The Pineapple Thief, The UK's Future Art Rock Stars, Reveal More Details on New Album Dissolution - Released August 31 on Kscope

Premiere of first single “Far Below”

The Pineapple Thief  have revealed their first single, entitled “Far Below” from forthcoming new studio album Dissolution. The highly anticipated follow up to 2015's Your Wilderness, is the band's second album to feature King Crimson and Porcupine Tree virtuoso drummer Gavin Harrison.

Vocalist, songwriter and guitarist Bruce Soord explains the song's evolution “'Far Below’ began life as a bit of a jam session between myself and Gavin. Gavin had this distinctive 6/8 rhythm going and it didn't take long for me to find the melodies. And so, a song was born. Is it my favourite track from the album? Impossible to judge as the album covers so much ground. But it does showcase what the four of us want The Pineapple Thief to be about and I for one can't wait to play this one live.”

“we just want you back from the life that claimed the life of you”

Bruce Soord reveals more about the themes within Dissolution“broadly speaking the title reflects the disintegration of relationships and the undoing of our social fabric. We're living in a time when supposedly we are more connected than ever before, but, I personally am at my happiest when I unplug that connection.”

Bruce Soord elaborates on the writing and recording process “We've once again been joined by Gavin Harrison. It's been a real collaborative journey between the 4 of us writing and recording this record, with the songs taking on a life of their own. When everyone pulls in the same direction, amazing things can happen. The Pineapple Thief is a different proposition with Gavin. This time he was with me from the inception of 'Dissolution' and together we took the songs into territory I wouldn't have found on my own. We found ourselves pushing each other so much further, both technically and artistically. There were times in the depths of the writing and recording process, which took 6 months, that I felt so exhilarated but at the same time exhausted and overwhelmed, that I couldn't imagine us ever finishing the record. Every day we found ourselves finding that extra something we didn't know we had. None of us would let anyone or anything get in the way of what we felt the album should become. I look back on the process with immense pride”

Gavin Harrison stated “It's been fantastic to collaborate with these guys again – especially as this time I've been involved from the ground up. It's been a most inspiring effort and I think it will prove to be the best yet.”

Dissolution was recorded across the UK at the band member's various studios, Bruce explains “The drums were recorded and mixed by Gavin at his studio, 'Bourne Place' in London. He has the best sounding live room I have heard and gets an incredible drum mix. Gavin would send me a stereo drum mix that he would constantly tweak as the songs progressed. Jon records his bass at his studio north of Leicester. Steve records his keyboards at his mastering studio in Exeter and I record and mix the rest here in my studio (Soord Studios) in Yeovil, Somerset. It may seem odd that we were able to create something as 'a band' when we are so far apart. But we talked almost daily. Technology means ideas can be shared instantly. We were effectively jamming a lot of the time. Just a bit further apart.”

Dissolution features cover art artwork from iconic design agency Stylorouge, who have produced artwork for the likes of Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Blur and the British film Trainspotting.

The Pineapple Thief have grown to become one of the leading lights of Europe's experimental rock domain, Your Wilderness produced 4m+ album streams, a #7 in the UK Independent Charts and two extensive headline European tours culminating at London's Islington Assembly Hall where the concert was recorded for the live release Where We Stood.

Norwegian Art-Rock Prog Ensemble Gazpacho to Release New Studio Album Soyuz

Norwegian Art-rock progressive outfit Gazpacho are set to release their brand-new studio album Soyuz through Kscope on 18th May 2018.

Known for their distinctive art rock that balances tense and beautiful arrangements, sinister and soulful melodic lines, Gazpacho's Soyuz furthers their experimental output. To launch Soyuz the band have revealed their first single “Soyuz One”. Watch the video here:

A band who are used to seizing headlines with bizarre stories, including The Independent (UK) branding Molok as “An album that could destroy the world”, Gazpacho have a holistic approach to the album writing process, imbuing each with a captivating concept. The themes of Soyuz were born from the idea of how beautiful moments pass and cannot be “saved for later”, so within Soyuz are interconnected tales of people and lives “frozen in time”. Taking inspiration from a multitude of eras and subject matters, including the doomed Russian space capsule Soyuz and its iconic captain Komarov; the Tibetan Buddhist funeral practice in “Sky Burial”; the inclusion of the oldest recording of the human voice from 1860 and the Hans Christian Andersen inspired “Emperor Bespoke”.

Recorded at Krypton Planet & St. Croix Fredrikstad in Norway, engineered by Thomas Andersen, Kristian Torp and Mikael Kroemer, mixed by John Rausch and mastered by Sonovo Mastering's Thor Legvold. The artwork, designed by painter Antonio Seijas, is inspired by Russian Cold War colours and fonts from the Soyuz One flight era.

Funktronic Icon DĀM-FUNK Remixes Track From New Todd Rundgren Album!

Los Angeles, CA - When legendary producer/songwriter Todd Rundgren went looking for special guests to collaborate with on his newest album White Knight (released 5/12/17 by Cleopatra Records) one of the more surprising yet enormously successful choices was electro R&B superstar DāM-FunK. The two collaborated on the stellar track “I Got Your Back,” fusing Rundgren’s jazz art rock with DāM’s ultra smooth e-piano grooves. Now, DāM returns to the track and offers up a new vision of their collaboration, a “Re-Freak” that adds more bottom heavy synths and new vocals sung by DāM. The result is a delight for fans of both Todd and DāM and is currently available on all digital platforms courtesy of Cleopatra Records.

About their collaboration, DāM had this to say, “Working with one of my heroes in music was a genuine pleasure. His progressive mind when it comes to all things music, without losing his soul in it, is such an inspiration to me and in what I humbly try to contribute to music listeners and aspire to. As the song says, ‘I got your back, Todd.’”

As a bonus, the digital single will come with a special “b-side” - the first downloadable release of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s remix of their Rundgren collab “Deaf Ears!”

Fresh off his latest run with Ringo Starr which ends tomorrow, November 16, Todd continues his “White Knight” headline tour beginning November 17 and ending New Year’s Eve at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills. For more info on the tour, visit: http://www.todd-rundgren.com/tr-tour.html

Track List:
1. I Got Your Back (Dam-Funk Re-Freak)
2. Deaf Ears (Nine Inch Nails Mix)

Art Rock Band Schooltree Descends into Crumbling Dreamworld with Multimedia Epic Heterotopia

Boston, MA - When music trends pander to the lowest common denominator, the real rebellion discards formulas and charts a stubbornly individualistic path. That's where we find Schooltree on their second release, Heterotopia: forging a new standard in sonic storytelling and taking us through cracks in the sidewalk into other worlds.

The story
Four years in the making, Heterotopia is a symphonic odyssey through a dystopian dreamworld: a 100-minute double record in the tradition of ambitious concept albums like The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and Quadrophenia.

Underachiever Suzi loses her body and must make her way through a parallel world of the collective unconscious to get it back. But the road she travels has been overtaken by shadows and chaos. In order to become whole again, Suzi must uncover the origins of this darkness, in a journey that takes her from the neon lights of her plasterboard horizon home to the bottom of a cursed river, where the fate of this place and her own are inextricably linked.

The recording
Produced by Peter Moore (Think Tree, Count Zero) and Lainey Schooltree, Heterotopia favors warmth and dynamics but also clarity and punch, effecting a sound that’s both classic and contemporary. Dramatic choices like distinct singing styles for each character’s voice and accompanying instrumentation guide the listener through a shifting topography layered with stacked guitar harmonies, crystalline synth leads, odd time grooves and ominous ambient soundscapes.

Heterotopia’s successful Kickstarter campaign raised more than $20,000, with signal boosts from notable artists Aimee Mann, Neko Case, Margaret Cho, Amanda Palmer and Barry Crimmins. (link: http://kck.st/1Rn2Je8 )

Brimming with ambition, this record is the sound of a group of musicians playing at their peak.

The illustrated book
In a nod to classic opera, Heterotopia’s complete libretto will be made available as a companion to the album, bringing the story and lyrics to life in a full color illustrated book. Combining influences from art nouveau and graphic novels, the artwork has a dreamlike quality that complements the music.

The live experience
Heterotopia will first be performed on March 31 at OBERON, the American Repertory Theater's stage in Cambridge, MA. The performance will take audiences inside a 3D interactive light sculpture video installation by Sam Okerstrom-Lang (Samo), a Boston-based new-media interdisciplinary digital artist and designer. Samo’s boundary-pushing work will use technology create an immersive sensory experience, blurring the line between nirvana and dystopia. From the moment each audience member enters the room, their experience will reflect Suzi’s, as the installation’s elements are activated in parallel with the performance. Key moments will be accentuated with sound and light, triggering an out-of-body sensation of navigating the worlds expressed in the music.

Lainey Schooltree
Lainey Schooltree is a Boston-based composer, performer and producer. A classically trained musician and vaudeville performer, humor and tragedy inform each other equally in her work. She explores the intersection of the new and old, always striving for the timeless in sound and theme. Her band, Schooltree, fuses literature and music to create something uniquely accessible, visceral and profound.

Lainey is the composer and librettist of Heterotopia, and will serve as performer, musical director and producer of the live experience.

Here's what the press have raved about Schooltree!

“Schooltree's music embodies the essence of Art Rock, with catchy melodies, sophisticated arrangements, lush instrumentation, and a wide array of influences that - besides classic prog - include opera, Broadway musicals and baroque pop. Lainey's dazzling vocals deliver lyrics that are humorous and thought-provoking at the same time. Highly recommended to fans of Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Supertramp, Queen and Roxy Music.” – Progarchives.com

“Schooltree (the woman) is a painstaking crafter of sound, if not an outright artisan of sound...” – Cambridge Day

“All in all, Lainey has her own stamp and an incredible sense of all aspects of music, from basic structure to finished master. Her arrangement skills are regal. Her composition smarts are sorely beautiful. Schooltree moves from art pop to symphonic rock, to haunting ballad to unforgettable music all over.” – Prognaut.com

“It takes a certain kind of courage to get onstage and make people laugh. It also takes courage to lead a rock band playing your own autobiographical, if cryptic, songs. For Lainey Schooltree, it has been a long trip transitioning from one to the other.” – The Phoenix

“Shockingly gorgeous… There’s an undeniable charm in Schooltree's music.” – Glorydaze Music

“Schooltree is a beautifully unique and experimental artist. Possessing a world of talent as vocalist, pianist, and composer, she is unafraid to let her creativity and imagination unfold and take her in whichever direction she feels like going.” – Bill Copeland News

“Lainey is the prog rock queen of modern times, with her Broadway musical vocals and theatrical cabaret presentation.” – Boston Survival Guide

“With a voice that garners comparisons with Goldfrapp, Tori Amos, Kate Bush and even Freddie Mercury, and a virtuoso command of the keyboard, singer Lainey Schooltree is a strong frontwoman who becomes two or three times actual size on stage. Believe it.”  – Boston Band Crush

10cc/Godley & Creme Legend Kevin Godley Releases New Book SPACECAKE on iBooks!

Ireland - SPACECAKE chronicles the misadventures of a debauched and dangerous masochist as he tantrums his way through the sleazy worlds of Rock & Roll, music video and technology, each squalid escapade dragging him ever deeper into a repugnant maelstrom of sordid excess...well sort of. A wee bit. Actually...not remotely.

It’s all about the work really.

If you don’t recognize the name, Kevin Godley was a founder member of ground breaking UK band 10cc. (Their single, “I'm Not In Love” continues to be one of the best selling records of all time). As one half of Godley & Creme he went on to pioneer the notion of music video as an art form and was responsible for iconic clips by artists such as Herbie Hancock, The Police, Duran Duran, Lou Reed & Frankie Goes to Hollywood etc, continuing to up his game in solo mode with U2, Frank Sinatra, Paul McCartney, The Beatles & Blur amongst others. KG thrives on re-inventing himself and SPACECAKE, his first book, takes you on an interactive tour of his life via pictures, music, film clips and 27 chapters of abstract insight into how everything from the first hits to WholeWorldBand, his music/video collaboration app, got made. It’s dark in some of the corners though...so make sure you bring a torch.

Kevin Michael Godley (born 7 October 1945, Prestwich, Lancashire, England) is a British musician, writer and music video director.

He was born in a family with Jewish ancestry, and went to North Cestrian Grammar School in Altrincham. His first band was Group 17 which had its origins in the Jewish Lads Brigade (The JLB). The members were Henri Shalam, Bernard Suffrin, Sydney Kaye and Jeffrey Baker, whose father may have inspired the “Sergeant Baker” character in the 10cc song, “Rubber Bullets”.

While attending art college in Manchester Godley met Lol Creme and formed several bands, most notably Hotlegs and 10cc. After leaving 10cc the two became known as Godley & Creme, both as musicians and music video / TV commercials directors. They won many MTV awards for their unique films and were jointly nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Music Video, Long Form for: The Police: Synchronicity Concert in 1986.

Godley writes, sings, and plays drums and percussion and in 1990 conceived and directed the TV music special “One World One Voice” that featured a global piece of music focussing on environmental and ecological issues. Godley also became a vegetarian during this period.

Both Godley and Lol Creme briefly “reunited” with their former 10cc bandmates Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman on the 1992 album, “Meanwhile”. However, Godley claims that their involvement with the project was very limited, as the album was dominated by studio musicians. He performed the lead vocal on “The Stars Didn't Show”, the band's tribute to the late Roy Orbison. It was the only song on the album not sung by Stewart. Following “Meanwhile”, Godley and Creme went their separate ways.

He reunited with another former 10cc member, Graham Gouldman, to record new music in 2006 as GG/06, and together they have recorded six new songs which are available via their website www.gg06.co.uk

Recently, Godley has moved into developing a music platform that combines audio and video to create a global recording studio in the cloud called “WholeWorldBand” (www.wholeworldband.com). The company was nominated for the “SXSW Music Accelerator Award” in 2013 and was one of eight finalists selected from a pool of over 500.

SPACECAKE, the book, is available for download from iBooks and can be read on any Mac iOS device.

Prog/Art Rock Review: Anathema-Distant Satellites

Release Date: June 10, 2014
Label: KScope

Starting out as a death/doom metal band back in 1990, Anathema has undergone a drastic evolution to the band that has just released Distant Satellites, album number 10. The debut album was released in 1993, entitled Serenades, and the previous studio album to this one was released in 2012, entitled Weather Systems. Between that release and the new album, I reviewed the live release, Universal, issued in 2013.

At the time of recording Distant Satellites, Anathema comprised 6 members, the Cavanagh brothers, Vincent (voice, guitar, vocoder), Danny (guitar, keyboards, voice) and Jamie (bass) together with the Douglas siblings, Lee (vocals) and John (drums) and Daniel Cardosa (keyboards, drums). Daniel Cardosa was a touring member of the band, but became a full member in 2012.

Distant Satellites is a 10 track album with a playing time nudging an hour in length (58 minutes). The longest offering on the album is the title track “Distant Satellites” with a running time of 8:36 minutes and “Firelight” is the shortest track at 2:49 minutes.

The opening track to Distant Satellites, “The Lost Song Part 1” (6:07), is the first of a three part track and enters with strings and keyboards before some frantic drumming ushers in the voice of Vincent Cavanagh. Vincent possesses a very powerful voice and it is ably backed up on this track by the crystal clear voice of Lee Douglas. The track powers along with insistent piano, drumming and layers of guitar adding the icing on the cake, so to speak. My problem with this opening track is that it doesn’t seem to go anywhere. The track builds in intensity, but there is no real shift in the music, it is the same from start to finish and I really wanted it to have some direction.

The second track, “The Lost Song Part 2” (6:01) has a gentle piano start before Lee Douglas takes center stage in a more angst ballad track. The band join in and the track moves along with some sections of building sound before the music drops away and gently makes an exit. This is a different style from the opener, but without that “je ne sais quoi” that pulls a listener into the music. “The Lost Song Part 3,” which is a few tracks further into the album, is more up-tempo and a return to Vincent on lead vocals. Drums and bass are the driving lynchpins of this track which again possesses an insistent piano theme. The guitar is a bit more prominent from time to time, but again I have that feeling that the track starts and ends, and when it does, any melody has just slipped out of my mind.

Named after the band, track 6, “Anathema” (6:56) is more of a slow burner before crescendo-ing into a superb violin, then guitar, passage. A good track without any doubt which leads into a track, “You’re Not Alone” (3:25), which I found a little out of place and seems to run the gamut of various styles in the short time it exists.

“Firelight” (2:49) is another track which seemed a bit “odd,” in that it seems to be nothing more than an instrumental bridge, utilizing church style organ, between the tracks “You’re Not Alone” and “Distant Satellites.” The title track (8:36) has a programmed drum feel about it with that superb voice from Vincent over the top and again I felt was one of the best tracks on offer.

The final track “Take Shelter” (6:18) has a more ethereal voiced Vincent over a subdued piano with some beautiful violin over the top. Some more programmed drumming, very similar to the last track, puts in a muted appearance but bursts into life as the song starts to increase in intensity, ultimately giving in to a full band workout. The last minute is a very poignant exit to a violin theme.

I struggled with this review of Distant Satellites as I genuinely do not dislike the album, it is just that at no point does the hand burst from the speakers, grab me by the throat and yell, “You will listen to this!” While the music on offer is played by skilled musicians, I felt that the spark required to ignite the album just wasn’t to be found.

Anathema followers will be eager to add Distant Satellites to their collections, but I am not convinced that this album will attract newer listeners to the band. As always, this is a very personal view, so give Distant Satellites a few listens to decide if you want to make a small space on your CD shelves.

3.5/5 Stars
