More..A Lot More About This Great Band! And This Is Only One Decade..

1965

In the San Fernando Valley, just north of Los Angeles, James Lowe, Mark Tulin and Ken Williams meet and decide to form a band.  The decision is made to concentrate on recording rather than learning cover songs in order to play parties and dances.  Dedicated to their goal from the start, their first drummer, Steve Acoff, is fired for deciding to go surfing instead of attending a rehearsal.  James introduces the band to Mike Weakley, a neighbor from Kansas who brings a real Rhythm and Blues feel on the drums.  A keyboard player, Dick Hargraves, is brought in and Mark switches to playing the bass.  This band becomes "The Sanctions".

1966

"The Sanctions" evolve into "Jim and The Lords".  Dick Hargraves gives way to James Spagnola, who quick earns the nickname "Weasel".  The band now consists of  Ken and Weasel on guitars, Mark on bass, James on vocals and harmonica, and Mike on drums.  They play a few local clubs but remain focused on recording.  An audiophile friend of James, Russ Bottomley, has a home studio and it is here they record what will much later be released as "The Sanctions/Jim and The Lords" (Heartbeat Records).  The music is rough but shows their roots in blues, rock and surf.

The band is rehearsing in Mark's garage when his father invites Barbara Harris, who is standing outside, in to listen.  She likes what she hears and arranges for the band to play the birthday party for a friend (who would turn out to be the husband of one of the women who wrote "Too Much To Dream", Annette Tucker).  It is at this party they meet Dave Hassinger, at the time an RCA staff engineer who works with The Rolling Stones when they came to Los Angeles.

Dave tells the band that before he would consider recording with them he wants them to go home and learn to play Beatles songs like The Beatles, Rolling Stones songs like The Rolling Stones, Byrds songs like The Byrds...This way when they are in the studio they have reference points and will understand how to get certain sounds.  After a few months of intensive rehearsal they all get back together and the decision is made to go into the studio and record a single.  The 45 had "Ain't It Hard" (featuring James Lowe's only recording turn on bass) as an A-side and "Little Olive" as the B-side.  With this record the band got a one release deal with Reprise records, but they needed a different name.

Insert your favorite how they got their name story here.  Grapes...jokes...Mick Jagger...Flying pie plates...Whatever.

When the time comes to sign a recording contract Mike Weakley refuses to sign and quits the band.  Preston Ritter comes on as the band's drummer.

"Ain't It Hard" does absolutely nothing and Warner Brothers drops the band.  Dave gives the band several songs to work up for the next session.  Among the songs is the demo for what sounded like a country ballad, "I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)".  Dave liked the title and told the group to make it into something they could record.  Another bout of sessions are scheduled, this time at Leon Russell's house on Skyhill Drive.  The recordings included "Luvin'", "Hideaway", and a cover of a Hollies song,  "Way of My Own".

Reprise resigns the band and makes Dave Hassinger a staff producer.  "Too Much To Dream", which the record company calls "the weird one", backed by a Lowe/Tulin song,  "Luvin" on the B-side, starts making some noise in the Pacific Northwest late in 1966.  If it holds on through the holiday season they might have something.

1967

The record continues to grow in popularity and by January they have a full-fledged national hit record;except in New York City, which thought it too strange ("Too Much To Dream" is now recognized as possibly the first psychedelic hit record).  The band hustles back into the studio to record their first album at American Recording in North Hollywood.  It is at American, along with engineers Richie Podolor and Bill Cooper, that the band will do the remainder of their recording in the 1960s.

The band hits the road.  Their first tour is of the Pacific Northwest and it is in Spokane where they first hear their song on the radio.  Their second tour takes them through the South.  Their tour itineraries include performing with acts such as The Beach Boys, Cream, Luvin' Spoonful, Steppenwolf, Jefferson Airplane, and Buffalo Springfield. Throughout the year they remain constantly on the road, only taking time off to record their second album "Underground".

"Get Me To The World On Time" is released and becomes their second hit record.  This time the record is a bigger success on the east coast than on the west coast.

It is during the "Underground" sessions that relations with Dave Hassinger hit rock bottom. The  band and their producer do not agree on the direction to take.  Dave wants to turn out a hit, another "Too Much To Dream"(The best example of such an ill-conceived attempt is "Dr. Do-Good" with Dave Hassinger's "vocal" at the very end). The band wants to take their music even further outside, more experimental (this includes using as many experimental instruments as possible including the short-lived Vox Organ/Guitar).

During the recording of "Underground" Preston Ritter leaves the group and is replaced with the return of Mike Weakley, now known as Quint.    Later on in the year Weasel gets sick and is replaced by Mike Gannon on guitar.

"Underground", when released, is met with resounding indifference.   However, the band, continues to maintain a grueling tour/recording schedule. Before leaving for a European tour the band undertakes what will be their last studio recording sessions for over thirty years when they perform "Mass In F Minor".  Written and arranged by Dave Axelrod, this project marks the beginning of the end for the band.  After recording one track it is decided by everyone but the band that the complete group, with Mark being the only one to read music, is taking too long to learn the songs; studio musicians are brought in to replace Ken and Weasel.  Only Mark and Quint play on the remainder of the sessions.  James, sometimes backed by a Canadian group, "The Collectors", does all the vocals.

The band, now consisting of James, Mark, Quint, Ken and Mike Gannon (replacing Weasel who gets too sick to tour), take off on a tour of Europe. This includes a tour of Europe, where in Stockholm they are recorded by Swedish Public Radio.  These recordings will later be released on Heartbeat Records as "Stockholm 67" and remain the only live recordings of the band from that period.  For the tour a European single is released containing "Never Had It Better" (always a part of the band's live shows) and "Everybody Knows You're Not In Love".   These two songs will not appear anywhere else until 2002 and the release of the compilation CD "Lost Dreams" on Birdman Records.

While still in France Quint decides to quit the band and stay in Europe.  Upon returning to the U.S. Quint is replaced by Joe Dooley, who tours with the band but never appears on any of their 1960's recording.

1968

"Mass in F Minor" garners some national attention, including an article in Time Magazine, but sales are disappointing. The band continues to tour until finally with virtually no existing relationship between the band and their manager or producer, tensions within the group come to a boil.  Following a few weeks of arguing while on the road, James quits the group.

The Electric Prunes, without James Lowe, attempt one more tour.  The band now consists of Ken, Mark, Jeromy Stuart (keyboards/vocals), and Kenny Loggins (guitar/vocals).  This tour is a disaster for audience and performers.  The band has no drummer and incapable of playing any of the hit records.   Upon their return to Los Angeles the remaining members of the band quit.

The original members of the band, the ones responsible for their sound and records, will not play again for over thirty years.

Psych/Pop Rock Review: Blurred Vision-Organized Insanity

Release Date:  6th April 2015
Label: Cherry Red Records

The Ancient One finds yet another new band, Blurred Vision, with their debut release, Organized Insanity, has landed on the review desk. The band have been backed/endorsed by one Roger Waters (yes, one of the founding members of Pink Floyd) which has brought them a fair bit of acclaim, which I have to admit has passed me by totally.

Blurred Vision is a 3 piece band comprising Sepp Osley (vocals, guitar), Sohl Osley (bass) and Ben Riley (drums), although there is a guest also listed on the album information, Joel Lightman (keyboards, vocals). The information from the record company suggests the band has a style that would be classed as prog/psych/pop rock, which seems to be a fairly wide grouping.

Organized Insanity is an 11 track album with a total playing time of around 48 minutes, with the title, and final, track “Organized Insanity” being the longest on offer at 5:30 minutes. At the other end of the scale, the shortest track is “All I Wanted” running on for just over 3 minutes (3:21).

The opening track on the album, “No More War” (4:02) is a slice of very pleasant guitar pop which starts with the voices chanting the title. The track continues with some very catchy guitar riffs behind the clear vocals provided by Sepp. Around the halfway point there are media messages about war behind the catchy themes. Latterly, the music drops away to give a melancholic trumpet passage, which then builds up to a recurrence of the opening them. The track leaves with a last chant of the title and has gone.

“Rollin On” (4:35) retains the immediacy of the opening track but is taken at a slightly slower pace. “Tonight” (3:40) is again a gentler tempo track with a simple acoustic guitar, piano and vocal starter. The track builds up to a higher tempo with some excellent drumming and a very powerful piano presence. This is one of the shorter tracks but it still is very quick to “get into your head.” “Long May You Run” (4:41) has a drum/organ intro with more of the crystal clear vocals. This is a very gentle track with some stunning electric guitar work around the halfway mark.

A return to the more up-tempo driving guitar style on “The Promise” (4:08) is immediately followed by another acoustic led anti-war song, “Dear John” (4:26), which although gentler in tempo has more of that superb lead guitar work. Track No 7, “Arms of our World” (4:26) sees the piano play a more prominent part in the intro. This is a very harmonious gentler track with some (synthesized?) strings which provide real depth to the track, and another of those shimmering guitar passages takes the track out.

“All I Wanted” (3:21) has a very familiar feel to it, with jangly guitars and a hook line that just gets you right away. Around the 2 minute point there is a wondrous keyboard passage that simply soars. “Wherever You Are” (3:48) is a step into the gentler piano/guitar arena again, although after the 1 minute mark the pace builds up and the track drives along.

“The Keeper” (5:11) has the sound of the countryside fading into a “killer” guitar passage. The vocals appear, but not in English, although it is the feel that sets the scene and the vocals revert to the norm after a few moments. Another tremendously catchy track with some of the little guitar riffs getting under your skin very quickly. Tempo changes and chunky guitar passages ensure your attention is always kept on the music.

The title track “Organized Insanity” (5:30) has a symphonic style start with an ascending scale into drums and guitar. The keyboards continue with a stunning theme before the vocals arrive with some excellent harmonies. Tempo changes keep your senses on the track as the music builds and ebbs and flows. There are some terrific chunky guitar riffs and keyboard/piano themes. Towards the end of the track, the lead guitar gets a chance to soar, and does exactly that.

This is an immensely enjoyable debut album by a new band, and I would go more for the psych/pop rock rather that prog as a descriptor of the music. Not a poor track on the album, with hooks here, there and everywhere mean that even on a single hearing, some tracks have embedded deep into your grey matter.

This release, Organized Insanity, should very quickly increase the fan base of this band. This is definitely worth a listen, or two, and although I normally suggest making up your own mind, I feel quite sure that there will be no disappointed listeners. Watch out for the name, Blurred Vision, becoming a much wider known name in music circles.

Rock Review: The Pretty Things-The Sweet Pretty Things (Are In Bed Now, Of Course)

Release Date: July 10, 2015
Label: Repertoire Records

Recently, I had the displeasure of being exposed to some truly awful music.  I am sure that those of you who have spent time listening to music on YouTube know what I am talking about: the repetitive beats, the abuse of auto-tune, the distorted vocals/screams, the nonsensical lyrics, and the ripping off of more popular songs.  It is the kind of music to make one question what we are doing as a species.  Fortunately, I received The Pretty Things’ new album, The Sweet Pretty Things (Are In Bed Now, Of Course), and it reminded me of the all good, enriching qualities of music.

The Pretty Things originally came together as a band in 1963 in London, and have been going strong ever since then.  Coming out of such a rich time for rock music, it is not too hard to see how these guys might have been overlooked and not been as big as bands such as The Beatles or The Rolling Stones.  But it is never too late to discover great music.  With over fifty years as a band and a couple of personnel changes, The Pretty Things are Phil May (lead vocals), Dick Taylor (lead guitar), Frank Holland (guitar), George Woosey (bass, guitar), and Jack Greenwood (drums, percussions). The Sweet Pretty Things (Are In Bed Now, Of Course) is their twelfth album and first album in some years, and we find them in superb form.

The album crackles with energy on the opener, “The Same Sun” The opening guitar riff is elegant and rich, and the drums add just the right touch to complete the song’s sweet, psychedelic rock sound. The hypnotic chorus rounds everything out. “The Same Sun” is one of those songs that could have been released at any point in the last fifty years and still be amazing regardless of any popular music trend topping the charts. Coming out with bit of a more kick to it is “And I Do.” It is another mesmerizing rock song with a fresh, invigorating sound. I have to say that Phil May’s voice sounds great, even as he enters into his seventies. There are vocalists half his age who wish they could sound this good.

Next up is a cover of The Byrd’s “Renaissance Fair.” This is a quality tune.  It is a short song with a light, upbeat sound and a bit of surreal atmosphere.  The second and final cover is of Sky Saxon’s “You Took Me by Surprise.” This song is an ace of a song. It is one of the heavier sounds on the album, making for a great hard rock sound with a sweet groove to it. “Turn My Head” takes things in a slightly different direction.  The sound is lighter and more harmonious, making for a very pleasant sounding rock song.  There is a bit of sing-along quality to it.  The drums rumble right along and the guitars just sizzle near the end.  “Dark Days” has an interesting sound.  There is an ominous atmosphere lingering behind the harmonies that makes for one memorable track. It is not quite the end of the world here, but you can see it coming on the horizon.

“Greenwood Tree” is just an excellent instrumental with some dazzling music.  The drums are on point and really cut loose for a solo that is worth the price of admission.  Another gem of a song, “Hell, Here and Nowhere” starts off slow and has a western/outback vibe to it, evoking images of wide plains, dusty towns, and mysterious wanderers. Opening with sweet, rhythmic drum beat “In the Soukh,” is pure melodic poetry. The background vocals are quite soothing when backed by the methodical drumming.  Bringing it on home is the powerful and controlled “Dirty Song,” perfect for taking out the lighter.  It is the kind of ending that leaves a lasting impression.

The Pretty Things’ The Sweet Pretty Things (Are In Bed Now, Of Course) is like a breath of fresh, clean air after wading through the rancid trash of some of today’s popular music. This album is a must for The Pretty Things fans, rock fans, and music fans, in general. After all these decades, they still have plenty of life left in them. Many musicians and bands from the sixties did not make it long past that decade, if they even made it that far. This is not true of The Pretty Things. The Sweet Pretty Things (Are In Bed Now, Of Course) is proof that The Pretty Things are not a band merely of or from an era, but are a band for the ages.

Sixties Music Legends The Chocolate Watchband Releases New Greatest Hits Album “I'm Not Like Everybody Else”

Los Angeles, CA – When discussing legendary psychedelic garage bands of the 1960's, the Chocolate Watchband is at the top of the list. Much to the elation of fans and music critics, this famed sixties group has recorded a new album of their greatest and most popular tunes entitled “I’m Not Like Everybody Else” to be released May 26 on Purple Pyramid Records. Recorded at KVP Studio in Santa Clara, CA, the focus on this album was to faithfully reproduce the sound of the Chocolate Watchband in the 60's with the rawness and energy of the originals. Also added were bonus verses and extended track mixes of 13 personal and fan favorites. “The Chocolate Watchband is back on the scene and ready to rock!” says Tim Abbott, guitarist and producer of the album.

“This release is all new recordings from The Chocolate Watchband. I had the privilege of premiering some of these songs on the 2010 Bay Area Garage Band Marathon on KKUP Cupertino. This is an incredible set of vintage garage from one of the true legends of the sixties. With this album, there can no doubt the power of their music still speaks to a whole new generation,” says Phil Dirt radio DJ

The goal was to re-create the sound and energy of the sessions with producer Ed Cobb, from the first three Watchband albums that were recorded for Tower Records in 1966, '67, and '68. Electronically reproducing the reverb of the old 'Echo Chamber' from American Recording studio in Studio City, CA, different percussion instruments were added including sleigh bells, tambourines, chimes, temple bells and more exotic instruments like sitars, harpsichords, theremin and bouzouki that gave the original recordings their distinctive sound.

Featuring:
David Aguilar - Vocals, Harmonica, Percussion
Bill Flores - Bass
Gary Andrijasevich - Drums and Background Vocals
Tim Abbott - Lead Guitar, Keyboards, Sitar, Flute, Bazooki, Harmonica and Background Vocals.
Alby Cozzette - Electric, Acoustic, and 12 string Guitars, and Background Vocals.

The Chocolate Watchband formed in San Jose in 1965. The band's music was described as “a blend of 1960s-style garage and psychedelic rock with a distinguishable ‘Rolling Stones’ San Francisco sound.” Produced by Ed Cobb, the group's early music combined the influences of blues with a psychedelic edge that featured terse lyrics and instrumental experimentation. The Chocolate Watchband appeared in the 1967 film 'Riot On Sunset Strip' and the 1968 film 'The Love Ins'. The band released three highly acclaimed LPs from 1967 to 1969 before disbanding in 1970. In 1999, they reunited at the San Diego event 66/99 in San Diego, CA, organized by musician/journalist Mike Stax. They continue to play today at garage rock festivals in Europe as well as the States with Little Steven, The Yardbirds, Love, The Zombies, Bo Diddly, Iggy Pop, the Strawberry Alarm Clock and the Electric Prunes.

Rock Trio Blurred Vision To Release Debut Album and Tour With Uriah Heep

Easy to see why a band whose young career began with the support and endorsement of Pink Floyd founder Roger Waters, is being hailed as an iconic band in the making with their debut album.

London, UK - Blurred Vision is a 3-piece progressive/psychedelic/pop rock outfit comprised of guitarist & vocalist Sepp Osley, bassist Sohl Osley and drummer Ben Riley. The band's career was launched in 2010, when the endorsement of Pink Floyd founder Roger Waters brought them international acclaim.

Blurred Vision release their debut album 'Organized Insanity' on April 6, signed to a worldwide distribution deal through Cherry Red Records (UK). 'Organized Insanity' reveals personal stories of the modern day culture of relationships and love, while also touching on controversial themes of war, politics, religion, and the state of the music scene today. Produced by multi platinum selling producer Terry Brown, the band's unique style varies from the progressive and psychedelic rock of the 70’s, the mystical and exotic sounds and melodies of the Mid East, to an amalgamation of contemporary and unique new Rock ‘N’ Roll songs with memorable hooks and great pop sensibilities.

Says Sepp, “When we wrote 'Organized Insanity' we knew right away it was a title that would define our debut album. It not only depicted the personal relationships we were in at the time that were inspiring some of the songs on the record, but also the broader more global theme of the struggles our generation faces in our world today. Relationships, Love, war, religion, politics...all formed to make what is the first chapter of our band's musical story.”

UK music writer Malcolm Dome, writes in the latest issue of Prog Magazine (UK): “...a debut album that will surely be one of the best of 2015.” Full article here: http://prog.teamrock.com/reviews/2015-03-06/blurred-vision-organized-insanity

The Next Generation Of Psych Bands Bring A New Mind Expanding Perspective To 12 Classic Beatles Songs!

Los Angeles, CA - Their popularity among music fans is undeniable, their status with music critics is unimpeachable, and their influence across a multitude of genres - from pop to rock, world music to country - is thoroughly indisputable. Yet The Beatles’ ubiquity makes us forget that there once was a time when this UK band was truly dangerous, a radical cultural force pushing its way into the mainstream to the shock and horror of many. Now, a new generation of psych rock bands seek to bring back that sense of danger to the Beatles' music, taking twelve classic compositions by the Fab Four and filtering them through modern sensibilities to bring a whole new perspective to these celebrated works. The resulting project, The Magical Mystery Psych Out - A Tribute To The Beatles, will be released on both CD and vinyl by Cleopatra Records on March 3.

German acid rockers Electric Moon kick things off with the song that many consider the defining birth of psychedelic rock music, “Tomorrow Never Knows” from Revolver, here given a new depth and sense of urgency with walls of distorted guitars and haunting female vocals. Sugar Candy Mountain chose a rarer tune from the same era, the B-side single “Rain,” and came up with a version more sinister yet stealthily hypnotic. The band echoed the thoughts of many artists on the album when they declared that recording a Beatles song is simultaneously “fun and intimidating.” Matt Adams, here performing “The Word” as The Blank Tapes, elaborates on this idea saying “The Beatles recordings have always been untouchable to me, but I jumped at the chance to do my own take on one of their songs. I tried staying true to the original but changed some of the sounds and stretched out the ending.” Fellow UK acts such as The KVB and The Underground Youth also turn in inspired versions that would make their countrymen proud, and together with US rising stars The Vacant Lots and Strangers Family Band, recreate for modern listeners the thrill that ‘60s audiences must have felt like hearing such strange, enticing, and far-out sounds for the first time. With an appropriately mind-blowing painting by San Francisco-based artist/illustrator Matt Leunig, The Magical Mystery Psych Out is coming to take you away!

Stoned - A Psych Tribute To The Rolling Stones - 14 Shining Stars Of The Neo-Psych Scene Reinterpret Classics From The Rolling Stones!

Includes performances by Clinic, The Vacant Lots, Celestial Bums, Allah-Las, Pure X, The Tulips, Tashaki Miyaki, and more!

Los Angeles, CA - EVERYBODY MUST GET STONED!…Dylan declared in ‘66 just a year or so after The Rolling Stones got their initial hit of major commercial success with arguably the most addictive song of all-time “(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction.” It was their first international #1 single, and a high they would chase (and catch!) for the next 4 decades as they would go on to create one of the most mind-blowingly potent canons in modern music. But if you think you've plumbed the depths of the Jagger/Richards pharmacy, just wait until you hear what the newest psych rock junkies do to these well-known tonics. From The Vacant Lots’ stimulating take on “She Smiled Sweetly” to Clinic’s hallucinogenic version of “I Know It's Only Rock & Roll (But I Like It),” these young bands take Stones classics to places they’ve never been before. The full album entitled Stoned - A Psych Tribute To The Rolling Stones featuring 14 tracks will be available everywhere starting January 20 from Cleopatra Records.

The Allah-Las, like many of the bands featured here, dug deep into the Stones vast catalog for their cover of the 1963 gem “Stoned.” Meanwhile, Barcelona quartet Celestial Bums declared, “We are very honored that we got the chance to do that since for us The Rolling Stones is probably the best rock band in history. We chose ‘Child Of The Moon’ for being quite an unknown song that at same time has an amazing essence of their psych period.” L.A.-based trio Tashaki Miyaki shares, “Covering a song by such a legendary band was a bit daunting. We delved a little deeper into the Stones catalog to find something less heard that would compliment our band's sound. ‘Take It or Leave It’ seemed like the right vibe.” Of course, more well-known songs such as “Sympathy For The Devil,” “Gimme Shelter,” and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” also got the psych remake treatment with astounding results. Available on both CD and vinyl, Stoned - A Psych Tribute To The Rolling Stones has the cure for the musical boredom that ails you!

1. Lorelle Meets The Obsolete - What A Shame
2. The KVB - Sympathy For The Devil
3. Shiny Darkly - Under My Thumb
4. Yeti Lane - Sway
5. Clinic - It’s Only Rock & Roll (But I Like It)
6. Sons Of Hippies - Gimme Shelter
7. The Vacant Lots - She Smiled Sweetly
8. Celestial Bums - Child Of The Moon
9. Tashaki Miyaki - Take It Or Leave It

Two New Experimental Psych Rock Projects From The Venerable Austin TX Scene Scheduled To Land On October 14!

Los Angeles, CA - Home to South By Southwest (SXSW), one of the largest and most prestigious independent music festivals today, Austin TX has long been renowned for an abundance of extraordinarily talented musicians and bands who push at the edges of rock music’s boundaries, artists such as Roky Erickson (13th Floor Elevators), Spoon, The Black Angels, Explosions In The Sky, and many more! Following in those prestigious footsteps come two brand new projects that venture into the wild blue Texas yonder: first, a new album from legendary psych space institution ST 37 called I’m Not Good, and second, an adventurous improvisational collaboration from the collective known as My Education / Theta Naught Sound Mass, called Sound Mass II: Spiritual Docking. Both albums will be released on October 14 by L.A. independent record label Cleopatra Records!

Since their formation in January 1987, Texas psych/space rock legends ST 37 have released a slew of critically acclaimed albums and shared the stage with artists like Sonic Youth, Acid Mothers Temple, Hawkwind, Chrome, and Guru Guru, all of whom have been influential in the development of the band. In fact, the band draws its name from a song off of Chrome’s Alien Soundtracks and more recently, longtime ST 37 member SL Telles joined Guru Guru co-founder Mani Neumeier and Jürgen Engler of Die Krupps on the new krautrock project Guru Freakout. ST 37’s newest offering, I’m Not Good, finds the band challenging both themselves and audiences with densely layered compositions that entrance and astound!

My Education / Theta Naught Sound Mass, on the other hand, is a joint venture by two extremely well regarded post-rock bands, My Education and Theta Naught. Pairing classical string instruments (cello, viola) with standard rock elements (guitar, bass, drums), this duo produces a gorgeously cinematic soundscape along the lines of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and early Pink Floyd. Sound Mass II: Spiritual Docking, as the title suggests, is a sequel to the 2011 recording that first brought these two bold and fearless collaborators together. And like their previous effort, this album is a daring partnership between two highly adventurous improvisational bands!

The dirt road of psychedelia is taking you back to the place where it started. Dig it!

Alternative Rock Review: Birth of Joy-Prisoner

Release Date: March 4, 2014
Label: Long Branch Records

Born out of a sound reminiscent of sixties rock on overdrive, this band has it going on. Psychedelic sounds meet the crooning essence of The Doors, Pink Floyd and MC5. Birth of Joy is a threesome based out of Amsterdam but their fandom is growing to international proportions. The members are: Kevin Stunnenberg (vocals & guitar), Bob Hogenelst (drums & backing vocals) and Gertjan Gutman (organ & bass).

In 2013 Birth of Joy performed over 97 concerts all over Europe. The sixth album in a very respectable lineup Prisoner features the band in their best form yet. In November 2013 Prisoner was recorded and produced by Joris Wolff and mastered by Brian Lucey. A blend of blues, metal, grunge rock and a bit of stoner punk, this album curled my toes a little. I haven’t turned it off for a week now.

You know an album resonates when you find yourself humming it in your off hours. “Grow” is one of those tracks that comes grumbling and screaming to life with a hollow blazing kick start. Percussion and guitar grind and roar. Textured vocals scrape and smear themselves over the piece. It is modern art—a sheer roller coaster ride of gutsy essence. It is a finger in the eye to anyone who tries to check one box on the music spectrum. I love it.
“Prisoner” is the title track to the album. Chains drag across the floor. Hollow voices drift across the background and shuffle into a dirge of a background. It’s a different kind of piece to be sure. Monotone at the outset, you get an inkling of an Orwellian world staring back at you—the all seeing eye watching everything you do. Loss of innocence in a dystopian world resonates with this clanking and whirling cacophony of music.

“Keep Your Eyes Shut” has to be one of my favorite pieces on the album. Smooth and full of Doors style sliding vocals, this one will stay with you long after the music stops playing. Heavy percussion, organ music and guitar blend with Stunnenberg’s vocals to give us a proper concoction of musical mayhem.

Birth of Joy’s sixth album is a blend of sounds. Not just one genre, it crosses borders to show just how versatile these artists can be. An international success, this band is a touring machine. I wish they were coming to Houston. Admittedly I liked the grunge sound the best with “Grow and “Keep Your Eyes Shut” being my favorites on the album. If you like the Doors, the grit of bands like Nirvana or even the smooth elements like the Smithereens then you have to check these guys out.

Psychedelic Music Legends The Electric Prunes Release New Live CD 'WaS'

Los Angeles, CA - Electric Prunes fans are buzzing with excitement about the release of a new CD of unreleased live material titled 'WaS'! Featuring 15 slamming cuts to keep you up at night! American psychedelic rock group The Electric Prunes first achieved international attention in the late 1960s. The band performed their 1966 hit song “I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)” on American Bandstand, and were also recognized for the song “Kyrie Eleison”, which was featured on the 'Easy Rider' soundtrack. After a period in which they had little control over their music, they disbanded for several years. In 1999, much to the delight of their fans worldwide, The Electric Prunes reformed, and resumed recording and touring!

And now an interplanetary message from James Lowe of the Electric Prunes...

“The Electric Prunes invite you, our closest friends, to a new adventure! WaS. That WaS the Electric Prunes! It has been a long journey here and we have waited till the planetary alignment was correct for a new release. The lunar eclipse signaled the start of something, tho no one is sure exactly what? We offer WaS as the saucer to fast forward you to the cosmic finish.

There is a fine line between 'IS' and 'WAS'. If what you did is more important than what you are doing, you WAS. One moment you is and then you was. Somehow 1967 doesn't seem much different from today; tastes change but I think people are always on the lookout for some fresh ideas from the 'is' that makes them remember the 'was'.

Mark Tulin and I were collecting ideas and songs for our last adventure when he went through the door. I am not sure he is really gone because I hear his voice as clearly as if he were standing beside me. Usually, Mark and I would send each other song ideas back and forth until we had the rough story line and music in hand, then we would meet and pound everything into submission. This CD is a collection of those final ideas and messages between us and that is all we set out to present here; but a funny thing happened on the way to the recording studio. A new idea emerged behind a gig in Tokyo in an unusual snowstorm, and then someone sneezed on a girl in the subway, and a frozen winter chilled the planet; suddenly there were new thoughts, fresh ideas and new places to sketch our story in song. Everyone in the band felt it. Like a blast of energy. The 'was' became 'is'.

The Electric Prunes have always been a little on the outside. Maybe it was the name? Maybe the music? In all, we have released 8 actual album offerings from the band (there are a few pretenders from the record company that we discount). Our legitimate recordings represent our thinking and, in some cases, lack of thinking. We were never mainstream enough to fret over what went on the records; witnessed by some of the goofy cuts we have released, we were just happy to be able to record our thoughts. It seems fitting that we release this 9th offering with the same abandon. This is a garage band and is not meant to be taken seriously. The music here is from all layers of the band from 1966 to 2014. This is a cool album, maybe the last we will ask you to support. But we do hope you will post it on the web and dance to it in the moonlight on 11! There is even a music video by the band for TOKYO floating around! Please bring your friends because the band wants to go out and play live one more time and we need you for that. Tell your local club to invite us. We will come.... We WaS but we still Is ....”

The 15-track CD features a throwback version of “Smokestack Lightning” from 2000 that was the band's reunion call-to-arms with Ken Williams on lead guitar, Quint back up on drums, Mark Tulin on bass and an occasional harmonica by James Lowe. Original noise! There is also a live version of “Bullet Thru The Backseat” from a night in Bristol England featuring Williams, Lowe, Tulin, Dooley, more original fare.

That leaves 13 original new songs to be explored. “Earwash” for the initiated!
