Jazz Review: Pablo Embon-The World Within

Pablo Embon is a remarkably talented artist. He has released his 15th album titled The World Within. The album was performed, recorded, mixed and produced by Embon between June 2015 and February 2016 in Israel. Amongst the 13 tracks there is a multitude of jazz stylings.

As a listener this is sheer delight to hear such talent and diversity on display. As an individual with the role of reviewing said music it is quite an undertaking. I mean that as the sincerest form of flattery by the way.

The influences Pablo has are many and 99% of them are artists I love so it is no wonder I found it easy to fall into this music like it was an old friend. Jazz is very complex music, a true art form that deserves respect and the full attention of a listener. Lord knows if you have a lapse in your listening you are bound to miss something prolific or even a subtle nuance that changes the entire direction of a song.

It is hard to choose a place to start with this magnificent recording but as usual I like to focus on 3 or 4 tracks that stood out for my ears and musical palette. First let me say how much I have always loved jazz and although I hear elements of it in much of the music I have the opportunity to review, I rarely have the chance to take in so many different forms of the genre in one sitting as I have with The World Within.

“Peeling Off” caught my attention first with the title itself. This was like peeling off the layers of something to find something underneath, then doing it again and again. For instance the peeling of the musical onion can be a wonderful thing for a musician to experience and even more so for the music fan to hear it. This track was all about the grandeur and elegance of the piano. Embon certainly pays due respect to the ivory keys with the wonderfully rhythmic and pleasant journey.

“The Real Thing” for me was the expression of jazz from beginning to end. It reminded me so much how I came to love this music in the first place. The all-important percussion, the gentle tapping of the symbols, the guitar accentuating the tinkling of the piano as the bass and drums fall into sync. This is traditional jazz that changes over to a more modern sound nearly half way through. It was like listening to Dave Brubeck morphing into Chick Corea (worthy of note are the electric keyboards). I loved the back and forth transitions, and how in one track a listener gets to experience how jazz music has progressed into what it is today. Not only is it “The Real Thing,” it is a tribute to the art.

“What I've Heard” is one of the more interesting tracks and the one that steps away from the others. One cannot help but notice how different it sounds even though the entire album offered a good helping of different jazz styles throughout. This track while having a foundation of jazz to work with, takes everything one step further with the steady and proud pounding of military drums that echo the past and usher in the future once the keyboards come rolling in. The orchestral maneuvers bring a cinematic theme to your mind’s eye easily, like the very beginning or end of a favorite movie soundtrack. It made me think of John Wayne riding a horse across a vast expanse in the Wild West. All the changing emotions and atmospheres are packaged ever so tidily in this track.

You are bound to find The World Within the music after one listen. I listened three times and kept finding more. Welcome to the incredibly entertaining world of Mr. Pablo Embon!

Dark Pop Duo Corlyx Release Magetic EP ‘One Of Us’

Dark Pop sensation Corlyx are set to release their EP ‘One Of Us’. After kicking off their musical career with the enticing and compelling first single from the EP, ‘Starlet’, the duo is now ready to share a full set of songs that take on influences from electro, goth and industrial rock.

Having been inspired by artists ranging from Bjork to Portishead and The Progidy, Italian DJ and songwriter Brandon Ashley and former nurse Caitlin Stokes have formed their musical collaboration after falling in love in LA which led Caitlin to cash out her retirement fund so the two could move to Italy and start a new life of music, glamour and creativity.

One of their songs on the EP, ‘Narcissistic Girls’, captures their decision of leaving LA just like their first release ‘Starlet’ by drawing on the superficiality and vanity that often accompanies the insatiable strive for fame that many young girls in LA succumb to and also , as the band explains, the “narrative of narcissism in our social media driven society”.

After living the life of an authentic rock star whilst with his previous band Brandon Ashley & The Silver Bugs, Brandon is no stranger to the excess and madness that goes hand in hand with rising fame. He had already had a history of overindulging in recreational substances after grieving over the loss of his dad when he was 18.In Caitlin the musician and DJ has found someone to confide in since both band members have had a long story of traumatic experiences involving family dramas, illness and drug abuse while growing up.

Caitlin’s childhood and youth was particularly burdened since she used to suffer from severe deformities in her spine, an illness called Marfan Syndrome. As such she grew up feeling alienated due to her looks. When she underwent a life threatening surgery for her condition she found herself in a completely different body and the pain she had to endure made her depressions worse than before. Their next single release ‘Nobody’s Happy’ touches upon this exact experience. Corlyx explain: “The song and music video to it are about how childhood trauma inhibits our ability to be content in our adult lives, warping us emotionally and sexually. “ The video premiere for ‘Narcissistic Girls’ is set for 27th February 2016.

Having come a long way from personal and mental distress both Caitlin and Brandon have a natural distaste for the LA lifestyle that is mostly centred around fame and celebrity craze: “The EP puts a spotlight on our past in Hollywood Land and takes an overall stance against the artificial and the superficial.”

While Corlyx show distaste for artefacts with no substance and originality, they have created their own world of glamour and fashion in which authenticity and self respect precede the blind chase for plastic fame which often requires artists to lose their dignity. Instead, Corlyx combines a talent for dark and mysterious sonic elation with a sense of fashion, art and glamour that touches upon the realms of bizarreness and otherworldliness.

The EP ‘One Of Us’ and the second single release ‘Nobody’s Happy’ will be out 13thFebruary 2016.

Raving Wild Concept EP ‘Kolmanskop’

“Raving Wild has all the seriousness of good indie folk music but is very pop-alt relevant!”
-Jamsphere-

Raving Wild is set to release contemplative indie EP ‘Kolmanskop’, a cathartic project that deals with life lessons learned from past mistakes.

Having appeared on Tom Robinson’s BBC 6 show and BBC Introducing Three Counties amongst others, Raving Wild is one of the most intriguing and riveting singer songwriters on the indie scene at the moment. Signed to Coffee Jingle Records, the musician has earned praises from media platforms such as The National Student declaring that Raving Wild aka. Graham Iddon is “crafting a sound that is delicate yet powerful, embedding subtle instrumental intricacies within hook-heavy ballads.”  Other people who complimented his music include Liz Mitchell of Boney M.

With a touch of Jeff Buckley and City and Colour, the EP and eponymous single ‘Kolmanskop’ is an ode to an abandoned mining town in the Namib desert which Raving Wild used as a symbol for the EP’s concept “Lessons learned in the desert”, an inspiration that derived from a soul searching mission in which the artist wanted to understand how he could learn from past mistakes and understand the world around him better. The lead single, ‘At The Crossroads’, sets the perfect mood for the life journey that the singer describes in the record.

Check out ‘At The Crossroads’ here:

Having lived in a miner’s town himself during his early childhood years (albeit not in the desert but in the North East of England), Raving Wild has managed to mix concept with personal experience. To make the recording process as authentic and ‘desert-like’ as possible, the singer dehydrated himself 24 hours prior to the making of ‘Kolmanskop’. He also explains: “This is, to my knowledge, the only track in the world where a pickaxe makes part of the percussion.”

Raving Wild has recently had the opportunity of playing at the film set of the latest Star Wars movie at the prestigious Pinewood Studios in London as well as in front of a couple of thousand people at Parklife Festival in Aylesbury last year.
Apart from being a talented songwriter and lyricist, Raving Wild’s interests range from attempting to break the record in the land speed of an office chair or eating a tin of hot dogs in the fastest time possible. He’s managed eight in 16 seconds which means he did not break the record.

We might not read about Raving Wild in the Guinness Book of Records, but it is more than likely that he will gain growing attention for his music in the world’s entertainment sections.

The EP Kolmanskop is out on 28th March 2016
