Hard Rock Review: Monster Truck-Furiosity

Artist: Monster Truck
Title: Furiosity
Genre: Hard Rock
Release Date: May 8, 2013
Label: Dine Alone Records

It’s not often I think about monster trucks these days, but when I do my mind goes straight to the TV and radio ads for the car-crushing and fire-spitting beasts that they have at car shows. These ads remind me of many things, but no matter what they may be it’s hard for it all not to be soundtracked by some killer rock! This Monster Truck certainly won’t change this relationship in my mind.

I was expecting more of a southern rock style from Monster Truck, but Furiosity certainly seems an apt title for this quartet from Hamilton, Ontario. Their debut full-length starts with “Old Train” Some chirping birds soon give way to the sound of an approaching train, and then the sound hits you much like a train; furious indeed. It’s heavy, dirty, and full of angst-filled energy.

Monster Truck’s style shows appreciation for 70s rock greats like Zeppelin and Deep Purple, but it tends to have a more modern and crunchier sound. It often reminds me of bands like Corrosion of Conformity and Clutch. You get a southern rock vibe on many tracks, such as “Undercover Love,” some blues on “For the Sun,” and some prog on “The Giant,” but over Furiosity’s 12-tracks it does get a bit repetitious at times. On their own I enjoyed most tracks, but non-stop from start to finish it is a bit of a challenge.

Overall I’d say Furiosity is a strong album from Monster Truck. I am excited by what Monster Truck brings and where they can go with it. I found myself cranking the volume often, and nodding my head along. Monster Truck definitely rocks, and they do so in a way that doesn’t come off as dated or trendy. They come off as a band that likes to rock, knows how, and will continue to do so in a way that will appease rock fans that continue to search for such bands.

4/5 Stars
