Former Yes Man Jon Anderson Gets Close to the Edge...and the Audience

jon-anderson-0220.jpg

Classic-rock fans might not see the connection between intricate, musically adventurous progressive rock and all-you-can-eat shrimp and shuffleboard tournaments. But increasingly, fans of this genre -- or Southern rock, or blues, or country, and even Rick Springfield or KISS -- have gathered on the high seas, on cruise ships packed with hardcore fans enjoying concerts, Q&A sessions, workshops and...shrimp.

This month, Jon Anderson -- the legendary former lead singer of Yes -- will embark on the "Progressive Nation at Sea" jaunt, while his former bandmates headline "Cruise to the Edge" in April. Anderson, who plays an intimate and career-spanning show at Dosey Doe this coming Monday, has done a couple of these events and grown to like them, despite his initial reservations.

"It ends up being a good time for me and my wife," he says in a high voice that lends credence to the fact that he does not sing in falsetto. "And this time, we've got a balcony and a patio. And we won't eat too much!"

On this adventure, Anderson will do a solo show, take part in a Q&A with fans, and sit in with Mike Portnoy's prog group Transatlantic. As to the wisdom of being in a confined area at sea with some of his most rabid fans, Anderson says he always uses a little Star Wars approach to not being mobbed.

"I usually do the Obi-Wan Kenobi thing," he says. "Just go through areas with groups and say 'we can pass.'"

Anderson's current tour mixes Yes' classic rock warhorse tunes (of course), solo material, collaborations with other artists like Vangelis, and a seemingly unstoppable flow of new music. It's a lower-key affair that the stadium and amphitheater locations he used to play with Yes.

It's the direct result of a journey he began about six years ago after recovering from the vocal difficulties that began in 2004 and saw the cancellation of a 2008 Yes tour. It led to the group he co-founded jettisoning him rather than wait any longer for his recovery.

He was replaced with Benoit David, the very Anderson-sounding lead vocalist of a Yes tribute band (their current lead singer is Jon Davison).

"People were very receptive to my solo shows," says Anderson, asserting that he's fine now and "sings every day" to keep his voice in shape. "And if I'm having a good time, the audience is as well."
Along with Deep Purple, Yes is probably the highest-profile act not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame who absolutely should be. Both were on the initial ballot for induction this year, but didn't make the final cut.

And while it speaks to what many fans of hard rock, metal and prog-rock see as a bias against their favored genres, Anderson is confident that the Hall will soon say yes to Yes.

"Bands like Yes and Deep Purple and Jethro Tull and Emerson, Lake & Palmer have sold millions of records, and we actually connected musical eras," he says. "It's something I don't dwell on much, but I think if it happens, I'll be very happy, especially for the fans."

He also says that's the most likely chance for him to reunite with his former band members -- if only for a few songs at the one-off ceremony.

"I have communication with them for a few business matters, but generally, they are doing their thing. I'm in touch with Alan [White, drummer] now and again because we were very close. But Steve [Howe, guitar] and Chris [Squire, bass], not really. We all have our lives to live. And you just get on with things."

Coming up Friday: Anderson on the development of Yes, the term "prog rock," how the Internet has changed making music forever, and playing Houston's "Space Dome" in the '70s. He plays Dosey Doe, 25911 I-45 N., 8 p.m. Monday, February 24.

Ian Anderson Confirms New Gerald Bostock Album

Martin Kielty at 10:40am February 3 2014

                        Ian Anderson band

Jethro Tull mainman Ian Anderson has confirmed his solo studio album Homo Erraticus will be released on April 14 via Kscope – and it’s another “collaboration” with icon Gerald Bostock.

The Prog Award winner brought the 1972 character back to life in 2012 album Thick As A Brick 2. Now he’s taken the story further.

The label explains: “Following a 40-year political career, Bostock reunited with Anderson, taking the role of tour manager on a string of shows. Homo Erraticus marks his return to songwriting, and it’s based on an unpublished manuscript by amateur historian Ernest T Parritt (1965-1928).

“In Homo Erraticus Parrit examines key events in British history, with a string of prophecies stretching the current day and the future. Visions of past lives caused by the delirium of malaria generate the characters through whose eyes the stories are told, including a nomadic Neolithic settler, an Iron Age blacksmith, a Christian month, a turnpike innkeeper – and even Prince Albert.”

The release is backed with an extensive UK tour on which the album will be played in full alongside a set of Tull classics, “updated with video and theatrics.”

Steven Wilson Bids Farewell To Blackfield

blackfield
Bowing out: Wilson, right, with Geffen

Steven Wilson has announced his upcoming live appearances with Blackfield will be his farewell to the band.

He started out as an equal partner in the project alongside Aviv Geffen in 2001 – but due to his solo commitments he appeared only as a guest on last year’s Blackfield IV album. Now he’s confirmed he’ll take no further part in the band after their upcoming tour, which kicks off in London next week.

Wilson says: “Unfortunately, due to increasing activities with my solo work and other new projects, these be my final shows with Blackfield.

“For this reason the set list will draw mainly from the first two albums, which were the ones that myself and Aviv collaborated on most closely.

“Aviv will continue recording and touring as Blackfield with new collaborators – but for me this is going to be a ‘thank you and farewell’ so I would love to see you there.”

Tour dates

Feb 05: London Koko
Feb 06: Paris Le Trianon
Feb 07: Antwerp Trix
Feb 09: Amsterdam Paradiso

Rush Plan Anniversary Edition Of Debut Album

rush

Rush are preparing a 40th anniversary release of their self-titled debut album, it’s been reported.

The band are taking some time off after a colossal world tour on the back of acclaimed 2012 record Clockwork Angels, and a workload which also included the launch of a live DVD plus a number of compilations and remixes last year.

But Ivar Hamilton of Universal Music Canada confirms the band are “very involved” in the Rush reissue – although the eight-track work featured co-founding drummer John Rutsey, with sticksman and lyricist Neil Peart yet to replace him.

Hamilton tells the Globe And Mail: “It’s very important; we want their blessing. It’s paramount that they participate in the project for the sake of authenticity.”

Rush was released on March 1, 1974, with a remix following four months later and a CD remaster launched in 1997. The tracklist includes Working Man, In The Mood and Finding My Way, all of which have remained fan favourites in the band’s canon.

It’s not yet known whether the anniversary edition will feature additional material.

Get Steve Rothery Band’s Live Album For Just 50p

steve rothery band

Steve Rothery is offering his solo band’s live album for just 50p until New Year’s Eve – hear their track White Pass below.

Live In Plovdiv was recorded at a guitar festival in the Bulgarian city in October, when Marillion man Rothery played with Dave Foster, Yatim Halimi and Leon Parr. The success of the show led to his decision to start work on his first-ever solo studio album, The Ghosts Of Pripyat, which has already secured twice the target amount via his Kickstarter campaign.

He recently told Prog: “Being invited to play at the Plovdiv festival left me with the problem of what to play for an hour – Blues In A just wasn’t going to cut it. I got together for a couple of writing sessions with Dave; and after a couple of days’ rehearsal with the fantastic rhythm section of Leon Parr and Yatim Halimi, I realised it was going to be something really special.”

The 9-track Steve Rothery Band collection normally costs £6 but the discount price of 50p can be activated by going to Rothery’s website and clicking the “Buy Now” link. When the purchase panel appears type “merryxmas” (without quotes) in the discount box, and the price box above will be modified, allowing you to enter £0.50 (or more if you want).

Progstars’ Choice: The Best New Thing I’ve Heard All Year

As the drapery falls on 2013, we asked a bunch of our favourite progstars: what was the best new thing you heard all year?

CHARLIE GRIFFITHS (HAKEN)
“Some might not consider my favourite progressive album of the 2013 to be prog at all, but Arc by Everything Everything, is amazing! They are playfully genre-bending in the same way Gentle Giant were, but with a totally modern sound. The songs are catchy as hell too!”

SEL BALAMIR (AMPLIFIER)
“Instructions: firstly, crossbreed ELO with The Beatles. Next, add in a pinch of psychedelia something like Jellyfish. Infuse the slacker-esque vibe of Beck – Presto: Lonerism by Tame Impala.”

ANNA PHOEBE
“My choice is quite random – a band called Guillaume Perret And The Electric Epic – self titled. This is their debut album. It’s so different from anything I’ve heard. It’s prog, jazz and metal. They just blow me away.”

JOHN YOUNG (LIFESIGNS)
“I’m going with Gordon Giltrap and Oliver Wakeman’s Ravens & Lullabies. It’s an album full of flair and imagination that obviously captured the hearts of people around the globe (proggy and non). A great collaboration from two most talented chaps.”

ANNIE HASLAM (RENAISSANCE)
“I love Speak by I And Thou. It’s beautiful and extremely melodic, powerful and dynamic prog rock music, with high calibre musicianship..”

MIKE PORTNOY
“Hands down my fave prog album of 2013 was Haken‘s The Mountain. It combined everything I love about progressive music: great musicianship, diverse styles, unforgettable melodies, epic songwriting.”

ANDY TILLISON (THE TANGENT)
“I’m torn between Magenta‘s 27 Club and Maschine‘s Rubidium. These two albums provide me with all the things I am familiar with, yet always love to hear done really well. They also take the true spirit of progressive rock’s intentions and develop it somewhere new.”

GEORGIA LEWIS (MASCHINE)
Steven Wilson’s The Raven… has a dark beauty, that’s expressive and yet complex. He paints with sound, creating atmospheric tension that flows with incredible musicianship.”

MATT BABER (SANGUINE HUM)
“For me, it’s Scott Walker’s Bish Bosch. It’s an album that’s progressive in the same way that Mt Everest is a bit of a tough climb. This is just off the scale inventive, visionary, gorgeous, disgusting and scary all rolled into one.”

DANNY CAVANAGH (ANATHEMA)
Amok by Atoms For Peace. Every five years or so, my musical landscape is completely altered, and I am reborn as a musician. My vision enhanced. This did this for me.”

MATT STEVENS
“My album of the year is Sanguine Hum’s Weight Of The World. An imaginative and exciting record, with real depth of arrangement and not afraid to take influences from outside the conventional prog genre.”

KIM SEVIOUR (TOUCHSTONE)
“My album of 2013 is Echo Street by Amplifier. It has the perfect balance of delicate vocal and instrumental harmonies and gut crunching wall of sound. Sel’s wonderful tone rides the flowing currents of the music beautifully. It’s emotionally provoking.”

OLIVER WAKEMAN
“I’ll plump for Lifesigns’ debut. It was great to hear an unashamedly progressive album full of real atmosphere and well crafted songs. John Young’s choice of keyboard sounds are great and some of them may well be worth ‘borrowing’ for my next record!”

DEZ NAGLE (THE SAFETY FIRE)
Karnivool‘s Asymmetrical is not only my favourite prog album of the year, but one of my all time favourites. A band for me who are prog in the truest sense of the word, and are consistently progressing.”

SONJA KRISTINA
Steven Wilson’s The Raven… is a masterpiece. I came across the video online and was entranced. Beautiful melodies and atmospheric arrangement and production. Haunting!”

MATT COHEN (THE REASONING)
“There have been so many amazing albums, but my number one album of 2013 is the new Dream Theater self-titled album. Melodic, rocking, flowing, catchy – a true return to form.”

JACK SHARP (WOLF PEOPLE)
“We’ve become massive fans of Koordinaten by Swiss two-piece Klaus Johann Grobe. It’s motorik krautrock but with far more humour, exuberance and skill than most of their peers. Such a great and exciting band, especially live.”

ALIA O’BRIEN (BLOOD CEREMONY)
“There’s no contest here: Purson’s crushing debut album The Circle And the Blue Door occupied my stereo for the larger portion of the year. With its meandering song forms, eerie mellotron hooks, virtuosic soloing, and generous doses of phase shifter, this album embodies an aesthetic that is both backward-looking and forward-leaning—Purson is truly its own psych-prog beast!”

JORDAN RUDESS DREAM THEATER KEYBOARDIST AND AWARD-WINNING APP BUILDER RELEASES SOLO PIANO ALBUM “ALL THAT IS NOW”

JORDAN RUDESS
DREAM THEATER KEYBOARDIST AND AWARD-WINNING APP BUILDER RELEASES
SOLO PIANO ALBUM
“ALL THAT IS NOW”

“JORDAN RUDESS EXPLORES”
THE INTERACTIVE AURAL AND VISUAL IOS APP RELEASED IN CONJUNCTION WITH ALBUM

 http://www.msopr.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Jordan-Rudess-Pledge.jpg

JORDAN RUDESS, best known as the keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire for platinum-selling Grammy-nominated prog rock band, DREAM THEATER, has released his latest solo piano recording, ALL THAT IS NOW. The album contains 13 pieces, composed and performed by JORDAN on his favorite instrument, a 9-foot Steinway concert grand piano. The album was created as part of a PledgeMusic crowdsourcing campaign in which almost 1,000 fans pledged between $10 to$5,000 in exchange for updates on his recording process and a battery of prizes ranging from private lessons to backstage passes. The PledgeMusic campaign also raised money for RUDESSupcoming orchestral album which will be released early in 2014.

Says RUDESS, “This album is very close to my heart. For years, I searched until I found the instrument of my dreams that would be the perfect extension of my musical thought, playing literally every piano I could find all over the world. I found my concert grand seven years ago and, ever since, my deepest musical connection occurs when I play my Steinway. It is my lifetime goal to purely translate the music in my mind, to my hands and then onto the keyboard. This album captures the magic of that connection. The recording was done simply in the piano room of my house using just my Steinway D and Earthworks microphones. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating it.

In addition to his solo piano CD, ALL THAT IS NOW, RUDESS has also released a WIZDOM MUSIC interactive iOS app, “JORDAN RUDESS EXPLORES,” which enables an interactive aural and visual experience with the music from the CD. JORDAN RUDESS EXPLORES was created by Jordan with developer Joe Zobkiw to explore the intersection between the traditional and electronic world we all live in.

In addition to playing in DREAM THEATER, RUDESS, voted "Best Keyboardist of All Time" by Music Radar Magazine, is the President of a successful music App development company WIZDOM MUSIC (www.wizdommusic.com), creators of award-winning apps such as MorphWiz, SampleWiz, and Geo Synthesizer Jordan has worked with a wide range of artists including LMR, his newest side project with Tony Levin and Marco Minneman, Liquid Tension Experiment, David Bowie, Steven Wilson, Aviv Geffen, the Dixie Dregs, Rod Morgenstein, Enrique Iglesias, Tony Williams, Jan Hammer and the Paul Winter ConsortDREAM THEATER’s newest self-titled album was released this fall on Roadrunner Records. The band will begin a whirlwind 14-month world tour in January, 2014. Their full-length concert DVD, Live at Luna Park, released last month went immediately to #1 on the Music DVD charts.
