Bentley Jones The Rebellion Review

Pop star and social magnate Bentley Jones returns with new sonically triumphant album ‘The Rebellion’. Mixing classic rock with pop sensibilities, interspersed with dance inspired beats, Bentley is carving out a new genre all of his own.

The album is brazen mix of Bentley’s previous work and an exploration into a totally new sonic landscape. Articulate, brilliant and haunting this album is both emotive and evocative with nods to the likes of Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris and Katy Perry.

The Rebellion’ is a slick, cohesive release with a statement of intent. Featuring a lead single of the same name, the whole album showcases a mature, confident songwriter who knows what he wants and will break down walls to get it.

‘The Rebellion’ is available worldwide on November 6th

UK Hitmakers Cutting Crew Release First New Album In Ten Years! OUT NOW!

London, UK - CUTTING CREW has announced details of their first new material for ten years. The multi-million selling, Grammy nominated UK outfit fronted by Nick Van Eede were responsible for one of the biggest hits of the 1980s - with (I Just) Died In Your Arms – and the band’s revelatory new album entitled Add To Favourites is their strongest to date and is OUT NOW on In Like Flynn Records, via Cherry Red Records.

A single from the album – the Jackson Browne/George Harrison-tinged Till The Money Run$ Out - was released on September 4th. With some glorious Californian harmonies Van Eede sings “Now you said that you like to play the field/And I should get over it/But when all of your games got to be revealed/I was the last to hear of it,”

It’s hardly surprising that (I Just) Died In Your Arms is seen as songwriter Nick Van Eede’s greatest achievement and yet this Pyrrhic victory surely masks Van Eede’s subsequent song-writing collaborations with artists including Mika, Pixie Lott, Marillion and Cher.

Add To Favourites, which features guitarists Gareth Moulton and Joolz Dunkley, bassist Nick Kay, keyboardist Jono Harrison, drummer Martyn Baker and the Blackjack Horns, is Van Eede’s “tip of the hat to artists I’ve always adored” – from Otis Redding to Frank Zappa(!)

The album also tackles weighty subjects such as relatives and friends gone too soon (Van Eede lost both his younger brother and his long-time Cutting Crew bedfellow Kevin MacMichael some time ago) on Looking For A Friend and the Berlin Wall on Berlin In Winter which Van Eede performed live in Berlin at the 25th Anniversary of The Wall’s demise last November.

Van Eede has revealed that he wrote “80% of the album under water” and the album’s startling artwork featuring our protagonist emerging as a knight from a swimming pool is inspired by the fact that Van Eede is a supremely gifted swimmer and that several of his friends have suggested he would be able to swim a mile whilst wearing full body armour. A full UK tour – due to take place above ground - is set to be announced in the next few weeks.

Indie Rock Superstars Salute The Thin White Duke With All New Interpretations Of David Bowie’s Best!

Features performances by Kittie, Dum Dum Girls, Electric Six, Rogue Wave, Heartless Bastards, The Muffs and more!

Los Angeles, CA - David Bowie’s career has been defined by his unique ability to make artistically complex and challenging music sound like mainstream pop…ok, maybe pop music from an entirely different planet, but pop music all the same. As a result, the definition of rock music has expanded; Bowie never went mainstream, the mainstream always came to him. For these reasons and more, he is one of the most deeply revered and profoundly influential artists in modern rock. And nowhere can Bowie’s influence be felt more than in the world of indie rock, where bands and artists have taken Bowie’s fiercely independent streak, commitment to artistic integrity, and a diverse array of musical styles into the 21st century and beyond. Now, a truly impressive gathering of indie and modern rockers have gathered to pay tribute to the man with A Salute To The Thin White Duke - The Songs Of David Bowie to be released on both CD & vinyl as well as mp3s on October 2 courtesy of Cleopatra Records.

Among the participants is the all-girl alt metal Canadian quartet Kittie who expressed a sentiment shared by many of the artists here, “We are so excited to be able to contribute to this amazing tribute album. ‘Space Oddity’ is arguably one of David Bowie's most well known songs so we put all of our efforts into doing all of its intricacies justice, while still retaining our signature, heavy sound.’ Meanwhile, Detroit’s own Electric Six made no bones about their preferred Bowie era, saying “We had to do ‘80s Bowie because frankly, we couldn't trust the earlier Bowie. And the ‘90s Bowie is, well…So ‘80s Bowie was the one for us, and ‘Blue Jean’ was just sitting there waiting for us to club the shit out of it, and, man, did we club it!” Similarly, Zach from Rogue Wave had this to say of “Modern Love,” the song that opens the album, “My favorite Bowie song from his tailored suit era. All that uptempo beat and those chugging horns couldn't hide the sadness of what it means to come down to earth.”

Jared Artaud from The Vacant Lots succinctly expressed the challenges of approaching Bowie’s music, “It’s hard to touch Bowie. He’s an architect. What he’s done, you can’t make it better, so we wanted to reconceptualize it & approach the song from another point of view.” And The Tulips offer this entirely accurate description, “Covering a Bowie tune was like jumping into a cab and realizing there's a tiger sitting shotgun, and no one says a word.” A wild ride indeed! And fans of Bowie will find this collection of covers equally as thrilling!

Track List
1. Modern Love - Rogue Wave
2. John, I’m Only Dancing - Jesca Hoop
3. Letter To Hermione - Dum Dum Girls

Bentley Jones – ‘The Prequel’

Bentley Jones is a man of many talents – not only he is a qualified personal trainer, he has competed in gymnastics, swimming and martial arts, is a classical dancer – last year he performed in a sold-out show with the Birmingham Opera Company – and a renowned musician. As PHUNKSTAR he has produced remixes for some of the biggest names in pop music, from Ariana Grande to Katy Perry, and as a composer has contributed to soundtracks for game franchises including Sonic the Hedgehog. And now, as Bentley Jones, he is debuting tracks from the forthcoming EP, ‘The Prequel’.
Jones accepts that his success has come not from following others but from breaking rules; after charting unexpectedly in Japan, he became the first ever British artist to release an album on major label AVEX, recording songs in Japenese as well as English. He has also appeared with pop artist May J., collaborated with rapper SHUN and given the approval superstar Ayumi Hamasaki. Not bad for a musician from the West Midlands.

While in Japan, he was heralded as the next big thing in music, and he is living up to expectations with his latest release. Comparisons to the likes of David Guetta and Avicii are not unwarranted on electronic track ‘Follow You Down’, while ‘So Much More’ approaches punk pop. Jones reveals his remarkable vocal range on ‘Axiomatis’ (ft. The TRUTHSt4lk3rz), a track on which he collaborated with his fans, who wrote lyrics, contributed backing vocals, and even appeared in the music video. Jones is devoted to his fans – he often spends time taking part in Livestreams, YouTube Q&A sessions and Twitter exchanges with his followers – and, by all accounts, his fans are dedicated to him, and with this release, he is about to make many more.

Eclectic Pop Music Artist Anthony W. Rogers Releases 'Smile-Era' Influenced Sophomore Album On Limited 180 Gram Vinyl

Cumberland, MD - Musician/multi-instrumentalist Anthony W. Rogers announces the release of his second solo album entitled WRONG. The new ten song collection of originals was performed and recorded entirely solo and is now available on limited 180 gram vinyl and download formats.

A stylistically diverse and decidedly homemade effort, Rogers recorded WRONG alone at his home in rural West Virginia from 2011-2014 through a multi-track recording layering all the instrumental parts and vocals.

Says Rogers, “It's a process I'm used to from the old days and it fits the schedule of my life. On this recording, the cheap equipment I used and the way I used it, is really primitive by 2014 standards. I enjoy it that way. I get a certain perverse kick out of achieving sounds and sonics cheaply.”

Anthony Rogers is a long retired veteran of the local tri-state music scene in many rock and jazz bands in his youth. Rogers continued to blaze his trail through the Washington DC area writing recording and performing original music with local favorites The Now and Ten Below-a band which originated in Frostburg. Besides playing on several recordings while in DC, Tony also performed as drummer on several occasions behind legendary DC vocalist and Grammy winner Eva Cassidy and in several other jazz combos.

WRONG was prepared for release with Chris Biondo (Cassidy's musical collaborator) at his facility in Kensington Md. Rogers also recorded with Biondo as engineer on Rogers' 1994 solo debut 'Identifiction'.

Tony relates that, “I did most all of the mixes at home except for 'Keep Holdin On’'which we re-did at Chris'. On the way in, I walked past his multiple Emmy awards he won for his TV music (Nat Geo, TLC, etc). He has the best ears and intuition of anyone I've been lucky enough to be around. He knows what I'm going for. I trust him and his opinion completely.”

Although there are no plans presently to return to live performance at this time, this album signals a return to recording activity. “I'm better off to use what very little time I have recording creating and writing. I have a full life outside of this.  It takes a lot of sustained focus,” says Tony.

Those lucky enough to hear the dizzying and stylistic effort seem to favor the harmony laden wistful look-back track, “White Beach” (about Rogers' home town); the closer - “Johnny/Janie” a 1950's influenced let's runaway theme sung masterfully by his then nine year old children Audrey and Joe Rogers (“People really seem to like this one. It’s easy to understand”); to the more adult themed guitar feedback drenched tribute to his tragically deceased childhood friend Mitch Sanders, “Crunch” (“It's kind of a twisted blues song for a twisted situation”); and finally, the centerpiece mystical acoustic quasi-prog penultimate track…”Wash” (“the main lyrical gist of the whole record, really”).

As to the influence of Smile, Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, Tony says that "there is no question that the vocal arrangements that Brian did in his heyday are so firmly imprinted on my mind from my youth, it is an integral part of me and my own sound. I bought all the Beach Boys bootlegs, tape trading, past masters stuff since the 70s-Smile is a pillar of modern musical achievement. Brian would be prominent on MY own personal musical Mount Rushmore."

Says Rogers, “This was designed to be an LP. A two-sided, two-part, two-gals record album. The vinyl package is beautiful. This was made for vinyl people. Top notch 180 gram heavy vinyl, great color artwork, inner sleeve, and lyric insert. The idea is to get out your headphones, play side one, then take a break and then do side two. Like two separate EPs. No CDs this time (like 'Identifiction'). With downloads, Ipods, phones, even CDRs, you can make your own.”

WRONG is certainly one of a kind… and you can get copy in most cool independent stores in the mid Atlantic/Pennsylvania area and the great Solar Mountain Records in Keyser,WV.
WRONG  is also available through the standard download sources (iTunes, CDBaby, Amazon). WRONG is the first release on the Wildflow Unlimited record label which seeks to feature and promote artists on vinyl.

Pop/Rock Review: The Beatles-U.S. Albums Box Set

Release Date: January 21, 2014
Label: Capitol
When the time comes for the 100th anniversary of The Beatles arrival in America I will be long gone, unless between now and then they invent something that will prolong life indefinitely. If they did it would be kept a secret unless we have another planet to live on besides earth. Beyond all of the hypothetical mumbo jumbo is the simplicity of another era that did not have computers and luxury items were color TVs and Cadillac’s. There was no internet, personal computers, iPads, flat screen TVs or cell phones. We had a TV with 3 channels, that’s right 3, and the movie theaters to step away from reality. I guess you could say that was our reality TV of the day was the movie theaters, both indoor and outdoor. And we had this thing called imagination that we used on a daily basis and brains that had to think and remember things without pointing and clicking to get an answer in seconds…and we had those fabulous long haired young men from Liverpool that won our hearts and ruled the airwaves of local radio stations. All you had to do was turn a knob and you were transported. It was much less complicated back then and easier to live from day to day.

I believe the iconic Fab Four (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison) will be celebrated with as much appreciation and joy as they were this year in another 50 years. We just enjoyed their 50th anniversary of arriving on these shores with a TV special and a recently released U.S. Albums box set and I would expect more of the same in the future. We have never seen the likes of this band and it is likely we never will again. What they did was historical, groundbreaking and flat out commercial genius. There is no way I could possibly be brief when discussing The Beatles, they were the fabric of the society I grew up in. As a 5 year old boy I clearly remember watching them perform on The Ed Sullivan show (in black and white) and being frustrated that I could barely hear them playing because of all the screaming girls. I was too young to be buying 45s and albums by the mop tops so I listened to my brother and sisters records who were 8 and 4 years ahead of me.

I have been writing music reviews for over 15 years now and have had the pleasure and honor of covering many great recordings. It was my turn to join in the celebration of the greatest band that ever recorded rock and pop music. They continue to influence artists all over the world and are right at the top of the heap as the most beloved performers along with Elvis, Frank Sinatra and The Rolling Stones. There certainly are others to add to that “A” list but to this music fan there was not anyone that could possibly compare for the all-around impact on culture, daily life, commercialism and popular music than The Beatles.

The Beatles paid their dues for many years and lived with very little so they could play there music and get their shot at stardom. It all broke loose once they came to the U.S. The 13 disc box set has one additional disc called The Beatles’ Story(an audio documentary), a 64 page booklet and promotional art of the day. Those extras are not part of the package I received for review however I did have digital access to all of the artwork. I was the lucky recipient of the 12 CDs which sold separately and that was just fine and dandy with me. All the CDs come packaged like an import in the cellophane fold over sticky seal top and the thin paper binder along the spine. I like that style of packaging and the fact that the CD cases are cardboard replicas of the original albums is a treat as well. 11 of the original albums are presented in mono and stereo so you get to sit through a replay of each song with a different sound. There are not a lot of bands that I could sit and listen to like that, very few in fact. I never tire of The Beatles and their songs because all of them always sound so good. I think the fact that they crafted such accessible tunes made them universal. For the older fans there are so many memories and emotional attachments to the music that you find yourself absorbing it all again and again just like you did when the album’s first came out. They will always have that magic that holds you spellbound and in an eternal time capsule. It’s a wonderful thing that is treasured by all who understand exactly what I am talking about. The inner sleeves have additional protective cellophane sleeves that fit right inside the paper sleeve so you end up having three different layers of protection for the CDs. Note that the Hey Jude and The Beatles’ Story are in stereo only. A Hard Day’s Night (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), The Beatles’ Story, Yesterday And Today, Hey Jude and the U.S. version of Revolver are presented on CD for the first time. Yesterday And Today features the original legendary “Butcher” album cover of The Beatles posing with raw meat and baby dolls. The option of a layover sticker comes with it to put over the famous cover if you find it unappetizing or repulsive. It’s a nice quality sticker and an extra that one would not expect.

I know many people including myself bought the remastered complete box set in 2009 but keep in mind that this set has many different unique aspects that the larger box set does not. Some examples besides the previously mentioned bonuses are “I Want To Hold Your Hand” track sung in German which translated to “Komm, gib mir deine Hand,” or the instrumental and orchestral versions of tracks. This current set combines some of the previously issued mono and stereo box sets into one set with several different nuances to sweeten the pie for fans and collectors alike.

From where this music fans sits you can never go wrong with The Beatles and there seems to be a lot of creativity and different versions of songs that add to the overall history of the band which in turn gives us all hours and hours of enjoyment for the rest of our lives or as long as we choose to listen. Now that is something you cannot put a price tag on.

5/5 Stars

MoonJune Records to Release International Debut of Belgian Singer/Songwriter/Pianist Susan Clynes 'Life Is...' on February 18, 2014

New York, NY - “Life Is...” marks the international debut of Belgian singer/pianist Susan Clynes, on New York based MoonJune Records. This release was compiled from three live concerts done at two different locations, each one with a unique band configuration.

The Archiduc, an historic Art Deco bar in Brussels dating back to 1937, served as the backdrop for two of these performances. The first was done in trio format with Nico Chkifi on drums and Pierre Mottet on bass. The second was a more intimate solo performance at the Library of The Cultural Center of Bree. The third and final performance saw the return to the Archiduc, this time as a duet with Simon Lenski on cello. Each band configuration provided its own framework and pallet of tonal colors for these diverse sound portraits.

“A Good Man” and “Ileana’s Song” make playful use of the drumkit and bass. These clever songs lie somewhere between Slapp Happy-era Dagmar Krause, Elaine Di Falco’s work with Thinking Plague, Annette Peacock and early period Kristin Hersh in her band, Throwing Muses. The chiefly instrumental piece, “Les Larmes”, a composition about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, is brimming with emotional expression making excellent use of the cello as a universal human voice.

The distilled and emotive songs for voice with piano accompaniment bring to mind such undervalued luminaries as Laura Nyro and Essra Mohawk. Susan’s piano work runs the gamut from such radio-friendly performers as Tori Amos and Fiona Apple, briefly dipping into Tony Banks-like arpeggiations and cascades, and arriving at the jazz-inflected polytonality of French composer, Darius Milhaud.

Liner notes by Sid Smith:

“In my dreams the people speak, of who they are, and what they seek”

There are points in your life when you have to go with the moment. You donʼt always know what the consequences will be of such a choice, or if the path you go down is ultimately the right one. Yet in your heart of hearts you sense itʼs the right thing to do. You go with the moment and take that leap into the unknown.

Susan Clynes knows all about going with the moment and taking the leap.

“It was 2004 and I was in the final year at high school and I was attending a jazz summer camp in Libramont in Belgium. I had no clue as to what I wanted to do with my life and although Iʼd played music from a very young age, when it came to thinking about what to study at university, I was thinking about doing something not at all related to music. I didnʼt want to be a concert pianist or a classical composer or that kind of thing. As far as I knew there wasnʼt a school for the kind of music I wanted to do. So, I was probably on the verge of signing up to do something like philosophy or psychology not music. When one of the teachers at the camp heard I was thinking of going in a different direction he told me ʻYou have to study music: if you do it part-time youʼre not going to grow to your full potential.ʼ”

Her first CD, Sugar For A Dream, was released in 2005 (with Ramses Donvil on drums & Sebastien Thomé on bass) and in other circumstances could have heralded the beginnings of a standard singer-songwriter career path; courting the big labels and looking for the big breakthrough. Instead, Clynes followed the advice sheʼd received at the camp and went on to study composition, eventually obtaining her Masters degree at the Ghent Conservatory. The result was the emergence of a far more rounded talent, not only capable of mapping out the emotional geography of the heart and head at a piano in a solo concert, but scoring a viola concerto or guesting with Belgian prog-jazz outfit The Wrong Object.

That kind of open-mindedness is a crucial aspect of Clynesʼ approach and led directly to one of the partnerships featured on this album, another leap into the unknown. “I first saw cellist Simon Lenski with an Antwerp band called DAAU, part of the Rock In Opposition movement playing instrumental chamber rock. I loved what he did and so I called him to ask if he wanted to play with me. With Simon I didnʼt have to worry about explaining what the song needed. He immediately felt all that. Itʼs almost telepathic when we play.” Thatʼs certainly a quality that can be discerned in the exuberant interplay Pigeonʼs Intrusion and the rushing tension created during Les Larmes. “I want to make music that bridges the different worlds of songwriting and instrumentals of compositions and improvisation. I want to talk to the heart but not forget thereʼs also the mind.”

It was precisely these qualities which forcibly struck MoonJune Recordsʼ Leonardo Pavkovic after Clynesʼ husband Antoine Guenet, keyboard player with Univers Zero, recommended that his wife should sing on The Wrong Object's After The Exhibition, and in March 2013 suggested to Pavkovic that she should ʻjoin the great Moonjune familyʼ. “Antoine is really a driving force behind me and is always urging me to go forward. They often say behind every great man is a great woman but in this case the opposite is more than true” laughs Clynes.

Itʼs impossible not to notice the surging optimism coursing throughout Clynesʼ work in both the instrumental pieces and the songs which make up this album. Though some individuals become cynical, jaded or world weary, those arenʼt descriptions that could ever be applied to this artist. “Life is what you choose to make of it / will you stop or will you grow?” isnʼt just a line from the title track: for Clynes, itʼs akin to a personal manifesto. “I try to put in a positive message but without the songs sounding naive. Itʼs about having perspective and how you handle a situation. Not only about how to make the best of it but see it as an opportunity to make yourself be the best person you can be. You donʼt always have control of a situation but you do have a choice about how youʼre going to respond.”

The writing of the material on this album coincided with two significant events in Susanʼs life; the birth of her daughter, Ileana and the death of her aunt, Yoka. “While I was giving birth, Yoka was being cut open to find brain tumors in her head. She died of a rare cancer which she was born with and didn't know she had for most of her life.”

Clynes cites her aunt as someone who also was unafraid of going with the moment and taking that leap into the unknown. “She was always very passionate about plants, and just a few pages before finishing her doctoral dissertation, she decided to take a world trip and ended up just staying in New Zealand, founding a herb factory.” Having spent eight months working on the writing of the song itʼs easy to understand why Clynes regards Childhood Dreams as one of cornerstones of the album. “She lived her childhood dreams and taught me to savour each moment as though it might be your last.”

Itʼs eight years since Clynesʼ last album and in deciding to release live performances, sheʼs also putting her instinct for absolute perfection to one side, opting for a more spontaneous approach. “You can spend years making sure everything is just right, over- thinking everything. Obviously every artist can be a little hyper-critical of what theyʼve done and itʼs the same with this album. I notice that there are little things here and there that could be improved. But this is a statement about one moment in time where an artist does as good as he or she can in front of an audience.”

“Itʼs all about going with the moment and taking that leap. With 'Life Is...' we take the leap with her.”

His last vocal album, Up Against It, was a classic Texas blues and soul masterpiece that I still listen to on a regular basis. But, Delicious Days is an entirely new level on the house that Woody built and it sounds like a man who has truly found his sweet spot...READ MORE...
