Bill Bruford reflects on embarking on a solo career and forming Bruford: “I wanted to play drums in a certain way and if you want to hear them played in that way you've got to write the song. You've got to control the audio environment in which your drums are going to be heard and once you're doing that you're into a solo career. Looking back, the band despatched these tricky little compositions with a smile on its face; with brio, vigour and only a handful of wrong notes. The band was over-caffeinated - short on subtlety but long on the sort of majestic stately themes with antecedents in progressive rock that set it apart from contemporaneous American outfits. We were a rock group with a jazz sensibility, rather than a jazz group with rock leanings.”

“Bruford 1977-1980: Seems Like A Lifetime Ago” showcases the prodigious talents of Bill Bruford, Dave Stewart, the late Allan Holdsworth (who the album is dedicated to), Jeff Berlin and The 'Unknown' John Clark.

Says Dave Stewart, “The great thing about Bill is that he's not just a drummer. He doesn't just think about what he's playing...he's thinking about the whole picture; thinking about soundscapes; what the guitar is doing; the arrangement; the keyboard sounds and so on. He's got this composer/arranger mentality which was there from the beginning and he evolved through the life of the band. He's a deep-thinking musician and it was great working with him for that very reason.”

Jeff Berlin adds, “I learned a lot from Bill. Says King Crimson's Jakszyk on remixing “Feels Good To Me” and “One Of A Kind” into surround sound, “I use the original mixes as a guide and Bill handed over the whole 5.1 remix to me. It becomes an immersive experience. I'm not talking about flying instruments around 360 degrees. While that's possible it's also ridiculous...it's all about sculpting the sound into three dimensions. The new versions of these albums sound much bigger, fatter and warmer and whilst I'm keen to take credit for that the reality is that this is Dave Stewart, Jeff Berlin, Bill Bruford and Allan Holdsworth, and it's not just about their playing abilities; it's that they've got their sound together and what you need to do is replicate that and not mess about with it.”

In addition to collaborating onstage and in-studio with her own group—also known as Another Lifetime—she has toured and recorded with artists including Pharoah Sanders, Cassandra Wilson, Bill Laswell, Joss Stone, Joe Henderson, Al B. Sure, Buckethead, Don Pullen, Hugh Masakela, Buster Williams, and Angela Bofill. Cindy was part of the Tony Williams Lifetime Tribute Band called Spectrum Road with Jack Bruce, Vernon Reid, and John Medeski. From 1992 to 2007 and again in 2014 & 2015 she was the drummer in Lenny Kravitz's band, performing through multiple world tours and hit albums. In 2010, she was part of the all-star line-up performing “Bitches Brew,” a tribute to Miles Davis' seminal album staged at the San Francisco Jazz Festival and NYC Winter JazzFest.

More recently, Cindy has become the regular touring drummer for Santana. Having met several years earlier at a festival in Europe while she was touring with Kravitz, Cindy first played with Santana in spring 2010, when drummer Dennis Chambers had a previous commitment. “They have a great band vibe. It's nice to play with people who have grown together, built a sound together, and stayed together,” she says. “When that happens, you can create so many different levels of communication. That's what they've done, and I love reacting with it and being a part of it.”

Electricity onstage generated chemistry offstage—Carlos proposed to Cindy during a July 2010 concert, and they married in December. Looking ahead, they will collaborate artistically as well, on projects that will no doubt reflect their shared passion for improvisation, and belief in the transcendent nature of music. Cindy was an integral part of the new Santana/Isley Brothers release Power of Peace, featuring the song “I Remember,” which she wrote and sings. “To me,” she says, “music is completely spiritual, it's the way you connect with your higher self, with the universe. It's also a way to share light with millions of people. They don’t need to speak your language, have your beliefs, or be in the same place you are. The music speaks, it channels good energy, and makes a difference in people's lives. Carlos and I are both conscious of doing that.”

NARADA MICHAEL WALDEN started his storied career as a drummer with John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Narada's music flows freely from pop, rock and soul, to the rarified realms of jazz, fusion, and world music. With Jeff Beck, Narada wrote and played drums on the seminal album Wired that earned them both their first Gold Album. Walden was an integral part of introducing Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey to millions of fans worldwide, producing and writing their breakthrough hits. Billboard Magazine honored him as one of the Top Ten Producers of all time.

In 2016, Cindy connected with her fellow drummer and world-class producer NARADA MICHAEL WALDEN, and together the two have been working on new material ever since. Terry Bozzio Solo Project 1991:

I've never finished it over the years until now, because of technology problems (computer not fast enough to mix - midi & sync problems, & not enough track space to do overdubs etc!) but I always liked the compositional approach to the drum parts! I look at it as a missing link between guitarshop, and melodic drumming & the ostinato! The period after recording the drums included doing the lonely bears & polytown & changing to Mapex, then DW as well.

I have a new track to release. It's called “Advent”. It's the first in the Terry Bozzio Solo Project 1991 series. I went into Jeff Burton’s garage studio (he is the son of Elvis Presley's famous guitarist James Burton!), with Missing Persons' Live Sound Engineer (who has been my dear friend from the very beginning of that band), Gary Epstein. We recorded my drums on Jeff's 16 track 2” machine.

We managed to get 9-10 tracks down with a beatbox for a hybrid sound. With no idea of what it would ultimately be, I tried to improvise composed beats along with the beat box and create different sections, based on what felt was natural to do next. I had the concept of overdubbing the music on it later.

One thing we tried right away was to float in some vocal stuff I had done with Patrick O'Hearn in his studio at previous session a year before. The result was very good and inspired me to do more with other previous recordings. At that time I was living near Jeff in Studio City and had converted my garage into a little studio too. I called it White Rooms. I had a 3M 79 16 track 2” machine (bought from Gary Wright!) as well, & some early midi equipment and started to drag the midi overdubs via a sync tone from the 3M. A very slow and tedious process at the time!

But the magic was that 2 of my previously recorded vocal tracks, just done in free space up in Oregon w/ Pat, using my vocoder, synced up unconsciously, but perfectly with 2 of the drum track's structures! So it was meant to be.

I'm still not finished with all the tracks, but I have 4 almost ready to go, & coming soon! This is the first and it's called “Advent”. It means “a coming”. Burning drums, Bulgarian Folk Singing, and driving sequencer parts. I hope you like it!

Terry Bozzio Solo Project 1991:

I've never finished it over the years until now, because of technology problems (computer not fast enough to mix - midi & sync problems, & not enough track space to do overdubs etc!) but I always liked the compositional approach to the drum parts! I look at it as a missing link between guitarshop, and melodic drumming & the ostinato! The period after recording the drums included doing the lonely bears & polytown & changing to Mapex, then DW as well.

I compose in all styles (as one might classify them), from classical to ambient, electronic, film-like to fusion/rock or jazz. I have my own character or personality, it's unique. I work with many different processes from writing notes on paper, to recording live, to several different computer software applications that are suited to the particular result I am trying to achieve. Both Zappa & famed musicologist Nicolas Slonimsky encouraged me to compose & I have had my Chamberworks performed at the Vienna Jazz Festival & in Holland w/Metropol Orkest.”

He continued, “I first got interested in Art & Sketching at the encouragement of renowned artist Don Van Vliet (aka: Captain Beefheart) who I played with on my first Zappa/Mothers of Invention tour in 1975. Don was always carrying markers & paper & it looked like fun, so I bought some myself & started. He was very encouraging. Last year, I released my first project called Rhythm & Sketch in collaboration with the art group Scene Four. It's been successful & inspired me to do more.” (available at www.terrybozzioart.com)

Bozzio fulfilled major two and a half month US solo tours in 2014 and 2016 in which he displayed his artwork as the stage set while performing melodic, tuned melodies on his strikingly large drum set, to sold out crowds.

“I thought it would be great to share this music which I've been working on & keeping to myself for so long. I hope to show a different side of my expression from what people are used to seeing from my solo drumming. And, I wanted to have an abstract painting to represent & be paired with each title to create this hybrid project of music & art,” Bozzio explained.

It is over 70 individual pieces or movements of compositions with a painting in a booklet for each title, along with detailed liner notes for each piece, explaining his concepts, feelings, processes and approach for each. An Evening with TERRY BOZZIO US Tour 2016

Los Angeles, CA – Drum legend Terry Bozzio, known for his work with Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck, UK and his critically acclaimed solo ventures, celebrates his latest release “Terry Bozzio Composer Series” with “An Evening With Terry Bozzio” US tour! This will be a night of solo drumming and include compositions from throughout his career, as well as improvisation. It is by no means a clinic or a workshop. Enjoy an intimate evening of Terry Bozzio and his monster sculpture of a drum kit together for the first time in seated venues across Europe.

Unless you have seen Terry, you have no idea what you are in for. Bozzio is an enigmatic, evocative, and engaging musician whose instrument just happens to be the drums. Terry Bozzio is able to accompany himself with bass note patterns and, at the same time, melodically solo on top with highly developed coordination skills to express a complete musical statement on the drum set alone. Drawing from jazz, classical, & ethnic percussion styles from around the world, Terry Bozzio is “a storyteller,” able to weave a hypnotic spell over audiences and enthrall them with an eclectic experience filled with contrast, variety, intimacy, excitement, & passion.

Terry has had tremendous success with his last coast-to-coast North American tour, as well as his last two Terry Bozzio solo drum performance tours in Europe (2012 included his headline show at the Jazz Festival Frankfurt – the oldest jazz festival in the world – and 2013 which included sold out performances in Sweden, Germany, Eastern Europe, and France). Please note that this is not a bombastic 2 hour drum solo. This is MUSIC on drums, “an evening with Terry Bozzio.” In most of Bozzio’s works, he accompanies himself with bass lines while soloing over it melodically on the tuned toms. There is space, classical forms & structures, ambient electronic loops, and atmospheric percussion effects, as well as some exciting & fiery drumming that brings audiences to their feet!

“Terry Bozzio Composer Series” was released in Japan in the fall 2015! 59 Compositions, with 59 Paintings for each title on a 4 CD, 1 live performance/interview/drum setup DVD & Art Booklet in a Vinyl Sized Package! (On the Ward Records Label). For those of you who may have seen Terry on tour, the house music he played was only some of this material! Terry has been composing in & beyond all genres for several decades: Classical, Fusion, Electronic, Ambient, Rock & Jazz!

Terry just finished a sold out Tokyo show called “The History of Terry Bozzio”, w/ a Japanese All-Star Band, filmed for TV Broadcast and an upcoming DVD (Oct. release - Ward Records). He performed and sung tunes from his past recordings w/ Zappa, Beck, UK, Missing Persons, Bozzio Levin Stevens, Brecker Bros. & Billy Sheehan! Drum Legend Corky Laing Is Back On The Road!

NYC - The legendary drummer, Corky Laing, is back on the road with his first solo project since 1977. “Corky Laing plays Mountain” toured the UK in November 2015. Following an enthusiastic response from the UK audiences, he returns to Europe this spring. First up is a nine-day tour of Germany in February and in May he’ll be back in the UK. Corky is also locking in US dates starting with a package with Kofi Baker’s Cream Experience in Sag Harbor, NY in late February and with further dates for “Corky Laing plays Mountain” being scheduled for late May and early June.

After Mountain stopped touring in 2010, Corky has been busy with his one-man show, “Best Seat in the House” and the critically acclaimed “Playing God: The Rock Opera”. The Rock Opera has been performed in Basel, Switzerland, in Helsinki, Finland and last year it made its American debut with a sold out show at the Kaye Playhouse in the heart of Manhattan. This year the opera returns to Finland where, in addition to shows, it will be filmed for a video release.

Being back on the road with “Corky Laing plays Mountain” is a thrill for Corky. He loves playing the Mountain material the way it was originally written and says that behind the kit, in front of an audience, he feels like he is 18-year-old again. And from what the reviews say, the youthful enthusiasm is thoroughly reflected in the band’s sound and attitude.

Groundbreaking Percussionist From Electronic Pioneers KRAFTWERK Releases Anthology Of Recent Works!

Los Angeles, CA - As the electronic percussionist during Kraftwerk’s peak of creativity, Wolfgang Flür’s place among the pioneers of modern music is assured. Kraftwerk’s computerized rhythms and deceptively simple beats, which produced such classics as “Autobahn,” “Showroom Dummies,” “Trans-Europe Express,” and “The Model,” made them one of the most influential bands of the 20th century. But Flür’s influence extends even beyond his creative musical talents to include his technological gifts as exemplified by his co-inventing of the first ever electronic drum pad, alongside Kraftwerk founder Florian Schneider, which Flür put to good use both in Kraftwerk’s stage show as well as studio recordings. Now, a new collection of Flür’s solo recordings from the last decade is about to see release in the US on Cleopatra Records October 30.

The collection, entitled Eloquence, kicks off with the highly autobiographical track “I Was A Robot,” which hit #6 on the German club charts upon its initial release in 2004. Immediately following is a stunning quasi-sequel to the Kraftwerk classic “The Model” called “Cover Girl.” In contrast to the cold, calculating compositions of his former band, Flür’s solo work is densely layered and veers more toward the warmth of house music with the catchiness of techno. This collection also features a number of prominent guest producers including Nitzer Ebb’s Bon Harris and Meat Beat Manifesto’s Jack Dangers as well as Pizzicato Five vocalist Nomiya Maki. Kraftwerk fans and anyone looking for some superbly crafted electronic music will not want to miss this exciting release.

London, UK - Ian Danter is an incredibly talented multi- instrumentalist and songwriter who released his debut album "Prove You Wrong” to great critical acclaim in 2013 – he is also very well known as a sports broadcaster on talkSPORT Radio in the UK.
