwind co-founder Nik Turner, a compelling live track from experimental German band Faust, prog revivalists Hedersleben, and a host of others! Meanwhile, a brand new sci-fi space horror film The Rift - Dark Side Of The Moon features loads of out-of-this-world psychedelic jams including compositions from the Pink Floyd album that inspired the film’s subtitle performed by the legendary John Wetton, XTC’s Colin Moulding as well as The Doors’ Robby Krieger. Also featured are Hungarian prog rock giants Omega as well as not one but two bands featuring avant garde percussionist Mani Neumeier of Guru Guru. So whether you like your prog rock with a little Mid-Eastern influence or prefer the spacier side, these two soundtracks will have plenty to offer! The soundtrack for 8 Assassins will be available August 18 and The Rift soundtrack will be available September 1.

New Book By Douglas Harr “Rockin' The City of Angels” Feat. Stunning Images & Memorabilia of Led Zeppelin, Queen, David Bowie, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, The Who, Yes and Others!

Celebrates incredible performances by Led Zeppelin, Queen, David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Genesis, Heart, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, The Who, Yes!

London - Concert culture in Los Angeles, the City of Angels, in the 1970s had all the lush opulence of theater, the virtuosic chops of a classical performance, and the edge-of-your-seat excitement of rock n’ roll. First-time author, and lifelong music fanatic, Douglas Harr’s Rockin’ The City Of Angels: Celebrating the Great Rock Shows of the 1970s In Concert, On Record and On Film brings to life all the classic majesty in real time. This collection of over 500 stunning images is carefully culled from the premiere practitioners of fine art photography, covering a refreshingly broad cross section of 1970s iconic artists.

“The 1970s were a time when rock bands made expansive concept records with sweeping themes,” recalls author Douglas Harr. “Rock albums back then promised ‘theater of the mind,’ and their creators were inspired to mount elaborate stage shows that brought these dreams to life. I caught many of these concerts in Los Angeles. They were almost religion to me and masses of fellow concert-goers.”

RTCOA celebrates more than thirty incredible performances, including key tours by bands such as Led Zeppelin, Queen, David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Genesis, Heart, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, The Who and Yes. These myth-making moments are presented here by a hand-picked collection of brilliant images by the best photojournalists of that time, including Richard E. Aaron, Jorgen Angel, Fin Costello, Armando Gallo, Neal Preston, Jim Summaria, Lisa Tanner and Neil Zlowzower among many others. “I spent 2 years in basements, agencies, and sometimes bands' homes, combing through hundreds of slides to find the best concert photos from that time, now so long ago,” Harr shares. In addition, RTCOA includes written commentary reflecting on these legendary concerts with reviews of the best concert video documents filmed during the era.

This 396-page book is thoughtfully divided into three sections. “Rock Gods & Entertainers” features bands like The Who, Stones, Zep, Tull, Bowie, Queen, and AC/DC. “Shamans, Storytellers, and Mellow Rockers” explores the concerts of Genesis, Yes, Cat Stevens, Eagles, Heart, Supertramp, Kansas, and more. Lastly, “Virtuosos & Classic Rockers” brings to life performances by ELP, King Crimson, ELO, Dixie Dregs, Kate Bush and many of their peers. This is the perfect gift for those who were there—or wish they were there—for that magical time.

Harr is a staff writer for Gonzo Weekly magazine, part of the Gonzo Multimedia label in England. In addition, he has contributed articles and photographs to Expose Magazine and Something Else Reviews in the U.S. His writings and photos are also captured in his weekly blog at diegospadeproductions.com. He is an aficionado of progressive and classic rock music from the early 1970’s and a frequent concert patron who has attended more than 400 shows during his lifetime. He was classically trained on the piano for seven years before transitioning to college and full-time “music patron” status. Besides music publications, Harr’s written work is also featured in technology books, including CIO Perspectives and Data Insights: New Ways to Visualize and Make Sense of Data, and in his blog on music and technology Alternative IT. All this has been a part of a 30-plus year career as a technology executive and patron of the rock ‘n’ roll arts.

This coffee-table book is nearly the size of an LP album cover, 396 pages, over 500 images, written by Douglas Harr, designed by Tilman Reitzle. Foreword by Armando Gallo.

Customers pre-ordering before December 20 will receive a signed commemorative postcard which can be used as a gift, just in time for the season.

Release Date: 13th January 2017

Macon, GA - Blind producer Joey Stuckey, the official Music Ambassador for his hometown of Macon, Georgia—a true music city—has released an all-female musical compilation, “Joey Stuckey Presents Ladies of the South”, that encompasses twelve incredible artists that he has produced over the past 6 years.

Stuckey's roster of musical legends with whom he has worked includes Alan Parsons, Chuck Leavell, Jimmy Hall, The B-52s, Mike Mills (REM), Trisha Yearwood, Hughie Thomasson (Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Outlaws), and many others.

The decision to release this compilation was made after Stuckey's co-writing the album's feature song “What You See Ain’t What You Get” with Charlie Hoskyns (The Popes), Will Morrison (Modern English), and Paul McGuinness (The Pogues). Says Stuckey, “We wrote this amazing song about incredibly strong women and loved it so much that we had to record it. We chose long-time friend and Georgia treasure Sue Wilkinson (aka Sue Lu) to perform the lead vocals on this track. We needed the attitude of Janis Joplin and the vocal chops to go with it and Sue was the perfect woman to bring the song to life. After 'What You See Ain't What You Get' was completed, I realized that I knew and had worked with so many amazing female artists across all genres that it was time to share that talent and 'Joey Stuckey Presents Ladies of the South' was born.”

Whether you are a fan of rock, pop, singer/songwriter, country, or contemporary Christian, this compilation has it all!

The artists and songs included in this southern exposé are:

  1. The Shadow Bandits featuring Sue Lu “What You See Ain't What You Get”
  2. Kim Meeks “Everybody’s Pretty”
  3. Hugh Hession featuring Camille Scoggins & Sue Tomlin “Start Over”
  4. Someday Merry featuring Eline Chavez “With You”
  5. Vanessa Moses “Danish Cookies Is My Name”
  6. Tyler Moore featuring Camille Scoggins “Box Labeled Questions”

Psychedelic Rock Review: Psych Box-Various Artists

Release Date: 19th February 2016
Label: Cleopatra
Psych Box is a 5 CD box set of treasures, and within the 77 tracks included, you can settle back to hear the old and the new and visit such areas as ambient, mellow kraut rock, indie and space rock.

Initially I was concerned as to how to approach such a review with the sprawling nature of the contents and the sheer number of bands/tracks, but as I have always been told, the best place to start is with the beginning, so off we go with Disc 1.

The opening disc of the Psych Box has 15 tracks and a running time of around 66 minutes. Highlights that I discovered as I relaxed and listened to the disc were, “Going To Hell” (2:58) by The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Black Angels doing a version of The Doors song, “Soul Kitchen” (3:31) and “Damien” (6:19) by The Legendary Pink Dots. These three tracks are indeed the opening tracks to Disc 1 and with such luminaries as Hawkwind and Brainticket included in the remaining tracks, the question is, “What’s not to like?” As with all the discs in the set, brace yourself for the varied, the interesting and the very quirky.

The second disc in the Psych Box has 16 tracks and a total running time of around 71 minutes. Disc 2   has stunning tracks by The Deviants, “Jamie’s Song” (3:32), the amazing Cambrian Explosion with “The Sun” (6:36) and “Big Bad Storm” (3:38) by The See See.

Psych Box Disc 3 has a total of 15 tracks and a total playing time of around 66 minutes, and within those 66 minutes I found a few beauties. The opening track is “All Tomorrow’s Parties” (4:36) by Nico, The Fresh and Onlys do a superb rendition of “In The Light” (4:44) which is a probably better known from Led Zeppelin and an epic track from a band called Electric Moon, “Spaceman” (13:12), as well as a track I didn’t recognize from The MC5, “Gold.”

The fourth disc in the Psych Box set has again 16 tracks with a playing time just over 65 minutes. I really enjoyed the sitar-drenched “Dark Peace” (3:20) by The Striped Bananas, another Led Zeppelin cover by Indian Jewelry called “Kashmir” (4:54) and “No Way Out” (2:33) by The Chocolate Watchband. Also lurking within the 65 minutes you will find a track from Nektar and The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, who are probably better remembered for the classic, “Fire.”

The final disc, Disc 5 in the Psych Box set has 15 tracks and is the shortest disc on offer, with a running time of just under 63 minutes. The amazing Iron Butterfly kicks off this disc with “Possession” (2:49) which is the original 7 inch version and a little bit shorter than the epic “In-a-gadda-da-vida.” Both Onyou with “National Strings Attached” (8:00) and The Lucid Experiment with “She’s My Melody” (3:37) are highlights I discovered among the other tracks. Throw in tracks by The Fuzztones, Nik Turner and the Raveonettes with their version of The Doors “The End” which does finish the disc and you have another collection of winning tracks.

At the outset I thought that it would be very difficult to properly review the Psych Box without writing pages and pages, but in the end it was surprisingly easy. A box set with 77 tracks, and very few examples that I did not enjoy (I only came across a couple) as well as a special price, says it all really. Over 5.5 hours of eclectic, interesting and, as I said earlier, quirky music justifies clearing a space on the CD shelving to house The Psych Box.

Editors Note: The box set include a vinyl 45 with Jimmy Page B/W Timothy Leary

5/5 Stars

Key Tracks: Black Angels/Soul Kitchen The Fresh and Onlys/In The Light, The Raveonettes/The End

Holiday Music Review: Various Artists: The Classic Christmas ‘80s Album

Release Date: October 2, 2015
Label: Legacy Recordings

It is that time of year again.  Lights, Christmas trees, wreaths, and Christmas songs, because it cannot be the Christmas season without the music.  Sony’s Legacy Recordings has put together a Christmas album full of songs from the ‘80s, and appropriately titled it The Classic Christmas ‘80s Album.  It features an assorted cast of successful ‘80s talents, including Whitney Huston, Run-D.M.C., Hall & Oates, The Pointer Sisters, and many more covering such Christmas classic as “Do You Hear What I Hear?,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” and “Run Rudolph Run” to name a few.

Opening up the album is the new wave band The Waitresses of “I Know What Boys Like” fame.  Their Christmas song, “Christmas Wrappings” has classic written all over it.  The song has a nice blend of modern and traditional and it is just so catchy and infectious from the very beginning.  Patty Donahue’s vocals are beautiful.  It is the perfect pop/post-punk holiday song.  Following it is another fantastic song, “Last Christmas” by Wham!. The sound is light and festive, making it a great choice to celebrate the holidays with.  George Michael brings his A-game on here, and it is easy to see way this song has been covered so many times over the last three decades.

Next up is The Bangles’s version of the Simon & Garfunkel’s “Hazy Shade of Winter.” I like it, as it is very good rock song with lots of energy and edge, but it is not much of a Christmas song.  One of the albums standouts is Run-D.M.C’s “Christmas in Hollis.”  It is a wonderful party song that is full of Christmas spirit, and it is not a ‘80s compilation album without some hip-hop, and who better to represent that than Run-D.M.C.  It is the right song to liven up any Christmas party and should be on everyone’s playlist.  Hall & Oates give very solid and respectful rendition of “Jingle Bell Rock.”  Whitney Huston’s version of “Do You Hear What I Hear?” makes a good case for best single on the album.  Her beautiful and powerful voice is stunning, memorable, and leaves a lasting impression after the song is over.

Billy Squier’s “Christmas Is The Time To Say 'I Love You’” has a nice rock edge to it and the energy from the crowd is electrifying. It definitely makes for a good song to get everyone singing along to. Dave Edmunds’s “Run Rudolph Run” is pretty solid, but I prefer the Chuck Berry version. Next up is “Zat You Santa Claus” from Buster Poindexter and His Banshees of Blue which adds a nice touch of jazz and lounge music sound to the album.  The Pointer Sisters’ version of “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” is the best song on the second half of the album.  It is a fun, energetic rendition with great vocal harmonies. Roy Parker Jr.’s “Christmas Time Is Here” is a calm and pleasant song. The fictional comedy duo of Bob and Doug Mackenzie give their special take of “The Twelve Days of Christmas.”  It is a fun and silly song that sounds like something your drunken relatives might start singing after too many glasses of spiked eggnog.

The album hits a speed bump with “This One’s for the Children” by The New Kids on the Block.  It is overly sentimental song that does not belong on this album.  It is not a Christmas song and not a good song in general.  Fishbone’s “Slick Nick, You Devil You” is another one that I did not care for.  The tempo is too slow and I do not like the clapping.  The Hooters finish the album off with “Silent Night.”  It is solid version of a Christmas classic and a good choice to bring everything to a close.

The Classic Christmas ‘80s Album is great album for the holidays.  The selection is varied and strong with only a miss or two against it, making for a high quality album.  This is good because it makes the ‘80s nostalgia trip an added bonus instead of its only selling point.  You cannot go wrong by adding The Classic Christmas ‘80s Album to your collection.  You might even find yourself with some new holiday favorites.
