Pop-Rock-Roots Rock Review: Elvis Presley-A Boy From Tupelo-The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings (3 CDs/Book)

Release Date: July 28, 2017
Label: Legacy / RCA / Sony Music

The recordings of Elvis Presley remain as pertinent today as they always have. In fact, it is likely with each passing year that their importance goes up one more notch. His position in rock music goes without saying and there are still many new fans to gain. The release of these informative box sets has shed new light on one of our greatest performers.

This rootsy original music is the second version of a A Boy From Tupelo-The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings.  The three CDs and booklet capitalizes on his never-ending popularity.

This set puts together all the known existing Elvis Presley recordings from 1953 through 1955. A massive total of 53 studio takes and 32 live performances are included. These were the Sun Years and there is even cuts the man paid for himself. At this point that sounds ludicrous but we must remember he had humble beginnings as most artists did when they first started. The priceless masters released for Sam Phillips on his iconic Memphis label feature a treasure trove of outtakes and acetates. This set can claim rights to the “complete” set of that period. It was a monumental achievement to get all this music together and remaster it. Some parts are snippets put together piece by piece.

Something needs to be said for the generous book that is included with many rare pictures. It is the story behind the music. If you enjoy reading about the history of this legend then this will be a big plus while you are listening. The 119 pages come packed with notes on the beginnings of Elvis and his early career.

The most enjoyable thing for my ears was listening to the influence of country and blues intersecting with his quickly developing style and voice. It is simplistic music at times, yet his full-bodied vocals served as a separate instrument. His contributions were just enough to really appreciate all the instrumentation as well. You have to keep in mind that recording was in its infancy in comparison to today’s high-tech tools and enhancements. His voice was very mature so early on and you could hear how and why he was a shooting star once his music hit the streets. He went from a little boy watching the choir at church and trying to sing with them to an international super star in matter of years. Stories like Elvis are not something you hear these days and honestly there are not performers like him around anymore nor anyone to challenge his continuing popularity and legacy. I am still waiting for that day to arrive although realistically I am not very confident it will.

There is a lot of music and information to absorb in A Boy From Tupelo-The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings.  It is well worth the price tag if you are Elvis fan or a general music fan curious about the early career of such a legendary performer. If you listen to the popular genre of Roots Music you will hear how some of that music started on this set. He laid down the foundation for so much as so many artists that came after him. Elvis set many precedents and this music was a real treat when I first heard it. It can be very special if you are already familiar with his catalog and diverse career path in recording. Either way, there is a lot to enjoy here for any music fan or history buff.

Featured Track: Jonathan Cavier-When You Come Around

Jonathan Cavier pays us a visit again on Rate The Tracks with a new single titled "When You Come Around."

Cavier's vocal is inviting and made for a pop-rock audience. The single is radio ready and sounds like it could be the theme song for the summer.

The instrumentation is the perfect backdrop for Cavier's backdrop. So sit back, crank it up, and listen to
"When You Come Around." It is like the songs we used to hear on the AM radio dial back in 70s and that is good thing if you are familiar with that decade of music!

Featured Stream: Brielle Von Hugel feat. B.o.B - Stronger (Exodus x Sweet & Sour Remix)

Brielle Von Hugel has a new single we are streaming. The "Stronger (Exodus x Sweet & Sour Remix)" track features the rapper B.o.B. I have never been a fan of rap however I can appreciate the difficulty and pace that you have to keep up with sing that way. I certainly could not do it, I would loose my breath and turn blue! It is an art form no doubt and it has many admirers. To be honest I liked what was presented here and thought it worked well.

Brielle has a powerful and emotional touch to the vocals she delivers. Her style and flair are a perfect match for the music, which is a mixture of pop, dance and electronica. She steps aside to let the pro B.o.B. handle the rap duties which he does with ease.

Check out the stream and the video of what inspired Brielle to sing this song. You will be able to understand the emotion and purpose that drives this track once you watch her video.

Featured Track: Bunny Sigler-Till I See You Again

The saying "They don't make them like that anymore" and "they broke the mold" applies to Bunny Sigler.

"Till I See You Again" is from his new  album Young At Heart.

Not everyone can pull off a love song like they mean it and sound so good. Bunny sounds great! He is just like fine wine, getting better as the years pass.

"Till I See You Again" is a great pop and R&B track that I can hear playing on the radio, it is tailor made for that format. It is smooth as silk and it hits you right where it counts, in the heart.

Bunny Sigler is back strong as ever so check it out now!

Featured Stream: Amilia K. Spicer - Fill Me Up

Roots Rock and Americana are really taking hold. It has been for several years and the more I hear it the more I can see why it has become so popular.

Music from artists such Amilia K. Spicer, like her track "Fill Me Up," will give you a good idea of what this music sounds like, or should sound like.

Spicer's voice has that edge country influenced music needs. The vocals gives it all more heart and soul. Truthfully, the reason I like the music so much is because it is so honest and emotional.

"Fill Me Up" comes at you locked and loaded and ready to fire away. The music is very earthy with a heavy influence from country (and I don't mean all polished with rock and pop for a looped radio playlist) just as all Americana or Roots Rock.

Check out this great music and the hypnotizing vocals of Amilia K. Spicer.

Featured Rock Stream: Roadcase Royale-Get Loud

Roadcase Royale is the side project of rock legend Nancy Wilson. She is joined by Liv Warfield (vocals), Dan Rothchild (bass), Chris Joyner (keyboards), Ben Smith (drums) and Ryan Waters (guitar).

This seasoned group of musicians are sure to make their mark on 2017 with a high energy funky sound. As an introduction they have provided "Get Loud" for a taste of what they can deliver.

I thought of Mother's Finest a few times while listening to Liv sing and the guitar lines laid down by Nancy and Ryan. With a track title like "Get Loud" you think of rock anthems. The funky rock sound is not a typical rock anthem but it sure has a lot of promise to become one, especially in a live setting. It all sounds like the perfect fit for this band and you can feel their chemistry bubbling over in the song.

Check it out now!

Concert Review: The Ten Tenors in Concert at The Colonial Theater

The Ten Tenors in Concert at The Colonial Theater
March 10, 2017
Pittsfield, Mass.

The Ten Tenors warmed up a chilled capacity crowd at The Colonial Theater in Pittsfield Massachusetts on a typical blustery winter night in the Berkshires. The crossover classical group is celebrating their 20th year with the Power of Ten Tour. The tremendously successful act has accounted for six Platinum and Gold records and performed alongside countless music legends including Andrea Bocelli, André Rieu, John Travolta, Nicole Kidman, Geoffrey Rush, Keith Urban, Rod Stewart, Alanis Morissette, Sarah Brightman, Willie Nelson, Katherine Jenkins and Christina Aguilera. It comes as no surprise to me that they have the utmost respect of music industry people all over the world.

Their set was comprised of two acts of diversity and musical excellence. The very first thing that struck me just before they opened the night was the stage lighting. The lights came shining down on the performers like rays from the heavens. The interesting thing was that it felt like musical heaven while taking in this special evening.

I was impressed with this group of men prior to attending the concert. I watched their cover of the Queen classic “Bohemian Rhapsody” on YouTube (which has over 1.2 million views and counting) and was blown away by their exceptional talent. My first thought after that was how incredible it must be to see them perform on stage! I was even more impressed once the show kicked off with another Queen staple, “We Are The Champions.”

What I was not prepared for was their implausible diversification and electric stage presence. These Australian performers know how to present any kind of music.  Their abilities to do so points to the different ranges that each vocalist commands and how they are positioned on the stage. They do have a good sense of humor as well and the choreography was spot on and always right in sync.

I think the highlights of the night for my ears were the “Jersey Boys Medley” and the encore of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Bowie’s “Heroes,” which closed out the show and gave me chills several times. I am a huge Bowie fan and always have been so this was the icing on the cake for my night.

I must tip my hat not only to the all-around performance of the ten men but the three others that provided the instrumentation, Ben Kiehne (piano), David Orr (guitar) and Trent Bryson-Dean (drums) were essential to their presentation as well. Without them it would just be voices, which would also sound wonderful. The musicians made a difference and so did the piped in orchestrations they had. Each number came together flawlessly once again proving that the most amazing instrument is the human voice. None of the extras included were necessary, they were just bonuses added to ten incredible vocalists with varying arrays of resonance.

The Ten Tenors are a guaranteed fun night for any music lover. The fact that they cover a wide expanse of genres give them a worldly appeal - from the crowd that appreciates opera to the all-encompassing lovers of pop and rock music. It all comes together for an amazing night of entertainment.

Concert Review: Let It Be A Beatles Tribute

Let It Be at The Proctor in Schenectady New York
February 18, 2017

The Beatles music is timeless and over the years they have been celebrated again and again and so has each individual member of the band for their excellent solo work. There is still a huge market for their music and anything to do with the ultra-famous Fab Four. Only two other artist rank at the top of list for worldwide album sales, Elvis and Michael Jackson.

Paul McCartney (Neil Candelora-bass/piano/vocals), John Lennon (Michael Gagliano-guitar/vocals/piano), Ringo Starr (Chris McBurney-drums/vocals) and George Harrison (JT Curtis-lead guitar/piano/vocals) are names that will live forever. Special mention goes the fifth Beatle on keyboards Daniel A. Weiss who provided some amazing orchestral parts in songs along with some tasteful keys.

There have been many knock offs of The Beatles over the years however how many could you count as being legitimate imitations of them?  I experienced a band last night that were a close facsimile to them.

Let It Be is an entire production company devoted to bringing The Beatles music and stage show to an audience that never had an opportunity to witness the original band in a live setting.

I was only 12 years old when The Beatles broke up and launched their solo careers however I did grow up listening to their music. I remember clearly as a little boy watching them on the Ed Sullivan show when they arrived in the US (or the colonies as they said last night). I can hear the girls screaming now muffling out the mop tops music and not understanding what all the fuss was about, I just wanted to hear them playing.

As the years went by I never lost my love for their music, it is something all the fans hold close to their hearts regardless of age. I saw all ages at the concert and the Proctor was packed full. It was nice to see that and what we were about to witness was fascinating.

The gents that played John and Paul, Gagliano and Candelora, had their vocals down spot on. Gagliano looked more and more like John as the night went on. It was giving me chills, especially when he sang. At first when I looked at the drummer, McBurney, I did not see much of a resemblance with Ringo but when he came out at the second half of the show with a beard he looked like a dead ringer for Mr. Starr.

The first half of the show were some of the early hits and how they transformed into what we would see at their performance in Shea Stadium and during Sgt. Pepper’s (complete with the colorful garb) and then what they looked like towards the end of their careers just before they broke up.

The second half of the show was very interesting as well. They presented The Beatles and what they would have been like if they reformed after years of their solo work had been produced.

They mixed it up well and the stage presentation was top notch. I would not hesitate to say, being a lifelong Beatles fan, that this representation of the band was excellent with a very entertaining and colorful stage show to match.

The musicianship was great and the vocals as close to the originals as anyone could expect. I highly recommend seeing Let It Be if you have the opportunity.

Featured Track: Jonathan Cavier - Comes A Moment

Jonathan Cavier has a new single out titled "Comes A Moment."

His pop-rock style and expressive vocals fill the track with passion and emotion. You can feel it as he sings "Comes a moment to let go"...

Everyone has times when they need to let something go that may be weighing things down. It can be any number of things but eventually we have to let go and move on. That is what I think this song is about and Cavier does a great job getting that message across in his music.

What else can I say? Listen the stream and watch the video and decide for yourself!

1960's Irish Pop Singer Jackie Lee aka “Jacky” Releases New Compilation Feat. Hit Single “White Horses”

1960's Irish pop singer Jackie Lee aka “Jacky”, best known for her hit song “White Horses”, has released new compilation of the same name on Gonzo MultiMedia UK.

“I never dreamt in my wildest dreams that when I was asked by Ben Nisbett and Michael Carr if I would like to sing a little song they had written for hopefully a new TV series about White Horses that it would become so popular. I of course said I would be delighted to do so. I then went to Ben's office in Tin Pan Ally (Denmark Street, London) as it was known and heard the song and saw the lyrics for the first time. I must say I fell in love with it. We then set the key for the arranger and a week or so later I was in the rather small studio to put my voice to the arrangement that had already been recorded. It was then I decided to make something of this sweet little song. As there were about two tracks left, I used them to double track my voice and put in the harmonies which I knew would work well for the song. Lucky for all of us it was accepted for the TV series and voila, a little gem was born.

“I am quite astounded that my recording of the White Horses theme song is still remembered so fondly and played on the radio so regularly. So many people have written to me personally to recall all the happy memories they remember as children about the series and my recording. After so many enquiries I am delighted that this album has been released with the White Horses recording and tracks from my White Horses LP along with some other favourites of mine.

“It includes one track that has never been released before which was part of an album that I created with Christopher Gunning called Calendar which was very dear to my heart. The Busker was about April showers, the album was never released and to date and The Busker is the only track known to have survived.

“I have also chosen several recordings I made as part of the Raindrops,  a vocal quartet with my ex Husband Len Beadle, Vince Hill and Johnny Worth.  They all went on to make their own individual contributions to popular music.” - Jackie Lee

Tracks:
White Horses (Stereo)
I can Sing a Rainbow
Things I don't mean
Well, that's loving you
We're Off and Running
I think I like you
Scarlet Ribbons
Who's afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?
Out of sight, out of mind
Too Many Chiefs and not enough Indians
I Cry Alone

Will You Love Me Tomorrow
There goes the lucky one
Here I go again

The Locomotion
The End of the World

Jackie Lee is an Irish popular music singer, who has recorded under various names. Lee was a musical child prodigy who became a vocalist with the top show bands playing prestigious Irish venues. She had similar success when she moved to London and joined the popular dance band; The Squadronaires. In 1955 her first solo record was released, followed by two more the next year. From 1959 to 1964, Lee was a member of The Raindrops, a successful quartet who made countless appearances on British TV and variety shows, had a BBC Radio show and released a string of records, the majority of which had Lee as lead vocalist.

Lee went solo in 1965 and recorded albums until 1967. Lee was also a respected session singer, through her groups The Jackie Lee Singers and Tears of Joy. She provided the backing vocals for such worldwide hits as “Green Green Grass of Home” by Tom Jones and “Release Me” by Englebert Humperdink. She was also featured on such diverse recordings as “Hey Joe” by Jimi Hendrix; and much of the James Last catalogue at the time. At one point Elton John was hired by Lee as a member of her session singers. In addition she also sang various songs for film soundtracks.

In 1968, going under the name “Jacky”, she had a UK Top Ten hit single with “White Horses”, the theme from a children's TV program. Her album of the same name was also released in 1968, which also featured Dudley Moore on piano. By 1970, “Jacky” reverted to “Jackie Lee” and had another hit record “Rupert”, from the TV show based on the famous cartoon character, Rupert Bear. “Jackie's Junior Choice”, was released on Pye Records in 1971, followed by “Rupert and Other Junior Favourites” in 1973. It was shortly after this she retired, yet remained a respected vocalist!

Track Feature: Angie and the Deserters - 17 Days

Angie and the Deserters quickly became one of my favorite listens last year. That trend most definitely is continuing in this new year.

Their latest EP You is chock full of Americana treats peppered with the spice of the blues and the punch of rock and pop.

"17 Days" features Angie and the band in fine form with a full head of steam. They offer up the fine vocals and the excellent musicianship their fans have come to appreciate.

This fan loves the music and the voice on every track I have heard from this fresh and energetic outfit. Check out the great guitar playing along with the tight rhythm section that is a constant compliment to Angie.

Listen, love it, live it, then listen again!

James has a great voice filled with soul and funk and he knows how to deliver it all with style.

This is a big slice of contemporary, pop and funk mixed together with perfection by a rising young star of the stage. He a great name too, he already sounds like a music/movie star! Check it out for yourself now.

Featured Stream: Naked - Brielle Von Hugel

Brielle Von Hugel bares her soul with a new single titled "Naked." This is a gorgeous lady on the outside and just as beautiful on the inside.

She has a tremendous set of pipes. If you have not heard of her, well you just did and you will quite a bit more I suspect.

The woman will not be ignored, her voice is powerful and passionate and steeped in emotion that flows out her. It is a feeling I am sure all of us can relate to. This is when you find the special person you can be yourself with including all the baggage, bumps and bruises life can offer.

Listen the words, the voice and woman who is singing about something she has lived - there is no doubt that it is real.

The video on "Naked" is quite good as well so listen, watch and enjoy!
