Two Full Length Unreleased Live Recordings From Krautrock Pioneer Joel Vandroogenbroeck & Brainticket Finally See The Light Of Day!

Los Angeles, CA - In 1980, Belgian-born multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Joel Vandroogenbroeck revived his early ‘70s avant-garde electronic act Brainticket alongside longtime member Willy Seefeldt, jazz musician Hans Deyssenroth, and Swiss jazz & electronic aficionado Bruno Spoerri. Three years later the quartet would perform their very first show in a landmark performance at the “Computer und Musik” symposium in Zürich, Switzerland. Though long a part of Brainticket lore, this concert has never before been released on a commercial format, that is, until now! Purple Pyramid records is proud to release this incredible live performance, matched with an equally historic performance in 1984 at the Théatre de Beaulieu in Lausanne, Switzerland of Vandroogenbroek and Spoerri plus Peter Fürst. Both of these full-length concert recordings contain improvisations and compositions not found anywhere else! Zürich/Lausanne is available as both a 2CD set as well as on all digital retailers!

Track List:
DISC 1: Live in Zürich - February 4, 1983
1. Flight In The Rings Of Saturn
2. Seventh Dance To Relativities / For Papa
3. Dark Star

DISC 2: Live In Lausanne - October 20, 1984

Drum Legend and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Bill Bruford Releases Definitive Boxed Set, "Bruford 1977-1980: Seems Like A Lifetime Ago"

Pre-order the Limited Edition 8-disc Box Set, with unreleased, remixed or remastered material & a signed certificate

Drum legend and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Bill Bruford, best known for his work with YES, King Crimson, Genesis and his prolific solo career, is releasing the definitive boxed set “Bruford 1977-1980: Seems Like A Lifetime Ago.” Scheduled for release on Winterfold Records on October 28th, pre-orders are now being taken for the Limited Edition 8-disc set, which features unreleased, remixed or remastered material & a signed certificate.

WATCH THE PREVIEWS:

Bill Bruford reflects on embarking on a solo career and forming Bruford: “I wanted to play drums in a certain way and if you want to hear them played in that way you've got to write the song. You've got to control the audio environment in which your drums are going to be heard and once you're doing that you're into a solo career. Looking back, the band despatched these tricky little compositions with a smile on its face; with brio, vigour and only a handful of wrong notes. The band was over-caffeinated - short on subtlety but long on the sort of majestic stately themes with antecedents in progressive rock that set it apart from contemporaneous American outfits. We were a rock group with a jazz sensibility, rather than a jazz group with rock leanings.”

WHAT'S IN THE BOX?
A new 8-disc limited edition set of previously unreleased, remixed, or remastered material from the Bruford band of the late 1970s, presented in a 12” box complete with 16-page colour booklet and a signed, numbered certificate of authentication. Four gatefold sleeves contain two discs each:

Disc 1 DVD: Feels Good To Me: 5.1 surround sound mix and original 1978 mix remastered
Disc 2 CD: Feels Good To Me: 2017 Jakko Jakszyk remix from original master tapes
Disc 3 DVD: One of a Kind: 5.1 surround sound mix and original 1979 mix remastered plus additional audio
Disc 4 CD: One of a Kind: 2017 Jakko Jakszyk remix from original master tapes
Disc 5 CD: Gradually Going Tornado: remastered
Disc 6 CD: The Bruford Tapes: remastered with bonus track
Disc 7 CD: Live at the Venue: previously unreleased: recorded London 1980
Disc 8 CD: The 4th Album Rehearsal Sessions: previously unreleased: eighteen sketches of new material recorded 1980

ALSO INCLUDES:
16-page 12” booklet with a Sid Smith essay, new interviews with producer, engineer, band members, eyewitnesses and others, previously unseen archive visual material, and the complete band date sheet with contemporary critical reaction. Also two black and white 10” x 8” band photos, one A3 size colour poster accompanying “Live at the Venue”, and one signed, numbered certificate of authentication. The boxed set is produced by Bill Bruford.

Containing the collected works of Bruford on one extraordinary 6cd/2dvd-a box set, “Seems Like A Lifetime Ago” is a magnificent testament to one of the UK's most inventive and important Progressive Fusion bands.

Featuring 2017 remastered versions of the albums “Feels Good To Me” (1978), “One Of A Kind” (1979), “The Bruford Tapes” (1979), and “Gradually Going Tornado” (1980), the set additionally includes the previously unreleased “Live At The Venue” (from 1980) and the highly sought after “4th Album Rehearsal Sessions” (also from 1980).

“Bruford 1977-1980: Seems Like A Lifetime Ago” showcases the prodigious talents of Bill Bruford, Dave Stewart, the late Allan Holdsworth (who the album is dedicated to), Jeff Berlin and The 'Unknown' John Clark.

Says Dave Stewart, “The great thing about Bill is that he's not just a drummer. He doesn't just think about what he's playing...he's thinking about the whole picture; thinking about soundscapes; what the guitar is doing; the arrangement; the keyboard sounds and so on. He's got this composer/arranger mentality which was there from the beginning and he evolved through the life of the band. He's a deep-thinking musician and it was great working with him for that very reason.”

Jeff Berlin adds, “I learned a lot from Bill. Bill was the person who opened more doors for me not only with regards to reputation...he opened up doors to me about sound, presentation, interplay, the elements of a performance, the elements of group interaction. I think it was one of the happiest and musically productive periods I ever had in my career. I was working with fine human beings and with fine musicians.”

“Feels Good To Me” and “One Of A Kind” are available on both remastered CD and DVD-a, the latter featuring 2017 5.1 mixes by Jakko Jakszyk. Says King Crimson's Jakszyk on remixing “Feels Good To Me” and “One Of A Kind” into surround sound, “I use the original mixes as a guide and Bill handed over the whole 5.1 remix to me. It becomes an immersive experience. I'm not talking about flying instruments around 360 degrees. While that's possible it's also ridiculous...it's all about sculpting the sound into three dimensions. The new versions of these albums sound much bigger, fatter and warmer and whilst I'm keen to take credit for that the reality is that this is Dave Stewart, Jeff Berlin, Bill Bruford and Allan Holdsworth, and it's not just about their playing abilities; it's that they've got their sound together and what you need to do is replicate that and not mess about with it.”

Rare Demos From '70s Space Rock Pioneers CAPTAIN BEYOND Released On The Compilation LOST & FOUND 1972-1973

Los Angeles, CA - It's a music collector's dream come true - vintage demo tracks, never heard before, from space rock supergroup Captain Beyond are about to be released on both CD and special limited edition red colored vinyl! For those new to the band, Captain Beyond are one of the most underappreciated gems of '70s rock. A supergroup of sorts, featuring members of Deep Purple (Rod Evans), Iron Butterfly (Lee Dorman & Rhino Reinhardt), and The Johnny Winter Band (Bobby Caldwell), Captain Beyond released 3 studio albums that caused shockwaves in the music world, the effects of which still ripple to this day.

Legend has it that Duane Allman heard a demo tape of the unsigned Captain Beyond and was so blown away that he all but demanded the band join The Allman Brother's own label Capricorn Records. The rest, of course, is history but those original demos remained buried by time until just recently when they were uncovered by Captain drummer Bobby Caldwell. Now these are being released as Lost & Found 1972-1973 on June 2 via Purple Pyramid Records. Not only will fans be able to hear the original versions of songs such as “I Can't Feel Nothing” and “Dancing Madly Backwards” but there’s a special treat for diehard fans: “Uranus Expressway” is a song that has never appeared on any subsequent Captain Beyond release. Lost & Found will be made available on CD in a deluxe gatefold wallet with extensive liner notes by music historian Dave Thompson as well as a limited edition red colored vinyl pressing!

Track List:
1. Uranus Expressway (previously unreleased!)
2. I Can't Feel Nothing, Pt. 1
3. As The Moon Speaks (To The Waves Of The Sea)
4. Astral Lady
5. As The Moon Speaks (Return)
6. I Can't Feel Nothing, Pt. 2
7. Icarus
8. Raging River Of Fear
9. Dancing Madly Backwards (On A Sea Of Air)
10. Myopic Void (CD ONLY)

French Music Legends Magma Release Remastered "Wurdah Ïtah" Featuring Unreleased Material!

Featuring 25 minutes of previously unreleased material!

Paris, France - French music legends Magma have released a new remastered version of their critically acclaimed 1974 album “Wurdah Ïtah” on CD! The release includes for the first time, “Wurdah Ïtah Prima Materia,” the Original Demo used for the soundtrack to the film “Tristan & Iseult.”

“Winter 1971. Between two series of concerts, we are pacing in circles like caged animals. Georgio Gomelsky senses the tension in the air and decides to book the little Chappell studio for us for a few days in order to release our pent-up energy. On 3 January 1972, Klaus Blasquiz, Jean-Pierre Lembert, René 'Stundëhr' Garber and I enter the studio. Despite the many imperfections of this recording, it remains an essential document to understand the origin of 'Wurdah Ïtah' and to feel our frenzy at the time.” - Christian Vander 1974

“Wurdah Ïtah” was recorded in April 1974, just one month before the sessions which produced “Kohntarkosz.” It forms the second movement of “Theusz Hamtaahk,” an epic work in three movements of which “Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh,” recorded a year earlier by Magma, forms the final part. Performed by the core players in Magma at that time - Christian Vander (piano, drums, vocals), Jannick Top (bass), Klaus Blasquiz (vocals, percussion) and Stella Vander (vocals) - “Wurdah Ïtah” is music stripped down to its bare essence. Although a total contrast to the splendour and orchestral power of “M.D.K.,” it nevertheless has just as great rhythmic power and surprising vocal lyricism, unquestionably marked by the claws of Magma!

Recorded and mixed April 4th, 5th& 8th 1974 at Studio de Milan (Paris)  by Jean-Pierre Bameulle

New booklet – Lyrics included!

"Phaedrus" Digital Magazine & Subscription Service Issues Rare & Unreleased PROG Music!

Carlos Plaza, leader and main composer of Kotebel, is now Chief Editor of a new quarterly digital magazine and subscription service called “Phaedrus.” The new magazine/service provides awareness among the progressive community and specializes in this genre and, among other content, provides a couple of features that are truly unique! Exclusive PROG music at an affordable price!

Phaedrus Music

“Phaedrus” offers original music that is not available for sale anywhere. In every issue, previously unreleased music is published and subscribers can download it in MP3 of WAV lossless. Says music artist and editor Carlos Plaza Vegas, “In this initial 'Phaedrus' phase, I'm the composer of all these pieces but as soon as 'Phaedrus' gains enough critical mass, I will be purchasing rights for original music from artists that I like. Thus, belonging to the Phaedrus Community will give you access to music that, at least for several years, will not be (legally) accessible by any other means. When the published pieces reach more than 45 minutes, a 'Phaedrus' album is manufactured and released. This album is sent to subscribers at no additional cost (not even shipping).” The digital magazine & subscription service is about to release its first album, “Triptych.”

Classics Choice

In this section, selected progressive rock master works are subject to analysis. It is important to highlight that we are not talking about reviews. The objective of these analyses is to submerge the listener into the details of the work. To allow the listener to discover hidden details, to better understand how the piece has been built, the relationship with the lyrics, the integration with the conceptual framework, etc. For the past 20 years or so, Progressive Rock has found a place among scholars. More and more musicologists are choosing progressive rock pieces as basis for research, doctoral and master's thesis. Many universities now include progressive rock as a course that forms part of music graduate and undergraduate programs. These research papers are aimed at musicians and musicologists and include a lot of technical information that requires a solid music training. These works, as interesting as they are, cannot be fully understood by the average progressive music fan. Carlos explains, “So, what I do as part of these analyses, is to strip from those documents the parts that require profound music knowledge. I select fragments, 'decaffeinate' others, create a lot of new material, and build a detailed analysis that can be followed by any progressive music fan.”

Phaedrus has already published analyses of: “Close to the Edge” (2 articles), “Tarkus,” “Starless,” “Supper’s Ready” (2 articles) and “A Passion Play” (part 1). Next publications are: “A Passion Play” (part 2), “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway,” “Relayer,”and “Karn Evil 9.”

These analyses renew the listening enjoyment of beloved progressive rock classics but the most important benefit is this: These analyses help to develop listening skills that will enhance your enjoyment of music for the rest of your life!

Other “Phaedrus” sections include:

Kotebel Corner: with exclusive material for Kotebel fans including rare recordings, videos and music analyses.
Articles on a wide range of subjects related to art in general and music in particular.
Album recommendations.

The first album available “Triptych”:

“Triptych,” Phaedrus Music's first album, offers a wide variety of styles, from symphonic progressive rock to chamber music. It features Carlos Plaza's facet as a multi-instrumentalist, accompanied by a host of very special guests, including some very known to Kotebel fans.

The album is named after a three-piece suite whose first movement, “Dawn”, is the original piece from which the Adagio from Kotebel's “Concerto for Piano and Electric Ensemble” was based. The album also marks the beginning of a long-term project: to put music to all 22 major Tarot arcana. “Triptych” includes “The Fool”, “The Magician” and “The High Priestess”. The rest will gradually be presented in future Phaedrus Music albums.

Carlos Plaza explains, “ 'Triptych' is an album that will appeal to a wide audience of progressive fans. From hard symphonic pieces like 'Ignition' to classical chamber music like 'The High Priestess', or even Zeuhl ('Magmatron' – my tribute to Magma), it covers a wide palette of textures and styles.

“Although the only way to get this album is by subscribing, subscription is so low that there is really very little difference compared to a standard purchase. The most economic subscription is the Semester Option, that costs 16.98 euros per semester (2.83 euros/month). Since you can cancel the subscription at anytime, you can subscribe, request the album, and for only 5 euros more (assuming the average cost of an album is 12 euros shipping included) you will have 6 months to enjoy all of Phaedrus' private contents and cancel the subscription if you are not interested. The album of course, is yours to keep. So, almost for the price of an ordinary album, you will have a collector's item.”

You can get the album, and listen to excerpts of all the pieces, visiting: www.phaedrus.es/triptych

Terry Bozzio Solo Project 1991:

I've never finished it over the years until now, because of technology problems (computer not fast enough to mix - midi & sync problems, & not enough track space to do overdubs etc!) but I always liked the compositional approach to the drum parts! I look at it as a missing link between guitarshop, and melodic drumming & the ostinato! The period after recording the drums included doing the lonely bears & polytown & changing to Mapex, then DW as well.

I have a new track to release. It's called “Advent”. It's the first in the Terry Bozzio Solo Project 1991 series. I went into Jeff Burton’s garage studio (he is the son of Elvis Presley's famous guitarist James Burton!), with Missing Persons' Live Sound Engineer (who has been my dear friend from the very beginning of that band), Gary Epstein. We recorded my drums on Jeff's 16 track 2” machine.

We managed to get 9-10 tracks down with a beatbox for a hybrid sound. With no idea of what it would ultimately be, I tried to improvise composed beats along with the beat box and create different sections, based on what felt was natural to do next. I had the concept of overdubbing the music on it later.

One thing we tried right away was to float in some vocal stuff I had done with Patrick O'Hearn in his studio at previous session a year before. The result was very good and inspired me to do more with other previous recordings. At that time I was living near Jeff in Studio City and had converted my garage into a little studio too. I called it White Rooms. I had a 3M 79 16 track 2” machine (bought from Gary Wright!) as well, & some early midi equipment and started to drag the midi overdubs via a sync tone from the 3M. A very slow and tedious process at the time!

But the magic was that 2 of my previously recorded vocal tracks, just done in free space up in Oregon w/ Pat, using my vocoder, synced up unconsciously, but perfectly with 2 of the drum track's structures! So it was meant to be.

I'm still not finished with all the tracks, but I have 4 almost ready to go, & coming soon! This is the first and it's called “Advent”. It means “a coming”. Burning drums, Bulgarian Folk Singing, and driving sequencer parts. I hope you like it!

Curved Air Rarities Series Vol. 2 “Curved Space & Infinity” Now Available!

London, UK - “Curved Space & Infinity”, the second volume of the CURVED AIR RARITIES SERIES, is now available! These TWO separate albums, packaged together are a must for fans of the legendary Prog band and instrumental improvisational music!

This instrumental double CD set is the only Curved Air release not to feature lead singer Sonja Kristina, but has been released with her full support and blessing.

The line-up on “Curved Space”, which was previously released as Francis Monkman's “Jam” but now features two previously unreleased bonus tracks, includes Francis Monkman (guitar), Florian Pilkington-Miksa (drums) and Rob Martin (bass).

Francis Monkman commented “I'm pleased that the ‘Jam CD’ has been transmuted into a Curved Space release. An entirely collaborative effort, I was never keen for it to be released in the guise of a solo album, but there seemed to be no viable alternative at the time. Listening to it now, it seems to me to sound as fresh as ever - indeed it was an ideal for some bands in the 1960's to come as close as possible to jamming all the time, precisely because the process of raw discovery holds elements that simply cannot be reproduced when material has been subjected to rehearsal (usually after dissection into some kind of song format).”

The line-up on “Infinity”, which are all NEW 2016 STUDIO RECORDINGS includes Florian Pilkington-Miksa (drums), Kirby Gregory (guitar) and Robert Norton (keys).

Robert Norton said of Infinity “At times we found it hard to believe these compositions were created entirely in the moment and were genuinely surprised and inspired by what emerged from them. The name Infinity encapsulates the spirit of freedom with which the three of us approached the making of this album and the limitless possibilities of creating music in the moment.”

DISC ONE: CURVED SPACE
1. TOWARDS TOMORROW
2. SEA OF TRANQUILLITY
