The 4D MAN is a mysterious recording artist delivered to us via the surf multiverse. Who is this person or band? I have to say, the cover art for IL Fantasmi dello Spazio is compelling; it looks like a forbidden-planet-type scenario. And the fact that they are anonymous makes it even more interesting. These four tracks are an introduction to their exciting sound.
“IL Fantasmi dello Spazio” begins with a soft bassline; then, within a few seconds, everything erupts. The guitar has a twangy, metallic sound followed by some heavier fretwork. All the instruments merge for a complete sound. There is some spoken word woven in—like when a voice comes onand says, “an extraterrestrial microbe.” That gives it a sci-fi, interstellar feel.
“The Earth Dies Screaming” maintains the same energy as at the start. The hard-driving bass and drums are the engine that moves this musical machine. There is a lot of energy packed into a little over two minutes. The guitars are excellent; they speak loudly and proudly.
“Radiocarbon Dating” features more spoken word than the previous tracks. There is never a dull moment to be had in this music. The guitars continue to rock out, and the bottom end secures the necessary space without giving up an inch, allowing those six strings to stand out nicely and consistently.
“Univac 9000” starts quite differently from the other tracks, and the guitars waste no time joining the fray. Cool resonating effects are implemented here alongside brief spoken words. The drums remain in the background, tapping out a singular rhythm as melting synth sounds enter and eventually fade out. It’s electronics that meet modern rock with a unique twist.
If you are a fan of Man or Astro-man? You are going to love the 4D MAN and their recording, IL Fantasmi dello Spazio. This is a great taste of what may be in store for future releases. I enjoyed it; it was a departure from anything I have heard in some time. For my ears, that is a welcome opportunity. It’s time to blast off into the void with some rockin’ tunes!
