Classic Rock Legends Spirit's Self-Titled Debut Album To Be Released On Limited Edition Hybrid SACD!

Includes 4 BONUS Tracks!

Marshall Blonstein's Audio Fidelity will be releasing Spirit's Spirit on limited edition hybrid SACD, which includes 4 bonus tracks! Spirit's 1968 debut album spent more than six months on the Billboard album charts and received heavy airplay on underground FM radio. Their music was part of the core, essence, and heartbeat of  the hippie, psychedelic, counter culture movement. The album is timeless, as fresh today as when it first appeared.

The band could play more styles than almost any other group. On Spirit they unveiled a mélange of rock, jazz, blues, folk-rock, and even a bit of classical and Indian music. The music is experimental. The vocals flow as easily as the instrumentals. Spirit struck a careful balance between disciplined studio chops, jazz improvisation, and driving rock and roll. Guitar prodigy Randy California is a clear standout, but the other band members are superb as well; John Locke's shimmering keyboards, Mark Andes' subsonic wall of bass, and Ed Cassidy's precision drumming. Big credit has to go to lead singer Jay Ferguson, whose phrasing is always just right with a wonderful spontaneous feel. The Marty Paich string arrangements are sublime.

The songs tackled unusual lyrical themes, like “Fresh Garbage” and “Mechanical World” while “Uncle Jack” showed some solid psych-pop instincts. And, it has long been debated if Led Zeppelin lifted the opening guitar lines of Spirit's “Taurus” for their own much more famous “Stairway to Heaven.”

This is an essential album if ever there was one, and it would prove impossible to trace any musical time line without the inclusion of Spirit, and in particular, this body of work.

“A true touchstone to the late sixties and the music of the times.”

Original Genesis Guitarist Anthony Phillips "Slow Dance" Re-mastered & Expanded 3-Disc Edition Now Available on Esoteric Recordings!

Genesis founding member and guitarist!

London - Esoteric Recordings are proud to announce the release of a newly re-mixed and expanded deluxe 3-disc edition of the classic 1990 instrumental album by Genesis founding member and guitarist Anthony Phillips, “Slow Dance.” Regarded by aficionados of Anthony's music as one of his finest releases, “Slow Dance” is a two part orchestral rock suite which showcases Anthony's music at his most expansive and imaginative.

This new 3-disc(2 CD / 1 DVD) digipak Deluxe Edition of the album features a newly re-mastered original stereo mix and a 5.1 Surround sound mix by Simon Heyworth (on an NSTC / Region Free DVD), along with a CD of previously unreleased “Slow Dance Vignettes.” It includes a lavishly illustrated booklet that fully restores the original album artwork and features a new essay by Jon Dann.

Says Ant, “ 'Slow Dance' was an important album to me because it represented the first time that was I able to do a full-scale album after all the miniatures of the, for me, thrifty 80s! I had stockpiled a number of ideas during those years and finally, due to the promise of an advance from my then record company, Passport, I was able to realise these on the big canvas, as it were. Alongside those ideas, I wrote a lot of new material, helped by the new gear, most which feature on Side 2.  I was kindly advanced the money by my management Hit & Run and then….Passport went bust….?!!!

“Album all written but not recorded…! What to do …?! Hit & Run were terrific, didn't pressurise me and I was able to complete the album, secure a publishing deal with Virgin - which led to my catalogue being realised on CD - so the gamble paid off…Phew !!! But it was veritably a labour of love. Seven months very hard work. No road map for that album. Did it make sense …? One long continuous piece, broken up into two sides…?

“I really wasn't sure and having finished it, found listening to it unbearable ! Yet years on it has its admirers (one who even says he has not been moved thus by an album since…). So I must have got something right - and in the re-release we have tried to really make the re-purchase worthwhile with the improved sound of the main album, the extras CD and the 5.1. I hope the public agree!”

Anthony Phillips is a composer and guitarist who is known as a prolific writer of music for film and television as well as a recording artist. He was a founding member of the band Genesis alongside Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks with whom he recorded the albums “From Genesis To Revelation” and “Trespass.” After leaving the group in 1970, Ant studied orchestration and harmony externally at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. After passing his LGSM exams, he taught music at Reeds School and Peper Harrow whilst continuing to compose and record in his home studio.

Ant released his critically acclaimed debut solo album “The Geese & The Ghost” in 1977 and since then has created a large and diverse output as a recording artist. As well as album releases such as “Wise After The Event,” “Sides,” “Slow Dance” and “Field Day,” he has to date also released eleven albums in the “Private Parts & Pieces” series and four volumes in the “Missing Links” series. Amongst other projects, he collaborated with Harry Williamson on the large-scale instrumental work “Tarka” and he also co-wrote the stage musical “Alice” with Richard Scott.

Whilst Ant continues to release solo albums to critical acclaim, increasingly his music has also been much in-demand for film and television. Commissions have included scores for both dramas and documentaries and he has written and recorded music for over a dozen Survival programmes in collaboration with percussion virtuoso Joji Hirota, including the award-winning “Land of Dragons” and “Creatures of the Magic Water.”

Ant has also established himself as one of the most prolific and successful composers of library music, with tracks from his extensive output being regularly featured on commercials, films and television series throughout the world.

2014 saw Ant renewing his association with Cherry Red Records via the Esoteric Recordings label who are re-issuing his back catalogue. “Harvest of the Heart,” a five-CD deluxe box set anthology which celebrates Ant's rich musical heritage by featuring recordings made between 1969 and the present day was released in November 2014 to wide-spread acclaim. Subsequent re-releases have included “Private Parts & Pieces I - IV” (a deluxe clamshell box set of the first four albums in that series) and deluxe editions of the albums “Wise After The Event,” “Sides” and “1984” all of which feature new stereo and 5.1 surround sound mixes.

Esoteric Recordings also recently released the definitive edition of the 1977 seminal debut solo album by Ant, “The Geese and the Ghost”. The music album could arguably be seen to have begun life as far back as 1969, but in essence it was the result of nearly four years hard work by Anthony, in collaboration with Mike Rutherford (who co-wrote three of the pieces on the record), beginning with a series of recordings made on TEAC 4 track tape recorders, progressing to sessions on the barge studio of engineer Tom Newman. Enlisting the assistance of Phil Collins, John Hackett, Viv McAuliffe, Jack Lancaster and many others, “The Geese and the Ghost” finally appeared in 1977 in America on the Passport label and in the UK on the Hit & Run imprint.

Lauded by many as a supreme achievement, this definitive of “The Geese and the Ghost” has been newly re-mastered from the original master tapes by Simon Heyworth and includes a stunning new 5.1 Surround Sound mix of the album by Andy Myles and Simon Heyworth, along with a CD of demos and early versions of the tracks on “Geese”. The bonus tracks are completed with the addition of both sides of an abortive single from 1973, “Silver Song” and “Only Your Love” (previously unreleased). Both tracks feature Phil Collins as vocalist. This 3-disc clamshell box edition includes a lavishly illustrated booklet with new essay by Jonathan Dann and fully restores the original UK album artwork.

French Music Legends Magma Release Remastered "Wurdah Ïtah" Featuring Unreleased Material!

Featuring 25 minutes of previously unreleased material!

Paris, France - French music legends Magma have released a new remastered version of their critically acclaimed 1974 album “Wurdah Ïtah” on CD! The release includes for the first time, “Wurdah Ïtah Prima Materia,” the Original Demo used for the soundtrack to the film “Tristan & Iseult.”

“Winter 1971. Between two series of concerts, we are pacing in circles like caged animals. Georgio Gomelsky senses the tension in the air and decides to book the little Chappell studio for us for a few days in order to release our pent-up energy. On 3 January 1972, Klaus Blasquiz, Jean-Pierre Lembert, René 'Stundëhr' Garber and I enter the studio. Despite the many imperfections of this recording, it remains an essential document to understand the origin of 'Wurdah Ïtah' and to feel our frenzy at the time.” - Christian Vander 1974

“Wurdah Ïtah” was recorded in April 1974, just one month before the sessions which produced “Kohntarkosz.” It forms the second movement of “Theusz Hamtaahk,” an epic work in three movements of which “Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh,” recorded a year earlier by Magma, forms the final part. Performed by the core players in Magma at that time - Christian Vander (piano, drums, vocals), Jannick Top (bass), Klaus Blasquiz (vocals, percussion) and Stella Vander (vocals) - “Wurdah Ïtah” is music stripped down to its bare essence. Although a total contrast to the splendour and orchestral power of “M.D.K.,” it nevertheless has just as great rhythmic power and surprising vocal lyricism, unquestionably marked by the claws of Magma!

Recorded and mixed April 4th, 5th& 8th 1974 at Studio de Milan (Paris)  by Jean-Pierre Bameulle

New booklet – Lyrics included!

Audio Fidelity To Release Grand Funk's Shinin' On in Original 3-D Art Package on Limited Edition Hybrid SACD

Includes a BONUS pair of 3-D Glasses!

Camarillo, CA - Marshall Blonstein's Audio Fidelity will be releasing Grand Funk's widely popular classic rock album Shinin' On on limited edition hybrid SACD. Riding high off the success of their 1973 We're An American Band hit album and tour Grand Funk retained the extraordinary Todd Rundgren to produce Shinin' On, the band's eighth album.

Don Brewer, Mark Farner, Mel Schacher and Craig Frost took the band to another level. The songs are tight, the vocals are excellent and the group is in top form. Shinin' On is pure Grand Funk and considered a favorite among many fans and critics.

Shinin' On's best songs are the tracks that became the hit single releases: the SACD opens with the dynamic title track augmented by Craig Frost's keyboard work and pumped-up behind Don Brewer’s aggressive vocals the track infuses its hard-driving, spacey rock groove with some surprisingly ethereal vocal harmonies. The cover of the Carole King and Gerry Goffin penned “The Loco-Motion” turned this dance classic on its ear with a stomping beat and a screeching guitar lead from Mark Farner that shot the chuggin' pop remake straight to #1 on the Billboard singles chart and helped drive gigantic album sales.

Closing-out the album is Grand Funk's amped-up blues rocker “Little Johnny Hooker” which features Farner's powerful and driving guitar work.

The original album was packaged in a cosmic 3-D sleeve that had a pair of 3-D glasses embedded in the front cover to best appreciate the dramatic art work. Each Audio Fidelity Shinin' On SACD slip case will include a pair of 3-D glasses so the brilliant art work can be viewed as originally intended.

Another legendary hard-rocking album from Mark, Don, Mel and Craig – Grand Funk! So pump up the volume, break out those classic 3-D glasses and keep on shinin' on!

Audio Fidelity To Release Legendary Santana Live Album “Lotus” 2-CD On Limited Edition Hybrid SACD

“...one of the greatest live albums ever recorded and one of the supreme achievements in guitar playing.”

Camarillo, CA – Marshall Blonstein's Audio Fidelity will be releasing Santana's critically acclaimed live album Lotus on limited edition hybrid SACD. Lotus is a 1974 live album by Santana, recorded at the Osaka Koseinenkin Hall, Osaka, Japan in 1973. It was originally released in 1974 as a triple vinyl LP in Japan only. The first U.S. release was in 1991 as a 2-CD set. It features the “New Santana Band” and combines that group's jazz and spiritual influences. Some of the band's biggest hits are performed, such as “Black Magic Woman” and “Oye Como Va,” but it is the extended, intense instrumentals that are the order of the day such as the breathtaking “Incident at Neshabur,” “Every Step of the Way,” and “Toussaint L'Overture.”

Carlos' superpowered guitar is mesmerizing, the entire atmosphere is otherworldly, beautiful, modern jazzy and most of all, electrifying. His guitar tone is perfect, each solo has a central rhythmic and melodic structure that was used to express in a moment what can never be repeated. The greatness of Lotus is its ability to take all of Carlos' beautiful melodies and expand them each into a whole new creation.

Santana fans know there are “several different Santanas.” This was the MILES Santana, the COLTRANE Santana. This is intense and awe-inspiring music played with so much mind-numbing passion. Carlos' guitar speaks notes on this recording that are nothing short of extraordinary. He manages to imbue a vibration that cuts right through your soul. Even on the familiar hits, the jazz fusion makes its way into the notes and Carlos delivers a new message. This was the top of Santana's spiritual-fusion era. Lotus is the Live Santana album that gives other Live albums a bad name. Spectacular, breathtaking, emotional, spiritual...and it rocks!

Rare Tribute To Nico “Songs They Never Play On The Radio” Reissued!

London, UK - Much to the excitement of Nico and Velvet Underground fans worldwide, James Young's “Songs They Never Play On The Radio” has been reissued on Gonzo Multimedia!

James Edward Young is a British musician and writer. Young grew up in Oldham, Lancashire and began learning piano at the age of 7. He studied Art History briefly at the University of East Anglia before moving to Oxford to study at the Polytechnic and in 1982 was accepted as an MPhil student at Oxford University. This period coincided with his meeting Nico (Velvet Underground) and Young took the decision to work with her instead of continuing with academic life. Young toured and recorded as keyboard player and arranger with the group Faction until Nico's death in 1988. They toured the world together and at one stage shared a flat in Brixton, London. Since then Young has written books, recorded solo albums, created BBC radio features, written on Outsider Art and curated exhibitions.

Young's memoir of his years travelling with Nico Songs they Never Play on the Radio, was published to international critical acclaim in 1993, winning the In The City award for music book of the year. Described by Greil Marcus in Esquire as “A coolly literary masterpiece about the geography of nowhere”, the book was later serialized in 1996 for BBC Radio 4. In 1994 Young was invited by Alan McGee, founder of Creation Records, to record a musical representation of his memoir of the Nico years.

The album “Songs They Never Play On The Radio” followed a year later in 1994. Alan McGee of Creation Records had read the book and asked Young if he'd be interested in making a record that evoked it. Highlights from that album are contained here as well as later songs and instrumental pieces relating to Young's life on the road with Nico.

The album covers every aspect of that time from first meeting to burying Nico in Berlin. It includes samples of Nico talking as well as Young's distinctive piano and vocal. The pieces vary in tone from the lyrical to the ironic and from the playful to the dark.

This is not just a collection of songs … it is a life.

Flash Legend Ray Bennett Reissues 2001 Solo Album “Whatever Falls”

Las Vegas - British progressive rock pioneer, Ray Bennett of Flash, is reissuing his 2001 solo epic “Whatever Falls” for the first time as a digital release, available now on iTunes, and in most digital stores worldwide for purchase and streaming!

With it's original release just days after the Twin Towers fell on 9/11, the hauntingly beautiful title track, “Whatever Falls” was, by eerie coincidence, appropriate and especially moving. But every track of this extraordinary work is an adventure into the innovative mind of an artist who helped define the progressive genre of rock.

Hailing from Sevenoaks, Kent, in S.E. England, Bennett formed his first band, THE BREED, at fourteen with future YES drummer, Bill Bruford. At 21, he and original YES guitarist Peter Banks formed FLASH (EMI/Capitol). This fast and furious, flashy 70's band was much acclaimed, but short-lived. They toured worldwide and recorded three albums with a hit single “Small Beginnings” reaching #28 in the USA. (FLASH is currently available on the UK Esoteric label.) After numerous reissues of their music over the years, FLASH reformed with Bennett, now on lead guitar, and original vocalist Colin Carter. In 2013, forty years since the last FLASH album, “Flash-Featuring Ray Bennett & Colin Carter” was released on Cleopatra Records.

Describing his solo effort, “Whatever Falls” today, Ray says: “As it was my first solo record I wanted it to be something special. I had taken so long to get around to it I felt sure it would get some serious scrutiny, so, coming from me, with my background, it had to be something worthy of my previous output. A flop wouldn't do. An 'Ok' album wouldn't do either…

“An album is for all time and intended for repeated listening. Each new listen should be the same pleasurable discovery. Some of my favourite albums are like that and I wanted mine to be too. I feel I succeeded.”

What rock journalists said in 2001:

“Ray Bennett has released what is very close to a masterpiece with this album.  The disc seems to take common elements of progressive rock both old (Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd) and new (Spock's Beard, modern King Crimson) and blend them with other elements to create a sound that is both modern and unique.” - Gary Hill, Music Street Journal

“Going solo at this point in his career an artist can be either boring or outrageous. Luckily, with Ray Bennett, it's the latter - today only a few play progressive music as frighteningly intense and haunting.” - Dmitry Epstein, LET IT ROCK

“A mix of atmospheric guitar-based rock instrumentals and songs that feature Bennett's vocals, the skilfully recorded 'Whatever Falls' clearly falls into the progressive rock genre and is essential listening for those who enjoyed those fabulous Flash albums from the early '70s.” - Robert Silverstein, 20th Century Guitar Magazine

Featuring:
Bennett : lead vocals, guitar, bass and keyboards
Mark Pardy drums (also plays on “Flash-Featuring Ray Bennett & Colin Carter”)
David Kannenstine contributed bass on two tracks
Bennett, mixing, producer
Ed Fritz, engineer basic tracks
Gerry Collins, Protools editing and mastering

Former Jethro Tull Keyboardist Dee Palmer's “The Orchestral Sgt Pepper” and Other Titles Reissued

London, UK – Gonzo Multimedia has reissued Dee Palmer's “The Orchestral Sgt Pepper”! From 1968 until 1980 she was arranger and, subsequently, keyboardist with the globally prestigious, seminal English rock group, Jethro Tull. On leaving the group she produced an acclaimed series of albums of symphonic versions of prog-rock music of the 70's – Tull, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Yes, Queen etc. – performing them, live, in Europe and the Americas throughout the 90's.

In June 1967 The Beatles released “Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band”, their eighth studio album. The critic Kenneth Tynan described it as "a decisive moment in the history of Western civilization". Richard Poirier wrote: “Listening to the Sgt. Pepper album one thinks not simply of the history of popular music but the history of this century.” Time magazine declared it “a historic departure in the progress of music – any music.” Newsweek's Jack Kroll called it a “masterpiece”, comparing the lyrics with literary works by Edith Sitwell, Harold Pinter and T. S. Eliot, particularly “A Day in the Life”, which he compared to Eliot's The Waste Land. The New York Times Book Review characterized it as a harbinger of a “golden Renaissance of Song” and the New Statesman 's Wilfrid Mellers praised its elevation of pop music to the level of fine art.

In 1994, Dee Palmer orchestrated this classic album for EMI at the famous Abbey Road studios with the Royal Academy Of Music Symphony Orchestra, donating the lion's share of the royalties for the benefit of impecunious music students at the Royal Academy, having once been one herself.

Currently working on a variety of projects including Dee's autobiography and a long awaited album of original songs, she has recently completed the choral arrangements of songs from three of her series of symphonic rock albums, with a future “Prog-Rock Prom” performance in mind.
