The Musical Box is undertaking the reproduction of the original concert in painstaking detail to give people an illusion of being at the actual Genesis show. The visual reconstruction of the show was based on photos and slides of the original concerts, as well as articles from papers and magazines and information offered by numerous people who either worked on or attended the original Foxtrot tour. Couple that with the outstanding artistry and musicianship associated with The Musical Box and the audience is flawlessly transported back in time.

Zappa Plays Zappa

Fri, 04/10/2015 - 8:00pm

"One Size Fits All" 40th Anniversary Tour

Growing up in the Zappa family home, Dweezil Zappa marveled at his father's virtuoso skills as a composer and guitarist. After his father's passing he was inspired to do something to honor his father. Feeling as though there was a generational gap and a fair amount of public confusion as to what his father's music really was, Dweezil set about creating an opportunity for music fans to make a new discovery. Not satisfied with the generic journalistic descriptions that had been applied over the years or the accidental default association of "novelty act" he earned by way of the casual radio exposure of songs like "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow" and "Valley Girl," Dweezil Zappa decided it was time for a change. He wanted to expose core fans as well as a potential new generation of fans to his father's compositions in a way that would give them a balanced perspective of the totality of Frank Zappa's work. If Zappa Plays Zappa was to become a conduit for a new generation of people discovering Frank Zappa's music then Dweezil wanted to do his best so that very little could be lost in translation.

FLYING COLORS TO RELEASE SECOND NATURE VIA MUSIC THEORIES / MASCOT LABEL GROUP

Morse, Portnoy, LaRue, McPherson and Morse Announce Tour To Commence October 2 in Los Angeles with Shows Planned For Chicago, Philadelphia, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, The U.K. and France

GuitarWorld.com Premieres Album Teaser: http://www.guitarworld.com/flying-colors-return

Rotterdam, Netherlands --- Mascot Label Group and Flying Colors have announced a September 29 release date in Europe and the U.K. for the band's SECOND NATURE album via the Music Theories label.  The critics were united in acknowledging the eponymously titled debut album from Flying Colors among the most fascinating releases of 2012. Teaming the talents of such heavyweight names as Deep Purple/Dixie Dregs/ex-Kansas guitarist Steve Morse, drummer Mike Portnoy (Transatlantic, Winery Dogs, ex-Dream Theater), Neal Morse (Transatlantic, Spock’s Beard and a prolific solo artist), bass player Dave LaRue (Dixie Dregs, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and more) with a comparatively new talent, pop singer/songwriter Casey McPherson, the band challenged conventional wisdom about combining virtuoso music and melodic songwriting.  GuitarWorld.com has premiered an album teaser featuring all five band members here: http://www.guitarworld.com/flying-colors-return

The UK’s Classic Rock magazine hailed the band’s debut as “fearless”, praising its “Journey-sized choruses” and referencing artists as diverse as The Beatles, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Doors, Muse and even Frank Sinatra.  In late 2012, the band toured the United States and Europe, dazzling fans with Flying Colors originals and selections from the catalogues of the five members. The chemistry can be heard on ‘Live In Europe’, a Number #1-charting Blu-ray, DVD, CD and vinyl package recorded and shot in Tilburg, Holland.

Schedules allowing, the protagonists had always viewed Flying Colors as a genuine band as opposed to a mere side project, and quietly yet purposefully they began writing a second studio album. From the first writing session to final delivery of the masters in July 2014, the process took almost a year and half, albeit in four distinct stages: writing sessions via Skype in January/February 2013, another burst of writing and recording at Neal Morse’s house in Nashville, a trip to Portnoy’s home that spawned five additional songs, and finally individual recording/arrangement over the internet throughout the spring of 2014.  “The first album was very much a blind date,” Mike Portnoy explains. “Although we already had ‘Team Dregs’ of Steve/Dave and ‘Team Transatlantic’ of myself/Neal, it was the first time that the five of us – seven if you include Bill Evans and Peter Collins – had collaborated together as a group. This time there was an existing chemistry, we had not only the prior experiences of making the debut album but also the 2012 tour as well.”

Sporting stunning artwork from the legendary designer Hugh Syme (Rush, Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Whitesnake) and bookended by two tracks of truly epic stature – ‘Open Up Your Eyes’ and the multiple-part ‘Cosmic Symphony’ – the album is every bit as breathtaking as the debut.  Portnoy stresses that the music’s proggier path was “not conscious at all.” The drummer continues: “Direction was never even discussed. We just did what we do. I think perhaps not having a producer to ‘trim the fat’ possibly led to the songs breathing and expanding a bit more.”  Perhaps Steve Morse sums things up best with the statement: “This is an album full of many layers. The more you listen, the more you can hear. It’s an album to keep listening to.”  The complete track listing is: "Open Up Your Eyes," "Mask Machine," "Bombs Away," "The Fury Of My Love," "A Place In Your World," "Lost Without You," "One Love Forever," "Peaceful Harbor," "Cosmic Symphony - I. Still Life Of The World; II. Searching For The Air; III. Pound For Pound"

Flying Colors will tour from October 2-14, across the United States, Europe and the UK.  Appearances are confirmed in:

JETHRO TULL: A PASSION PLAY (EXTENDED PERFORMANCE) 2CD/2DVD Set, Vinyl, & Digital Download Available July 1

In 1972 Jethro Tull were riding high on the crest of a popularity wave, they sold out huge arenas on the back of their critically acclaimed fifth album Thick As A Brick. The question was:  “How do you follow a concept album comprising a single 44-minute piece of music?” The answer was: “With a double album of separate songs of course.”

For the first time in their five year career, Tull went into the studio with an unchanged line-up. Founder member and undisputed leader Ian Anderson was still writing songs on flute, acoustic guitar and now saxophone, and he was again joined by guitarist Martin Barre, bassist Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond, drummer Barriemore Barlow and keyboard player John Evans. But which studio to use?

The first criterion was that it had to be abroad. The second criterion was that the studio of choice had to have a good reputation.  The 18th century Château d'Hérouville near Paris had previously been used by Elton John to record Honky Château and by Pink Floyd for Obscured By Clouds. It contained living accommodation as well as studio facilities, and so seemed the ideal choice. What could possibly go wrong?

The choice was a disaster. First up, there were technical problems with the studio itself. Then there was the accommodation... the band all slept in a dormitory, it was very basic which might have been tolerable, had they been the sole occupants of the rooms. Unfortunately, they had unwelcome company, of a bed-bug variety. And then to make matters infinitely worse everybody got food poisoning from the in-house catering.

Unsurprisingly the band decided to go home and the decision was made to ditch the hour or so's worth of music recorded in France. They decided to start from scratch and write a whole new album, instead of trying to somehow regenerate everybody's interest and commitment to something that had already struggled.

And so to A PASSION PLAY, an album that evolved into a 45-minute piece of quasi-prog rock, with complex time-signatures, complex lyrics and, well, complex everything, really. With a mere nine days left in the studio before the next tour, the pressure was on to produce something quickly. The concept explored the notion that choices might still be faced in the afterlife. It recognizes that age-old conflict between good and bad, God and the Devil.

This beautifully packaged 2CD/2DVD case-bound book expanded edition of A PASSION PLAY includes the original album and earlier Château d'Hérouville Sessions both of which have been mixed to 5.1 surround sound and new stereo mixes by Steven Wilson.

A heavyweight 180-gram vinyl edition featuring the new stereo mix of the original album is also available.

Prog News: Thine Release New Album The Dead City Blueprint

Band statement:

“We’ve been toiling away for over a decade on shaping our latest monster. It has been such a long & grueling process with countless collapses & relapses & a traumatic voyage on numerous levels, but this opus is finally in the flesh so to speak. It is an encapsulation of all those glorious tragedies we all find ourselves overcoming along the way, & essentially for us, a welcome catalyst. Sometimes the best art comes only through being unexpectedly forced through the city’s darkest avenues, so hope you’ll find us there”.

Opeth Release Pushed Back

08/05/2014 ~ by Martin Kielty

Source Link: http://www.progmagazine.com/news/2014-05-08/opeth-release-pushed-back

11th album Pale Communion will appear in August
Opeth have confirmed rumours that the release of their 11th studio album, Pale Communion, has been delayed.

It will now appear on August 25 via Roadrunner Records after Mikael Akerfeldt and co ran into scheduling difficulties that made the planned June deadline impossible to meet.

He says in a statement: "Many of you have heard the rumours already. We can now confirm the release of Pale Communion has indeed been pushed back."

"Several circumstances prevented the band from delivering essential tools to Roadrunner in time, which are needed to set up the release properly. Release schedule conflicts made us decide on August instead of June."

He recently explained his decision to record using digital technology instead of his preferred analogue equipment, saying: "We didn’t have time. When we have recorded onto tape, even if we’ve been well-rehearsed, we spend a month or six weeks, which I didn’t want to do this time. I wanted it to be fast, spontaneous and fun.”

Lead single Cusp Of Eternity will be launched on June 3 ahead of Opeth's appearance at this year's Download festival. A second track is scheduled for release in July.

Queensryche Settle With Tate

Fired singer loses rights to name but gains exclusive chance to perform Operation Mindcrime albums live.

Well-wishers: Tate and his ex-bandmates

The two Queensryche factions have finally reached a legal settlement over ownership of the band name following the sacking of Geoff Tate in 2012.

Relationships had broken down between the singer and bandmates Eddie Jackson, Scott Rockenfield and Michael Wilton, leading to a violent confrontation which saw Tate’s dismissal, and his replacement by Todd La Torre.

The argument went to court, with both parties given the entitlement to use the Queensryche title until a later ruling, or a settlement was reached.

That’s happened just ahead of a return to the courtroom. Jackson, Rockenfield and Wilton will continue under the band name while Tate will be compensated for his share of ownership, and leaves with the rights to perform an Operation Mindcrime live show, based on the band’s 1988 concept album and its 2006 second volume.

In a join statement the parties say: “An amicable settlement has been reached. According to the agreement, original members Eddie Jackson, Scott Rockenfield and Michael Wilton along with recent members Todd La Torre and Parker Lundgren, will noes be the sole entity recording and touring as Queensryche, performing selections from their entire musical catalogue that spans over 30 years of material.

“Original Queensryche lead singer Geoff Tate will continue to record, perform and pursue a variety of other creative endeavours. As part of the agreement he will have the exclusive rights to perform Operation Mindcrime I and II in their entirety as a unique performance.

“Both sides wish each other well and are excited about what the future holds. We want to thank the fans for standing beside us though this ordeal, and look forward to sharing our music with you for years to come.”

Tate’s version of Queensryche launched an album called Frequency Unknown in April last year, while the other original members’ lineup launched a self-titled record two months later.

at 01:00pm March 28 2014

Anathema - Distant Satellites

Anathema have confirmed their 10th album is called Distant Satellites, and it’s set for release on June 9 via Kscope.

They describe the follow-up to 2012′s Weather Systems as “the culmination of everything we have been working on in our musical path,” and add: “It contains almost every conceivable element of the heartbeat of Anathema music that it is possible to have.

“There is beauty, intensity, drama, quietude, and extra musical dimensions that we have previously only hinted at. It is all built on the song writing chemistry of Daniel, John and Vincent Cavanagh – and the haunting voice of Lee Douglas.”

Steven Wilson mixed some of the tracks, while the others were prepared by Christer-Andre Cederbeg, who also worked on Weather Systems.

The band have also confirmed a short run of UK concerts, starting with an appearance at the Celebr8.3 prog festival at the Islington Assembly Hall in London on May 31. They’ll appear there alongside Frost*, The Tangent, Twelfth Night, Karmakanic, Galahad and others. Anathema also play this year’s Download festival.

Anathema acoustic dates

May 31: Celebr8.3
Jun 06: Leamington Spa Assembly
Jun 15: Gloucester Cathedral

Prog Rock Magazine Exclusive: Ian Anderson Explains New Album

Ian Anderson: Homo Erraticus
Prog is proud to present an exclusive interview clip in which Ian Anderson discusses his new album Homo Erraticus – view it below.

It’s taken from an in-depth discussion with Prog editor Jerry Ewing to mark the title’s release on April 14 via Anderson’s imprint Calliandra Records and Kscope. The full interview will be included on the special edition of the album.

Homo Erraticus is the third album to feature Gerald Bostock, who first appeared in 1972′s Jethro Tull release Thick As A Brick, then returned in Anderson’s Thick As A Brick 2 in 2012.

In the clip below he explains how the “political hot potato” of migration inspired Homo Erraticus, observing: “As Gerald Bostock says, ‘We’re all from somewhere else – get over it.’”
Anderson kicks off an extensive UK tour on April 28. His solo band will deliver the album in full along with a selection of Jethro Tull classics, updated with video and theatrics. Tickets are on sale now, see jethrotull.com.
