Prog Rock Review: Jethro Tull - Still Living In The Past (5 CD/BR/BOOK)

Release Date:  July 11, 2025

Label: Chrysalis

Website

Steven Wilson’s remasters of the Jethro Tull catalog have reinvigorated the sound of the music and brought further attention to their entire catalog.

Still Living In The Past is a comprehensive package that includes five CDs, featuring Steven Wilson remixes in 24/96 PCM stereo and DTS 5.1 surround, a flat transfer of the original album, and bonus unreleased original mixes. These unreleased mixes, which offer a fresh perspective on the band's classic tracks, are a treasure trove for Jethro Tull fans. It is also available in a 2 LP set.

Additionally, it includes the Live at Carnegie Hall 2025 remix in 24/96 PCM and DTS 5.1 surround, as well as four promotional films. It is all presented in a book format, containing a wealth of information about the band’s recording sessions and live shows. For those interested in the lyrics, they are included.

The mixes on CD1 and CD2 are clean and vibrant, showcasing the exceptional performances by the band members. Martin Barre’s guitar, consistently brilliant during his years with the band, also shines on CDs 4 and 5, offering a faithful representation of his talents. Having seen Jethro Tull perform live several times during his time there, I can attest that he was the perfect fit for Ian’s songs.

Other highlights are some superb flute playing from Ian, and his voice was powerful. The entire band was a well-oiled machine consistently. John Evans had some moments of his own on the keyboards, notably on CD4 “With You There To Help Me / By Kind Permission Of.” The opener on that CD, “Nothing Is Easy,” was terrific as well. The bottom end was spot on, per usual, and Barre just took off in the live setting.

Throughout the live tracks, you will hear many moments when the band had more room to stretch out and improvise, adding an element of excitement and spontaneity. At the height of their success, they were a great live band, capable of cutting loose on extended jams and delivering impressive improvisations.

Classic JT, such as “Teacher,” “Living In The Past,” ‘The Witch’s Promise, " and “Bourée,” are always a treat. Then “Dharma For One (Live)” explodes with instrumentation; it's one of the best cuts. And “My God,” where Ian informs the audience on the intro, “for those who use God to lean on, it is not my cup of tea.” People familiar with the band and Ian's beliefs, both religious and political, understand him and can set those aside to enjoy the music. I always have myself. I realize he's an intellectual, and his lyrics can be profound and cerebral, but that's what makes the music so much better; it prompts you to reflect and think more deeply. You can think of it as music and beyond, making for a unique combination that has entertained millions of music lovers worldwide.

Still Living In The Past is an extraordinary addition to the remasters series and a must-have for those who want to hear rare demos and live material from the band at its peak, when it was becoming world-renowned.

Progressive Rock Review: Jethro Tull-Curious Ruminant

Release Date:  March 7, 2025

Label: Inside Out

Website

Ian Anderson's creativity, a timeless force that has not waned after all these years, continues to shine. His primary vehicle for presenting his creations, Jethro Tull, is still making viable progressive rock, and that legacy is upheld in the most recent recording, Curious Ruminant.

As most fans have become intimately familiar with Ian 2.0 and his voice, the music's strength carries him into the future. He sings/talks his way through his storytelling, a familiar and comforting journey that works just fine as far as I am concerned.

The subject matter presented here can be deep and reflective for a man nearing 80. He hints in the liner notes that he is still here and plans to continue, but you never know what tomorrow may bring. So, as a long-time fan, I appreciate what he continues to do more with each passing year.

Curious Ruminant is an excellent addition to the Jethro Tull catalog. The one song that amazed me was the nearly seventeen-minute "Drink From The Same Well."  It was on the level of some lengthier prog rock classics, such as Thick As A Brick. It was not nearly as long, just reminiscent of that musical muscle stretching out like the earlier version of the band, and what it was known for.

"Puppet And The Puppet Master" kicks off the journey with a soft beginning, then into a flute intro. His playing of that instrument remains captivating. The pace gradually increases with fluidity, yet is restrained and quite effective. A splendid solo from the electric guitar is a highlight, albeit short, as the other positions also get their chance to announce their arrival to the mix.

"Curious Ruminant" begins with an excellent bass and guitar. The music is fantastic and rocks, with some holding back on exuberance and intensity. Acoustic interludes find their way into the mix, and the electric guitar lines weave into the tapestry of multi-hued sounds. A melodic flute coursing through brings pleasantries as more electric guitar fills the space.

"Dunsinane Hill" features a mellowed-out flute piece casually inviting you in. Intricate guitar notes float over that beautiful instrument as the bass and drums precisely keep the path clear for Ian's skillful approach to every composition. Some catchy rhythms and lovely flute passages keep your interest.

"The Tipu House" immediately starts with a faster tempo with the flute. A tempered guitar lends elegance as the bottom end holds on strong and true. Keyboard flurries are catchy here and firmly in place, giving it all a prog-like feel. A "shut the door" ending finishes out the track.

"Savannah Of Paddington Green" immediately brings the acoustic guitar to the front, accompanied by Ian's lyrics. The tempo increases with a colorful amount of music, changes direction, and returns to where it started. The lyrics reach you through the perfected instrumentation and Ian's subdued delivery. It's important to note how understandable Ian is, which is key in interpretation, where he is coming from, or always implying, to make you feel and reflect more.

"Stygian Hand" rang out in a celebratory atmosphere as if the court jesters had entered to entertain the royal family. It felt like an old English setting in the days of castles, moats, and drawbridges. Some rhythmic guitars, acoustically driven, take hold with superbly magical flute playing. Andrew Gidding does a fantastic job on the keys, as he always does. A well-placed electric guitar, albeit just a taste, closes out this side of the platter.

Side B is where things get more interesting, intense, and colorful from start to finish. The first side set the tone, and now they take it all to the next level.

"Over Jerusalem" begins the second half of this musical journey with acoustic strings accompanied by the flute, a perfect marriage. Soft backing music prevails as Ian sings. The halfway point brings some great electric guitar kicking in, with the flute blended in nicely. This is very JT-like as the electric guitar lets loose for the first time for some exciting licks. The mix is extraordinary as the flute and acoustic guitar answer each other. The best of both worlds comes at you, bringing a wonderfully energetic opener.

As I mentioned, "Drink From The Same Well" is impressive. A beautiful flute and an acoustic piano introduce this multiverse of music. The changes in direction during the track's run are significant. The flute takes a more aggressive stance with consummate elegance and precision, and as the changes develop, you recognize the instrumental bliss of it all. Sudden stops provide more turns in the road as the flute is dancing its way into your heart. This is an instrumental work of art. The bass then becomes prominent. As if to say, "I want to let you know it is still a key component in driving this musical ship."

A lovely piano interlude adds an extra layer of ambiance. Then, there is a short pause as Ian begins to speak and offer the words of importance: "I drink from the same well as you." This is a prolific humanitarian message to us all. The energy shifts yet again to a more upbeat tempo as the flute sounds inflected with jazz for a short period, which was an entirely different twist. After that, it returns to the more colorful notes we enjoy. The track turns into an excellent mover with varying tempos and tones. The progressive rock holds you spellbound as there is another pause, then Ian goes into the closing out of the recording, reciting "Interim Sleep."

Curious Ruminant features all the facets of a Jethro Tull album you would expect, including acoustic and electric guitar moments and embellishments of many other instruments for color and texture.

This is everything one could ask for at this point in the band's career, including moments of progressive rock that you will remember fondly. That is very satisfying as a music lover and a lifelong band fan.

Prog Rock Review: Jethro Tull-Live Bursting Out (The Inflated Version-3CD/3DVD) Format: 3CD/3DVD

Format: 3CD/3DVD

Release Date: • April 11, 2024

Label: Chrysalis

Website

Keeping with the ongoing flow of remasters of the Jethro Tull catalog by Steven Wilson, a most excellent live 1978 release, Live Bursting Out (The Inflated Version), is available in the usual book format that all the other releases have arrived in. Hopefully, the vinyl version will follow shortly, as it is a superb live recording. Inflated is an accurate description. It is all packaged in a hardcover book with trays for 3 CDs and 3 DVDs. And if you have a 5.1 surround sound system, you are in for many extras. Also, there is an extensive overview of the recording in 96 pages of text and pictures. It is quite the package that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Here is the breakdown of each disc:

•CD 1: Jethro Tull live: Bursting Out (Part 1) - A Steven Wilson stereo remix. Soundcheck recordings - A Steven Wilson stereo remix. Tracks 7, 10, 11 (full version) & 12-16 previously unreleased

•CD 2: Jethro Tull live: Bursting Out (Part 2) - A Steven Wilson stereo remix

Soundcheck recordings - A Steven Wilson stereo remix. Tracks 11-13 previously unreleased

•CD 3: contains an edited version of the 1978 Madison Square Garden Show, which

was issued in 2009 but is now mixed by Steven Wilson.

•DVDs 1 & 2 have the remixed tracks in 96/24 stereo and 5.1 surround plus the flat transfers of the original album at 96/24 stereo.

•DVD 3 has the full 93-minute MSG show, including 50+ minutes of video, which was part of a transatlantic broadcast with the BBC and Radio 1. The audio is 48/24 stereo and 5.1 surround.

I usually do a track-by-track account in my review of one of my favorite artists to cover; however, the read would be too exhaustive. I can offer prospective buyers and fans who have not pursued this set a more condensed version with what I feel are the most relevant points.

Of course, Ian is the group's focal point, being the frontman, writer, multi-musician, and all-around animated entertainer. So, it was no surprise that the cameras showed close-ups of Ian with sweat glistening on his forehead and face during the Madison Square Garden broadcast video. Those were excellent shots of him performing at his best during the band's peak decade. The shots that pulled away from the stage were foggy and looked dated. Also, the entire show was not on the video; it was missing parts in the front and back of the show. When there is no video, you get a rotation of pictures of the band, which is subpar as well. I am sure they did the best they could with what they had, and the bottom line is that the sound is excellent.

I appreciated the remix Steven Wilson masterfully created, as usual. I found it interesting to see what Ian said about that process. He mentioned he did not want to know what was going on. In his case, I can understand from an artist's standpoint how important your recorded work is, and the fact that Ian is such a professional and perfectionist would cause the man a bad case of nerves to watch Steven at work.

I appreciated Jethro Tull's talent and how they could recreate all of their studio works on the stage with a unique flair and precision. Some of my favorites were "Thick As A Brick," "Aqualung," "Songs From The Wood," "Heavy Horses," "Minstrel In The Gallery," "Skating Away (On the Thin Ice of the New Day)," which, as some of your older fans may remember, was on the flip side of the "Bungle in The Jungle" 45. Warchild was my first JT album in the 70s and remains my favorite. I am sure many fans would not agree that it was their best album, but I loved it. Minstrel in the Gallery is the album that followed it, and it impressed me as a musically intense prog rocker. This convinced me to continue to explore their catalog of releases.

If you are a classic prog rock fan, from what most folks say is the most fertile decade of the genre, you need to hear one of the best of that period at the height of their success. There is a valid reason why all these repackaged releases still sell: they are undoubtedly some of the best rock music ever recorded and performed on the stage. You'll agree once you hear this recording again or for the first time. It's on Amazon now for $49.59, a bargain for what you will get in return.

Hey, but someone has to try oddball things, don’t they? Might as well be me...” - Ian Anderson

Ian Anderson’s solo albums explore different sonic landscapes and instrumental line-ups, each record in this boxset standing as a testament to his versatility. From the electronic experimentation in Walk Into Light and the profound narratives of Homo Erraticus, to the acoustic serenity of The Secret Language of Birds, these albums are a reflection of Anderson's unending creativity and his ability to seamlessly blend diverse musical styles into cohesive, captivating works.

A word from Ian Anderson on 8314 Boxed:
"Since 1983, I have made a few solo albums, not as dissatisfaction with fellow musicians or the group identity but usually just to try something a bit different, whether sonically, stylistically or in terms of instrumental line-up. These records all stand out for me as being quite different from each other and in some ways demonstrate a broader depth of my songwriting. The flute instrumental Divinities record is one of my favourites to this day.”
