Streaming Track: David Bowie - Toy (Your Turn To Drive)

This was real treat to hear. David Bowie has been making some incredible music now for over 50 years and now with the recent release of (yes yet another compilation) Nothing Has Changed, a new 3 CD and 2 CD set, well some things have changed.

The set does offer some unreleased tracks and variations on the Bowie catalog staples. I thought "Toy (Your Turn To Drive)" was quite good actually. There has not been much over the years that Bowie has produced that has not been exceptional so this is yet one more track to enjoy!

Rock-Pop Review: The Beatles-Rubber Soul 180 gm Vinyl LP

Release Date: September 9, 2014
Label: Capitol/Parlophone

The Beatles went through several formative phases during their incredibly successful career. The series of mono 180 gram vinyl LP releases in mono is a tribute to their originality. The albums are how the band believed they should sound after recording.

Rubber Soul was a pivotal album that initiated a major change in their style and complexity with music, lyrics and overall direction. The album came on the heels of the enormously successful Help! album and subsequent movie.

The McCartney and Lennon writing partnership reached new heights with Rubber Soul. “Nowhere Man” and “In My Life” are fine examples of their maturity with the lyrics and the musical presentation. These classic tracks still stand as monumental achievements in The Beatles catalog of recorded works. Of course the all-important lead off track “Drive My Car” was nothing to sneeze at; it was an incredibly huge hit and a great way to kick off the album.

Ringo got his moment in the spotlight leading off side two of the LP with “What Goes On.” He also got writing credit with Lennon and McCartney under his real name Starkey. The songs Ringo provided lead vocals on always had a different musical direction and a welcome one at that. This one had a certain country twang that separated it from all the others besides Ringo’s very distinct vocal style.

So The Beatles released yet another album chock full of hits just as everyone expected. What was to come after this recording would set them on a path into the world of psychedelic rock with more intricate music followed by a succession of complex lyrical endeavors. This made them less predictable and multi-dimensional (in a good way). With each subsequent release things got more adventurous and experimental but Rubber Soul is where the biggest change happened ushering in new era for the mop tops.

Pop/Rock Review: The Turtles-45 RPM Vinyl Singles Collection

Release Date: September, 16, 2014
Label: FloEdCo/Manifesto

Flo and Eddie (Mark Volman & Howard Kaylan), two of the driving forces of the 60s pop stars The Turtles, have released all of their hits on a limited edition 7” vinyl box set. 8 newly mastered 45s that include 16 tracks. The music has been long out of print and will surely delight their fans and those that collect vinyl. Vinyl sales have been increasing for a few years now and the resurgence is helping artists to sell their music again. After all you can’t share or download a vinyl 45 in its original state.

This is the first time in the band’s history they released their entire hit singles collection in one vinyl box set including the lesser known rare tracks. I was just a little guy when they were in their prime but I do clearly remember their songs particularly “Happy Together,” “She'd Rather Be with Me” and “Elenore.” I am certainly not the only one in my age group or older that would remember those three songs. They all made their mark and are recognized worldwide to this day.

The attraction is not only the pure pop genius of these songs, it’s the presentation of high quality vinyl remastered specifically for the format. All the songs sound crisp and clear and you don’t need a high end stereo system to enjoy the 45s. This is timeless pop rock that is simple, original, and puts you in a time capsule all your own. If you grew up in that time period, remember it as a child, or this is an introduction, there is tremendous joy in what you will hear on this special release.

The 45 RPM Vinyl Singles Collection comes in a nice cardboard box and each record has a sleeve to protect it. It is music like this and the format that are attracting older fans and newer fans alike. This is history and now you can hold it in your hand, admire it, share with it family and friends and cherish it for years to come. Now tell me what download on iTunes can do that? There is only a limited amount of copies produced so get yours now!

If you are interested in reading the entire history of the band you can download a 10 page PDF on their website.

Rock-Pop Review: Elvis Presley-That’s The Way It Is (Deluxe Edition)

Label: Legacy

The Elvis Presley music just keeps coming and for fans of the King it’s always a great day when new music is unearthed from the archives. That’s The Way It Is (Deluxe Edition) continues that tradition. The set comes in the 2 CD Deluxe Edition and an expanded 8 CD/2 DVD set.

I am a fan of Elvis and I have had the pleasure of checking out the digital version of the larger set and enjoying all the footage on the DVD. I especially enjoyed the “fly on the wall” footage of Presley in the studio with his band and witnessing every day conversations. Even though he was a huge star I could see how he set people at ease with his demeanor. I would think the diehard fan would love the expanded set and the casual fan would go for the regular release. Either way you get a good glimpse of Elvis hitting his stride and some added bonuses along the way. One of the bonuses includes the accompanying booklet with several pictures and a fantastic write up from Warren Zanes about this critical juncture in Presley’s career.

Other added treats include outtakes and original singles culled from the sessions and of course the amazing live shows. In his third decade of recording the man was at the top of his game and you bear witness to that incredible talent and energy he commanded in the studio and on stage.

The sound quality is superb on this set. They did an excellent job of remastering the original tapes, bringing the legend of Elvis out of your stereo system directly into your room where your stereo resides.

The best part is you get it all with this deluxe set, the original album outtakes, the original singles then the opening night performance in Las Vegas. The venue held 2,000 seats so he was able to move around, mingle in the crowd, and kiss all the ladies. Folks who managed him were surprised he did that. In this instance Elvis was so happy about the music and overall performance that he was transferring that joy to his audience like never before. This was 1970 when we lived in different world and Presley was a world renowned star, once again reminding everyone of the power and magnitude of his music.

If you are a fan of Elvis Presley’s music you most certainly will recognize many of the tracks. This will also serve as a good introduction to his music as any I have ever heard. This is one more reminder that there will never be another one like Elvis to grace the stages or recording studios. Performers like this will be forever in our hearts and minds for their originality and unique charisma and appeal to their audiences.

What I have come to appreciate over the years is the versatility of Elvis and the musicians that performed with him. There was a time in my life that I was not paying attention but that changed several years ago and now I can fully understand the impact and far reaching influence this performer had on music as a whole.

This set comes highly recommended from this Elvis fan and music lover.

Blues Rock Review: Eric Clapton and Friends-The Breeze-An Appreciation of J.J. Cale

Release Date: July 29, 2014
Label: Bushbranch Surfdog

When it comes to guitarist, it is hard to do better than Eric Clapton.  Some might say there is no one better.  The former member of influential bands such as The Yardbirds and Cream, Clapton has come together with other music stars to pay tribute to a fallen friend.  J.J. Cale was a singer and song writer, who was one of the founders and main driving force behind what is known as the Tulsa sound, a mix of jazz, blues, rock, and country.  His songs have been covered by the likes of Eric Clapton, Jerry Garcia, Phish, John Mayer, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Johnny Cash.

A year after he died of heart failure in 2013 at the age of 74, Eric Clapton gathered other music greats to pay their respects by covering Cale’s songs.  Joining Clapton on this album are Tom Petty, Mark Knoplfer, Don White, John Mayer, Derek Trucks, and Willie Nelson.

Eric Clapton takes the reigns solo on the first track. “Call Me the Breeze” is not only the perfect song to open this album, but it is also the perfect introduction to the music and sound of J.J. Cale.  From the very beginning, it is simply enchanting, and captures exactly what Cale meant when he referred to his style of music as “laid back.”  Its carefree attitude makes it a choice selection in these end of summer days.  Tom Petty joins Clapton on “Rock and Roll Records,” making for a smooth and pleasant song. Clapton and John Mayer come together for the bluesy “Lies.”

Don White adds a sensual atmosphere to the low-key “Sensitive Kind.”  Clapton returns for a great rendition of “Cajun Moon.” It has some pop and sizzle to it and brings the tempo back up.  Twinging with a sense of melancholy, “Magnolia” is an emotional, heartbreaking love song.  Petty and Clapton bring the mood back up with some wonder guitar harmony on “I Got the Same Old Blues.”  “Songbird” is a remarkable, standout song thanks to the distinct and powerful vocals of Willie Nelson.

Clapton and White share vocal duties on “I’ll Be There (If You Ever Want Me),” a hopping up-beat country song.  Tom Petty does his best to steal the show on “The Old Man and Me” with his quiet, whispery vocals.  Mark Knopfler, White, and Clapton make their case for best song on the album with the lively and harmonious “Train to Nowhere.”  It also has a killer harmonica on it.  Mayer returns one last time on “Don’t Wait” for some searing guitar work. Featuring Derek Trucks and Christine Cale, “Crying Eyes” brings the album on home for a strong finish.

Eric Clapton and Friends’ The Breeze (An Appreciation of J.J. Cale) is a wonderful album and tribute to a fallen friend.  It does its job of not only honoring the man’s life work, but it also the type of album that can bring in a new generation of fans.  This album is truly a labor of love done by friends.

Rock Review: Jack Bruce-Silver Rails

Release Date: April 15, 2014
Label: Esoteric Antenna
Jack Bruce had not released a solo album in ten years and more recently the man came so close to death that it is was a miracle he survived. We can now enjoy his latest work Silver Rails.

His last solo album was More Jack Than God in 2003, which I had the pleasure of covering and I gave it a 5/5 star rating. 2008’s collaboration with Robin Trower and Gary Husband Seven Moons, was nice return to form however there has been 5 year gap since that release arrived. That space has now been forgotten and filled as we move into a new era for the legendary bass player and vocalist. He is another one of those old rockers that is now 70 and still able to create vital music. Even though I refer to him as a rocker his roots are in blues and jazz and his music always mirrors that but he knows how to make it rock!

A list of guest stars populates this excellent recording. Phil Manzanera, Robin Trower, John Medeski, Cindy Blackman Santana, Bernie Marsden, Uli Jon Roth, Malcolm Bruce and many more. Some lyrics were penned by Cream lyricist Pete Brown, long-term collaborator Kip Hanrahan and Jack's wife Margrit.

This is the kind of album that will grow on you with each listen. Bruce’s voice is so unique and recognized that it seems he is a hands down success no matter what he does, much like his former band mate Mr. Clapton.

“Reach for the Night” is one of my favorites and it clocks in at a hefty 6:19. This is a track that puts on display the complexity and preciseness of a Bruce composition. The musicianship is outstanding as one would expect. Is the track too long or a bit over the top? Absolutely not and the length is just right for what they get accomplished. “Keep It Down” is the bluesy number that old cream fans would crave and it gets the job done in typical Bruce like fashion.

“Hidden Cities” and “Rusty Lady” are standouts as well. The tracks have you travelling down a road of musicality and deeply soulful emotions as all of that reverberates through the music and words. “No Surrender” is the curtain closer and does it ever leave with bang. I would venture to say this is one of the best tracks that Bruce has recorded in a mighty long time. It is the perfect closer and anthem for a man that never gave in or gave up and the very reason he is still here turning us on with his music to this day. It kind of leaves you hanging wondering when the next track is going to start, but alas dear listeners it never happens. You will have to give it another spin and or wait for the next installment of incredible music from the music icon. That is just fine with this music fan.

It’s time to ride the Silver Rails with Jack Bruce and it’s a brilliant trip that you will want to take again, I promise you that.

Rock Review: Billy Joel-A Matter of Trust-The Bridge To Russia (2 CD/2 DVD Set)

Release Date: May 19, 2014
Label: Legacy

Billy Joel, music icon, father, and ambassador. Wait, ambassador? That is correct!  In 1987 he was an ambassador for the U.S and music when he arrived in Russia to perform concerts. A Matter of Trust-The Bridge To Russia is a 2 CD/2 DVD set that documents his visit handsomely.

I have enjoyed this man’s music since the 70s when I bought his mega hit single “Piano Man” to spin on my record player. He has been one of the most consistently good artists for over four decades. He has that New York state of mind and it has always worked well for him. He wears his heart on his sleeve and his music has the energy and swagger of that great city.

A Matter of Trust-The Bridge To Russia The Concert(DVD or Blu-ray) contains newly restored and remastered material from Live In Leningrad, 1987, a full-length concert film that has been unseen since its VHS release (VHS seems so antiquated now). For its DVD and Blu-ray debut, the concert has been remastered from the original 35 millimeter negative and expanded to include 12 previously unreleased performances, more than doubling the running time of the original release! Joel fans will find this to be a treasure trove of delights and a slice of music history that few artists can say they were part of.

The set is also available in a Deluxe Edition boxed set containing a full-length concert film (The Concert) on DVD or Blu-ray; a 2CD album featuring previously unreleased tracks and bonus material; and, as an exclusive, the Showtime documentary film chronicling Billy's 1987 Soviet Tour. In addition, the Deluxe Editioncomes with a book containing rare photos and new liner notes including first-hand accounts from writers and journalists who were there. The set I was fortunate enough to have enjoyed has everything but the book included.

I would highly recommend watching the documentary of the visit to Russia then watching the concert. For this fan it was interesting and revelatory to say the least. I did not know a thing about the journey Joel, his family and band took until I watched the documentary. It helped me to understand the importance and timing of his visit. The timing was perfect as things were just starting to change there and the music not only represented an artist from the U.S, it meant so much more to the people there. It was an expression of feelings and freedom and they finally had a chance to let their hair down, stomp their feet and hoot and holler. Joel was the catalyst for that and perhaps much of the change that was to come after he left.

The live performances are full of hot n’ sweaty angst and feasibly that is just how the audience felt with their lives at the time. What Billy understood was that the Russian people did not want to fight us, they wanted to get to know us better and adopt a democratic society as we have always enjoyed here, thanks to the millions that have died and suffered in world wars and conflicts. Joel gave them a slice of American pie that they would never forget.

Joel was in good voice and the band was hitting on all their cylinders for these performances. The remastered video is fantastic and it spotlights a performer giving it his all every second. The audience knew that and they responded with a lot of appreciation and enthusiasm. It helped to have an interpreter on stage at some points so Joel could say what he wanted about certain songs, but for the most part the music did all the talking and it said a lot to those there listening even if a majority of them could not understand English. Joel was so emotional and expressive and the music just fueled his on stage persona.

This set is a document to the power of music and the courage and openness of a troubled people that found a way to open their arms to a U.S. rock star and let him know that they were no different than any other audience anywhere else in the world. Perhaps for Joel it holds a lot more meaning now then we can ever understand because we did not live the experience but this is the next best thing. I advise that you make sure you get your copy now and open your eyes and ears to a musical experience that you will be glad you had.

Pop/Rock Review: Roy Orbison-Mystery Girl Deluxe

Release Date: May 19, 2014
Label: Legacy

“The Big O” Roy Orbison is sorely missed. We could use a true star and talent like him to right the radio waves these days. His life was cut short but his legend continues to live on and gather momentum with each passing day. Mystery Girl was the album that reinvigorated Roy and was the beginning of new phase of his long and successful career. Unfortunately he was not around long enough to enjoy the success of the recording.

Mystery Girl Deluxe has been released by Legacy Music as a deluxe package with bonus tracks and a DVD. It will mark the 25th Anniversary of its release.

Much like The Traveling Wilbury’s that Roy was part of, the session brought together a cavalcade of stars such as George Harrison, Jeff Lynn, Tom Petty and others to make an already incredible talent more appealing. It was not like he needed the help; it was more the fact that everyone wanted to be involved with the man’s process. Who can blame them? He was revered and idolized by fans and peers alike and for good reason. His voice was a gift from heaven and his music and voice would just sweep you away with its emotion and beauty.

Mystery Girl – Deluxe brings together the album’s original 10 songs, including the hit single “You Got It,” in addition to premiering nine previously unreleased studio and work-tape demos. That lead off track always gives me the chills when I hear it. He was the master of the pure pop rock song. Among those reworked tracks is “The Way Is Love,” featuring a newly restored Orbison vocal track layered with contemporary guitar, drum and vocal accompaniment by Roy’s three sons (Roy Jr., Alex and Wesley, who all add their commentary on the DVD). The package also includes “Mystery Girl: Unraveled,” a new one-hour documentary chronicling the song-by-song creation of Mystery Girl through rare and intimate archival footage and the memories of those who were there. In addition to the “Mystery Girl: Unraveled” documentary, the DVD includes eight Roy Orbison music videos, four of which are previously unreleased including a piece documenting the renewal and rebirth of “The Way Is Love.” This is a tremendous additional to the Orbison catalog and the accompanying booklet and DVD shed light on how people felt about him as a performer and person. I can you tell this, I have never heard a bad thing said about the man.

Some humorous conversations come about with the stars that worked with him. Tom Petty for instance mentioned when they were in the studio, Roy leaned over and whispered in his ear “I have some Cherry Coke for us.” He was a simple man that treated everyone with respect and kindness while everyone around him was in awe of his talents. It did not change him one bit. In essence Roy’s music was a direct reflection of the beautiful soul that was inside the man.

“(All I Can Do Is) Dream You” is great track as well and it sounds as wonderful today as when it was first released. “A Love So Beautiful” is perhaps the most emotional and touching track showcasing that gorgeous falsetto of Orbison’s. His voice was instrument all by itself and I do not think there was ever any one like him nor will there ever be again. Listening to this release makes one realize that fact without a doubt.

“California Blue” is another one of my favorites along with the title track. Music does not get any better than this. All the elements that make the experience magical-great lyrics, fine musicianship, and one incredible vocalist completing the package are ever present. A lot has to be said for the excellent collaborations that Orbison engineered. How can one go wrong when you have George Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty involved?

Roy Orbison gave us all so much while losing so much during his life. It’s a wonder he was able to carry on and be successful after what happened to him. I think the good lord took him away because he had suffered enough emotional pain. What he left us was some of the most amazing music humanity has ever had the pleasure to hear. This is a beautiful set that you must have if you are a Big O fan or can appreciate finely crafted pop-rock songs. This is one group of tracks that offers listeners everything they could possibly expect from a legendary artist and more.

Rock/Blues/Country Review: Various-All My Friends Celebrating The Songs & Voice of Gregg Allman

Release Date: May 6, 2014
Label: Rounder Records

The legend of the Allman Brothers Band and its namesake Gregg Allman has transcended time and all barriers for music fans across the globe. They have been credited with being one of the originators of the jam band culture and rightly so. Allman has survived the turbulent times of drug addictions, the loss of his brother Duane and many lineup changes in the band. He has come out the other side of all that and continues to carry on the tradition of great blues rock music to entertain countless fans everywhere that flock to his concerts.

On January 10th this year at the Fox Theater in Atlanta a special event took place. A tribute to the music of Gregg Allman, All My Friends Celebrating The Songs & Voice of Gregg Allman, was recorded and filmed. 4 hours of pure blues rock was presented to a full house of appreciative fans. The set was released this month by roots label Rounder Records and it encompasses two CDs, one DVD and a booklet with several pictures at that event and liner notes. The package folds out into four sections and is presented in a nice cardboard case.

The lineup is a who’s who of music including The Allman Brothers Band, Devon Allman, Trace Adkins, Kenny Aronoff, Jackson Browne, Eric Church, Natalie Cole, Audley Freed, Brantley Gilbert, Vince Gill, Warren Haynes, John Hiatt, Rami Jaffee, Jaimoe, Dr. John, Chuck Leavell, Taj Mahal, Keb’ Mo’, Martina McBride, Pat Monahan, Sam Moore, Jack Pearson, Robert Randolph, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, Don Was and Widespread Panic. Now if that isn’t a good choice to represent your body of work I really don’t have a clue what else could be considering the genre. As it turned out it was an excellent show of respect and replication of Allman’s music. Any fan of a particular artist is understandably hesitant going into something like this. It is natural to feel some doubt of how the music is going to sound compared to the originals. Let me assure you this is an outstanding reproduction of the Allman cannon in every way.

So where does one start with such a comprehensive set? It’s not an easy task when all the tracks are so well done. The band that remained on the stage throughout the performance was incredibly good and obviously why it was easier to reproduce all the songs for the guest vocalist. Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks were a constant force and there was a killer horn section with the usual wall of percussion behind them.

Vince Gill has always been a favorite of mine and thousands of other country music fans and his contribution to the show was stellar. He served up “Multi-Colored Lady” like only he could and I am sure Gregg was pleased. That is one example of several performances that make this set a special treat for rock, blues and country music fans. What is nice to see as well is that Allman is visibly happy and at peace these days. Attitude dictates an overall atmosphere at a concert or anywhere else for that matter, so with that in mind it makes for an out of this world performance from everyone involved including the honored icon.

There are far too many instances of musical clarity and exceptional musical craftsmanship to mention on this set and it would be easy to babble on forever about what you will hear and see on this concert. All I can say is that this one is a keeper and a must have to any Allman fan or blues, rock or country enthusiast. All of those genres are represented here along with some jazz runs that only The Allman Brothers Band could pull off in a live setting. All the pieces of the puzzle came together just as if it was meant to be all along. If there is a rock ‘n’ roll heaven this is what it must be like.

Rock Review: Elton John-Goodbye Yellowbrick Road 40th Anniversary

Release Date: March 25, 2014
Label: Universal
So where does one start with an album that has become part of them over the years? This is music that shaped a generation and holds so many memories. Just like The Beatles and Rolling Stones and their many landmark releases, it had a tremendous impact when it came out and it remains one of the greatest rock recordings of all time. Elton John’s classic double album Goodbye Yellowbrick Road is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year. With a string of hit singles, just as his releases that came before it, this became a classic album. It stands out more than others because of the cross sections of genres presented within the 18 tracks.

A good friend of mine had this album on eight-track and played it a lot. I did not have it at the time and was actually not too sure about it when I first heard it. That opinion changed in a matter of a few months after EJ was releasing one hit after another from this impeccable collection of musical diversity. It was hard to ignore if you listened to the radio, which we all did in those days. I would have to say that it was very progressive in nature as EJ explored all the genres and molded and shaped each song into something special and memorable. “Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding In My Hands” still throws a chill up my spine to this day. The beautiful and tragic “Candle In The Wind” brings rushes of sadness for the terrible ending of Hollywood’s icon Marilyn Monroe. The spirit and angst of teenagers comes at you with excitement on “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting.” It still sounds like the perfect rock song to stomp your feet to and shout out let’s rock! As I cranked up the volume to annoy my parents and neighbors one more time on a sturdy turntable or portable cassette player, everyone within earshot was reminded of the reach of EJ. Of course this was after hearing the songs play all day on the radio. That is how word spread when this album was released.

There have been several reissues and remasters of this album and I have had the pleasure of hearing two up to this point. They both had their moments and were appreciated however I would have to say that this version really nailed it for overall sound and clarity. I noticed both subtle and eye popping changes and for the first time I was able to understand most of Elton’s vocals that eluded me. That is a major change and improvement upon previous versions.

Being the 40th anniversary there were many different things added to the package besides a complete overhaul of all the tracks. The first disc is the original double album, which by the way would be in my top ten desert island discs. And the second CD is interpretations of the songs by various artists. While I could appreciate the diversity and artistry involved it was not something I really enjoyed because they were so far away from the originals. This is the kind of album that is rock’s sacred ground that should not be trifled with. It’s fun and different but it would not have bothered me in the slightest if it was omitted from the package.

The third and fourth discs are vintage performances at The Hammersmith in 1973. The sound quality is good and what you would expect for that time frame. It features Elton and his band pumping out the hits going full strength from beginning to end. It’s not anything extraordinary but nice to hear how they presented all of that great music in a live setting back then.

The DVD is Bryan Forbes' 1973 film Elton John and Bernie Taupin Say Goodbye To Norma Jean and Other Things. I found this movie very informative and entertaining. The up close interviews with Elton and band provide insight into the recording process and really shed light on the fact that EJ was a musical genius and Taupin a brilliant songwriter. What I did not know was that Elton never wrote music down, it was all right inside his head and then he just played and everyone else added their parts. If anyone was wondering why the man was so flamboyant and eccentric? It was because he was brought up in a very strict household. Imagine not being allowed to wear hush puppy shoes? These are the kind of restrictions he had growing up. So that explains the different colored hair and the crazy glasses he used to wear, not to mention the outfits he would present on stage. Yes many of us knew that there was more to his flamboyance  and behavior before he formerly announced that he was gay publicly. I also got the references to “Sweet Painted Lady” and “All The Young Girls Love Alice,” his nod to prostitution and lesbians. None of that ever made me bat an eyelash, I simply loved the music but was not oblivious to the meanings of the songs. Back then I guess he got away with something whereas today it would not be anything out of the ordinary.

Then to top off this collection you get a 100 page hardback book discussing the album, EJ’s career, rare pictures, and words to every song. Needless to say this is quite the package to take in and enjoy, and that I did. The music can stand alone but the icing on the cake was all the extras and it sure made it more fun and an insightful look into one of the greatest rock records ever made. Goodbye Yellowbrick Road 40th Anniversary is one big party befitting its legendary status and a must have for any music fan.

Pop/Rock Review: The Beatles-U.S. Albums Box Set

Release Date: January 21, 2014
Label: Capitol
When the time comes for the 100th anniversary of The Beatles arrival in America I will be long gone, unless between now and then they invent something that will prolong life indefinitely. If they did it would be kept a secret unless we have another planet to live on besides earth. Beyond all of the hypothetical mumbo jumbo is the simplicity of another era that did not have computers and luxury items were color TVs and Cadillac’s. There was no internet, personal computers, iPads, flat screen TVs or cell phones. We had a TV with 3 channels, that’s right 3, and the movie theaters to step away from reality. I guess you could say that was our reality TV of the day was the movie theaters, both indoor and outdoor. And we had this thing called imagination that we used on a daily basis and brains that had to think and remember things without pointing and clicking to get an answer in seconds…and we had those fabulous long haired young men from Liverpool that won our hearts and ruled the airwaves of local radio stations. All you had to do was turn a knob and you were transported. It was much less complicated back then and easier to live from day to day.

I believe the iconic Fab Four (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison) will be celebrated with as much appreciation and joy as they were this year in another 50 years. We just enjoyed their 50th anniversary of arriving on these shores with a TV special and a recently released U.S. Albums box set and I would expect more of the same in the future. We have never seen the likes of this band and it is likely we never will again. What they did was historical, groundbreaking and flat out commercial genius. There is no way I could possibly be brief when discussing The Beatles, they were the fabric of the society I grew up in. As a 5 year old boy I clearly remember watching them perform on The Ed Sullivan show (in black and white) and being frustrated that I could barely hear them playing because of all the screaming girls. I was too young to be buying 45s and albums by the mop tops so I listened to my brother and sisters records who were 8 and 4 years ahead of me.

I have been writing music reviews for over 15 years now and have had the pleasure and honor of covering many great recordings. It was my turn to join in the celebration of the greatest band that ever recorded rock and pop music. They continue to influence artists all over the world and are right at the top of the heap as the most beloved performers along with Elvis, Frank Sinatra and The Rolling Stones. There certainly are others to add to that “A” list but to this music fan there was not anyone that could possibly compare for the all-around impact on culture, daily life, commercialism and popular music than The Beatles.

The Beatles paid their dues for many years and lived with very little so they could play there music and get their shot at stardom. It all broke loose once they came to the U.S. The 13 disc box set has one additional disc called The Beatles’ Story(an audio documentary), a 64 page booklet and promotional art of the day. Those extras are not part of the package I received for review however I did have digital access to all of the artwork. I was the lucky recipient of the 12 CDs which sold separately and that was just fine and dandy with me. All the CDs come packaged like an import in the cellophane fold over sticky seal top and the thin paper binder along the spine. I like that style of packaging and the fact that the CD cases are cardboard replicas of the original albums is a treat as well. 11 of the original albums are presented in mono and stereo so you get to sit through a replay of each song with a different sound. There are not a lot of bands that I could sit and listen to like that, very few in fact. I never tire of The Beatles and their songs because all of them always sound so good. I think the fact that they crafted such accessible tunes made them universal. For the older fans there are so many memories and emotional attachments to the music that you find yourself absorbing it all again and again just like you did when the album’s first came out. They will always have that magic that holds you spellbound and in an eternal time capsule. It’s a wonderful thing that is treasured by all who understand exactly what I am talking about. The inner sleeves have additional protective cellophane sleeves that fit right inside the paper sleeve so you end up having three different layers of protection for the CDs. Note that the Hey Jude and The Beatles’ Story are in stereo only. A Hard Day’s Night (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), The Beatles’ Story, Yesterday And Today, Hey Jude and the U.S. version of Revolver are presented on CD for the first time. Yesterday And Today features the original legendary “Butcher” album cover of The Beatles posing with raw meat and baby dolls. The option of a layover sticker comes with it to put over the famous cover if you find it unappetizing or repulsive. It’s a nice quality sticker and an extra that one would not expect.

I know many people including myself bought the remastered complete box set in 2009 but keep in mind that this set has many different unique aspects that the larger box set does not. Some examples besides the previously mentioned bonuses are “I Want To Hold Your Hand” track sung in German which translated to “Komm, gib mir deine Hand,” or the instrumental and orchestral versions of tracks. This current set combines some of the previously issued mono and stereo box sets into one set with several different nuances to sweeten the pie for fans and collectors alike.

From where this music fans sits you can never go wrong with The Beatles and there seems to be a lot of creativity and different versions of songs that add to the overall history of the band which in turn gives us all hours and hours of enjoyment for the rest of our lives or as long as we choose to listen. Now that is something you cannot put a price tag on.
