Glass Hammer Unveil Ode To Echo

at 03:13pm January 20 2014
Glass Hammer: Ode To Echo

Glass Hammer are preparing to release their 14th studio album Ode To Echo – and leading light Steve Babb has told Prog the material focuses on “some very dark ideas.” View a teaser trailer below.

Jon Davison, who also fronts Yes, has laid down vocal tracks alongside returned live singer Carl Groves and former member Susie Bogdanowicz. Guest musician include Rob Reed of Magenta, David Ragsdale of Kansas and Randy Jackson of Zebra.

And the album marks Glass Hammer’s first-ever collaboration with an outside lyricist in the track Crowbone, penned by British historical fiction novelist Robert Low.

Babb tells Prog: “We turned a corner last year when Carl rejoined to fill in for Jon, who was touring with what we call ‘the other band.’ We knew it wasn’t a good thing to have Carl only front us on stage, but we’d always said how much we would love to have him in the studio, as well as Susie – so, back she came as well In our minds, they’d never really left.

“Jon hasn’t quit just because he’s working with Yes, so Ode To Echo features all three of these singers, and even a couple of others from years gone by.

“Lyrically we’re dealing with mythology, using it to call attention to some very dark ideas. Narcissus is seen on the cover; fans can expect to hear our thoughts on narcissism. Ozymandias, I Am I and the oddly-titled Misantrog are three tracks that deal with narcissism specifically.”

Babb became a fan of Low’s books after reading his Oathsworn series, which deals with a group of Vikings as they battle their way across Europe in the tenth century. He explains: “Rob’s work is very gritty and down to earth, but he doesn’t shy away from the supernatural; and he does an outstanding job of putting you into the action. You can smell the fear, the sweat and blood of battle.

“With Rob I did something I very rarely do: I emailed him as a fan. To my surprise he replied and confessed to being a Glass Hammer fan. He sent me a poem he’d written for his novel Crowbone that he hadn’t used. He recently heard a rough mix of the track, and seems genuinely thrilled with the direction it has taken.”

And the experience has been a positive one for Babb: “Rob and other authors are absolutely welcome to send me verses or poems. There’s a very good chance we would do this again. Hawkwind had Michael Moorcock – Glass Hammer could have Rob Low. But anyone who has a spare bit of poetry lying around that wouldn’t mind having it ‘progged up’ should send me something soon!”

A firm release date hasn’t been set for Ode To Echo, but it’s due in the coming weeks. Babb reports: “Expect an album that sounds nothing like the last three or four, and yet sounds precisely like Glass Hammer. That seems like a contradiction, but will make much more sense to fans once they’ve heard the album.”

The Crimson ProjeKCt Australian Tour 2014 Rescheduled

The Crimson ProjeKCt Australian Tour 2014 Rescheduled

Written by Al Newstead on 7 January 2014

The Crimson ProjeKCt Australian Tour 2014 has been rescheduled just two days before it was set to kick off in Melbourne this Thursday.

Announced late last year and sending fans of prog rock legends King Crimson into fits of joy, the arrival of The Crimson ProjeKCt this month has been postponed with the band announcing new dates for this June 2014.

A press statement issued this afternoon offers no explanation for the change in dates, but all tickets purchased for the original January dates and venues are still valid for the rescheduled dates.
The Crimson ProjeKCt is an offshoot featuring three current members of that historic Robert Fripp-led band – Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, and Pat Mastelotto – joined by three talented musicians; the classically trained Fripp acolyte Markus Reuter plus Power Trio members Julie Slick and Tobias Ralph to play the music of King Crimson in a three showcase.

The concerts will commence with sets by Stickmen and the Adrian Belew Power Trio before culminating in a performance of King Crimson material by The Crimson ProjeKCt featuring all six musicians.

Belew, Levin, and Mastelotto have a large influence on popular culture due in part to their critically acclaimed work with some of the world’s most influential artists, such as Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, David Sylvian, Talking Heads, Paul Simon, John Lennon, and Nine Inch Nails.
These concerts represent the first opportunity ever for Australian and New Zealand audiences to witness the sheer majestic force of King Crimson music performed by those instrumental in its creation.
“It’s a helluva show! Nearly 3 hours long: Stick Men play a set of their music (which includes a Krimson track or two), then the Power Trio plays a set of my music (which also includes a Krimson track), then Tony and Pat and I play a Krimson song (as yet another trio),” explains Adrian Belew.
“Then comes the big finale: both trios play more than an hours-worth of Krimson music as a double trio!”

In June, Wisdom of Crowds, the debut album from the partnership of Bruce Soord with Jonas Renkse was released. Bruce is best known as the frontman of The Pineapple Thief, while Jonas is lead vocalist with Katatonia.
The album was named as one of The Guardian's albums of the year who described it as 'a mesmerising and melancholy exercise in wonderfully subtle song craft’. Rocksound stated it was, 'steeped in pedigree, immersive and gracefully executed’, Metal Hammer said it was 'the sound of two supremely talented artists snatching magic from the ether’ (9/10) while Kerrang! declared it ‘a bit of a corker'.

2013 has been an incredible year for Steven Wilson. In February he released The Raven That Refused To Sing (And Other Stories), his third solo album. The album was a huge critical and commercial success, earning numerous 5 star reviews and charting well across the world, debuting at #3 in the German national chart, #28 in the UK top 40, #57 in the US Billboard top 200, #16 in Holland and #17 in Finland. The album has since been named album of the year at the Progressive awards and #1 in the Prog magazine critic's choice poll.
Steven assembled a virtuoso band to record the album and subsequently embarked on a successful world tour. The band, currently made-up of Guthrie Govan (guitar), Adam Holzman (keyboards), Theo Travis (flute / sax), Nick Beggs (bass / stick), and Chad Wackerman (drums). Chad, who was Frank Zappa's longest serving drummer, has replaced Marco Minnemann, who played on the album and on the previous tour.

Early pioneers of Norwegian black metal, Ulver have continually evolved throughout their career and now inhabit a place entirely their own, blending rock, pop, electronica, symphonic and classical traditions along with progressive and/or avant-garde forms to create ground-breaking material.
The diversity of the band and the projects that they undertake was evident in their two releases on Kscope during 2013.
In April a CD +DVD set was released which captured the band's landmark gig at The Norwegian Opera House. The 2 hour concert married tracks from throughout the band's catalogue to stunning visuals to create a spectacle fitting for such a grand venue. The evening was captured on 6 HD cameras and the audio has been mixed for this release in the band's own Crystal Canyon Studios.

This was followed later in the year with Messe I.X–VI.X, a new studio album. Messe I.X–VI.X was commissioned last year by the Tromsø Kulturhus (House of Culture) in Norway, in a cooperation with the Arctic Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra cultural institution. It was composed and first performed live by Ulver, alongside the Tromsø Chamber Orchestra on September 21 2012. The band then took the recordings back to Oslo and spent winter and spring in post-production, honing the material for its studio-equivalent.

North Atlantic Oscillation are currently working on their third album which will be released on Kscope in 2014. Before they started this process Sam Healy, NAO's frontman and songwriter, released Sand, the self titled debut album from his new solo project.
Sand allowed Healy to experiment with ideas and themes which he didn't feel would work on a NAO album and it was described by The Big Issue as 'a bright, bold kaleidoscopic album that makes the Super Furry Animals sound as pedestrian as The Libertines' (FOUR STARS)

Dark Age, the follow-up to 2008’s The Flax of Reverie, was rated as one of the top 50 albums of 2012 by The Quietus, who described it as, 'a startling, frank examination of the human (and perhaps especially male) condition delivered via synth bombast and towering choruses'. The NME stated; 'listening to 'Dark Age' can feel like sensory immersion... the album transcends genre, yet takes elements from the dark shadows of industrial rock and the glitch of electronica...it's a beguiling affair', while Wire noted that 'O'Sullivan is steadily carving a niche for himself as a highly accomplished avant-pop polymath.'

The Pineapple Thief are currently in the studio recording their new album set for release in spring 2014. Despite the lack of a new album this year it has still been a pretty hectic year for Bruce Soord and co.
The band have been on numerous tours, released a new EP as well as continuing the process of remixing and re-mastering various albums from their catalogue. New editions of What We Have Sown and One Three Seven were released early this year and these were followed by a deluxe edition of Tightly Unwound, the first album to be released on Kscope.

Mike Portnoy Bored With Drum Solos

Mike Portnoy admits he’s become bored with playing drum solos – and he’d rather use the time to play another song for fans.

He believes he’s grown out of taking over the show himself, and says he only performs solos because of pressure from others.

mike portnoyPortnoy tells MusicRadar: “I get that not only from the fans but from a lot of my bandmates. The guys go, ‘Oh man, you’ve got to do a solo,’ and it’s like, ‘I don’t know – I’d rather do a song in that five minutes.

“I’m not interested in drum solos any more. This is my personal taste as a listener and a player: I think I’ve grown out of it.”It’s not the first time he’s fallen out of love with that part of a show. “I stopped doing solos in the mid-2000s just because I felt like it was redundant,” he reflects – but adds: “Maybe that will change. Most musicians go through changes and phases, so that’s just where I’m at in this particular moment.”

Portnoy’s Progressive Nation At Sea cruise takes place next month, featuring his bands Transatlantic and Portnoy Sheenan MacAlpine Sherinian plus Jon Anderson, Adrian Belew, Devin Townsend, Spock’s Beard, The Flower Kings and others.

Progressive Music Awards 2013: Vote For Your Album Of The Year Choice Now!

Are These Albums On Your List For Prog Album of the Year?

Since Prog magazine’s inception back in 2009 we have, year in year out, marvelled at the quality of the music that’s been made. And this years has proved no exception with a raft of jaw-droppingly enjoyable releases that parade under the broad reach of the prog mantle. It makes whittling it down to a list of ten nominees all the more harder. So think long and hard abut who you might vote for in the Album Of The Year category.

Here are the nominees…

Amplifier – Echo Street

They signed to a new label and returned to their Manchester home ground for inspiration. The sublime Echo Street sees Amplifier maturing like the finest of wines.

Steve Hackett – Genesis Revisited II

In casting his eye back over the rich heritage of progressive music that he created with the rest of Genesis, Steve Hackett added a vibrant new twist to some classic sounds.

Steven Wilson – The Raven That Refused To Sing (And Other Stories)

Wilson’s peerless, fearless approach to creating new progressive sounds that evoke fond memories of the past whilst breaking new ground continues unabashed.

Tame Impala – Lonerism

Flying the flag for Antipodean weirdness, the Aussie alchemists captured imaginations when Lonerism’s heady meld of electronica, Beatle-esque pop and sun-scorched evocation scored chart success worldwide. Prog’s psych-heads were also enraptured; it went Top 10 in our 2012 critics’ poll.

Spock’s Beard – Brief Nocturnes And Dreamless Sleep

The band’s first studio album with new singer Ted Leonard and drummer Jimmy Keegan saw Spock’s Beard creating some quite stunning and classic progressive sounds.

TesseracT – Altered State

Another new singer in the vibrant Ashe O’Hara sees the Milton Keynes-based quintet crafting their most thought-provoking and inspiring music yet.

The Enid – Invicta

Since their reappearance on the progressive scene with 2010′s Journey’s End, the pioneers of symphonic prog have been a band reborn. The scintillating sounds of Invicta continue to set them apart.

Big Big Train – The English Electric Pt II

This Winchester sextet’s quest for sonic perfection has gained even more momentum with their recent two-part set The English Electric. This year’s second installment is possibly their finest work yet.

Marillion – Sounds That Can’t Be Made

Their first album in four years reaffirmed the belief that these standard bearers for progressive music continue to seek to ever push forward musical boundaries with an at time fearless abandonment.

Nightwish Lash Back Over Olzon Claims

Nightwish with Anette Olzon
Happier times: Nightwish with Anette Olzon

Nightwish have released a statement lashing back at former singer Anette Olzon, who last week told Prog the band had fired her in 2012 instead of splitting by “mutual understanding,” as had been announced at the time.

Olzon said she believed she was dismissed because she was pregnant with her third child and added she’d been treated the same way previous frontwoman Tarja Turunen had been.

Now the band have addressed specific comments she made in Finnish magazine Me Naiset, describing her claims as “misrepresentation and defamation.”

Nightwish say via their website (in Finnish): “This ‘one woman against Neanderthals’ is an easy to way to take advantage of our history. Anette’s departure was not due to pregnancy or illness – we found she was a misfit in our working community.”

In response to Olzon’s suggestion she was fired almost immediately after telling mainman Tuomas Holopainen she was pregnant, the band state: “Anette told the band of her pregnancy a week earlier. Everyone congratulated her. Anette herself offered the opportunity to hire a replacement vocalist. Later she reversed her decision, and the difficulties really began.”

Referring to her comment that more money went to the male members of the band than to her, they report: “Anette has been paid a fifth of everything. We have no reason to lie, because this cake has provided enough slices for us all. The band’s financial affairs have always been managed openly, honestly and fairly. The books exist.”

Olzon also said: “Mentally heavy was the fact that the boys decided everything for me. I did not have any say – if Tuomas came up with, ‘Let’s go to Africa now,’ we went.”

Nightwish reply: “Neither Tuomas nor any other of the boys of the band can single-handedly decide where we take off to and when. Managers and promoters discuss possible gigs, records and other publications, and all band members’ wishes are taken into account. All these details have been negotiated with Anette and her manager – the emails are in a safe place.”

They add: “In order to enjoy touring it is only right and proper to do things at a comfortable level. Anette and her family got their own tour bus in Europe and America. The expenses were paid by the organisation, not Anette or her company. Others of the band didn’t get the same advantages.
“We neither want to nor intend to comment on this more now.”

In the magazine interview Olzon said she felt abandoned after falling ill on tour days before she was replaced by Floor Jansen, saying: “None of the band came to hospital to see me. I suggested we cancel gigs until I was well but the boys refused to negotiate on the issue. I was still recuperating when Floor was flown in to replace me.

“There were tangles in my private life while we were on tour, but I didn’t want to tell the band. I think the guys saw I was breaking down – but they didn’t offer much support. I wondered what I had done wrong to deserve this. I was also, of course, worried that I wouldn’t be able to support my family.”

But the vocalist – who’s poised to release her solo album Shine – added that she still hoped to talk things out with Holopainen, reflecting: “I’ve often thought about calling Tuomas; I don’t think this has closed yet. Only now can I say I’m happy; the bad experiences have had a purpose.”
