Heavy Metal Legends BAD NEWS! Release 32nd Anniversary Box Set & more

The Comic Strip Presents...BAD NEWS!

VIM, DEN, COLIN and SPIDER are BAD NEWS!

The Comic Strip Presents... BAD NEWS! Four hairy muisos with a dream to be the next Motorhead. Sure they have musical differences – all great bands do. But with Colin's PA ,Vim's old transit van and the entire back line stacked on HP, what could possibly go wrong ?…. Chart success, adoring fans and excess all areas, it can only be GOOD News surely! Then the unexpected happens.

BAD NEWS get picked by Channel 4 television for a fly on the wall documentary about a metal band's quest to make the big time. The film when first broadcast caused immediate outrage not just with metal fans who thought it was “far too heavy”, but the band got condemned by the music press who declared them: “the worst thing since Shawaddywaddy” or as one smart arse critic wrote “this isn't Metal, it's Heavy Lead”.

The documentary ends with the band in a sprawling fist fight and falling apart as they head for obscurity. That riveting film of BAD NEWS is what you actually have now in your grubby weed stained fingers …yeah? But it wasn't all bad news. . Sharkey Mcyntyre the scrap dealer turned pop promoter using the old dictum that “there's no such thing as bad news” immediately invited the band to play at the Monsters of Rock festival at Castle Donnington along with some of their heroes including Motorhead.

Suddenly there's a part two of the Bad News story and when EMI decide to sign the band. Channel 4 also embark on a second film MORE BAD NEWS (even longer than the first!) charting their rise to fame as they record two albums with the legendary axe man Brian May who actually lets them murder the Queen classic “Bohemian Rhapsody” - it's all laid out here in front of you – followed by a national tour ending with a final live concert at Hammersmith Odeon (also included).

SO! You got your BAD NEWS t-shirt and patch, your picture filled tour programme - Now get yourself a greasy hot dog a plastic pint of lager; roll yourself a huge spliff and sit back and enjoy…. Are you ready?! Coz here they come! “The worst band in the world” On Film! On CD! On Bootleg! And live here on stage Ladies and Gentlemen!

BAAAAAAAD NEWS!

For more information: http://www.pledgemusic.com/badnews

Both CD reissues of “Bad News” and “Bootleg” are expanded with extra tracks. In the case of “Bootleg” it has a bonus CD and features the bands performance at Castle Donnington and Hammersmith Odeon.

This is the first in series of deluxe box sets for all the Comic Strip Presents films.

Concert Review: Judas Priest and Deep Purple Co-Headline at Bethel Woods Performing Arts Center

Judas Priest and Deep Purple Co-Headline at Bethel Woods Performing Arts Center
Opening Act Temperance Movement

Bethel Woods New York
September 2, 2018

Thousands of people made the trek to the mountains in Bethel Woods NY to see a triple header rock concert. It was one of those nights you would never forget. Deep Purple, whom I never saw live, Judas Priest and a relatively new band on the scene, Temperance Movement, would entertain for over 3 hours.

It was a long ride for us but well worth the trip by the time we got back home in the wee hours of the morning. This would be the fourth time I would see Judas Priest. I am also aware that Deep Purple is likely on their last tour and recorded their last studio album From Here To Infinite. This placed some urgency on the event for me personally. I was there to cover Judas Priest so everything else was icing on the cake.

I have to say that the venue at Bethel Woods, which sits directly across the field where Woodstock was held, is the most beautiful venue I have ever been to. I have been to a few in my day and this place is so scenic and peaceful, well not for long though. There is a little stream that runs alongside the path to the stage and a beautiful water fountain as well.  There are all kinds of food and drink vendors and some very interesting booths for memorabilia of the site and of course the swag booths to give every fan a chance to buy something from the event. I picked up a signed CD from The Temperance Movement. It is a fantastic new album titled A Deeper Cut.

So, we just made it there before the concert started and had to walk quite a way from where we parked, which would later prove to work to our advantage when leaving.  My son and I ran to our seats to catch The Temperance Movement’s opening song.

The Temperance Movement are a British blues rock band formed in 2011 by Phil Campbell and guitarists Luke Potashnick and Paul Sayer. The rhythm section consists of bassist Nick Fyffe and drummer Damon Wilson. This was a pleasant surprise to have them open for the two rock heavyweights as I have appreciated their recorded output since their inception. They really came on strong and maintained the energy level with some great playing. The lead singer is a little dynamo, jumping all over and waving his arms. I think he must have watched Jagger on stage a bit before he took the stage himself and I can hear the influence of the Rolling Stones in their sound. They had a short stay but they really made the best of every moment and think left a lasting impression on an audience that was likely unfamiliar to them.

Faulkner and Halford
Judas Priest was up next and they started things off with the title track of their new album Firepower. Rob Halford is now sporting his completely white beard and looking like the elder rocker but sounding strong as ever. Every time I see this band I am simply amazed how Halford keeps his pipes in such good shape and the range and screams he still commands are awesome.

Ritchie Faulkner is now the veteran guitar player of the band. He trades licks with Andy Sneap who fills in now for Glen Tipton. Tipton was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. I was very saddened to hear this news.  It seemed strange not seeing Glen on stage with his red leather pants and guitar blazing away. Faulkner certainly has reached another level as a guitar player and he has risen to the occasion taking over a lion’s share of the lead runs.

Halford and Sneap
So as Priest made their way through their set list I realized that this was the first time I had felt the sheer power of their set so up close. We had some great seats. When I would sit down for a few minutes I could feel the bass drum hammering away at my chest. It really was an amazing feeling. They were very loud but that is the only way to experience a Priest concert with the decibel level pinning in the red. If it hurts the eardrums well that will eventually wear off and you will be so glad you went again.

Then came rock legends Deep Purple. Ian Gillan (vocals), Ian Paice (drums), Roger Glover (bass), Steve Morse (guitar) and Don Airey (keys) are a solid veteran unit that is very comfortable on stage and in the studio.
Ian Gillan has naturally lost some range with his voice; however, he is very distinctive and he gets the numbers across quite well. Some of the fan favorites were covered like “Highway Star,” “Space Truckin,” “Lazy” and of course “Smoke on the Water” and the incredible oldie “Hush.”

Deep Purple Bass Player Roger Glover
Deep Purple can still be a force to be reckoned with onstage and if they were not I am sure they would not be sharing a bill with the metal legends Judas Priest. There is likely a mutual respect there between the two bands. I have to give the nod to Steve Morse for still playing magnificently even though he has some wrist issues and has to wear a brace. I know the feeling and really appreciate his efforts to keep playing all of that great music.

What an amazing night and I was there. What an honor and privilege it was to attend such an event and have the opportunity to provide some coverage to perspective concert goers.

My final thought is if this show is coming to a town near you I highly recommend your attendance as this may be your last chance to see these bands play together!

Video Stream- Ghost-Rats

Ghost has a new album out titled Prequelle. I am betting this is their best yet after hearing several cuts today. This track is called "Rats." It looks like Papa Emeritus has new character and look to introduce as well.

Ghost is a very visual and theatrical band, they are quite entertaining. Beware, they are not for the faint of heart, but keep in mind this is an act. I can guarantee one thing, if you love metal, this band will quickly become one of your favorites.

Melodic Rock Band Odin's Court Releases Sixth Studio Album Turtles All The Way Down: Vol II

Progressive Rock and Metal for fans of Pink Floyd, Dream Theater, Devin Townsend, Porcupine Tree, HIM, Iron Maiden, Journey, and Queen

Baltimore, MD, USA based progressive rock and metal band Odin’s Court are excited to announce Turtles All the Way Down: Vol. II is available as of 2018 January 5 through Melodic Revolution Records!

Turtles All the Way Down: Vol II is a continuation of Odin’s Court’s 2013 concept album Turtles All the Way Down. Turtles All the Way Down explores deep issues about mankind’s understanding of the universe, the individual, and how each new discovery may challenge what we think we understand about our surroundings.

Brookins comments on the latest release: “This album takes it up a notch from where Dimetrius, Rick, and I left off with the previous album. I think Turtles II has our best material and production yet. I know artists often say these types of things when talking about a new release, but I think Gary Raub’s drum style adds a nice vibe to the sound we previously established. We also went for some ‘epic’ sounding choruses on this one with layered choirs, which are nicely supplemented by the beautiful voice of Michelle Loose Schrotz (of mid-Atlantic based band Brave). I think this album also has a big, ambient, and dense sound, but even with that big sound, we still maintain focus on ‘the song’ because that’s what it’s all about – the messages and emotions that music attempts to deliver.”

The new album features 8 tracks of melodic hard rock, prog, and metal, including an epic piece that is over 20 minutes long with full orchestration.

Track Listing:
 1. A Brief History of Time
 2. Will I See you Again?
 3. Unmoved Mover
 4. Killing Curiosity
 5. Event Horizon
 6. Infinite Regression
 7. The Burning Tides of Time
 8. My Final Journey

New Book on Legendary Proto-Metal Power Trio BANG "The BANG Story: From the Basement to the Bright Lights" Now Available!

“The BANG Story: From the Basement to the Bright Lights” by Lawrence Knorr, Frank Ferrara, Tony Diorio, and Frank Gilcken

Often called America's answer to Black Sabbath, one of the most unsung bands in the history of US hard rock music, BANG, is back with a new biography “The BANG Story: From the Basement to the Bright Lights”! With the heaviness of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, coupled with the groove of Grand Funk Railroad, BANG released three critically acclaimed albums on Capitol Records in the early 1970s before disappearing for a number of years. 2017 marks the 45th anniversary of BANG's critically acclaimed debut album and the band is celebrating with the release of their new book! “The BANG Story: From the Basement to the Bright Lights” was written by Lawrence Knorr, Frank Ferrara, Tony Diorio, and Frank Gilcken.

In the summer of 1971, BANG, a trio from the Philadelphia area, decided to take a road trip to Florida to try their fortune. While buying some rolling papers in the Sunshine State, they learned about a Small Faces and Deep Purple concert nearby in Orlando. They showed up at the venue and brazenly declared they were ready to go on stage. The concert organizer asked them to set up and play for him. After a couple songs, he told them they were opening for Rod Stewart and Small Faces. Before they knew it, BANG was playing with Bachman Turner Overdrive, Deep Purple, Three Dog Night, Fleetwood Mac, Ike and Tina Turner, The Doobie Brothers, and even Black Sabbath. Capitol Records signed them, and three LPs were released. Join Frank Ferrara, Tony Diorio, and Frankie Gilcken, as they recall their rapid rise to fame, playing with numerous Rock and Roll Hall of Famers.

The 1971 self-titled debut album “BANG” is considered an important forerunner to the early Doom Metal genre. Undoubtedly one of America's heaviest 'proto-metal' bands from the period, BANG also had a strong sense of melodic power. The band's versatility and songwriting skills are second to none. Highly regarded as a cult act by many for years, it’s now time for this truly amazing rock band to be enjoyed by a new audience worldwide!

Excerpts from the book:

“Those were the days when everything was experimental,” said Karl Richardson, the engineer. “We were looking for something more reverberant. We didn’t want BANG to sound like everybody else. In those days, records were more like paintings, than photographs. The studio was a palette, and we were always thinking about art—not just taking a picture.”

OZZY Cheesesteak anecdote … ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1, 1972, BANG was back in Fayetteville, North Carolina, to play with Black Sabbath, who was in the midst of their Master of Reality Tour. Wild Turkey was to open this evening, followed by the boys from Philly. That afternoon, the band was hanging out with Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath. They offered to introduce them to cheesesteaks, having discovered a sandwich shop in town that was attempting to replicate their favorite Philadelphia cuisine. “I’ve never had a bloody cheesesteak,” admitted Ozzy. And so BANG introduced the Prince of Darkness to the delicacy. After chomping on a few bites, he asked, “I have another question for you. What do the fans mean when they are making the “V” signs with their fingers? For our Churchill, it meant victory.” “To them it means one of two things,” answered Frankie. “It either means peace or boogie.” After that, Ozzy would often be seen on stage flashing dual V-signs to all of his audiences, as captured on the cover of their next album Vol. 4.

London - The eagerly awaited debut album from Burnt Out Wreck featuring ex-Heavy Pettin's Gary Moat is now available! “Swallow” is a huge slice of full on, punchy classic hard rock with guitar riffs galore! Released via Cherry Red Records, this album is every bit as good as you would expect from one of Scotland's original rock n rollers, Gary Moat!

Says Gary, “I went in to the studio to record a set of songs. Before I knew it, 'Swallow' had been created, and now here it is. I thoroughly enjoyed being in the studio but it was never my intention to become a recording artist again but here I am. It is crazy but I'm loving it. The album is a culmination of all my influences. It has been 30 years in the making and it seems it's being received very well everywhere...which is fantastic.”

Gary has a colorful history as the drummer and main songwriter for metal legends Heavy Pettin'. The band were signed to Polydor and Warner Chappell in 1983 with help from Def Leppard's manager Peter Mensch. They toured extensively until 1988 with Kiss, Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake, Ratt, Motley Crue, Saxon, Accept and Magnum amongst others, as well as headlining their own tours. They recorded three albums with different producers: Brian May, Mark Dearnley and Adrian Lee/Tony Taverner. Heavy Pettin' also played the likes of Reading Festival, Loreley and other major festivals, as well as recording The Friday Rock Show for Tommy Vance & Tony Wilson.

Gary created Burnt Out Wreck in the summer of 2016. After penning songs for an album, he ventured into the studio under the watchful eye of acclaimed sound engineer Steve Rispin (Asia), and with Gary's determination to create good time classic rock, “Swallow” began to take shape. For Burnt Out Wreck, Gary has traded the drum stool for the microphone. He has his own imitable style, and is frequently compared to Bon Scott and Marc Storace.

Burnt Out Wreck's “Swallow”  is co-produced by Gary Moat and Steve Rispin (Asia, Inglorious), mastered by Pete Maher (U2, The Killers, Jack White, Rolling Stones etc).

Featured Album Stream: Metallica-Hardwired...To Self-Destruct

Metallica has made a strong return reclaiming their throne as the kings of heavy metal with a double album set Hardwired...To Self-Destruct. It has been a frequent playlist favorite for me lately. This is their best since the black album! Welcome back boys.

Check out the Spotify stream and the video of the making of one of the great tracks from the album!

Metal heads rise!

FROM HELL Joins Evil Over Europe Tour with Double Headliners POSSESSED and BELPHEGOR!

FROM HELL is pleased to announce that the band has joined the Evil Over Europe Tour with double headliners POSSESSED and BELPHEGOR this December 2016. This is going to be one of the most extreme tours of the year and this will be FROM HELL’s first tour in Europe. FROM HELL brings their own brand of horror metal to Europe that is an amalgam of death metal, thrash metal and black metal. The band’s music is one long horror story from beginning to end and the band will be playing an excerpt of their horror story on this tour. Main support for the tour will be ABSU, black metal from Dallas, Texas. Also on the bill will be Cold Raven and Sariola. FROM HELL’s front man, Sinn, says the band’s music is influenced by the great King Diamond and musically by bands such as Death and At the Gates. On this tour will be bass player, Stephen Goodwin, of Viscious Rumors who is temporarily replacing Damien Sisson who is on tour with Death Angel and on lead guitar will be Justin Sakogawa of Hatriot, temporarily replacing Claudeous Creamer, who was tapped by POSSESSED to play lead guitar on this tour.

This tour will be the last set of shows supporting FROM HELL’s debut release Ascent From Hell. When the band returns from the tour, they will go into the studio to begin tracking new songs for the next FROM HELL horror album, tentatively entitled Rats & Ravens!
