Album Preview: OH-Synemotion

New Progressive Rock Metal Album - SynemotionOH. - Progressive Rock and Metal

The progressive rock/metal artist OH. released two singles, “Run Away” and “Synemotion” from her upcoming vinyl and digital album Synemotion set to be released on April 24, 2015.

The singles and pre-orders of the digital download and the Limited Edition Double Gatefold vinyl are available now on Bandcamp and iTunes.

The album Synemotion, is a journey through the complex emotional states we experience when we are overwhelmed by concerns and fears – escapist feelings in the song, “Run Away”, anger and frustration in “Rumpus” – wanting to cower and hide in “Subterfuge” – longing and nostaglia in “Elegy” and the experience of disappointment and let-down in the song “Deception”. Finally, letting go and receiving the feeling in the song “Reception” – and the awareness and sensation of irony knowing it will all start over again in the “World of Warcraft”.

The title track, “Synemotion” expresses in words this entire journey from pain and fear to release and hope. But most importantly the song uncovers how we cope with pain, fear, disappointment, depression, embarrassment and futility, it uncovers what actually happens to us, when we are overwhelmed by experience, and with a strange twist of perception, gifts the listener a path out of the darkness and despair, into an even more compelling and complex palette of emotions and sensations. The song gives hope and strength to walk through life even with wounds and disfigurement and have an even greater experience than before.

Prog Metal Band Odin's Court To Release Eagerly Awaited Fifth Album 'Turtles All The Way Down'

Progressive Metal for fans of Pink Floyd, Dream Theater, Devin Townsend, Porcupine Tree, HIM, Iron Maiden, and Queen

Baltimore, MD - USA based progressive rock and metal band Odin's Court's eagerly awaited 5th album Turtles All the Way Down will hit the streets on March 3, 2015. After releasing four diverse albums on ProgRock Records internationally, Odin’s Court will release their latest album independently through their own label D2C Studios.

Band leader Matt Brookins commented on the latest album: “On Turtles All the Way Down, our sound is refined with a balance of modern and classic vibes, while still retaining the signature 'Odin's Court' sound. We also have the 'missing piece' that completes us – a new vocalist that can bring the emotion and technicality to the music that it deserves. Dimetrius LaFavors' vocals, combined with the more mature song writing and production, have taken us to the next level.” The artwork was done by French painter J.P. Fournier.

As with all of the Odin's Court full length releases, the newest is a concept album. This album deals with ideas and questions relating to the entire universe – how did it start, where is it going, what makes it tick, what is its purpose, etc. – from the point of view of the individual's mind. It deals with mankind's quest for knowledge, and how that knowledge changes. New discoveries often change humanity's understanding or turn perceptions upside down, sometimes making long held beliefs immaterial. The title refers to the idiom that references “infinite recursion” or in layman's terms, “what came first: the chicken or the egg?”

Brookins commented on the concept: “In a nutshell, Turtles All the Way Down is about the quest for knowledge, and how the human race learns more through experiments, observation, and discoveries over time. New findings may challenge long held beliefs, which in turn may cause deep thoughts in one's mind for how these findings impact personal or social beliefs. While the songs are much more accessible, the music still has serious intricacies for the technical music lover. The melodies and harmonies with the vocals are catchier than our past work, but thematically this album deals with pretty heavy subject matter. For the prog lover, the concept and lyrics are definitely an order of magnitude above 'Nerd Rock' since it is largely inspired by physics. Of course, the other important inspiration is human emotion, as no matter what science may observe, individuals' experiences always have an intangible factor to them that cannot be truly expressed or understood in textbook terms – they have to be learned through life.”

Check out the video to the first single from the album “…But What’s the Question?”: http://youtu.be/hxkk4gavGnE

Brookins explained the meaning behind the song, “The first single from Turtles All the Way Down is ‘…But What’s the Question?’ The song speaks to humanity’s need to question everything, and while asking questions is important towards obtaining knowledge, we may not always be asking the right questions. Environment and genetics contribution towards individuals and social conditioning, which in turn may result in programming people’s perspectives. Perspectives can warp and shadow the way we approach problems or questions, and thus cause people to often ask the wrong questions - which means getting the wrong answers.”

Odin's Court is a Maryland, USA based band that was formed by Matt Brookins in 2001. The band is best described as progressive metal & rock, fusing classic and modern sounds that transcend several genres. In 2013, the band picked up lead vocalist Dimetrius LaFavors; with a voice reminiscent of classic vocalists in the rock, metal, and progressive genres, he added the “final piece” needed to polish off the band's sound, while still maintaining a unique voice. Rick Pierpont, an infectious presence on stage, provides excellent and exciting leads that soar through the music. Brookins provides additional vocals and performs on various instruments as needed, doubling as band producer. The current line up started gigging in 2013, and has been winning over new fans with each show performed.

Odin's Court:
Matt Brookins - Vocalist, Guitarist, Keyboardist, and multi-instrumentalist
Rick Pierpont - Guitarist, Backing Vocalist
Dimetrius LaFavors – Vocalist
Gary Raub – Drummer, Percussionist, and Backing Vocalist
Jason Pierpont – Bassist

Odin's Court has been known to perform energetic live shows in the United States, primarily gigging on the east coast doing festivals, short tours, and one-off performances. The band has shared the stage with many classic and modern greats, including (but not limited too) Symphony X, Spock’s Beard, King’s X, Kamelot, Steve Whiteman (Kix, Funny Money), Sonata Arctica, Helloween, Jon Oliva’s Pain, Zero Hour, Crimson Glory, Circle II Circle, Devin Townsend, Circa, Enchant, and more.

Here's what the press have raved about Odin's Court:

“You just want to sit back and let the music wash over you.” - Hardrock Haven

“The very core of songwriting...is very good so there is plenty to sink your teeth into.” - Metal Revolution

“Odin's Court delivers...heavy riffs, melodic vocals, lush keyboards, and interesting instrumental runs.” - Prog Archives

“A truly impressive effort, with solid songwriting and outstanding musicianship. Terrific melodic prog/metal that gets better with every listen!” – USA Progressive Music

“4.5 out of 5: Turtles All the Way Down is an exceptional album of classic melodic progressive rock and metal…Easily recommended.” – Danger Dog

“Odin's Court mixes metal and hard rock to a tasty menu that you can enjoy anytime.” – Proggies.ch

In closing Matt Brookins has this to impart, “The main message is that life is a beautiful journey and as far as we can observe with empirical results, only happens one. So stop and smell the roses. Question things. Seek knowledge. Learn. Gain experience. Don't believe everything you're told without your own research. Don't be a slave to old ideals or institutions if you have reason to believe new discoveries tell you something else. Form relationships and work to sustain them.”

Rising UK Prog Metal Band HeKz To Release Eagerly Awaited Second Album CAERUS

London, UK - Prog Metal is alive and well in the UK with HeKz's exciting new second release titled CAERUS! Drawing influences in equal parts from heavy metal legends and prog rock luminaries, HeKz seek to take the original progressive metal blueprint and rewrite it for themselves. As ever, the song is king, a trait which sets them apart from many of their peers.

HeKz's debut album TABULA RASA laid a firm foundation, and now follow up effort CAERUS sees the band striving to fuse the two contrasting elements of their sound to produce something truly unique. The familiar cornerstones of the band's style are still present; the commanding vocal delivery of Matt Young and the characteristic twin guitars of Al Beveridge and Tom Smith are this time augmented by the addition of James Messenger's swirling synths and chunky Hammond, all kept in line by the tasteful and precise drumming of Kirk Brandham.

CAERUS is an album of firsts for the band, most notably it marks their debut as a five-piece, alongside a supporting cast of guest musicians including renowned cellist Audrey Riley. This sophomore album is also the first from HeKz to receive a label release, as it will be coming out on the band's own BMH Audio label via Cherry Red Records. Featuring 9 new original tracks, CAERUS will be supported with widespread touring by the band.

Watch the promotional video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPsgmSyXE7k

Here's what the press have been raving about HeKz:

“HeKz aren't your usual progressive metallers … TABULA RASA is akin to classic rock a la Maiden and Priest, but has the bombastic grandiosity of progressive metal titans Dream Theater.” - PROG Magazine

“HeKz have produced a confident & expansive progressive metal album that should set them up well for a bright future. The songs are accessible & immediate. A splendid debut indeed.” - ROCK SOCIETY magazine

“Mature themes, musically & lyrically … It is clear that HeKz take their music very seriously indeed.” - FIREWORKS Magazine

“Imagine Yes and The Darkness writing Tolkien-esque fantasy together over some well-matured ales and you'd have HeKz's brand of confidence-slathered, riff-driven prog metal bombast … Absolutely guaranteed to be the most fun you'll have in weeks!” - TERRORIZER Magazine

“Prog metal with a refreshing edge – none of the mainland Euro metal cliches you get on many albums – and it bodes very well indeed for this band’s future.” - Get Ready To Rock

“There was a good reason that HeKz made it onto my 'best of 2012'. Simply the music shows great maturity and should stand the test of time.” - Dave De La Haye - Breakfast In America, Phoenix Radio

“It's refreshing that a band so young are not frightened to attempt to create material of such complexity.” - MetalDiscovery.com

Opeth is the type of band that is a league of its own.  They are a progressive rock band whose sound has been shaped by a wide range of influences, including death metal, black metal, jazz, blues, and classical, and over the past twenty five years they have given the music world masterpiece after masterpiece.  From their 1994 debut with Orchid to their seminal 2001 release of Blackwater Park and to their move toward a more progressive rock sound with 2008’s Watershedand 2011’s Heritage, Opeth is always an innovative and exciting band.

Hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, Opeth formed in 1990.  After a few line-up changes throughout the years, the band currently consists of Mikael Åkerfeldt (vocals, guitars), Martin Mendez (bass), Martin Axenrot (drums), Fredrik Åkesson (guitars), and Joakim Svalberg (keyboards).  Pale Communion is the band’s eleventh album and another stunning achievement, featuring eight stunning tracks and two live special edition cover tracks of Black Sabbath’s “Solitude” and Hansson de Wolfe United’s “Var kommer barner in.”  With its mix of metal, hard rock, and progressive rock, Pale Communionstands as a sublime testament to Opeth’s musical development.

Beginning listeners on this musical journey is the dazzling “Eternal Rains Will Come.” It has a wonderful progression from its wild and hard-hitting opening to a more subdued middle section with a slight up swing at the end.  It is exciting and almost dreamlike in quality, and makes for one memorable opening track.  The album moves in a swift and pleasant fashion with the melodic “Cusps of Eternity.”  There is a slight menace behind the music to give the song a dark edge.

The epic “Moon Above, Sun Below” is a tower that looms large over the album.  It is a truly atmospheric song that calls to mind barren wastelands and windswept worlds with the forlorn power of the music.  There are moments of intensity that come in short bursts, but the slower moments are the backbone of the song with the emotion that underlies them.  “Elysian Woes” is just right in its sense of loneliness and incurable melancholy.  Taking its name and inspiration from the Italian progressive rock band of the same name, “Goblin” is one instrumental that is a delight with its strangeness and would certainly not be out of place in an Argento film.  It calls to mind tense chase scenes through long corridors and crooked staircases.

“River” is the right mix of light and dark.  It starts bright and sunny like the soundtrack to a pleasant afternoon before the melancholic lyrics really hit and that is just the first part.  The second half of the song is faster and darker like storm clouds swooping in blotting out the sun.  “Voice of Treason” is another dark and heavy song that is sure to be a favorite.  Its menacing atmosphere is matched by the beauty of its harmonies.  The album ends with the breathtaking “Faith in Others.”  From the heart wrenching vocals to the acoustic guitars, it is the perfect touch of melodic melancholy that fans will love.

I think that Pale Communion is a positive example of this band’s musical evolution.  It is does not sound like their old stuff, it is not Blackwater Park or Damnation, and why should it be?  It you want to hear that sound, those albums will always be there to be listened to.  The new does not take away from or taint the old in any way.  Artists need to progress and experiment or else their music will become stale and lifeless, which is something that is easily forgotten when it comes to music of any genre.  As Åkerfeldt says, “It would be complete death for me as a musician to just do one thing.”  Thankfully, he and his bandmates do not and let their diverse influences take them to new musical heights.

Opeth’s Pale Communion is a fine piece of work with some stunning music.  It is just what one has come to expect from this band.  This album is just another brilliant step in their long and fruitful career, and wherever their sound is headed in the years to come, I will be there to listen.  If Pale Communion is any indication of what is to come, I would bet that it is going to be fantastic.  This is one 2014 album that should not be overlooked.

Band Feature: Rainburn-Canvas of Silence

Rainburn is Indo-progressive rock group based in Bangalore India. They informed me of their music and I was immediately impressed with their diversity and complex arrangements.

The stream provided are samples of each track so you get a good idea of where this band is coming from. Because it is more than one track and I was so impressed with this young band I decided to make them our first indie feature on the site.

Canvas of Silence offers "Refuge" and it begins with a reminder of influences from prog metal gods Dream Theater then the vocals kick in and you are further impressed by the range and delivery of that first passage. There is bountiful talent amongst the members of this band. I expect some great things to come from them in the coming years.

Our global communication and awareness is a wonderful thing when it comes to discovering new music. Click on the provided media player to get a taste of prog rock from India!

Progressive Metal Review: Evergrey-Hymns for the Broken

Release Date: September 30, 2014
Label: AFM Records

When it comes to making great music, there is no country who does it quite like Sweden.  It must be something in the air, because this northern land is not in want of talented musicians and bands, especially when it comes to making kick-ass metal music.  With their origins in Gothenburg, the same place that spawned such bands as At the Gates and In Flames, Evergrey have been at it since the mid-90s and are in their best shape yet.

Fronted by Tom S. Englund (guitars, vocals), Evergrey has seen a revolving doors of artists come through, leaving Englund as its only original member.  However, this has not stopped Evergrey, nor has it effected the quality of their music.  The rest of the band consists of Rikard Zander (keyboards), Johan Niemann (bass), Henrik Danhage (guitars), and Jonas Ekdahl (drums).  These are a great group of guys and it really shows on this fantastic and intense album.
Hymns for the Broken starts with the short and mysterious “The Awakening.”  This leads right into “King of Errors,” which comes out with a sound that is loud and majestic and sets the stage for the rest of the album.  There is a real presence here with the soaring guitars, the booming drums, symphonic keyboards, and, not to forget, the harmonious vocals.  Everything just fits together so well and so smoothly.

Announcing itself with authority, “A New Dawn” captivates with its hard and crunchy sound.  The chorus really takes it to new heights, as everything is put into the vocals and it is just gorgeous.  Also, it has a guitar solo that will take your breath away. “Wake a Change” takes the album in a different direction.  It dials it down for a slower and introspective pace, allowing for a more emotional connection.  With its symphonic opening, “Archaic Rage” is heavy on the atmosphere and has an incredible instrumental part that really dazzles.

The second half of the album begins strong with the exciting and demanding “Barricades.”  It is like the soundtrack to a dark fairy tale that will haunt your dreams.  “Black Undertow” carries on in the same dark vein as the previous song.  “Hymns for the Broken” is another towering effort, showcasing everything that is right with this band and album.  The music is dark and crushing, and Englund’s voice just towers over everything, creating that extra emotional affect as it is impossible not to hear the heart in his voice.  With the album nearing its end, the punishing sound of “A Grand Collapse” crushes it with its menacing atmosphere. Closing the album out is “The Aftermath.”  Its somber atmosphere and emotional yearnings are practically cathartic after previous songs and makes for a wonderful conclusion.

We find Evergrey in fine form on Hymns for the Broken.  I think that there is not a song that I would consider bad or out-of-place on the album.  They have weathered their hiatus and line-up changes over the past few years very well, and created one of the top progressive metal albums of the year thus far.  I am excited for what these guys will do next. Until then, we have Hymns for the Broken to enjoy.

DREAM THEATER to Release “Breaking the Fourth Wall” DVD on September 30

Dream Theater in 2014
Grammy-nominated progressive metal titans–have announced the release of Breaking The Fourth Wall (Live From The Boston Opera House), a live Blu-Ray / DVD set of the band’s one-of-a-kind performance from the Boston Opera House on March 25, 2014. Produced by the band’s own John Petrucci, filmed and directed by Pierre and François Lamoureux, and mixed and mastered by Richard ChyckiBreaking The Fourth Wall (Live From The Boston Opera House) is over 2 hours in length, capturing the special evening, which featured guest performances from The Berklee College of Music Orchestra and Choir. Breaking The Fourth Wall (Live From The Boston Opera House) arrives September 30th.

The collection will be available in multiple configurations including Blu-Ray, a 2 DVD set, and a webstore deluxe exclusive Blu-Ray/3 CD set with poster, all currently available for pre-order via the Roadrunner Records webstore. Furthermore, Dream Theater have premiered a video of The Looking Glass (Live) taken from Breaking The Fourth Wall (Live From The Boston Opera House) which can be streamed on the band’s official YouTube Channel. All pre-orders for the webstore exclusive will receive an instant download The Looking Glass (Live).

Dream Theater’s John Petrucci commented on the special event saying, “In many ways, this was a huge homecoming for the band given the history of Dream Theater’s origins and ties with Berklee. With John and I both being alumni and Mike having been a professor at the college for 10 years, we saw the opportunity to perform together with the students of Berklee as a tremendous thrill and honor. We are extremely grateful for everyone’s hard work in making this special event a reality and to all who participated.” He continued, “All of the Berklee College instrumentalists and vocalists did an outstanding job that night and it was awesome to have one of its students, Eren Başbuğ orchestrate and conduct them live at the Opera House after having been a part of our latest studio release in the same capacity. Dream Theater has always had a great connection to the city of Boston and we knew that against the backdrop of the beautiful Opera House, this would end up being a historic stop on our Along For The Ride world tour and an evening most definitely worth capturing on video. Beautifully filmed and directed by Pierre Lamoureux and brilliantly mixed and mastered by Richard Chycki, this is in my opinion, a major highlight in our nearly 30 year career as a band. We are eagerly anticipating its release this fall and really hope that everyone enjoys it!

This past year Dream Theater earned a second Grammy nomination for “Best Metal Performance” for the single The Enemy Inside from their current self-titled worldwide smash album (released September 24, 2013 on Roadrunner Records). Dream Theater made a spectacular debut this past fall, topping Billboard’s “Hard Rock Albums” chart while simultaneously entering at #7 on the overall Billboard 200. The extraordinary chart position marked the group’s third consecutive top 10 debut, and also saw Dream Theater making top 5 chart debuts in Japan, Germany, Italy, Canada, Argentina, Switzerland, Holland, and Finland, as well as top 10 debuts in Denmark, Austria, and Norway, with career high debuts in the United Kingdom and Australia. The band recently announced new tour dates which will see them bring their spectacular live show to South America, Asia and Australia later this fall.
