Stockton, NJ – Formed in Germany in 1969, Nektar favored extended compositions and concept albums over the constraints of pop. Nektar’s Fortyfied Receives Definitive Re-Mastered Re-Release After Being Unavailable for 15 Years – OUT NOW!

Nektar formed in Hamburg in 1969 and is well known for iconic progressive rock albums such as A Tab in the Ocean, Remember The Future and Recycled. After four decades of successful albums and tours, the band reformed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Nektar’s formation.

The tour was recorded and released under the name Fortyfied. This live album was only briefly available on Roye Albrighton’s own label but has been unavailable for over 15 years. This is the first mainstream release of the recordings.

This re-mastered 2CD set features a line-up of Roye Albrighton, Ron Howden, Peter Pichl and Klaus Henatsch. This remastered re-release is endorsed by the relevant line-up of Nektar including the estate of Roye Albrighton.

Progressive Rock Review: Nektar-Mission To Mars

Nektar's latest edition of their storied history is Mission To Mars. With the loss of key members, the band has taken on a different sound. This is not your 70s Tab In The Ocean band anymore. I did have the opportunity to cover some of the remastered classic albums many years ago, so I remember how amazing they sounded and their comeback after many years on the shelf.

Listeners cannot expect to have one original member left and still have the same sound. Bands change, move on, and take chances, and sometimes, it is forced upon them if they want to continue, which was Nektar's scenario.

The only original musician left is Derek "Mo" Moore (bass), who now handles the vocal duties, but some longtime members are still contributing. This release is a mixture of rock and progressive. The music gets better quickly with many changes on three of the tracks, and keep in mind there are four tracks on this LP. Some good parts are progressive but not what longtime fans would expect to hear.

Side one begins with a rock and blues-tempered title track, "Mission To Mars," which you expect to be prog, but it's not at first. Once it started, I thought they sounded like today's Cactus (with the gruff-edged vocals), which threw me off until things moved along more. There are some substantial lead guitar parts and good harmonizing. A cool keyboard comes in at the midpoint; it becomes more of a jam with excellent instrumentation. Musically, some prog elements towards the end sounded more like the band I remembered. The vocals are not top-notch, but to be fair, they are adequate and have room for improvement. In any event, it turns into a strong track.

"Long Lost Sunday" starts with a mellow riff as the bass and drums jump right in, then it changes with more energy as the guitar chords start getting thicker, and then it goes back to mellow again. Some nice keys enter the mixture with layers and take a very progressive direction with more change to a more rhythmic riffing, and then the bass/drums follow as the vocals are steady and match all these shifts in direction musically. Then, it goes to a heavier sound and again transfers over, rotating the three significant changes you will hear in the composition. It is very complex and impressive. As you get closer to the end of the side, a strong bass chimes in with a sharp lead guitar as it changes one last time. Now it's time to flip the platter over to side two.

Side two starts with "One Day Hi One Day Lo," which has an excellent orchestral beginning like you may hear on a movie soundtrack or documentary. Then, a heavy bass starts as the drums follow. A superb guitar gets your attention as the vocals begin. You hear some good harmonizing, something they do well consistently. A slower pace is now in place, and a more defined guitar. Some pedal effects and stinging leads grab you. It changes to a more straight-ahead rocker, then another quick shift, sounding more like a pop-rock commercial band than prog rockers, which was interesting with a prominent bass to remind you who you are listening to. Harmonizing happens again, and then a funky bass makes things more interesting. A good keyboard section, then an uplifting guitar part featuring some speedy playing, is impressive. They show off their chops often on this recording, which I appreciated.

"I'll Let You In" closes things out softer, with the acoustic guitar beginning this slow mover. Then, a more upbeat electric guitar comes in, with some good rhythm and harmonizing. The music quality is high-level, with some sophisticated playing; however, this track should have started side two so they could have ended the album with more intensity and excitement with "One Day Hi One Day Lo."

A richer sound makes up for the weaker lead vocals when this band sings together. The musicianship, as I have mentioned several times, is beyond reproach. If Nektar gets a different lead singer with a more robust and precise set of pipes, their direction will improve. An entirely new audience will be waiting to embrace them, and then getting longtime fans back on board may also happen. The older fans, including myself (although it is good music), may consider Mission To Mars mediocre compared to their earlier catalog.

First released in October 1975, Nektar’s “Recycled” was a conceptual work about the concerns of the impact of pollution and environmental damage to the earth and was recorded at the Chateau d’Herouville in France and at AIR Studios in London with sessions engineered by Geoff Emerick.

The album was also significant for the guest appearance of synthesizer player Larry Fast (of Synergy, who was later to work with Peter Gabriel). “Recycled” became another hit in Germany and the USA and spawned a long US and Canadian tour. The message of the album is arguably more pertinent than it was at the time of its original release and remains one of Nektar’s most highly regarded works.

This new 5CD edition features a newly remastered version of the album along with two rare single edits, a discarded early mix of the album by Geoff Emerick and an additional three CDs of live recordings from concerts at Massey Hall, Toronto and Calderone Concert Hall in Long Island on the band’s 1976 “Recycled” tour. The set also features an illustrated book and is a fine celebration of a progressive rock classic.

Prog Legends Nektar To Release “Journey To The Other Side - Live At The Dunellen Theatre June 10, 2023” Through Deko Entertainment As A Fitting Tribute To Late Drummer & Founding Member Ron Howden

As they begin the next 50 years of their career, they kick it off with “Journey to the Other Side – Live at The Dunellen Theatre June 10, 2023.” Recorded during the band’s 50th anniversary tour, this release captures the band in all their glory with a 2CD/Blu-Ray set with a 5-camera shoot and multi-track recording. Clocking in at over 2 and 1/2 hours and spanning the band’s entire career with classics like “Remember the Future Parts 1 & 2,” “A Tab in the Ocean,” and many more.

This recording has become a virtual remembrance of Nektar drummer and primary member, Ron Howden, who died suddenly at the ripe old age of 78 on September 29th, 2023. As founding member Derek “Mo” Moore states, “I think you will enjoy being part of Nektar’s 50th extended Anniversary Tour and glad we captured this performance. Rest in Peace Ron.”

The band is currently hard at work on their forthcoming trilogy “Mission To Mars.” The first installment is scheduled to hit in early June to coincide with the band’s tour which kicks off in New Jersey on June 7th.

First released in November 1973, the album was a conceptual piece comprising a musical cycle divided into two parts and was recorded at Chipping Norton Studios in England. “Remember the Future” became the band’s most successful album, being a chart hit in Germany, but also reaching number 13 on the US Billboard charts without the band having ever toured America. It was a pivotal album for the band and broke them to a wider audience and remains one of Nektar’s most well-known and highly regarded works.

This 50th Anniversary edition comprises 4 CDs and a multi-region Blu Ray disc and features a newly remastered original stereo mix of the album along with and additional two CDs featuring a previously unreleased concert recorded at the Stadthalle, Munster, Germany in January 1974 and stunning new 5.1 Surround Sound and Stereo mixes of the album from the original multi track tapes. Also included on the Blu ray disc are the original 1973 Quad mix and additional video content comprising of the rare “Remember the Future” promotional film, the film of “Wings” shown on BBC TVs Old Grey Whistle Test and a live performance of “Desolation Valley / Waves” for the same TV show.

Drummer Mark Murdock To Release 3rd Solo Album “False Readings” Featuring Prog Legends Nektar

“False Readings” is drummer Mark Murdock’s third solo prog-rock release which features Fernando Perdomo, whom Mark performed with in the ‘Out to Sea Band’ on the 2022 Cruise to the Edge. Also contributing on selected songs are recurring guest artists from the band ‘Nektar’ with Ron Howden, Derek ‘Mo’ Moore and Nektar newcomers, Ryche Chlanda and Kendall Scott.

Mark says, “‘False Readings’ comes after the release of two experimental in my Cymbalic Encounters catalog; ‘Overexposure’ and ‘Cerulean Cathedral.’ There may be traces of these works on some elements of the music, as some of the material was composed near the same time frame, while offering some new dimensions to my works.

Nektar “...Sounds Like Swiss” Live in Switzerland 1973 CD/DVD Available October 1, 2021

Unearthed audio and video recordings from legendary progressive rock band Nektar captured live in Switzerland, 1973. Includes an hour-long concert videotaped for Swiss TV's Kaléidospop, unseen since its original broadcast. The two CDs include the audio portion of the TV show as well as a complete show soundboard audio recording from the Pavilion des Sports in Lausanne, Switzerland in May 1973.

Housed in a beautiful 4 panel digipak, this CD/DVD set is an epic, historical document showcasing the bands early innovative and pioneering sound that remains as vital and influential as ever.

Booklet includes liner notes by bassist and founding members Derek “Mo” Moore and Mick Brockett. The band’s line up for these legendary performances in fact features all five original members - the late Roye Allbrighton on guitar and vocals, Derek “Mo” Moore on bass and vocals, Allan “Taff” Freeman on organ and vocals, and Ron Howden on drums and percussion in addition to Mick Brockett handling the visual tapestry that was such a key component of the “Music and Light Theatre” that the band was presenting at the very height of progressive rocks main sequence during the mid-70’s.

Prog Legends Nektar’s “Vinyl Sides Live” Tour to Kick Off September 2021

When the vinyl meets the road!

For more than 50 years, Nektar has taken legions of fans on audio-visual journeys to far reaches of the universe and the depths of the ocean with their immersive blend of sight and sound. These prog-rock pioneers have been champing at the bit to get back on the road and are excited to announce they will tour America’s Northeast and Midwest this autumn, with many more dates scheduled through Spring 2022.

The “Vinyl Sides Live” Tour marks Nektar’s eagerly awaited return to the road, spotlighting some of the best-loved “album sides” from their evergreen catalog, as well as 2020’s acclaimed release, “The Other Side,” plus new material. Nektar changes their live show every single night; fans love to follow along on the journey.

Founding member Mo Moore says, “After doing 31 dates at the beginning of 2020 and getting into tour shape, we were stopped in our tracks by COVID.”

The band made the most of this ‘down time’ by preparing for their upcoming tour, adding another 90 minutes of music to the 3 hours of repertoire they performed on the previous tour. Audiences will be treated to entire album sides from some of Nektar’s epic recordings – including “A Tab in the Ocean,” “Remember the Future” and “Recycled,” as well as “The Other Side.” Rounding out the shows will be expanded offerings from other albums; unfinished tunes from 1978 that the band has rediscovered; as well as brand new compositions the band has created during their weekly online and in person get-togethers.

“I think the next shows are going to be even more exciting, as we will continue our direction of not doing the same set twice if we have multiple dates at one venue or are playing two gigs that are drivable,” says Mo. “This keeps the music fresh and gives incentives to our ‘Nektarines’ to attend more than one show, knowing they will be different.”

Nektar has captured the imagination and admiration of listeners the world over with their multimedia concerts, melding a jam-band vibe with superb musicality and a visual cornucopia that perfectly complements the performance. A Nektar show is an unparalleled feast for the senses.

Formed in Germany in 1969 by British expats, Nektar soaked up the musical freedom they found in their new home, favoring extended compositions and concept albums over the constraints of pop. They were among the progenitors of the progressive rock movement of the 1970s as well as the jam-band scene that arose in the late 1990s. Their sound traveled well to the States, where they enjoyed Top 40 success with “A Tab in the Ocean” (1972) and “Remember the Future” (1973). Nearly 20 albums and a half-century later, the band’s artistic and personal charisma has earned them masses of devoted fans, who have flocked to festivals such as NearFest and ProgStock, and venues like the Wildey Theatre (where they perform multi-night sold-out shows) to indulge their passion for the Nektar experience.

Currently, Nektar features three of the original members – Derek ‘Mo’ Moore (bass guitar, vocals), Ron Howden (drums, percussion, vocals) and Mick Brockett (visual environment). Ryche Chlanda (guitar, vocals) and Randy Dembo (bass guitar, bass pedals, 12-string guitar, vocals) are alums of previous Nektar incarnations. World-class multi-instrumentalist Kendall Scott completes the lineup on keyboards; his performance credits include Project/Object and Ryche Chlanda’s Flying Dreams. They will be joined onstage by Maryann Castello on backing vocals, and Maryann will also oversee merchandise sales and VIP events.

“The whole album is a love song,” says Mo. It’s also a memorial to friends the band has lost, including fellow founding member Roye Albrighton, who passed in 2016, and their long-time sound mixer Vinny Schmid.

Mick Brockett, whose visuals are integral to Nektar performances, is upgrading his renowned light show with assistance from the band’s digital wizard, Jay Petsko. The update will incorporate additional film clips plus a rich trove of previously unseen photos of the band on and off tour.

Mick creates a visual environment that directly reflects what the band is playing on stage. “I’m like the Wizard of Oz, behind the curtain,” Mick says. “I’m ‘playing’ this all in real time.”
