Concert Review: The Outlaws and Blackhawk

There Goes Another Love Song…The Outlaws and Blackhawk Rock The Colonial
Pittsfield, Mass.
December 4th 2014

It didn’t feel like the winter in Pittsfield Massachusetts last night with country rockers Blackhawk and the Outlaws warming up the Colonial Theater. My word they were good! Let me rephrase that, great!
I was not familiar with Blackhawk but understood going in it was the same band playing different songs from each band’s catalog.

The Outlaws is a band with a storied past and Blackhawk has some history behind them now with 9 albums out. I picked up a copy of their Greatest Hits & More autographed CD at the show because I was just so impressed with their set and engaging country rock sounds. The only two original members in the Outlaws are Henry Paul (guitar and lead vocals) and Monte Yoho (drums) however the present lineup plays each group’s music with a sense of pride and professionalism that was greatly appreciated by this listener.

The current members of both bands are as follows:
    Monte Yoho – drums, percussion (1969, 1970–1979, 2005–present)
    Henry Paul – guitars, vocals (1972–1977, 1983–1986, 2005–2006, 2008–present)
    Steve Grisham – guitars, vocals (1983–1986, 2013–present)
    Chris Anderson – guitars, vocals (1986–1989, 2005–present)
Dave Robbins – keyboards, backing vocals (2005–2006, 2010–present)
Randy Threet – bass, vocals (2005–present)

I saw the Outlaws in Tangelwood in their heyday back in the 70s and distinctly remember seeing two drummers and three or four guitar players creating a wall of sound that was incredible. New flash; they still have what it takes to deliver all of that great music live!

Blackhawk kicked things off. As I looked around I saw some empty seats, something I not used to seeing at The Colonial. I supposed it’s the time of year, the cold weather and people putting their hard earned cash into Xmas gifts. Tickets to this show would have been appreciated as an early gift by any music lover believe me!
I was quite impressed with the Blackhawk sound, which is very much country with flourishes of rock interspersed. I have never been a big country fan to be honest but I was last night. This is a band with a ton of talent at every position in the band.

The jams with all the guitars and each member with the ability to sing make them very strong presenting every song in their repertoire. “Goodbye” started things off for Blackhawk and most memorable were “Rain” and “Just About Right,” which featured some extended jams that were absolutely jaw dropping. Some of the words to “Rain” I believe were very thought provoking like “I can’t see a single storm cloud in the sky but I can sure smell the rain.” The human condition is the main topic of their songs so everything hits home just right.

After a 15 minute break the Outlaws came out opening with “Love Song.” This is one of their more famous tracks amongst many. I was especially impressed with their latest material from their studio recording It’s All About Pride. They treated the audience to the title track and “Born To Be Bad,” which was a killer rocker that brought the house down. I cannot tell you how many times people got to their feet to acknowledge this great band with standing ovations. This response was well deserved to be sure.

I was little surprised to hear their most famous song, “Green Grass and High Tides Forever” to close out the set. I was thinking what they will do for an encore now, if there is one. Well they gave us their encore with an old favorite “Ghost Riders.”

What I got out of this night besides incredibly entertaining music was that this band of brothers have their heart and soul into their music and give the audience everything they have every night. I really appreciated the heartfelt message coming from Henry Paul regarding members that have passed over the years and how they intend on carrying on the history of the band’s music for quite some time

If you ever have a chance to catch them do so, they will give you a performance that will be lodged in your memory for the rest of your days.

Rock on gents! You closed out my concert coverage for the year with some fireworks and pure joy, thank you!

Holiday/Country Review: Classic Christmas Country Album-Various Artists

Release Date: October 27, 2014
Label: RLG/Legacy

Christmas songs come in every flavor and this year its colorful twinkle lights wrapped around a pair of boots. Sixteen well-loved holiday tracks from artists throughout their careers are showcased in this Walmart exclusive album just in time for the holiday season. From the ever popular “Mele Kalikimaka” from Christmas Vacation to “Jingle Bell Rock,” there are classics abundant.

The first song in this merry little lineup is “Christmas Time’s a Comin’” performed by Patty Loveless. With jingle bells and a plucky little guitar number the song ramps up and starts jamming. Full of country twang, images of a country holiday celebration filled with family and friends appear. Food, candles, hearts yearning for home and snow pack this powerhouse of a song.

“Rockin’ Little Christmas” starts off with a sexy saxophone solo and on come the jingle bells and the sweet and sexy voice of Deborah Allen. A cross between country and rock, this song is a go getter. No wall flowers need apply. Only delicious love scenes allowed! Slip on those boots and get ready to do the boot scootin boogie all night long. Love and longing under the Christmas tree with a passel of mistletoe to bring down the house. This song smokes trials through the snow and that Frosty had better watch out!

“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” is the last song on the album. Sung by Martina McBride with a mellow multi-instrumentation providing a snowy backdrop of holiday bliss, this song is a fine end to an album filled with holiday songs and memories from years gone by. Her voice is crisp and pure, giving voice to all of our hopes and dreams for a Christmas filled with love and laughter.

This Walmart exclusive is a great compilation of songs from many country performers spanning many years in the industry. I found several favorites on this album and discovered a couple of new ones. So have yourself a Merry Christmas and if you get the chance to pick up this album, do. And please, pass the eggnog.

Track Evaluation: Patty Mattson-Dear Mama

Patty Mattson has a new album out with several country flavored tracks. One of her favorites and mine is "Dear Mama."

Everyone has a special connection to their mother and the track is a heartfelt message to Patty's or your own. Anyway you look at it-it touches you in some way.

It doesn't hurt that it has a bouncing country tune to get across all those words either! Great music and lyrics are all you need to make a message clear and it sure looks like this lady was successful on "Dear Mama."

MuzikMan Rating: 4/5

More About Patty Mattson:

http://pattymattson.com

Prior to her record releases, Mattson had her songs included on the soundtracks of several motion pictures including Friends and Lovers starring Robert Downy Jr. and Claudia Schiffer as well as Ghosts Never Sleep starring Faye Dunaway, Tony Goldwyn, and Sean Young.

This is just the tip of the iceberg for this talented singer songwriter as Mattson continues to add to her Recording, Songwriting, and Voice Over successes with her flourishing companies Madison Music & VO and Studio19 Songs. Armed with an impressive performer’s resume she has landed feature roles such as the Peacock Centerpiece for Pier One, the Speedtalker for Toshiba, Lollipop in the Indy film Into Temptation with Jeremy Sisto and Kristin Chenowith, and the soul singing karoke nun in NBC’s Rhythm & Blues. She also appeared in Unsolved Mysteries and What Should You Do.

Patty Mattson, this curvaceous, quadruple threat for songwriting, unforgettable vocal stylings, acting, and mellifluous and character-driven voice overs is pure magic.  Watch, listen, and know.

Track Evaluation: Stolen Rhodes-Gone

Stolen Rhodes is straight ahead rock band with country and blues influences weaving through their power packed stories.

"Gone" is a great example of their total command in one track as they dish it all out for your pleasure. They are solid in the vocal department and musically sound.

If you dig rock, country or classic southern rock like Lynyrd Skynyrd or Molly Hatchet...give this band a spin because this rock candy!

MuzikMan Rating: 4.5/5

More About Stolen Rhodes:

http://www.stolenrhodes.com/

"I usually describe us as American or Americana Rock to most folks," explains Stolen Rhodes' singer/multi-instrumentalist Matt Pillion. "If folk music were turned up to eleven and included guitar solos, I think you would get in the ballpark of what we are. Our music pulls no punches, and we always speak from the heart while in verse."

Upon hearing the group's new EP, 'Slow Horse,' you're sure to agree with Pillion's assessment. Listing such renowned/respected acts as Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Pearl Jam as their main influences, the group (which also includes guitarist Kevin Cunningham, bassist Dan Haase, and drummer Eric Skye) has already garnered rave reviews from the press, including the following blurbs:

"Stolen Rhodes' songs easily could have existed in 1975; there are lots of infectious melodies, rousing choruses and juicy guitar solos." -- phillyburbs.com

"I was swept away by their romantic notions; of big dreams, endless love, and freedom. I could also get lost in the neverending choruses just as much as the guitars and drums and keys that make this album a long jam session that I didn’t want to end." -- relatemag.com

Rockabilly Guitarist Danny B. Harvey Releases A New Album With Former Devil’s Daughter Mysti Moon!

Los Angeles, CA - Get ready to stomp along with a brand new set of recordings from veteran rockabilly guitar slinger of The Head Cat (with Lemmy & Slim Jim Phantom), 69 Cats, and The Rockats, Danny B. Harvey! The album is called Hell Cat Stomp and is an inspired collaboration between Harvey & sultry vocalist Mysti Moon, formerly of The Devil’s Daughters, to be released on Cleopatra Records October 14!

Harvey explains the origin of the project, “The songs were inspired by old timey singers from the Blues, Jazz and Country music fields. We wanted simple arrangements with great vocal and guitar performances. The original plan was that the album would be all cover versions, making sure we stayed true to the era we were honoring, but after a few songs I got inspired and had to write some original compositions.”

He goes on to share about the making of the album, “Working with Mysti has always been an amazing experience, since first meeting her when I produced the Devil’s Daughters. I’ve been floored with the depth of her vocals talents. She is one of the best artists I’ve ever worked with and being as young as she is, she has a long career in front of her.”

In sum, “This is the album I’ve always wanted to do, paying homage to my heroes from the early days of Jazz, Blues and Country music. The very beginning of modern music, long before Rock’n’Roll existed! Mysti is the perfect collaborator for me to use on this project as her voice and enthusiasm inspires me to make a great record. We sweated, sang and played our hearts out and made an album we’re both very proud of!

Country Music Icon Philip Claypool Releases 'Come On Back Home' - His Most Personal, Revealing Album Yet!

Philip Claypool is the real deal. His passion, songwriting and drive to connect to the listener is why he is a success!

Nashville, TN - Much to the excitement of his fans worldwide, legendary country music singer/songwriter Philip Claypool has released 'Come On Back Home', a new album poised to be his most personal, revealing album yet. Says Philip, “I wanted to do an album that expressed the core personality of who I am as a singer on both fun and emotional levels. I also, wanted the album to exhibit songs of inspiration, and on the other side of the coin my love of a good gut-buster honkytonk song.”

The album is produced by veteran hit producer Michael Lloyd. Lloyd has produced more than 100 gold and platinum records, as well as many number one singles. Says Michael, “I've been a record producer for many years, and it's been my good fortune to have been involved with many great artists and projects. It's not often that an artist comes along who is special – but Philip Claypool is truly special. I'm amazed by his talent. He has a unique way of touching you with his passion and emotion, and on his latest CD, 'Come On Back Home', he's at his best.”

As with his previous releases, Philip is writer on the bulk of the album's material and he teamed up with his pal and co-writer Jeff Silbar (“Wind Beneath My Wings”) on many of the key tracks. Most every song has a real personal life story behind it.

The album also features two additional cuts from top Nashville songsmiths and a stellar rendition of Eddie Arnold's “You Don’t Know Me” that Claypool delivers with true Memphis soul. Philip adds, “My producer Michael Lloyd and I assembled the very best players in Nashville and we cut 14 tracks in only 2 days. I had worked with most of the guys on my previous projects and it was like a band getting back together. It was natural and most of all fun! Many of the vocals on the album were cut live on the first or second take.

Philip Claypool describes himself as a Southern-singer-songwriter. Growing up in Memphis, TN, he was raised with a love of music, wildlife conservation, hunting and the outdoors. With many musical influences ranging from gospel to rock and country, Claypool pulls together many diverse techniques in his music, but the main defining quality of his music is his emotional and passionate performances. He puts his heart and soul into everything he records and performs. 'Come On Back Home' is all about the real Claypool, not just another polished, picture-perfect mold of the stereotypical country artist. In this album, fans will be able to see the full revealing of the honest, transparent and passionate Philip Claypool they've come to know and love.

“Philip Claypool is the real deal. A man that loves what he does and does it well. He has passion when he sings and not only takes the listener to a special place but he is right there with them. Every song is life, his life, your life and my life. We can all relate to every word.” - George Davis, KBXB Sikeston MO.

“This former Curb artist of the 1990s is back with a chin-up, positive-think rocker. I love his drawling phrasing on this driving, relentless production. The icing on the cake is that it is extremely well-written.” - Robert K. Oermann, Music Row

In support of the new album, Philip plans to tour on regional and national levels. There are lyric videos out on YouTube for the singles “Strong One” and “Come On Back Home”, as well as a fun homemade video of the track “Jack Daniel and Mr. Jim Beam”.

Nashville, TN - On her new album Bridges – being released on July 8th thru Cleopatra Records - 18-year-old singer and songwriter Mary Sarah duets with some of country music’s biggest names on 12 captivating songs. Amazed by the Texas ingénue’s voice and talent, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Vince Gill, the Oak Ridge Boys, the late Ray Price and others all signed on to sing with Mary Sarah on their most iconic hits. Dolly’s “Jolene,” Willie’s “Crazy” and Merle’s “The Fightin’ Side of Me” are just a few of the songs interpreted by Mary Sarah and her A-list collaborators.

American release of the 'Bridges' album.

Now, Mary Sarah is ready for country fans to hear it and connect those who love traditional country with those who follow today’s more polished sound. “I see Bridges as something that spans now and then,” she says, “and brings that music back over to this generation.”

Country Americana Singer/Songwriter Katie Garibaldi to Release Her Seventh CD, Recorded at Tiny Telephone Studios in San Francisco, on July 15th, 2014

San Francisco, CA – With the release of her seventh full-length album and a brand new endorsement deal with Two Old Hippies, who worked with Breedlove Guitars to build her a new custom-made guitar, Katie Garibaldi has proven herself to be an artist with undeniable talent and lasting appeal. Based in the golden city of San Francisco, this determined and enthusiastic singer/songwriter/guitarist is an avid national touring performer who has amassed a devoted fan base, due in large part to her engaging live shows and a personal connection to her listeners through her music. Katie sings with an emotional resonance that, combined with her catchy melodic songs and her soulfully expressive vocals, captures her audience wherever she performs. While she’s been compared to household names such as Sheryl Crow, Jewel, and Taylor Swift, Katie has a charismatic musical style all her own wherein her equally pop- and country-tinged folk-rock gives her a distinct and edgy sound—Americana with sparkling and memorable melodies.

This new album, Follow Your Heart, was recorded at John Vanderslice’s Tiny Telephone Recording Studios in San Francisco, CA, and engineered by Ian Pellicci. The band includes Katie Garibaldi on vocals and acoustic guitar (as well as writer and producer of the entire album), Memphis-based Kevin Blair on electric and upright acoustic bass, and Bay Area local Todd Richardson on drums and percussion. Magik*Magik Orchestra also makes an appearance on the album, which features Michelle Kwon (The Delphi Trio) on cello and Philip Brezina (Brothers Comatose) on violin. Katie was fortunate to have the opportunity to co-write and arrange the string sections with Magik*Magik Orchestra artistic director, Minna Choi. Other notable players include Max Butler (pedal steel, mandolin, and ukulele), Sylvain Carton (flute, clarinets, and saxophones), Henry Hung (trumpet, trombone), Matt Blackett (electric guitar), and Shawn Shaffer (harmonica). Follow Your Heart contains 13 new tracks, which include her most personal recorded songs to date, all of which hearken back to her simple yet powerful message about the importance of having the conviction to follow your heart.

Follow Your Heart is Katie’s first full-length release of all new compositions since her award winning Next Ride Out album in 2009. In that time, the Americana songstress has toured the country and accomplished many exciting achievements, including being named a Music Connection Magazine Top 100 Live Unsigned Artist and being featured on the cover of The Indie Bible four different times. Most notably, Katie received the Songwriter of the Year award in 2012 from Songsalive!, the largest international non-profit membership organization and social community for songwriters and composers.

Follow Your Heart will be released worldwide in stores and online July 15th, 2014. Katie will headline a CD Release party on July 12th at Neck Of The Woods, located at 406 Clement Street in San Francisco, with special guests Mike Annuzzi and The Devil’s Chord opening.

Katie then heads to Nashville for several shows, including a performance at her sponsor’s store, Two Old Hippies, and at the summer 2014 NAMM event. Late summer and fall tour dates will also be announced on her website in the next few weeks.

Follow Your Heart will be released Direct-to-Fans via Katie’s website on Tuesday July 1st, 2014, and Digitally and Physically worldwide on July 15th, 2014.

Rock/Blues/Country Review: Various-All My Friends Celebrating The Songs & Voice of Gregg Allman

Release Date: May 6, 2014
Label: Rounder Records

The legend of the Allman Brothers Band and its namesake Gregg Allman has transcended time and all barriers for music fans across the globe. They have been credited with being one of the originators of the jam band culture and rightly so. Allman has survived the turbulent times of drug addictions, the loss of his brother Duane and many lineup changes in the band. He has come out the other side of all that and continues to carry on the tradition of great blues rock music to entertain countless fans everywhere that flock to his concerts.

On January 10th this year at the Fox Theater in Atlanta a special event took place. A tribute to the music of Gregg Allman, All My Friends Celebrating The Songs & Voice of Gregg Allman, was recorded and filmed. 4 hours of pure blues rock was presented to a full house of appreciative fans. The set was released this month by roots label Rounder Records and it encompasses two CDs, one DVD and a booklet with several pictures at that event and liner notes. The package folds out into four sections and is presented in a nice cardboard case.

The lineup is a who’s who of music including The Allman Brothers Band, Devon Allman, Trace Adkins, Kenny Aronoff, Jackson Browne, Eric Church, Natalie Cole, Audley Freed, Brantley Gilbert, Vince Gill, Warren Haynes, John Hiatt, Rami Jaffee, Jaimoe, Dr. John, Chuck Leavell, Taj Mahal, Keb’ Mo’, Martina McBride, Pat Monahan, Sam Moore, Jack Pearson, Robert Randolph, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, Don Was and Widespread Panic. Now if that isn’t a good choice to represent your body of work I really don’t have a clue what else could be considering the genre. As it turned out it was an excellent show of respect and replication of Allman’s music. Any fan of a particular artist is understandably hesitant going into something like this. It is natural to feel some doubt of how the music is going to sound compared to the originals. Let me assure you this is an outstanding reproduction of the Allman cannon in every way.

So where does one start with such a comprehensive set? It’s not an easy task when all the tracks are so well done. The band that remained on the stage throughout the performance was incredibly good and obviously why it was easier to reproduce all the songs for the guest vocalist. Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks were a constant force and there was a killer horn section with the usual wall of percussion behind them.

Vince Gill has always been a favorite of mine and thousands of other country music fans and his contribution to the show was stellar. He served up “Multi-Colored Lady” like only he could and I am sure Gregg was pleased. That is one example of several performances that make this set a special treat for rock, blues and country music fans. What is nice to see as well is that Allman is visibly happy and at peace these days. Attitude dictates an overall atmosphere at a concert or anywhere else for that matter, so with that in mind it makes for an out of this world performance from everyone involved including the honored icon.

There are far too many instances of musical clarity and exceptional musical craftsmanship to mention on this set and it would be easy to babble on forever about what you will hear and see on this concert. All I can say is that this one is a keeper and a must have to any Allman fan or blues, rock or country enthusiast. All of those genres are represented here along with some jazz runs that only The Allman Brothers Band could pull off in a live setting. All the pieces of the puzzle came together just as if it was meant to be all along. If there is a rock ‘n’ roll heaven this is what it must be like.
