GANDALF'S FIST Announce New Line-up

Begin Working on New Album UK progressive rock wizards add two new members to their permanent line-up.

19th May 2014

Following on from the critical acclaim of last year’s “A Day in the Life of a Universal Wanderer” LP, UK's Progressive Rock wizards GANDALF'S FIST have added two new permanent faces to their line-up: Drummer Stefan Hepe and bassist Christopher Ewen. GANDALF'S FIST creative head and founding member Dean Marsh shares the following:

“GANDALF'S FIST are excited to announce the recent line-up change – We feel it’s important for any band to grow and develop and we’ve always seen expanding the scope of the band beyond mine and Luke’s creative vision as a key part of this.

We are pleased to announce that Stefan Hepe will be taking up the position as our new drummer whilst also joining on bass is our long-time supporter and drinking companion Chris Ewen. Both epitomize Gandalf’s Fist’s ambition and determination, as well as a common eccentricity which gives this band the potential to grow creatively. Their performance with us last year at Planet Rockstock only cemented our belief that we’d hit on a fruitful musical chemistry with these guys and filled us with tremendous excitement for where we can go as a fully-formed unit.

Thank you to all of our fans for your support thus far – we’re excited to now bring you a bigger, bolder Gandalf’s Fist experience this year! Prog out with your log out!”

Upon joining the band full-time, following a successful Live performance at last year’s Planet Rockstock, Bassist Chris Ewen remarked:

“Having sampled the various musical delights of Gandalf’s Fist from the early days, when they were just a musing in the mad mind of Dean Marsh, I knew that there was plenty of talent on show. It was an honour to be a part of Gandalf’s Fist first festival appearance. Now it’s a case of onwards and upwards, and a chance to be a part of the Gandalf’s Fist musical revolution. With Deano Marsh’s creative genius, Luke’s cryptic lyrics, Stefan’s thunderous drums and now my booming bass lines, the world should be prepared for a good Fisting!”

The original two-piece collaboration now hangs its collective hat far further than the shores of Maryport, Cumbria, with German drummer Sefan Hepe adding:

“I got in direct contact with the band last April - I was a fan, and I owned every release so far! I look at it as an opportunity to play great music and experience something new. If I wasn't going to be The Fist’s Drummer, somebody else would have played. Somebody else, who might not as much love the music as much as I do!”

As a four-piece, GANDALF'S FIST are currently writing and recording new material for their, as yet, untitled fifth full-length release due for release later in the year. With a number of high-profile guest musicians already jumping on board the project, 2014 surely is the year of the Fist.

Opeth Release Pushed Back

08/05/2014 ~ by Martin Kielty

Source Link: http://www.progmagazine.com/news/2014-05-08/opeth-release-pushed-back

11th album Pale Communion will appear in August
Opeth have confirmed rumours that the release of their 11th studio album, Pale Communion, has been delayed.

It will now appear on August 25 via Roadrunner Records after Mikael Akerfeldt and co ran into scheduling difficulties that made the planned June deadline impossible to meet.

He says in a statement: "Many of you have heard the rumours already. We can now confirm the release of Pale Communion has indeed been pushed back."

"Several circumstances prevented the band from delivering essential tools to Roadrunner in time, which are needed to set up the release properly. Release schedule conflicts made us decide on August instead of June."

He recently explained his decision to record using digital technology instead of his preferred analogue equipment, saying: "We didn’t have time. When we have recorded onto tape, even if we’ve been well-rehearsed, we spend a month or six weeks, which I didn’t want to do this time. I wanted it to be fast, spontaneous and fun.”

Lead single Cusp Of Eternity will be launched on June 3 ahead of Opeth's appearance at this year's Download festival. A second track is scheduled for release in July.

13 Streaming Music Services Compared by Price, Quality, Catalog Size and More

Beats Music, Google Play, iTunes, Pandora, Rdio, Spotify and others: See which one's best for you.

Forget for a moment how profitable streaming music services are (not terribly), or how much they’re paying in royalties to rights holders (or in particular, how much is ultimately trickling down to the artists). Those things couldn’t be more important when you get down to it, but they’re also intangible figures we’re left to speculate about, since full disclosure of a revenue network as complex and legally tortuous as the music industry’s is inconceivable. Soulfly, Dillinger, Mastodon, Mars Volta Supergroup Details Debut Album, Front Cover Unveiled

Killer Be Killed, a supergroup consisting of Soulfly's Max Cavalera, Dillinger Escape Plan singer Greg Puciato, Mastodon's Troy Sanders and former Mars Volta drummer Dave Elitch have officially announced full details of their upcoming self-titled debut.

Featuring 11 new tunes, the album is scheduled for May 13 release via Nuclear Blast Entertainment. The record was produced by Josh Wilbur, known for his work with Gojira, Lamb of God, Avenged Sevenfold and more.

Discussing the band's sound, Puciato explained: "There would be no point in doing this if it sounded the same as our other bands. Of any of our bands, it sounds the furthest away from mine, mainly because Dillinger is Ben [Weinman]'s expression, musically."

"This is a very special project," said Max Cavalera. "It's a one of a kind thing, with a lot of potential. The album is a mix of heavy, fast and melodic songs. I love the idea of Greg, Troy and I singing together, with David Elitch's amazing drumming. Being a part of this is something quite different for me."

Finally, Sanders chipped in, "Having met, created and recorded an album together, this experience has easily exceeded my initial expectations. The collective energy and mutual respect for one another eased the entire process and has been very therapeutic for me."

Check out the track listing and album cover below.

"Killer Be Killed" track listing:

01. Wings of Feather and Wax

02. Face Down

03. Melting of My Marrow

Led Zeppelin Announce Box Set Editions of First Three Albums

By Dave Lifton March 13, 2014 11:06 AM

After teasing us this morning with the cover art, Led Zeppelin have announced the complete details of the remastered and expanded versions of their first three albums.

Each album will be released in a variety of formats — including “Super Deluxe” boxed editions — on June 3. In the future, Led Zeppelin’s other six albums will get similar treatment in chronological order.

All three albums will be released on CD, digital download and 180-gram vinyl, the latter of which will replicate the original packaging perfectly (including ‘Led Zeppelin III”s original wheel and die-cut holes). The Deluxe Edition — also available in all three formats — contains a set of bonus tracks. ‘Led Zeppelin’ contains a concert from the Olympia in Paris on Oct. 10, 1969, while ‘II’ and ‘III’ have alternate takes and mixes, instrumental backing tracks and previously unreleased songs. See below for the breakdown of the tracks on the extra discs.
“The material on the companion discs presents a portal to the time of the recording of Led Zeppelin,” Jimmy Page said. “It is a selection of work in progress with rough mixes, backing tracks, alternate versions, and new material recorded at the time.”

In addition, there will be a Super Deluxe Boxed Set for each album that contains the Deluxe Edition on both CD and vinyl, with a card for high-definition digital download. Also included in the Super Deluxe Boxed Set is a hardcover 70+-page book about the album and a high-quality print of the original album cover, with the first 30,000 individually numbered. The set for ‘Led Zeppelin’ features a replica of the press kit from that album.

You can pre-order all formats except digital from their website. The prices are as follows:

Samsung’s Milk Music, a free radio streaming service, now available for download

By

In terms of music and radio streaming services, we are practically spoiled. From Spotify to Rdio to the recently-released Beats Music, there is no shortage of options out there. Still, Samsung decided it was time to enter the growing music streaming market by announcing Milk Music.

Questionable naming aside, Milk Music brings a library of 13 million tracks to the table, though the collection belongs to Slacker Radio. You can either go through 200 pre-made stations or just make your own, all of which is free of charge and, for a limited time, free of ads.

There are some limitations, however, one of which is the inability to purchase a song for offline listening. Samsung will allegedly consider such an option for a future update, however. In the meantime, you can choose to cache music in order to listen to music offline. The flow of music is unlimited, as well, though you can’t skip more than six times per hour.

Most annoying, perhaps, is the limited initial audience Milk Music has. At the time of this writing, you can only use the service on the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Mega, Galaxy S4 Mini, and the upcoming Galaxy S5. In addition, only owners of those devices in the United States can download the service. According to Samsung, it will consider bringing Milk Music to other markets and handsets, but for now, that’s the deal.

It is currently available for download from Google Play.

Gear Reviews: Splawn 4x12 Cabinet

Picture

Just the other day, I came across an awesome trade offer - my Vox AC4C1, a Dunlop Crybaby 535Q, and $40 for a Splawn cabinet! I've been hunting one of these down forever, but the prices have been a bit too much for me, so I couldn't turn this offer down. There are a few scuffs here and there, the 'Marshall' logo is a bit sideways (it came with the Splawn logo too, I just haven't put it on yet), but it's got some serious mojo.

First of all, this cab is built like a tank. It weighs considerably more than my Marshall cabinet, and is about 2" wider on the sides. This makes it extremely difficult and awkward for one person to transport, especially if you're moving up and down stairs. Bring a friend! There is also a locking 1/4" jack on the 16 ohm input, which is a neat feature I have never seen before. The handles on the side are metal, which feels a lot sturdier than the typical plastic that most cabs come equipped with. It's a pretty looking cabinet, but Splawn obviously built this for the road.

My cab came installed with Celestion Vintage 30's and G12T-75's in an x-pattern. The combo sounds great together, giving off quite a modern vibe compared to my G12C loaded Marshall cab. There are less mids, more bass, and an overall darker sound. I'm a self-professed Greenback fanatic, but the V30/G12T-75 combo is not too shabby. To truly test the speakers, I went straight to Drop-D and played some of my favorite Dream Theater riffs. All I can say is, wow! There was some extra "oomph" in bass that surely upset the neighbors, and the cab projected wonderfully no matter how I was oriented toward the speakers.

Splawn has never ceased to impress me, and their cabinets are no exception. These are road warriors (that is, if you can get past the trouble it takes to transport), but would sit just as comfortably in a home studio. Pretty much any head will look great with them, because there are a ton of customization options on the website. And last but not least, they sound awesome. Big, beefy tone that will make your bandmates jealous. For the price, features, and sound, these Splawn cabinets deserve far more attention than they are getting.

tonechaser score - 9.5/10

Why You Should Accept Adam Lambert as Queen’s New Frontman

By Matt Dolloff

If you’re a Queen fanatic, you have mixed feelings today. You’re elated to hear that the band are returning for a new tour, but also heartbroken at the thought of replacing the incomparable Freddie Mercury with Adam Lambert.

The fact is, no one can replace Mercury. In terms of talent, energy and showmanship, he’s as unparalleled as they come for a rock frontman. And Lambert knows this.

The former American Idol runner-up’s flamboyance and singing style clearly draw deep inspiration from Mercury, and he’s acknowledging that as Queen’s frontman on the tour, he’s essentially along for the ride.

“I’m honored to be able to pay my respects to Freddie’s memory; he’s a personal hero of mine, and I am deeply grateful for the chance to sing such powerful music for fans of this legendary band.”
This isn’t about improving upon, replacing or even approaching what Freddie Mercury brought to the table, even though Brian May has said Lambert would get Mercury’s seal of approval. This tour is meant to honor the legacy and influence of one of rock and roll’s greatest artists in the best way possible: by performing his songs.

When Lambert takes the stage, he doesn’t need to channel Mercury, or imitate him in any way. He just needs to be himself and sing the songs straight up. He’s already proven able to do that. And if Queen’s prior performances with Lambert are any indication, there will be virtual duets with a video of Mercury anyway, if you’d prefer something like a hologram to a live singer.

If you end up seeing Queen & Adam Lambert live this year, go to enjoy the songs and celebrate Mercury’s legacy along with everyone else. Concerning yourself with comparisons between Lambert and Mercury are frankly a waste of time.

Spotify Should Get Access To Music Later Than iTunes, Says Apple

By

Apple has been pushing for a windowed release strategy for new music, according to a Billboard report. In talks with record label executives, Apple has pointed to the latest Beyonce album as a possible blueprint for future releases: iTunes offered Beyonce’s self-titled album as an exclusive for one week when it was released in December. After that, it also sold at other retailers, but Spotify and other streaming services only got two tracks. Apple executives think that such windows could boost digital downloads, which declined by 57. percent last year.
