Haight Street Art Center to Open “The Secret Path: The Art of Roger and Freyja Dean”

SAN FRANCISCO, CA: The Haight Street Art Center will open The Secret Path: The Art of Roger and Freyja Dean, an exhibition of original art works by famed UK artists Roger Dean and his daughter Freyja Dean. The Secret Path will immerse visitors in an extraordinary world where life and landscape invoke the splendors of nature through the visionary imagination of the Deans. The exhibition opens August 25 and will close October 30, 2022, before touring to other venues.

The presenting sponsors of The Secret Path: The Art of Roger and Freyja Dean are Blue Planet Alliance and Chambers Obscura.

“To see the art of Roger and Freyja together in this unique, groundbreaking exhibition is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for visitors to experience the magical environments created by this father-daughter duo,” said Kelly Harris, executive director of the Haight Street Art Center. “Both artists have universal appeal, and we are proud to be able to offer our patrons a chance to be a part of this stunning and psychedelic fantasy.”

Known for his groundbreaking work with Yes and other rock bands, Roger Dean’s six-decade career includes a dazzling range of media and formats. His daughter Freyja has followed in her father’s footsteps, earning international acclaim for her paintings, sculpture, and fabric art. With paintings, drawings, sculptures, and other media, this exhibition connects all facets of the Deans’ wide-ranging and restless imagination.

Visitors to the Art Center will recognize famous paintings that became the artwork for some of Roger’s legendary album covers, as well as studies of his extraordinary design work including his iconic Yes logo. Curated by Roger in consultation with Freyja, the exhibition includes more than 50 works that will furnish patrons with an imaginative and immersive environment that speaks to the challenges of the present while embracing the promise of the future.

“I am honored to help support The Secret Path coming to San Francisco and the work of the Haight Street Art Center in sharing these fantastical worlds through this remarkable exhibition,” said Brian Chambers, co-founder of Chambers Obscura. “I’ve had the pleasure of working with Roger for many years, and through him I have come to appreciate his daughter Freyja’s work as well. She has her own distinctive voice, but not only does she demonstrate how deep the creative genes are in the Dean family, her work complements his in powerful and unexpected ways.”

“I’ve worked with Roger for 35 years and could not be more honored to support The Secret Path at the Haight Street Art Center,” said Blue Planet Alliance Founder Henk Rogers. “In all my years in publishing, I’ve never met an artist as talented and easy to work with as Roger. We’ve worked together on dozens of projects, starting with the cover and logo for the game Super Black Onyx to the Tetris logo, our biggest and most widely known collaboration, for a game that has sold 500 million copies. Roger’s art has enriched us in so many ways.”

Known as the “only member of Yes who doesn’t play an instrument,” Roger Dean is revered as an award-winning album cover artist, yet his talents go far beyond one medium: his work spans fine art to graphic design, architecture to stage sets, from small-scale drawings to stadium-sized vistas. Freyja Dean’s paintings, sculpture, and fabric art chart the relationships between landscapes and life. Her art reveals the narratives of those geographies and beings, illuminating the lessons they can teach us. Together, the art of the Deans guides viewers through a journey filled with stories. Those stories are about magic: the magic in nature, in natural phenomena and formations, in the seasons and the flow of time.

“This exhibition invites viewers to become participants,” Roger Dean notes. “We are all fellow travelers on the secret path of life. The signposts along the way are our art works, but the destination—the future—belongs to everyone.” For the Deans, this exhibition is an important step in that journey. “We must believe in a future worth striving for,” Freyja Dean explains. “For all of us, there is a secret or hidden path whose entirety we cannot see while we live it.”

If you were ever curious about what life was like for a music professional in the 60s and 70s, I have one of the best books for you. Rock And Roll Warrior is an in-depth account of David Libert. He started playing piano at a very early age, much to his dismay, which is a typical story you hear. The difference here is what developed after being forced to take piano lessons by his parents.

I absorbed this book quickly and became utterly engaged from beginning to end. My interest in music, all aspects of it, was a good starting point. However, if you are a music fan and like to read about all the exploits of touring and what goes on, you are in for one hell of a revealing story.

David was in the 60s band The Happenings, a pop band that spawned several hits, and perhaps the most memorable was "See You In September." I remember hearing that song, but I will not tell you when!

David's success in the music industry as a musician and band manager created a fascinating story. His account of his lifelong journey through sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll is a firsthand look at all his exploits touring and many of the colorful characters he met along the way. His stint as Alice Cooper’s Road Manager was very entertaining. His quick thinking and wit led to his success and getting out of some, let's say, uncomfortable situations. He learned lessons from some of the most challenging people in the business and ran the Alice Cooper tours like a well-oiled machine.

While David enjoyed all the decadence of the rock lifestyle, all the ups and downs, then running his agency, getting rich, then becoming a drug dealer to survive was a roller coaster ride you will never forget once you read it all. He had the knack, as they say, of coming out of the shit smelling like a rose. Even after being busted a second time for dealing drugs and being incarcerated, he found a way around everyday prison life, making the best of the situation and putting himself in a favored position. For that, I admired his resilience and his thinking on his feet. His personality and drive were perfect for working in the dog-eat-dog world of the music biz.

From Alice Cooper to the crazy exploits of George Clinton (free your ass, and your mind will follow), he explains in detail what it was like working with these music superstars. The story sheds some light on many of the industry's truths that still apply today. I think in the last few chapters, many musicians will find a positive message and the fortitude to stand up and fight for their art.

David Libert is now in retirement living comfortably with the love of his life and his dogs in California. Now is the perfect time to release his life story. So many people over the years have fallen hard and are part of the story in music. David was the exception that came out on the other side alive and well.

Today is a different world, but I would be willing to bet a lot of the same things still go on, and one, the taking advantage of artists and ripping off their recorded music happens in several different ways. I read nothing in this book that surprised me, and it just validated how crazy the music business can be and how dangerous it is if you fall prey to everything out there, ready to gobble you up and spit you out.

Mixup: Two Musicians Both Named Brian Woodbury Get Their Music Profiles Confused on the Internet and Decide to Make a Song Together

Brian Woodbury is a Los Angeles songwriter, composer and bandleader, who has just released his 9th solo album Rhapsody & Filigree, the Final Volume of his Anthems & Antithets tetralogy, each volume in a distinct musical mood: comic, personal, political & arty.

Brian Woodbury is also the name of a Utah-based jazz trombonist, who last year released his first solo album Dream Feeder.

Except, according to the streaming platforms, they’re both the same person.

When Utah Brian put out his album, LA Brian found his own music and artist profile on Spotify, YouTube, etc. conflated with Utah Brian’s. LA Brian tried to sort out the mess, and reached out to Utah Brian to enlist his help. They figured if they both contacted the streaming platforms, it would be simple to disentangle their online identities.

Not so simple, in fact. Even getting through to someone at the streaming platforms was a challenge. And once they got through, the process for disentangling their identities was frustratingly difficult.

As a joke, LA Brian suggested they really confuse the algorithms by making a song together. They both thought this was a funny idea but then they actually did it.

LA Brian wrote lyrics for “The Other Brian Woodbury,” the true tale of being mistaken for somebody with the same name. In the style of pre-war swing jazz, LA Brian wrote music for an Intro and a Verse and then handed it off to Utah Brian to write music for a Bridge. Together they created an extended Instrumental section, indulging their experimental sides.

They arranged it together, but recorded it in separate studios, with LA Brian singing and bringing in pianist David Witham, bassist Edwin Livingston and drummer Andy Sanesi; and Utah Brian overdubbing himself on 8 trombones, creating a big band horn choir.

LA Brian says, “It’s really a song for anyone about whom misinformation has been perpetuated on the internet. Which, I think, is just about everyone.”

The resulting song is now out as the second track on LA Brian’s newly-released Rhapsody & Filigree album. And since the collaboration worked out so well, LA Brian invited Utah Brian to play trombone on 3 other songs that appear on the album.
