Instrumental Rock Review: Sammy Boller-Kingdom of The Sun

Release Date: March 20th, 2020
Label: Candyrat Records
Website

It takes a lot of talent and some good promotion to cut through all the noise of social media and the zillion other artists out there vying for your attention. If you do not have a hit on today’s radio stations and you play instrumental rock, well, let’s just say the chances of you becoming the next Joe Satriani are slim to none.

There are some exceptions to that rule and every once in a while, then some young six-string gunslinger gets my undivided attention. Let me introduce you to Sammy Boller. Never heard of him? Well, I didn’t either but now that has changed and it will for you too once you hear his killer new album Kingdom of The Sun.

Make no mistake, this guy is smokin’ hot people! He is one of the best I have heard in some time. The single and title track “Kingdom of the Sun” was released on January 17, 2020. It is an amazing track that rocks start to finish with some great melodicism albeit at lightning speed. The album drops on March 20th and a limited vinyl run will be available as well. It will sound amazing on vinyl, considering how great my digital copy sounds right now, I would not give it a second thought getting the 33rpm platter.

In one of the statements in his one sheet one person says “He is a state-of-the-art rock guitarist.” I would agree with that 100%. A lot is going on with those fingers and he sounds like two players going full tilt instead of one. The sound he creates is crisp, clean and it is always filled with rhythm, and every track offers something different with sound, emotion, color, and atmospheres. When I hear talent like this it sounds so pure, like the man was born to do this and nothing else. His gifts are obvious after one listen to Kingdom of The Sun. Sammy grew up wanting to be Randy Rhodes and Eddie Van Halen, well it sure looks as though he is showing a powerful combination of both of those influences.

Sammy also is a regular contributor with his article Secrets of Shred with Guitar World Magazine, which has a loyal following. So, he is willing to share his knowledge with his readers so they can learn how to play as he does. I wish you the best with that and you had better get a Metronome!

On 11 tracks of superb guitar virtuosity, Sammy takes a listener on an instrumental rocket ride. His playing is on a level few ever attain. I felt immediately turned on with his sound but also found familiarity with what I was hearing. I am a big Satch fan so it was easy for me to dive into this but it had to be exceptional right out the gate without it subsiding. The energy level of every track is top-notch, it just comes at you in many different paces with different spaces being filled in the most superlative way.

One of my favorite tracks and a great example of Sammy’s talent is “Temple of Time.” He coaxes some amazing sounds out of his well-worn electric six-string. The track exudes a power that is simply electric with pinpoint accuracy. If you enjoy guitar-oriented instrumental rock you will be playing Kingdom of The Sun a lot, I can guarantee it. Check out the stream provided of the title track single and video of Sammy playing “Cloak of Light.”

Kingdom of The Sun is an instant classic as far as I am concerned and you need to hear it if you like to rock, it is as simple as that.

mariaFausta has a killer new track out titled "I'm Betting on You."

And I am betting on you, the listeners, that if you like to rock you are going to love this track! I sure did.

Maria can sing and the song just kicks ass from start to finish. I think if the album that follows this track continues with the same formula that she will really have a substantial following.

I have included the stream and the video to check out so please do!

Track Feature: Katie Bogle - Think Of You (A Lot)

Katie Bogle's new track "Think of You (A Lot) is the kind of energetic and rhythmic pop you would hear blasting out of your radio on hot summer day.

The track has a great flow as Katie sings with a warm and infectious tone. And this a good thing considering she is singing about someone she really cares about. So yes it is sincere, but a lot of fun too.

Now that is the way it should be with a good catchy pop tune! So roll down the windows and crank up the volume!

Katie Bogle is a queer female artist based out of the northwest suburbs of Chicago. The singer/songwriter has dedicated her solo career to making original pop music with upbeat rhythms and simple melodies.

Heavy influences range from nostalgic 90’s acts like Third Eye Blind, blink-182, and Alanis Morissette to the pop infused, dance-rock stylings of The 1975 and Jack Antonoff. Bogle has channeled each of these artist’s styles to create her own edgy verses and catchy choruses while contemporizing the lyrics and song structure.

Featured Track: Love Ghost-Quiet Voices

Love Ghost is back with their second track feature on Rate The Tracks.

"Quiet Voices" is not so quiet really. The artwork is most certainly dark and demented, and the music is a good match to what they are trying to convey in the song.

I think what the message is here is that the "quiet" voices can be just as effective and dangerous as the ones that scream.

They pull out all the stops and make this a real alternative rock-punk juggernaut. The seemingly quiet voices from the lead singer turn into a more convincing and powerful one to go along with the crashing rhythm section and in your face guitar lines.

"Quiet Voices" is like an early morning wake-up call and a warning as to what is to come if you don't pay attention. They really do get your attention on this track in every way possible!

Featured Track: Andrea Arpetti-Quite A Show

Andrea Arpetti is a musician, vocalist and music teacher. Straight away he sounds like one of those diverse multi tasking indie artists, and he most definitely is.

His new track is "Quite A Show." It is a combination of dance/electronica, complete with the thumping beats, which drives the track, and some acoustic guitar to give it another layer, and a nice touch I may add.

Andrea has a very clear vocal style that sounds like it could wrap itself around just about any track in a large cross section of genres. Not everyone is blessed with that kind of talent and capability. With his education and knowledge of music and all the talents at his disposal, I can envision a long and successful career with the right backing in place.

Track Feature: Love Ghost - Mr. Blue

Love Ghost is an up and coming Alternative Rock band. They reminded me fondly of Green Day on the new single "Mr. Blue."

There sound is rythmic and powerful. The track has an up and down emotion that drives it. The pace of the track changes a lot, however, when it reaches the chorus it erupts into a magnificent rock track.

Love Ghost sounds like they pulled out all the stops on Mr. Blue. The tracks sounds like it is radio ready to hit the charts.

Actually it is much better than a lot of what you hear these days on your local stations. I think streaming has saved us from all the crap on the radio and it is bands like Love Ghost that are leading the way.

Track Feature: Joanne Lazzaro and Susan Surftone: Lava Walker - Live at Kulak's Woodshed

Joanne Lazzaro is a renowned flutist and her partner on guitar, Susan Surftone, has made her mark over the years with the six-string.

Their recently released single is titled "Lava Walker."  The combination of Joanne's amazing mastery of the flute and the acoustic guitar of Susan serves as an excellent marriage of two instruments.

The flute is used in many genres of music however I believe when it comes to world-new age music, it just feels like its right where it is supposed to be.

"Lava Walker" was caught live at Kulak's Woodshed and the video gives you the pleasure of being there. After hearing this track it makes you want more. I hope to hear an entire album along these lines soon!

Rock LP Review: The Rolling Stones Beggars Banquet 50th Anniversary Deluxe LP Set (Ltd. Edition)

Release Date: November 16, 2018
Label: ABKCO

The limited-edition vinyl release of The Rolling Stones Beggars Banquet 50th Anniversary Deluxe LP set features a gatefold jacket, 180-gram stereo vinyl, a bonus vinyl 12" "Sympathy For the Devil" single in mono (backed with an etching of the original release's "toilet" cover), and a replica of the Japanese bonus flexi disc featuring a 1968 phone interview with Mick Jagger is also included. This edition is wrapped in the "RSVP" cover art.  How is that for music fans, especially Stones enthusiast? It is quite a beautiful package to enjoy.

The thing bands like the Stones and Zeppelin did with the blues is what made them so popular. Taking rudimentary blues songs and turning them into delicious morsels of rock, literally owning the song within their own framework and interpretation. This is something that is still going on to this day but not at that level. For the Stones, how could they possibly top the apex of their career Their Satanic Majesties Request? I do not think it was a matter of toping the first release, it was more important for the band to come up with something different than their last release to keep it fresh. And more importantly, feature their creativity and hold on to their prospective audience. Well, they always managed to do that and Beggars Banquet was no exception. On the copy of the Japanese flexi disc Jagger responds to the question from the interviewer if the album is going sound similar to the last release. He retorts “It is different than the last album, it’s supposed to sound different.”  It is a bit difficult to make out what Jagger is saying at times because the telephone lines were not as advanced and clear as they are today. With that said, it is a nice addition to the set just the same.

Beggars Banquet was a superb album, one of the many classics the Stones would record during their career. This (for me anyway) has to be in the top five of their greatest achievements. The additional things that make this set so special will surely make all music fans appreciative. The record labels have become very innovative with the packaging of vinyl releases such as this. If there is not enough room to fill one side of vinyl, what is the option? Some cool etchings that’s what! It really is a bonus to see that kind of space utilized smartly particularly in this case where the original releases toilet cover is featured. I personally appreciate any kind of art related to the music and if it comes in one package that is just the icing on the cake.

The sound on vinyl is amazing, of course, what else would I say right? Everything sounds great on vinyl and for all those years I thought CDs were the bomb and they could never come up with a cleaner sound, wrong! We have come full circle, even with all the streaming services available and device options to listen to music, you simply cannot challenge the “complete” musical experience that vinyl can offer. This is one great example of how to celebrate an iconic album and I am sure we will see many more to come.

Stereo or Mono is always good, I do prefer stereo. Listening to “Sympathy For The Devil” in mono is different of course, but that being my favorite track, it sounded just as wonderful hearing it again after listening to the original stereo version. Having one track on an LP side harkens back to the days of 78 wax.

“Street Fighting Man” was another incredible track that stands up well today. The Stones created music that is timeless just like their UK friends The Beatles. Their music was so different that there really could not be a rivalry for the same audience. Some love the Stones and vice-a-versa and there is no argument. Myself, I love both bands and appreciate all their contributions to modern music.

“Stray Cat Blues” is a great track that gets back to their earlier blues roots but is more polished and defined then what you would hear on their first few releases. They certainly had their own sound and Jagger’s vocals were unique. The maturity of the band comes flowing through with ease on this album.

Besides having such a wonderful package to hold in your hands and spin on your turntable, you get a limited-edition release with all the trimmings. I think Beggars Banquet has stood the test of time and so will vinyl during this second resurgence. Like Yogi Berra quipped “Its déjà vu all over again.”  But isn’t it sweet to do again with all the extras? I think so.

Featured Track: Children of Aleppo-By James Alexander Featuring Úyanga Bold

"Children of Aleppo" was developed for the Original Soundtrack, Alternative, World and New Age genres according the artist James Alexander.

The song is dedicated to those that cannot speak for themselves. It is a message to man from the heavens.

The music is texutred with many colors and a beautiful atmosphere that reaches your soul instantaneously. It is prolific instrumental music meant to have an impact on the listener. Once you understand what the track is about then it really hits home.

Video Stream- Ghost-Rats

Ghost has a new album out titled Prequelle. I am betting this is their best yet after hearing several cuts today. This track is called "Rats." It looks like Papa Emeritus has new character and look to introduce as well.

Ghost is a very visual and theatrical band, they are quite entertaining. Beware, they are not for the faint of heart, but keep in mind this is an act. I can guarantee one thing, if you love metal, this band will quickly become one of your favorites.

Featured Track: Erik Scott-Wings

Erik Scott is getting ready to release another solo album titled A Trick of the Wind.  This is following his critically acclaimed In The Company of Clouds, which I had the distinct pleasure of reviewing.

To give you a taste of what is to come we are presenting the track sampling of "Wings," the opening track on the album.

Erik takes his bass and makes it a lead instrument on every track and "Wings" is a fantastic curtain opener.

Erik knows how to make his bass sing and it takes the listener off the ground, seemingly allowing you to spread your "Wings" and fly away.

Erik Scott is a gifted musician delivering the goods once again through tracks like "Wings."

Featured Track-My Creative Laziness-Just Great

My Creative Laziness (Ricardo Flores) sounds like he got some energy and put it to good use by recording a jumpy track called "Just Great."

I think the track really is "Just Great." It has an alternative garage rock kind of sound that I really enjoy.

Tracks like this prove that less is more and Rick shows how its done with riffs that reminded me of Weezer.

The man definetly has talent and knows how to channel that laziness! So yes, his "creative laziness" did work out well with this snappy track!

Give it a listen and see what you think. If you feel its "Just Great," then leave your comments.
