If you were ever curious about what life was like for a music professional in the 60s and 70s, I have one of the best books for you. Rock And Roll Warrior is an in-depth account of David Libert. He started playing piano at a very early age, much to his dismay, which is a typical story you hear. The difference here is what developed after being forced to take piano lessons by his parents.

I absorbed this book quickly and became utterly engaged from beginning to end. My interest in music, all aspects of it, was a good starting point. However, if you are a music fan and like to read about all the exploits of touring and what goes on, you are in for one hell of a revealing story.

David was in the 60s band The Happenings, a pop band that spawned several hits, and perhaps the most memorable was "See You In September." I remember hearing that song, but I will not tell you when!

David's success in the music industry as a musician and band manager created a fascinating story. His account of his lifelong journey through sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll is a firsthand look at all his exploits touring and many of the colorful characters he met along the way. His stint as Alice Cooper’s Road Manager was very entertaining. His quick thinking and wit led to his success and getting out of some, let's say, uncomfortable situations. He learned lessons from some of the most challenging people in the business and ran the Alice Cooper tours like a well-oiled machine.

While David enjoyed all the decadence of the rock lifestyle, all the ups and downs, then running his agency, getting rich, then becoming a drug dealer to survive was a roller coaster ride you will never forget once you read it all. He had the knack, as they say, of coming out of the shit smelling like a rose. Even after being busted a second time for dealing drugs and being incarcerated, he found a way around everyday prison life, making the best of the situation and putting himself in a favored position. For that, I admired his resilience and his thinking on his feet. His personality and drive were perfect for working in the dog-eat-dog world of the music biz.

From Alice Cooper to the crazy exploits of George Clinton (free your ass, and your mind will follow), he explains in detail what it was like working with these music superstars. The story sheds some light on many of the industry's truths that still apply today. I think in the last few chapters, many musicians will find a positive message and the fortitude to stand up and fight for their art.

David Libert is now in retirement living comfortably with the love of his life and his dogs in California. Now is the perfect time to release his life story. So many people over the years have fallen hard and are part of the story in music. David was the exception that came out on the other side alive and well.

Today is a different world, but I would be willing to bet a lot of the same things still go on, and one, the taking advantage of artists and ripping off their recorded music happens in several different ways. I read nothing in this book that surprised me, and it just validated how crazy the music business can be and how dangerous it is if you fall prey to everything out there, ready to gobble you up and spit you out.

Mixup: Two Musicians Both Named Brian Woodbury Get Their Music Profiles Confused on the Internet and Decide to Make a Song Together

Brian Woodbury is a Los Angeles songwriter, composer and bandleader, who has just released his 9th solo album Rhapsody & Filigree, the Final Volume of his Anthems & Antithets tetralogy, each volume in a distinct musical mood: comic, personal, political & arty.

Brian Woodbury is also the name of a Utah-based jazz trombonist, who last year released his first solo album Dream Feeder.

Except, according to the streaming platforms, they’re both the same person.

When Utah Brian put out his album, LA Brian found his own music and artist profile on Spotify, YouTube, etc. conflated with Utah Brian’s. LA Brian tried to sort out the mess, and reached out to Utah Brian to enlist his help. They figured if they both contacted the streaming platforms, it would be simple to disentangle their online identities.

Not so simple, in fact. Even getting through to someone at the streaming platforms was a challenge. And once they got through, the process for disentangling their identities was frustratingly difficult.

As a joke, LA Brian suggested they really confuse the algorithms by making a song together. They both thought this was a funny idea but then they actually did it.

LA Brian wrote lyrics for “The Other Brian Woodbury,” the true tale of being mistaken for somebody with the same name. In the style of pre-war swing jazz, LA Brian wrote music for an Intro and a Verse and then handed it off to Utah Brian to write music for a Bridge. Together they created an extended Instrumental section, indulging their experimental sides.

They arranged it together, but recorded it in separate studios, with LA Brian singing and bringing in pianist David Witham, bassist Edwin Livingston and drummer Andy Sanesi; and Utah Brian overdubbing himself on 8 trombones, creating a big band horn choir.

LA Brian says, “It’s really a song for anyone about whom misinformation has been perpetuated on the internet. Which, I think, is just about everyone.”

The resulting song is now out as the second track on LA Brian’s newly-released Rhapsody & Filigree album. And since the collaboration worked out so well, LA Brian invited Utah Brian to play trombone on 3 other songs that appear on the album.

Blues Rock Guitar Legend PAT TRAVERS Gets Set For New Album Release, Shares New Single “RONNIE” In Tribute To His Friend RONNIE MONTROSE!

Los Angeles, CA – Pat Travers, the blues rock icon and guitar-slingin' wizard is set to return to center stage with a masterful new studio album to be released worldwide on August 19. The Art Of Time Travel is a solid testament to the magic of Travers’ unique brand of classic blues rock, which has that supernatural ability to transport listeners into the not-too-distant past when rock was king and guitars dominated the airwaves – all while still sounding as fresh and relevant as ever.

Indeed, The Art Of Time Travel harkens back to the muscular playing of Travers’ late ‘70s heyday, when the artist was topping the charts with smokin’ hot albums such as Crash and Burn and the live Go For What You Know album, yet still tackles current topics such as the COVID quarantine (“Breaking Up In Lockdown”). One of the standout songs is Travers’ emotional and cathartic tribute to his friend and mentor, the late Ronnie Montrose. Montrose was one of the most gifted and influential guitarists of his time, whose profound impact on Travers can be heard on the single “Ronnie” and throughout The Art Of Time Travel.

Travers had this to say about his relationship with Ronnie: “I was hugely influenced by Ronnie Montrose as a guitar player and band leader. I first saw him playing guitar for Edgar Winter. I just loved his attitude as the lead guitar player. He always had this intense look in his eyes like he was ready to bust out a smoking guitar riff at any second. He became a good friend and it was always a blast to talk with him on the phone. I mentioned to him once about his intense gaze when I had seen him live and he told me that his brothers called him ‘Captain Hi-beams’ when they were kids. I thought that was funny. Ronnie was a very, very nice guy and I miss him.”

Bass Icon Jeff Berlin To Release New Tribute Album To Legendary Jack Bruce “Jack Songs”

Features guest performers Sammy Hagar, Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee, Gregg Bissonette, Gary Husband, Eric Johnson, Bill Frisell, Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal, Alex Ligertwood, Scott Henderson, Marcus Miller, Ron Carter, Tony Levin, Michael League, Nathan East, Mark King, Bruce Guttridge, Billy Sheehan and Johnny Hiland!

“Jack Songs” produced by John McCracken

Bass icon Jeff Berlin will be releasing a new tribute album to legendary Jack Bruce titled “Jack Songs” on August 2, 2022! Jack Bruce, best known for his work with classic rock group Cream as well as his critically acclaimed solo work passed away in 2014. Jeff Berlin, who has been called “the greatest bass player in the world”, was a personal friend of Jack’s and wanted to record his songs in remembrance of how Jack helped Jeff to find his own musical path.

Says Jeff, “Recording the music of Jack Bruce has been the most emotional recording project of my career. Jack was the greatest bass influence I ever had. In the center of his music were these strange and wonderful bass lines weaving in and out of the key, reaching for resolutions and finding them, again, and again. Jack’s playing was a living evolving improvisation.

Jack was the Alpha and Omega for me. I never would have become the bass player I became if I didn't hear his unfettered improvisations and innovations, his creating a completely original bass tone, and his playing every gig as if it was his last. When he died, I immediately set out to honor him by reviewing his music to choose some of my favorite songs of his and recording them via my own musical vision. As was his legacy of musical brilliance, I wanted this record to be brilliant to honor his spirit. He really means this much to me.

‘Jack Songs’ isn’t a cover CD, not in the literal sense. Except for a couple of tunes from his Cream period (arranged in ways that should surprise people) most of the songs on this CD come from other periods in Jack’s musical life after Cream. Jack’s solo career represented a multitude of musical styles. This recording will be a new revamp of some of those songs, some of the best music that I heard from one of the greatest musicians of the last fifty years.

In arranging the music, I was inspired by Giles Martin’s production of The Beatles ‘Love’ CD. His production work on this CD is fantastic. I tried to follow his example of his fitting various Beatle song quotes from different tunes into each tune by doing a similar thing by combining different Jack songs. Rather than computerized manipulation of music that was already recorded, I arranged the music so that each song on ‘Jack Songs’ would end up as an individual work comprised of various parts of other songs in them. I never would have thought of this without Giles showing me this path.”

Guest performers:

Sammy Hagar, Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee, Gregg Bissonette, Gary Husband, Eric Johnson, Bill Frisell, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, Alex Ligertwood, Scott Henderson, Marcus Miller, Ron Carter, Tony Levin, Michael League, Nathan East, Mark King, Bruce Guttridge, Billy Sheehan and Johnny Hiland!

JACK BRUCE, BASSIST FOR THE ICONIC BAND CREAM, ONCE DESCRIBED JEFF BERLIN AS THE “THE BEST BASS PLAYER I’VE EVER HEARD.”

For over 40 years, Jeff Berlin has stood as one of the most innovative electric bassists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Known for his one-of-a-kind tone, jaw dropping technique and highly advanced harmonic approaches to the bass, Jeff has been one of the major figures in firmly establishing the electric bass as a solo instrument well deserving of its own distinct place in modern music.

Jeff’s recording and performance credits include a who’s who of jazz and rock. They include: Bill Bruford, Allan Holdsworth, Larry Coryell, Pat Martino, John McLaughlin, Anderson Wakeman Bruford Howe, Frank Zappa, Patrick Moraz and many more.
