The God Of Hellfire ARTHUR BROWN Invites You To His MONSTER’S BALL, Releases New Single LUCIFER SAM With DEEP PURPLE’S IAN PAICE & STEVE HILLAGE!

Features performances by James Williamson, Ian Paice, Mark Stein, Nik Turner, Shuggie Otis & More

Los Angeles, CA – Fans of dark and ghoulish rock & roll are all cordially invited to attend what is sure to be the biggest party of this year’s Halloween season, Monster’s Ball, the new album from the one and only God Of Hellfire and theatrical rock visionary, Arthur Brown! For his latest macabre-themed masterpiece, Brown is joined by a murderer's row of talented co-conspirators including the album’s producers Alan Davey, who also co-wrote several of the songs, and Fernando Perdomo, all of whom have helped Brown craft one of the most energetic and thrilling albums of his long and distinguished career. From The Stooges’ guitarist James Williamson, who brings the heat on a new version of Brown’s iconic 1968 hit “Fire” to the killer collaboration with Vanilla Fudge's Mark Stein on “Zombie Yelp,” Monster’s Ball promises to be one hell of a good time!

Today, Brown is proud to share another song from the album, the psychedelic opener to the album “Lucifer Sam,” penned by none other than Syd Barrett and featuring ripping performances by Gong guitarist Steve Hillage and Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice. Brown had this to say about the song, “As a prelude to the album launch on October 21st here’s a mysterious track by the enigmatic Syd Barrett. Fernando Perdomo’s bold production, the song’s adventurous structure, and the input of Steve Hillage and Ian Paice make this a delight of spooky fun. Shadows flickered and felines howled as I sang this portrait - Happy Halloween!”

Cleopatra Records Issues Deluxe Collector’s Edition Of HAWKWIND Co-Founder NIK TURNER’s 1978 Album XITINTODAY!

Produced by GONG’s Steve Hillage

Los Angeles, CA - From ‘60s legends the Grateful Dead to Grammy winning flautist Paul Horn, industrial band Killing Joke, and Hawkwind co-founder Nik Turner, Egypt’s Great Pyramids have been a powerful source of inspiration for many musical adventurers over the years. Some, like Turner, have even gone so far as to record their instruments inside the ancient wonders, capturing the unique resonance of these mystical spaces and blending them with modern techniques and sensibilities to create a truly innovative work of art. Shortly after his abrupt departure from Hawkwind in the late ‘70s, Turner recorded nearly a half an hour’s worth of improvised flute melodies within the Egyptian pyramids, which he then used as the basis for his incredible 1978 experimental ambient masterpiece Xitintoday. The album, which is officially credited to Nik Turner’s Sphynx, is an adventurous, groundbreaking collaboration with several alums from prog rock legends Gong including Steve Hillage (who produced the album), Miquette Giraudy, Harry Williamson, Mike Howlett, Tim Blake and more.

For Turner, the album has a more personal meaning as he explains, “Xitintoday was a very necessary source of catharsis and healing for me, not only from being fired by my former band but also from the death of my father.”

Now this superb project is being reissued in a deluxe collector’s edition on gorgeous picture disc vinyl housed in a gatefold jacket with 16-page booklet insert that meticulously recreates the distinctive artwork of graphic design icon Barney Bubbles. The package also includes the entire album on CD with a special bonus track of Turner's raw 30-minute flute recording from deep within the pyramid.

Keyboard Legend Rick Wakeman To Release “Starship Trooper” Compilation Feat. Steve Hillage, Nik Turner, Steve Howe, William Shatner and Others!

Los Angeles – On April 15th Purple Pyramid records will be releasing an out of this world collection of extraordinary performances by legendary YES keyboardist Rick Wakeman! For more than four decades Rick Wakeman has established himself as a visionary showman without peer, the creator of some of the most extravagant performances, breathtaking soloing and imaginative passages ever preserved on record, or executed on stage.

Aptly titled “Starship Trooper”, this amazing collection contains 2 previously unreleased tracks including a powerful rendition of Tool's “Sober” plus several more brilliant cover songs of The Who, Pink Floyd, and The Doors including 5 never before heard versions! The compilation also includes performances by Gong’s Steve Hillage, Yes's Billy Sherwood, Steve Howe and Tony Kaye, William Shatner, Colin Moulding, Jerry Goodman, Nik Turner, Carmine Appice and more!

“Over the last few years I have performed on many tracks as a 'guest' but never before has anybody put some of the best of those I played on into a compilation. It's always challenging to be involved in tracks of other people's music and other people's arrangements as it often makes you think and play differently and certainly on many of these tracks I play in quite an unexpected way, but there again, much of my life has been pretty unexpected anyway!” - Rick Wakeman

The liner notes were written by modern rock scholar Dave Thompson, who says of Rick Wakeman, “This most personable of superstars has made inroads into the worlds of journalism, broadcasting and acting - professions which his eye for spectacle, story telling and stylishness might well have made inevitable all along. But he also happens to be among the most gifted, visionary and brilliant performers his chosen instruments have seen.”

Track List:
1. Sober
2. Are We To Believe
3. Random Acts (Revisited)
4. Dynamics Of Delirium
5. Love Reign O'er Me
6. Crime Of The Century
7. The Great Gig In The Sky
8. I'm Not in Love
9. Starship Trooper
10. Check Point Karma
11. Change
12. Nobody Home
13. Light My Fire

Guitar Legend Steve Hillage To Issue Unreleased Concert Recording "Live In Madison Square Garden 1977"

London, UK - Steve Hillage is one of the most idiosyncratic and instantly recognisable guitarists in the world. Associated with the Canterbury scene, he has worked in experimental domains since the late 1960s. Besides his critically acclaimed solo recordings, along with prog legends Gong, Steve has been a member of the ensembles Khan and System 7. And now, much to the excitement of Steve Hillage fans worldwide, Cleopatra Records will be releasing a vintage concert recording from 1977 of his band in concert at Madison Square Garden in NYC!

Says Steve, “This was a great performance from another fine period of my band in the late '70s. This was my first tour of the US – Gong never played there while I was in the band in the seventies. It wasn't my first visit to the US though – my first visit was in 1976 when I went to record 'L' at Todd Rundgren's studio, near Woodstock, New York. Madison Square Garden in New York is an iconic major venue, so it was a fantastic honor to play there! We were playing to audiences who mostly didn’t know our music too well, so we just let rip and went for it. The band was really firing!!!”

“Live In Madison Square Garden 1977” is culled from a crystal clear soundboard recording that captures Hillage at the height of his powers with performances from his second solo album “L”, including a psychedelic cover of Donovan's “Hurdy Gurdy Man” plus the epic length “Hurdy Gurdy Glissando,” “Lunar Musick Suite” and more! Also included are superb bonus studio tracks that feature exclusive versions of Hillage's recent recording collaborations with keyboard legend Rick Wakeman and world renowned actor William Shatner!

“Todd Rundgren came to the Madison Square Garden show,” Hillage remembers, “and I'm pretty sure he joined our sound engineer at the mixing desk and added some extra Harmonizer drum effects to 'It's All Too Much'. It certainly sounds like that on the recording! I was waiting for a good moment to release this US gig recording in the US on an American label. Cleopatra, with whom I’ve had a long relationship, asked me if I had any good available archive material and it immediately struck me that this moment had arrived!”

Steve Hillage first came to prominence as a member of the multi-national rock band Gong. Steve appeared on successful albums such as 'Angels Egg', 'You' and his final album with the band 'Shamal'. Steve recorded his first solo album in 1975 entitled 'Fish Rising'. This album was recorded whilst still a member of Gong. Shortly after however, Steve and his partner Miquette Giraudy left Gong embarking on a career that continues to this day under the name System 7.

In 1976 Steve recorded the album 'L', which was produced by Todd Rundgren. The album was a huge success and Steve subsequently formed the first Steve Hillage Band, which included former Jethro Tull drummer Clive Bunker and future Camel bassist Colin Bass. The band made its live debut at the Hyde Park concert staged by Queen in September 1976. From 1976 to 1979, Steve Hillage released several critically acclaimed albums and toured the world.

Steve Hillage's “Live In Madison Square Garden 1977” is available on CD in a mini-LP sleeve and a special limited edition opaque orange vinyl pressing with full color insert and sleeve!

Progressive Rock Review: Steve Hillage-Rainbow 1977

Release Date: 23rd June 2014
Label:    Gonzo MultiMedia

Steve Hillage is a very well-known English musician, best known for his superb guitar work. He was closely associated with the Canterbury Scene (or Sound) which was a group of prog rock, avant-garde and jazz musicians based around Canterbury in the late 60’s/early 70’s. Steve has worked mainly in experimental domains since that time and besides solo recordings (14 albums), he has been a member of Gong, Khan and System 7, as well as being associated with Uriel (Arzachel), The Orb and Clearlight.

This latest release, Rainbow 77, would, one surmises, be the issue of a concert at the Rainbow Theater in London. Material appearing on the album has come from the solo releases, Fish Rising (1975) and L (1976) and the album that was just about released, Motivation Radio(1977). Despite a fair search across the web, there seems to be very little agreement about this particular release. There were 2 Steve Hillage concerts in the Rainbow during 1977, apparently March and November. Consensus seems to suggest that this is a recording of the later concert, and Steve does announce the musicians on stage with him during the show, which confirms the November setting.

The musicians involved in Rainbow 77 are Steve Hillage (guitar, synths and vocals), Miquette Giraudy (synths, sequencers, bells and vocals), Joe Blocker (drums and backing vocals) and Curtis Robertson (bass).
Rainbow 77is an 11 track release with a total playing time around 74 minutes. The shortest track on the album is track 6, “The Salmon Song” at 3:43 minutes and “Searching for the Spark” track 10 is the longest at over 15 minutes. (15:15)

“Octave Doctors” (4:07) opens Rainbow 77 and is greeted by the sound of a very enthusiastic audience. Some excellent guitar and keyboard carry the instrumental theme along with some really solid foundation work by Joe (drums) and Curtis (bass). The link into track 2, “It’s All Too Much” (6:17) is seamless and the keyboards power out the melody closely followed by the guitar. This is a very simple catchy track with the characteristic voice of Steve in fine form. Some very tasty guitar just prior to the 2 minute point really fires the musicians along and the track is simply a gem.

“Light In The Sky” (4:22) has a thumping drum intro into some heavy guitar riffing before the vocals edge into the proceedings. There is some interesting interplay between the voices of Steve and Miquette. A short, but sweet, track which maintains the momentum with again that superb guitar from Steve and almost UFO sounds effects from Miquette.

“Radio” (7:31) is a very different styled track with some natural (countryside?) noises mixed in behind an acoustic guitar. There seems to be an underlying effect of trying to emulate the constant changing of the frequency of a radio, before the track settles down after around 2:30 minutes. This is a more experimental track which draws the listener in, the longer it evolves. This is then followed by handful of tracks that are very clearly both audience (and band) favorites, ”Electrick Gypsies” (5:35), “The Salmon Song” (3:42) and “Solar Music Suite Part 2” (7:10).

“Motivation” (6:41) is a “ripper” of a track with stunning guitar that simply soars and pulls everything, and everyone, along with it. Following that track, the new sport of “Saucer Surfing” (8:14) shows that superb guitar work from Steve, in front of a thundering rhythm powerhouse.

The penultimate, and longest, track on offer is “Searching for the Spark” (15:15) and allows the band to evolve the style of music that Steve is associated with, long meandering guitar based music with some excellent keyboards/synths burbling away just under the surface, kept in check with the rhythmic “engine room” and the track is simply a joy to listen to. The final track, “Hurdy Gurdy Man” (5:04) is a stalwart of the Steve Hillage live shows and is certainly a very different prospect to the original, Donovan, single.

The excellent guitar playing, synths that burst in here and there, but burble away constantly and a superb drum and bass duo ensure that this is a very pleasing live album and easily remembered.

Rainbow 77is an excellent release and the sound quality is very high, always a potential downside with some live albums, but my one little bugbear with this release, is why? Much, if not all of this material is available on other live albums and although the tracks might vary slightly from one recording to another, I am not sure that it really justifies Rainbow 77’s release. While it might be an essential purchase for Steve Hillage followers, it might, however, also be an entrance into the music of Steve Hillage for those wishing to dip their toe into this style of music? The band deserves plaudits for this concert and the sheer electric atmosphere that seems to have been present is conveyed well across this recording. Give the album, Rainbow 77, a few listens and decide whether you want to add it to your collection or not.
