King Crimson To Release 5 Discs Of Live Music In Their "Audio Diary 2014 - 2018"

Back in 1969, King Crimson made its reputation as a live band – initially with the hipsters, scene setters & other musicians who frequented the likes of the Speakeasy & The Marquee in London, then, more broadly, with a breakthrough gig to a vast mainstream audience as guests on the bill with The Rolling Stones in Hyde Park in July of that year. So it’s appropriate that the current incarnation of King Crimson was to be found just opposite the entrance to Hyde Park at the end of June 2019 almost 50 years on from that concert, playing a trio of packed gigs at the Royal Albert Hall.

Then, as now, it’s the live performance that’s key to the band.

The current line-up - the longest surviving in Crimson’s half century of existence – started touring in September 2014 & hasn’t stopped since. Now routinely spoken of in terms of ‘best live band in the world’, the band’s reputation has been further enhanced via a series of live releases beginning with the “Live at the Orpheum” mini-album (2015) & running to last year’s 3CD/Blu-Ray “Meltdown” set, drawn from a series of concerts in Mexico in 2017.

With a vast repertoire covering material from the debut album “In the Court of the Crimson King” (including ‘Moonchild’ which was never performed in 1969) through to works from “Lizard” which, likewise, was never performed at the time, Crim classics from “Islands”, “Larks’ Tongues in Aspic”, “Red” & other studio albums, through to compositions from Fripp’s solo album “Exposure” (‘Breathless’), radical reinterpretations of 80s material (‘Neurotica’, ‘Indiscipline’), to songs from the current KC band precursor album by Jakszyk, Fripp Collins (‘A Scarcity of Miracles’, ‘The Light of Day’) and newly written pieces for this line-up, (‘Meltdown’, ‘Radical Action’), this 5CD set provides a comprehensive overview of 5 years’ worth of concerts – one year per CD – with performances selected from that first concert in Albany New York in 2014, to the band’s penultimate 2018 concert in Tokyo.

CD1is fully mixed from multi-track tapes by Robert Fripp & Jakko Jakszyk, while the other 4 CDs are taken from the band’s stereo soundboard recordings, the most accurate recorded representation of the live band in the opinion/ears of many of the band’s hardcore fans.

Packaged in a rigid slipcase featuring artwork from the beloved and dearly missed Francesca Sundsten, containing 3 gatefold sleeves containing the 5 individual CDs, plus a 24-page full color booklet with previously unseen photographs.

Since the band's return to live performance in 2014, with critically acclaimed sell-out shows all over the world including two defining shows at the Roman amphitheatre in Pompeii, the audience has been reinvented, as much as the band itself:

“In Pompeii, a large percentage of the audience was young couples; KC moved into the mainstream in Italy. I walked onstage knowing that this band's position in the world has changed level.” Robert Fripp

The band's packed three-hour shows regularly include material from twelve of their thirteen studio albums, including many of the songs from their seminal 1969 album In The Court of the Crimson King, described by Pete Townshend, as an “uncanny masterpiece”. The new 8-piece line-up plays many historic pieces which Crimson have never played live, as well as new arrangements of Crimson classics – “the music is new whenever it was written”. There are also new instrumentals and songs, as well as the compositions by the three drummers, Pat Mastelotto, Gavin Harrison and Jeremy Stacey, which are a regular highlight. A unique show, where eight of the best musicians in the world play music without distraction or adornment.

Physical music releases include:

February: King Crimson 1972 – 74 – the second boxed set of 6LPs from Larks' Tongues in Aspic to the expanded USA in 200 gram vinyl.

May: Heaven and Earth: Multi-disc CD/ DVD-a/Blu-Ray set covering the period from the late 1990s – 2008 – completing the availability of all King Crimson studio albums in 5.1 multi-channel audio.

October: Complete 1969 Recordings CD/DVD-a/Blu-Ray set – completing the availability of all King Crimson studio albums on Blu-Ray. A vinyl set of 1969 recordings is also being planned

Other planned music releases include: 200 gram vinyl editions of Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair, the 2CD 2019 King Crimson tour box – 6th in the series of releases issued to accompany each tour from 2014 onwards

50 Collectors' Club Releases:
2019 will see the release of CLUB48, CLUB49 and CLUB50 - the final three in the Collectors Club series, taking it 50 releases in the band's 50th year. CLUB48 will be a recently discovered board recording of the concert in Newcastle on 8th December 1972 by the complete Larks Tongues in Aspic line-up before Jamie Muir left the band.

King Crimson 2019 Tour - Celebrating 50 Years

As part of a series of events and releases for their 50th anniversary, King Crimson's 2019 tour will include special concerts across three continents, including both festivals and headline shows.

Since the band's return to live performance in 2014, with critically acclaimed sell-out shows all over the world including two defining shows at the Roman amphitheatre in Pompeii, previously home to Pink Floyd, the audience has been reinvented, as much as the band itself:

“In Pompeii, a large percentage of the audience was young couples; KC moved into the mainstream in Italy. I walked onstage knowing that this band's position in the world has changed level.” Robert Fripp

With its fiftieth anniversary, it seems that the wider world is finally ready to embrace King Crimson. A process that began with Kanye West's sampling of “21st Century Schizoid Man” for his 2010 hit “Power”, now sees their song “Starless” as the soundtrack to the opening scenes of Nicholas Cage's new 2018 film “Mandy”.

The band's packed three-hour shows regularly include material from twelve of their thirteen studio albums, including many of the songs from their seminal 1969 album “In The Court of the Crimson King”, described by Pete Townshend, as an “uncanny masterpiece”. “MELTDOWN” – A BluRay filmed at the band’s five sell-out shows in Mexico City in 2017, was released in October 2018.

“COSMIKC F*KC” – an in-depth documentary of King Crimson will appear in 2019.

“Jimi Hendrix saw them at the Marquee in 1969 and declared them to be the best band in the world. In many ways, almost half a century later, they still are.” - ERIC THIESSEN, All About Jazz.

“Fripp and his band offered an impeccable performance in two stages. No melodies, no flapping, only musicians at the top of their art.” - IAN BUSSIÈRES La Presse, Quebec

“The band finally reaps all that it has sown in its many transformations...the king is not dead, far from it, and they still rejoice.” - REJEAN BEAUCAGE, Voir.ca

“Crimson has never sounded more complete, or more joyous, on stage than it does now.” - JORDAN ZIVITZ, Montreal Gazette

“The uniqueness of seeing each of these seasoned musicians working is near indescribable and has to be experienced live to fully embrace their vision - think of eight master painters working in their own style, but on a common canvas, and you begin to get the idea of things.” - WE HEART MUSIC, Minneapolis

“On our final evening at the festival, we were witness to the concert that inevitably proved to be its highlight...The blend of mood, melody, ambiance and atmosphere dazzled the audience, which responded with frequent standing ovations.” - LEE ZIMMERMAN, Goldmine Magazine

King Crimson Guitar Legend Trey Gunn Presents "Intro to Modes" 8-Week Music Course - October 15 to December 8, 2018

Work directly with Trey Gunn on a weekly basis in this group course.

King Crimson guitar legend Trey Gunn is presenting “Intro to Modes”; an 8-week music course that runs from October 15 to December 8, 2018.

For all instrumentalists and singers.

In this course we will break down one of the basic building blocks of music - the modes - into digestible parts, both sonically and theoretically, so they can be used with ease.

This course will:
Help you to immediately find your ground in a piece of music
Give you flexibility when improvising
Give you greater color choices when developing your own compositions
Help you grasp command of the core material of music
Give you a long-term pathway to hear deeper into the relationships of the notes

This course is designed to work for all players:
Beginning players - We'll start with the basics.
Intermediate players - Hone the fundamentals in your hearing for improved playing and writing
Advanced players - Find the gaps in your melodic hearing. Apply practices to close the gaps and take your playing further

Learn to play confidently while capturing the unique quality of each mode in your improvisations and compositions. This ease only comes from the deep exploration based on how you hear, in your own particular way. This course breaks down that exploration into its core essence, step-by-step.

- - -

When most musicians play by thinking in modes, or scales, they tend towards using all the tones equally and without their full meaning. This results in bland musical lines. Lines that come across like white light where, instead, there could be gorgeous color.

How a painter uses color is a useful analogy for working with the modes. Any musical idea can be tinted with one of the modes. The idea remains essentially the same; but the color of the music changes based on which mode you are using.

This course is designed to establish these “modal” differences in your ear so you can use them as you need to, much as a painter pulls from his or her palette of colors.

Learning about modes isn't about the information. The information is easy. Learning this material, the way I think we should, is about getting to know each tone intimately within its context - the mode's center of gravity, or tonal center.

This course will use a progression of practices to develop our sense of each note and how that note fits into its mode.

This is an oversimplification; but based on many years of practice, study and playing I have honed an approach to go directly into the sounds.

First, we learn the sounds. The information can come afterward, simply to help us organize.

- - -

This will be a type of correspondence course with info/practices being presented each week and all of us digesting it together via a Google Group. There is no real-time participation, so any time-zone or personal schedule will fit with our work together.

The course will adapt to the people participating and how things develop as we go along. But the general curriculum will be based on the following progression:

Week 1
General Concepts of Modes
Language And Method For The Course
Root, Fifth, Octave (+ listening/singing)

Week 2
Thirds (+ listening puzzles)

Week 3
Sevenths (+ extra singing)

Week 4

King Crimson is a band that continues to defy conventional expectations. As listeners to last year's rush-released official bootleg from June 2017 recorded in Chicago discovered, this band gets better by the year. Given the amount of rehearsals, practicing, constantly expanding repertoire base (nearly six hours' worth of material ready to select from on any given night), wealth of experience among musicians, technicians/sound crew, more comfortable traveling arrangements, better PA systems/mixing desks & the fact that the band is playing, for the most part, in purpose built theatres rather than the more imaginatively named but sonically challenged venues that hosted rock gigs in previous decades, this should come as no surprise. But it does. Perhaps it’s still part of the Rock 'n' Roll myth – the “hope I die before I get old” thought process that seems forever associated with rock music that's proved so difficult to alter. Whatever the reason, the concept of a band maturing, re-inventing itself and being able to present music from a lengthy history in recognizable but ever-changing ways, still with same sense of wonder as if it were newly-written, remains, if not unique, certainly notable.

A few weeks after the Chicago concert, the first part of 2017's tour reached its final destination – five nights of concerts in Mexico City. All of the concerts were recorded and filmed with a view to issuing a definitive document of Crimson live in 2017 and Meltdown is the result of that process. With over two hours of HD filmed performance and three hours of audio, Meltdown offers a comprehensive overview of a band at the very peak of its performing ability.

King Crimson's Meltdown in Mexico will be released on September 28th and will be distributed by Amped Distribution.

Legendary King Crimson Violinist David Cross To Release New Collaborative Album "Crossing The Tracks"

Featuring guest appearances by Sonja Kraushofer, Anne-Marie Hurst, Ofra Haza, Kimberly Freeman, Marion Küchenmeister & Eva O

Los Angeles - Renowned electric violinist David Cross, best known for his work with King Crimson and prolific solo career, presents this new collection of studio recordings featuring a diverse array of styles and moods!

The collaborative album includes both instrumental tracks as well as vocal performances by guest singers Sonja Kraushofer of L'Ame Immortelle, Anne-Marie Hurst of Skeletal Family, acclaimed Israeli singer Ofra Haza, Christian Death vocalist Eva O and more!

“Crossing the Tracks” is an exciting new departure for me.

Cleopatra Records and producer Jurgen Engler presented me with twelve tracks and gave me free reign to play on all of them, hence 'Crossing the tracks.'

This was an unusual situation for me as I am generally composer/performer/producer, albeit in collaboration with other band members, and I wasn't sure how I would fare as a 'session' player.
However the lure of artistic freedom and a new musical challenge was too strong to resist.

I wanted to stay true to the existing compositions and performances by the other artists and yet create an impact on the music by adding melody, string parts and solos. I surprised myself by having real fun doing this - I just had to play the violin and follow my instincts (leaving those difficult production decisions to Jurgen!).

I love the cover artwork - heading for the light at the end of the tunnel without getting derailed!

David Cross June 2018

David Cross is currently wrapping up a tour with Italian prog rockers Le Orme and will continue to book performances through 2018!
