Swedish Prog Legends Kaipa DaCapo Feat. Guitar Icon Roine Stolt To Release First New Studio Album In 35 Years - “Dårskapens Monotoni”!

Sweden - Prog dreams do come true! Legendary '70s Swedish Prog ensemble Kaipa DaCapo featuring guitarist Roine Stolt will be releasing a new album “Dårskapens Monotoni” on October 10th on Foxtrot Records!

In the mid 70's the band Kaipa was one of the main acts on the Swedish music scene, alongside groups like Kebnekaise, Samla Mammas Manna, Hoola Bandoola, Bo Hansson, Made in Sweden. Four young men devoted all their time  to the band Kaipa, with regular touring and recordings between the years 1974-1978. Kaipa did many shows, over 100 each year and many live broadcasts on national radio and television. They recorded 3 albums for the DECCA label and were often compared to international contemporary giants of the genre, like GenesisYESPink Floyd and Focus.

Three of the original members have now re-united and play the music from the most popular albums from their 1970's catalogue, now together with two new younger members - trying to be faithful to the vibe and  sound and 70's style. Ingemar BergmanTomas Eriksson and Roine Stolt carry the  torch forward from the 70's - Roine, perhaps the most well know now within progressive circles - with recent success with his own bands “Transatlantic” & “The Flower Kings” - with almost one million albums sold. Lately also as a member of Steve Hackett’s touring band  and most notably on a brand new successful collaboration with Jon Anderson of YES - “Invention of Knowledge” - released June this year to thunderous reviews. The duo are working on a follow up to that album - with possible live shows of Anderson & Stolt Orchestra in 2017.

June 2016 saw Kaipa DaCapo record brand new material for the first time in more than 35 years. This is the first full length album with new Kaipa DaCapo music from these gentlemen - recorded in a state of the art studio in a very organic and old fashion way - 5 guys playing the music together in a recording studio.

Progressive Rock Review: Transatlantic-Kaleidoscope (Special Edition)

Progressive rock enthusiasts get to enjoy another epic journey of musical wonders from the talent laden band Transatlantic. The prog rock royalty of Neal Morse, Mike Portnoy, Roine Stolt and Pete Trewavas have done it again on their fourth slice of musical genius with Kaleidoscope.

I know the word epic is overused within this community however there is no other apt word to describe what they have accomplished yet again on this recording.

If you are going to purchase this album make it worth your while and get the special edition with the bonus CD and DVD, you will not be sorry. The “Making Of” is always so much fun to take in. Everything is done at Neal’s studio and it shows the listeners how the entire project is constructed from day one. The setting couldn’t by any more intimate as it brings you into Neal’s kitchen at lunch while the band members discuss the day’s events and their ideas for each track. This is a part of the Transatlantic releases I always look forward to. There is plenty to enjoy and laugh about as always so it is a welcome addition.

On to the meat and potatoes now…the opening track "Into The Blue" is a prog rock omnibus encompassing a 5 part suite taking up a lofty 25:11 of the first disc. It is a grand way to open the curtain for this amazing super group. The first part is “Overture (instrumental)” which leads you into “The Dreamer And The Healer” then on to “A New Beginning” to “Written In Your Heart” and finalized with “The Dreamer And The Healer (reprise). Every aspect of this band is here in this suite for your anxious ears to consume. The songs link together like Mother Nature and the food chain while ebbing and flowing like the tides of the oceans. It is all done in true classic prog fashion like their forefathers Yes.

What makes this machine work is their obvious chemistry, the undying love for all progressive music and lastly and most importantly, the multitude of talents every member has to offer. It is an all-inclusive display of those factors. This band’s respect for the music and from whence it came is written in their own signature sound. Their star shines so brightly with the first track then again comes out in many colors (indeed like a Kaleidoscope) on the fantastic cover songs on the bonus disc. Everyone gets their opportunity to contribute vocals and instrumentation and it all folds nicely into one whole entity to make Transatlantic a special kind of experience.

I like the fact that Mike is singing more all the time, he has so much energy and personality and his voice just lights up a room. His voice is very distinct and I for one like it. His choice of covering the Procol Harum classic “Conquistador” is well suited to his tone and approach. "Indiscipline (King Crimson cover)" is a superb prog classic done very well. With all of its twists and turns it was tailor made for this band to cover. As to be expected all of the instrumentation is exceptional and I think what makes it even more special for the band is that they really are all friends enjoying the process of creating. It becomes obvious while watching the video footage in the studio and around Neal’s home. As a fan and appreciative listener I feel like I became a part of this recording in a different way when I experienced their “process” as they went through it.

Now to close the curtain they do it again with another huge musical mountain climb to the zenith of prog rock with the title track “Kaleidoscope.” This one exceeds the first epic coming in at 31:53. Everything sandwiched in between is excellent as well. “Shine” is a deeply touching spiritual track that fits in Neal’s back pocket like a well-worn glove. If you look at the titles of the tracks they cover the range of emotions one can have during the course of a day. This music spurs on emotions within and that is the whole point right? They succeed in many ways from where this listener sits. The complexities of the music do not overshadow the human touch on this recording, you can feel the music every step of the way and that is the beauty and simplicity of it. Complex yet simple- complete opposites of the spectrum yet it does work out that way in spite of the differences between the two.

Everything about Transatlantic is unique, inspirational and musically solid. What they offer is musical perfection, prog rock nirvana and the complete musical experience. If you walk away from Kaleidoscope unsatisfied or unfulfilled you had better check the obituaries to make sure you are not listed. The members of this band are the keepers of the flame and the literal heartbeat of prog music today. It is highly recommended that you to listen to what they have to offer.

Transatlantic To Release New Studio Album Kaleidoscope on Jan 28, 2014 Announces World Tour Jan 31 - Mar 15, 2014

Cross Plains, TN - Good things come to those who wait. Transatlantic fans are accustomed to playing the waiting game, and their patience has been rewarded with the band's fourth official studio album, Kaleidoscope. Steeped in vibrant prog rock organics, it's a triumphant return to the band’s original creative style.

The beloved prog rock project featuring Neal Morse (ex-Spock's Beard), Mike Portnoy (The Winery Dogs, ex-Dream Theater), Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings) and Pete Trewavas (Marillion), Transatlantic's foundation was built in 1999 with the release of their debut album, SMPT:e, in 2000. A second studio album, Bridge Across Forever, solidified their position as prog’s definitive supergroup. It would be nine years before Transatlantic’s fans were rewarded with a new studio album: 2009’s The Whirlwind, the band’s most popular release to date. Following the subsequent tour, spawning two live DVDs, the band decided to record a new studio album as soon as they could.

"There was talk about a year ago about doing an album before we actually did it," reveals Morse. "I was feeling it for a while. Some of the music that ended up on my Momentum album (2012) seemed like good material for Transatlantic. Roine and my schedules have a little more space in them, and Pete and Mike's schedules finally aligned, so we were able to put this together. I'm just glad we got to do it again and I'm really happy with the way the album came out."

Morse, Portnoy, Stolt and Trewavas shared equally in the songwriting, with Portnoy ultimately sifting through the material and picking out what he felt was best. For the most part, the music that fans hear on Kaleidoscope (and all of their previous albums) was created for Transatlantic. There are, of course, exceptions. “I wrote the second song on Kaleidoscope, “Shine,” before my Momentum album came out," says Morse. "I thought about recording it for myself, but it just smelled of Transatlantic. I presented it with two other acoustic songs, and that’s the one the other guys chose, as well.”

The band convened at Neal’s studio in Tennessee; writing, arranging, and laying down the final drums and bass. Morse offers, “At this stage, we sketch out the house and build the foundation. Then Roine and I go off to our respective studios and do what we need to. We send those parts, including vocals, back and forth via the internet; but the writing is done together in Tennessee. We just go from the gut, and I think it's an amazing process of trusting each other. There's no shortage of ideas; it's more like which ideas do we want to use?"

As the fans have come to expect, Kaleidoscope is also available as a Special Edition featuring eight uniquely Transatlantic cover songs. "I don't know how it started," Morse says of the cover song tradition. "But we've done it for every album. It's a lot of fun because most of the time it's simpler music than what we're mainly involved with."

There are points during the journey through Kaleidoscope where the listener will be reminded of artists like Yes, early Genesis, and even Styx. But in the end, the album is distinctly Transatlantic before it can be compared to anyone else.

"I think that comes from the different ingredients," says Morse. "It's the four of us from all over the world—with our different backgrounds, cultures and musical history—that makes this band totally unique."

The band will embark on a six-week world tour January 31 – March 15, with an additional performance at the Sweden Rock festival June 4-7. They will be joined by Pain of Salvation’s Daniel Gildenlöw as a 5th touring member. The tour will include headlining the Progressive Nation At Sea 2014 Cruise,February 18-22, alongside 22 other leading prog acts including Adrian Belew Power Trio, Devin Townsend Project, King's X, Anathema and Spock’s Beard. The event will also feature a special performance of Yes material by Transatlantic with legendary singer Jon Anderson on vocals.

Review: The Flower Kings-Desolation Rose

Desolation Rose, the twelfth studio album from the Swedish progressive rock giants, The Flower Kings, didn’t have any time to gather dust once it landed on my desk for review, as it was very quickly into the disc drive and playing. Any release from this stellar bunch of musicians is avidly awaited by prog rock listeners across the globe. The band were formed back in 1994/1995 by Roine Stolt as the touring band to promote his solo album release, The Flower King, but have remained as a band since that point, although there have been side projects by various band members.

The style of music pioneered by The Flower Kings seems to draw strands in from many bands that were around, including, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Frank Zappa, Yes, ELP, King Crimson and Focus, but woven together in a manner that allowed them to stand out above many of their contemporaries. The music would be best classed as symphonic rock, marked with sudden sharp dynamic changes, polyrhythmic, heavy bass lines, superb vocal harmonies, intriguing lyrics, and certainly in the early days, extended track lengths.

The current line-up of The Flower Kings is, Roine Stolt (guitar, keyboards, bass, vocals), Hasse Froberg (guitars, vocals), Tomas Bodin (keyboards), Jonas Reingold (bass) and Felix Lehrmann (drums), with Roine, Hasse and Tomas original members from 1995. Jonas joined the band in 1999 and the newest recruit to the band is Felix, who took over the drum stool only last year.

While The Flower Kings have continued since being formed in 1995, there have been several side projects involving some of the band, such as, Roine being part of Kaipa, Transatlantic and Agents of Mercy, Hasse releasing a couple of albums as Hasse Froberg and the Musical Companion and Jonas has also been involved in Kaipa, The Tangent and his own band, Karmakanic.

Desolation Rose is a 10 track album with a total playing time around a minute short of the hour mark. The opening track, “Tower One,” is the longest track on the album at 13:37 minutes and the closing track, “Silent Graveyards,” is the shortest at only 2:52 minutes. Desolation Rose is an album based around a concept of an angel in a tower, viewing the despairing mess than man has made of everything.

The superb “Tower One” (13:37) opens the album and sets the listener up for a majestic journey through a further 9 tracks of unmistakable Flower Kings music. There is no preamble at the beginning of this track, as the powerful vocals appear in the opening seconds, followed by a passage involving gothic chanting behind a stunning guitar riff. Just over a minute into the track and it is motoring along on all cylinders with guitar, keyboards and that superb rhythm unit all in total harmony. Subtle changes and shifts in emphasis continue, which of course, are Flower King trademarks. Recurring melodic passages continue to imbed themselves in your mind as the track unfolds. Around the 8:30 minute mark the track is literally stripped bare to allow a superb lead guitar passage which then morphs quickly into a typical rock style setting with very forceful vocals, before slipping back into that recurring theme. The listener is certainly taken on a whirlwind of a journey, a rollercoaster of a ride, with fast passages, slow passages, sweeps to one side and then the other, but at the end, an amazing feeling of satisfaction. This is an amazing start to the album and demands that you listen to what follows.

The following track, “Sleeping Bones” (4:17), has more of a feeling of melancholy attached to it, with some stunning, if subdued, playing and vocals that shift from “normal” singing to storytelling narrative style. There is another change of tack on the title track, “Desolation Rose” (4:00), while still in the area of melancholia, becomes almost grandiose with beautiful piano and sweeping vocals before entering into a majestic keyboard passage. “White Tuxedos” (6:31) shows yet another side of the band with simple instrumentation, but powerful, hard-hitting lyrics including bits of narrative from speeches to intensify the emotion. “The Resurrected Judas” (8:24) hints at “classic” retro prog and “Silent Masses” (6:17) is verging on the upbeat. Of the four remaining tracks, both “Last Carnivore” (4:22) and “Dark Fascist Skies” (6:05) take the listener back into the darker side of the music, before the mood lightens with “Blood of Eden” (3:12) prior to the finale, “Silent Graveyards” (2:52), which seems to suggest spiraling into an abyss.

Although perhaps a rather somber concept, this album is a resounding success for The Flower Kings, showcasing all the trademark styles that only The Flower Kings possess and gets both the “One to Buy” and “The Experience will last Forever” stickers on the cover. An album that may need a few listens to fully appreciate, but then the point is reached where the mind simply says “Wow!”

5/5 STARS
