Gentle Giant is happy to announce the release of the first 4 albums on vinyl April 3rd.

After the positive response to the box set “Unburied Treasure” many fans asked whether the vinyl albums would ever be available. The band has responded and decided to make these albums officially available for the first time in decades.

The band’s first album “Gentle Giant” was first released in October 1970. Produced by Tony Visconti it marks the 50th Anniversary of the recording and live appearances of the band. Tony Visconti produced the follow up album “Acquiring The Taste” in 1971.

The band oversaw the production of the third album “Three Friends” in 1972 and was the first official release in North America. Strangely the N.A. version featured the artwork from the U.K. “Gentle Giant” album.

This album was followed up with their milestone album “Octopus” in 1972. Once again the North American artwork was different to the Roger Dean U.K. version and featured a dye cut Octopus in a jar.

Released on the Alucard label, the albums will be manufactured in 180 gram vinyl with the original gatefold artwork from the U.K.

The band hopes that their friends, followers and fans will enjoy these albums in their original form 50 years later!

Esoteric Recordings is pleased to announce the release of a newly re-mastered and expanded 3CD clamshell box edition of the classic album, “A Song for All Seasons” by RENAISSANCE. Released in March 1978, the album featured the song “Northern Lights”, a Top Ten hit single in the UK and Europe, and was a successful hit album in the UK, USA and Canada. By the late 1970s the line-up of highly gifted vocalist Annie Haslam, Michael Dunford (acoustic and electric guitars), John Tout (keyboards, vocals), Jon Camp (bass, acoustic & electric guitars, vocals) and Terry Sullivan (drums, percussion) had recorded a series of acclaimed albums that fused classical music influences with progressive rock and had earned a loyal following in Europe and had enjoyed wider success in the United States and Japan.

Working with producer David Hentschel (who had also produced the albums “A Trick of the Tail” and “Wind and Wuthering” for Genesis), the material on “A Song for All Seasons” was some of the most carefully crafted work of the band's career. This expanded edition has been newly re-mastered from the original master tapes and features 15 bonus tracks, including the previously unreleased promotional edit and a “Top of the Pops” recording of “Northern Lights”, along with a BBC Radio session from August 1978 and a further two CDs comprising the entire concert recorded at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia on 4th December 1978, appearing in full on CD for the first time, with an additional 55 minute's worth of unreleased tracks.

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a newly re- mastered and expanded edition of the classic 1973 album by Renaissance, “Ashes Are Burning”. Formed in 1969 by former Yardbirds members Jim McCarty and Keith Relf, by the 1971 Renaissance had undergone a series of line-up changes and had evolved into a completely different band from the one that had recorded the albums “Renaissance” and “Illusion”. By June 1972 Renaissance had signed to EMI’s Sovereign label and had settled into a line-up featuring the highly gifted vocalist Annie Haslam, John Tout (keyboards, vocals), Jon Camp (bass, vocals), Terry Sullivan (drums, percussion) and Rob Hendry (guitar, mandolin, vocals) who recorded the album “Prologue”, featuring material written by Michael Dunford (a member of the group who had decided to eschew performing with the band to concentrate on song writing) and lyricist Betty Thatcher.

Featuring such classic material as “Can You Understand”, “Carpet Of The Sun”, “At The Harbour” and the epic title track (featuring Andy Powell of Wishbone Ash on electric guitar). Released in October 1973, “Ashes Are Burning” would establish Renaissance as one of the finest symphonic progressive rock acts.

This Esoteric Recordings edition has been re-mastered from the original Sovereign Records master tapes and adds a previously unreleased thirty minute live performance for BBC Radio One's In Concert programme in 1974 (recently discovered in the archives).

Formed in 1969 by former Yardbirds members Jim McCarty and Keith Relf, Renaissance had by 1971 undergone a series of line-up changes and had evolved into a completely different band from the one that had recorded the albums “Renaissance” and “Illusion”.

RENAISSANCE PERFORMING TWO EXCLUSIVE CONCERTS IN TOKYO 17th & 18th SEPTEMBER 2018

Symphonic Rock Recordings is delighted to announce the release of a new 2 CD and DVD live album by Renaissance, “A Symphonic Journey”. This wonderful recording captures in sound and vision a very special concert staged at the Keswick Theatre in Glenside PA, USA on 27th October 2017. Renaissance perform an extensive set of classic material with the Renaissance Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble especially formed for a series of American concerts.

Annie Haslam comments: “Renaissance has touched so many hearts across land and sea, for what seems to be most of a lifetime now, in the performance of this exquisite and unique music. I cannot imagine my life apart from being the 'voice' of Renaissance, to carry our message out into the world. For a long time now it has been a dream of mine for Renaissance to perform 'live' again with an orchestra, but the how and when of this was unclear. I felt however, deep inside that it would one day come to pass.

“I was filled with pride and overwhelmed with emotion when we finally stepped onto the stage for this performance. To look over my shoulder and see all of the classical musicians with their instruments, brought back my vivid memory of our orchestral performance forty years ago in London, of Renaissance at The Royal Albert Hall with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

“Renaissance band members Rave Tesar, Mark Lambert, Leo Traversa, Geoffrey Langley and Charles Descarfino are impeccable on this DVD in their performance of the timeless music. In the culmination of a perfect blend with the Renaissance Chamber Orchestra who graced our stage, how wonderful it was and is to be able to share this incredible, unforgettable evening with our loyal supportive fans who have accompanied us on this musical-spiritual journey”.

“A Symphonic Journey” captures on two CDs and a DVD (NTSC / Region Free) the magic of the concert and features such classic material as “Trip To The Fair”, “Carpet Of The Sun”, “Mother Russia”, “A Song For All Seasons” and “Ashes Are Burning” and is a fine souvenir of a perfect musical evening.

Rock-Blues Review: Big Brother & The Holding Company-Sex, Dope & Cheap Thrills

Release Date: November 30, 2018
Label: Columbia/Legacy

Brother & The Holding Company with iconic lead singer Janis Joplin, had a sophomore album titled Cheap Thrills that would catapult them to stardom and introduced the world to Joplin. Sex, Dope & Cheap Thrills is a risqué title for an album and it was 1968 so as one can imagine, that title was nixed by the label for fear of public retribution which would equal poor sales. This was a typical reaction from label brass at the time. I think the album would have found just as much popularity regardless of any title it had. This double CD set restores the band’s original intent for that blockbuster release.

Within this set, there is an essential new collection of 30 rare performances including 29 studio outtakes and 25 previously unreleased tracks from the mythic 1968 sessions that generated Big Brother & The Holding Company's Cheap Thrills. This also debuts a previously unreleased live performance of a smokin’ hot “Ball and Chain," recorded live at Winterland Ballroom on April 12, 1968.

As far as I am concerned, Janis Joplin was one of the greatest blues singers that ever graced a stage or studio. I think this set will reaffirm that statement and younger fans will come aboard the Big Brother and Holding Company train after hearing this music. Joplin’s emotion-soaked vocals and painful releases of those emotions can be heard in her vocals and the accompanying music. One listen to “Turtle Blues (Take #4)” tells the story of her mastery over the blues.

What I found extremely interesting was reading the CD booklet included with this set. Some history I was unaware of was brought to light. The notes from Dave Getz and Grace Slick were certainly a great addition to this set. The picture of a very young and beautiful Slick and Joplin gets your mind reeling and wondering what was going on in that particular moment in time. If we only could look at a picture of the past and just step in to check it out real time, that would be amazing. Alas, we can dream of moments such as this and realistically get everything we possibly can from the music, words, and pictures provided.

“Oh, Sweet Mary” is an excellent track (7) on the first disc. The band and Joplin are just cranking it out with the pedal to the metal. I really appreciated her vocals when she sang and didn’t scream but I do realize that was part of how she conveyed the raw emotions of the songs to her audience. “Piece of My Heart” (Take 6) is so convincing. It sounds like Joplin is singing right from her toes directly to her heart. She always did sound that way regardless of what song she sang. “Catch Me Daddy (Take 1)” gets off to an interesting start as the sound engineer tells the band “Keep playing if you fuck up, I want to get something down.” Well, it doesn’t get any more realistic than that!

The second disc opens with “Flower in The Sun.” The track has a clean sound and the musicianship is spot on of course. Joplin matches that fine playing with her typically emotive singing style. She was “the” blues mama of her day, there is no doubt about that fact. The track is above average and a different take on their style and output of the day. Being a slight step away from what their audience was accustomed to was likely looked at as taking chance, but now we get to hear the more experimental side of the band. “Oh, Sweet Mary” continues on with that method and it takes on a different style and approach than what you heard on disc one and one that I really appreciated. The extended guitar solo is excellent and it really shows just how tight the rhythm section was. This was one amazing band and this particular track proves just how good they were and could be if given the chance to cut loose free-form style in the studio.

Janis Joplin and Big Brother and The Holding Company were the real deal and it simply does not get any more down and dirtier than some of these cuts. This is the way blues rock was meant to sound like, filled with emotion, blood, sweat, and tears. And that is exactly why Joplin showed up at the right time for the band, she was the final piece of the puzzle that made it all happen. Hearing all this archival material is a great way for any music fan to turn back the hands of time and relive the sessions for the first time.

Note From Columbia/Legacy: Of the 30 tracks showcased on the 2-CD edition of Sex, Dope & Cheap Thrills, only five have been previously released: “Summertime (Take 2)” (on a 1993 Joplin compilation); “Roadblock (Take 1)” (on the 1999 Cheap Thrills reissue); “It’s A Deal (Take 1)” and “Easy Once You Know How (Take 1)” (both on the 1999 “Rare Pearls” disc in the Box of Pearls set); and “Magic Of Love (Take 1)” (from the Columbia/Legacy Record Store Day release, Move Over!).

Small Faces "Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake" 50th Anniversary Deluxe-Editions Released October 26, 2018

Immediate Records and Charly Records To Release 50th Anniversary Deluxe-Editions of London rock legends' 1968 psychedelic masterpiece across various formats

Immediate Records and Charly Records are to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Small Faces' much loved third album “Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake” with the release of a variety of new and very special deluxe editions across various formats (including deluxe triple 180-gram red, white & blue coloured vinyl LP box-set and a comprehensive 3CD+1DVD earbook set) on 26th October 2018.

To order Small Faces “Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake’’ 50th Anniversary Deluxe-Editions:
http://smarturl.it/ImmediateStore

The 180-gram vinyl LP formats have been newly mastered at half-speed for optimum sound quality and pressed in conjunction with Optimal : Media in Berlin and The Vinyl Factory in London from restored original Immediate Records tape sources. Originally recorded during 1967 and 1968 by Glyn Johns at Olympic Studios, Trident and Pye Studios, the expanded editions of “Ogdens’’ also feature rare material from the archive of surviving Small Faces member Kenney Jones.

“On 'Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake' you can still hear it's a real band firing on all cylinders, great dynamics and everyone equal in their musicianship. The story within concerned an amazing journey and it was exactly the same for us too - a fantastic journey” - Kenney Jones, 2018

All editions have been prepared under the watchful eye of Small Faces reissue producer and Immediate Records label manager Rob Caiger with remastering engineer Nick Robbins (Soundmastering Ltd) and vinyl cutting engineer Matt Colton (Alchemy Mastering) and approved by Kenney Jones.

Talking about the mastering process for this 50th Anniversary, reissue producer Rob Caiger says: “Listening back to the original first pressing of 'Ogdens' on both mono and stereo, we've captured a lot more purely because we can do so much more with the technology we have now, cutting more information to the vinyl than was able to be done back in the day because of the limitations of technology then.”

Remastering engineer Nick Robbins stresses how important it was for the new editions to stay true to the original LP: “I'm not concerned with how it might sound in the context of a modern recording. I think that's a mistake. I think it's much more important to bear in mind the context of its period rather than think 'Most records these days are really whizzy so I should make this the same.' No, you don't do that - that would be a mistake. The records have their time and sound has its time. And it's important to remain true to that.”

Mastering Engineer Of The Year Award winner 2018, Matt Colton explains the half-speed cutting process to produce a 33 1/3 rpm LP: “Cutting at half-speed offers a better transient and dynamic response, more defined and accurate sound, extended low frequency and smooth high frequencies. Basically, the band really kicks arse on the half-speed cut in a way that it doesn't cutting at normal speed. The sound fills the room, Kenney's kick drum is punching you in the chest, the guitars are pushing the amps to the edge of distortion with a beautiful blues tone and it just delivers a more musical experience. There's more power there than cutting at normal speed and that is really satisfying.”

A red, white & blue coloured vinyl 180-gram half-speed mastered 3LP box-set (Immediate IMBX012) boasts a new softback 12” x 12” 72-page book full of Gered Mankowitz photos, original artwork, rare memorabilia, in-depth sleevenotes and interviews conducted with band members over many years by journalist & writer Mark Paytress, plus introduction by Kenney Jones. LP1 consists of the original mono mix of “Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake,” LP2 features the album's original stereo mix, whilst LP3 boasts a plethora of rare tracks released for the very first time on vinyl, all providing a fascinating snapshot of this key period in the acclaimed British band's career.

The comprehensive new 3CD+1DVD earbook set (Immediate IMEB012) comprises both original mono and stereo versions of the album together with a third CD that boasts an expanded version of the vinyl box-set's bonus LP disc, additionally featuring gems such as the rare American single versions of “Mad John” and “The Journey” plus the much sought after mono “Afterglow Of Your Love” (Alternate Single Mix), previously only released as a long sold-out 7” vinyl single for Record Store Day 2015 and made available here on CD for the first time. The contents of the vinyl book are also reproduced while this edition's DVD boasts a real gem; although “Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake” was never attempted live (in part due to its sheer complexity), the band did perform seven of the album's twelve tracks on one occasion - the 21st June 1968 edition of BBC TV's Late Line-Up Colour Me Pop show. This BBC TV studio performance is included on the new box-set's DVD. Previously only available in grainy quality on a long-deleted VHS video release and as part of a hard-to-find DVD compilation, this new box-set's audio & visual DVD content has been cleaned-up and is presented here in the best quality possible.

All editions have been assembled by Grammy-Award winning graphic designer Rachel Gutek who has had access to the Immediate Records original artwork files.

“They were the most complete pop group for me. They had everything - they were amazing players that all had the same influences. The image, the haircuts, blimey they were even all the same height. A kinda dream band that everyone would want to be in” - Paul Weller

The Small Faces story starts in July 1964 with vocalist & guitarist Steve Marriott, bassist Ronnie Lane and drummer Kenney Jones all sharing a bill at the Albion in Rainham, Essex as part of their own respective bands. Marriott, Lane and Jones met up again months later in a local music shop - the J60 Music Bar - and struck up a conversation whereby they discovered a shared love of American blues and R’n’B. Marriott was invited to play live with Lane & Jones' that evening in Bermondsey but following a particularly rowdy show where Marriott smashed up the venue's piano, they were sacked and ended up planning a new band together - the beginning of the Small Faces.

The band's rise was stratospheric, with the new group playing their first out of town show at Peter Stringfellow's Mojo Club in Sheffield in July 1965, accepting a residency in London's Cavern Club in Leicester Square and signing with heavyweight manager Don Arden before releasing a debut single, “What'cha Gonna Do About It,” on Decca Records in August, which quickly ascended to No.14 in UK Singles Chart. When third single “Sha-La-La-La-Lee” reached No.3 five months later and their eponymously-titled debut LP also reached No.3 in the UK in the summer of 1966 (and with original keyboard player Jimmy Winston leaving the band at this point to be replaced by Ian “Mac” McLagan), the Small Faces had truly arrived.

Acrimoniously splitting from manager Don Arden, the band made an inspired move when they signed to Andrew Loog Oldham's Immediate stable in February 1967. Oldham saw Marriott/Lane as the obvious replacements for the Jagger/Richard songwriting team that had thus far helped afford the fledgling record label its insouciant cool (and big hits). Liberated by the move to their new independent confines, the band could now completely spread their wings; releasing a well-received, accomplished first LP (again entitled “Small Faces”) for Immediate in June 1967, also finding the time to reflect that summer’s psychedelic reverberations two months later via non-album Top 3 hit single, “Itchycoo Park,” before finally blasting it out of the park in December 1967 with the astonishing single “Tin Soldier,” their first collaboration with newly-signed Immediate label mate P.P. Arnold.

The band were at something of a strange juncture as they entered Olympic Studios, London with engineer Glyn Johns in late-1967 to commence the recording of their third long-player. The credibility afforded 'rock' acts as opposed to those considered mere 'pop' was still of crucial importance at this time in British music history and, having already achieved four UK Top 10 singles in 1966 (including a No.1 hit with the mighty “All Or Nothing”) plus three Top 10 singles in the first few months of 1967, the pressure was now somewhat on to make that leap to timeless authenticity by delivering a truly great album. To add to the pressure, Immediate Records was suffering cashflow problems, inter-band relationships had become strained following a period of extensive overseas touring with The Who and the band's frontman Steve Marriott was constantly questioning the group's place in the musical firmament.

The decision was made to stop touring and give the band time to write a bigger record - the four musicians spent February 1968 working up tracks on three different boats cruising up and down the Thames, studio time was unlimited and the band members also took the opportunity to relocate to the countryside from the inner city, a new domestic scene perfectly captured in Andrew Loog Oldham's choice of first single from the forthcoming album, “Lazy Sunday” (Steve Marriott had wanted to release the heavier “Song Of A Baker” with “Lazy Sunday” as the B-side, but Loog Oldham stuck to his guns). Having rowed with a member of The Hollies, both accusing the other of never singing in their own natural accents, Marriott quite deliberately ramped up his vocal cockney tones on the single which reached No.2 on its release in April 1968.

“One of the great English rock LPs” - Mojo

The Small Faces' third studio album, “Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake,” was released by Immediate on 26th May 1968, soon sitting pretty atop the UK Album Chart where it enjoyed a six week reign at No.1 that summer. The LP was housed on its original release in a round circular sleeve featuring a replica of the Thomas Ogden metal tobacco tin that inspired the album’s title. “Ogdens’’ was a proper game-changer - a brave British psychedelic rock statement that oozed jaw-dropping rock, soul and R'n'B, played by four remarkable young musicians completely at the top of their game. Whilst side one dazzled with the sheer power of Ronnie Lane's “Song Of A Baker” and the heavy soul of Marriott's “Afterglow” (belatedly reworked into the band's final official studio single, “Afterglow Of Your Love”) plus a liberal dash of Cockney knees-up on aforementioned first single “Lazy Sunday” and “Rene,” the LP's second side premiered the band's six-song fairytale of Happiness Stan and his quest to find the missing section of the crescent moon, the six track cycle linked via narration by comedian Stanley Unwin, his words suitably twisted into odd shapes via his unique, surreal 'Unwinese' linguistics.

“Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake” was the landmark album that the Small Faces had always threatened to make - both a critical and commercial highpoint and one that would finally afford them the real rock credibility that had thus far slightly eluded them. The album's whole was something truly psychedelic and new - at times almost childlike in its innocence, but at the same time infused with the band members' complex emotions and already slightly world-weary experiences. It seems incredible that this was a group a mere three years away from its humble beginnings in the sweaty East End pubs & R'n'B clubs of its birth.

A major influence on acts such as Led Zeppelin, Sex Pistols, The Jam, Blur and Oasis and almost universally acclaimed on its initial release in May 1968, “Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake” has gone on to appear in countless best album polls (it was voted #59 in Q Magazine’s Top 100 Greatest British Albums Ever poll in 2000 and was voted into Mojo’s Hall Of Fame) whilst The Guardian more recently described the album as, “A groundbreaker.”

In addition to these new 50th Anniversary deluxe editions of “Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake” on 26th October 2018, surviving band member Kenney Jones has also recently published an acclaimed autobiography, “Let The Good Times Roll,” via Blink Publishing, writing extensively about his time drumming with the Small Faces, the Faces and The Who (amongst others), speaking openly about his own personal cancer battle and his continued work to raise awareness via the Prostate Cancer UK charity and his own Rock 'n' Horsepower charity events.
