Joe O’Donnell: Channelling His Ancestors To Reclaim St. Patrick’s Day With His Blend of Indo-Celtic Music

"Joe O'Donnell is one of the finest violinists playing in the Celtic tradition" - Living Tradition

As a living descendent of the people who brought St. Patrick to Ireland, world music composer and violinist Joe O’Donnell is looking to bring the day of the Patron Saint back to its roots with his unique brand of Indo-Celtic rock.

Known as the ‘Princes of Donegal’, the O’Donnell family are closely related in lineage to Niall of the Nine Hostages, a High King of Ireland who brought St. Patrick back as a slave from a raid on Wales. Consequently, Joe’s Irish heritage goes back a long way and this is something he feels strongly about now that commercialism has overtaken St. Patrick’s Day with the misguiding, yet typical image of drunkenness and over-indulgence.  Joe feels that without losing the humour, there should be more emphasis on the historical roots and he plans to combat this with his one-of-a-kind style of folk inspired music.
Joe was keen to note that "St.Patrick, with his Egyptian hat and Graeco-Egyptian crozier, became the adopted Father of the Irish Nation. The celebration of that event on St. Patrick's Day used to embody the spirit of Irish creativity and culture. We need to bring some of that back to redress the balance."
Also, 2017 marks the 40th anniversary of Joe’s stunning concept album Gaodhal’s Vision, which tells the story of the Milesian people leaving Egypt and setting out for the island, foretold to them by Moses, called Eire (Ireland). The album displays Joe’s fascination with the esoteric and celebrates the origins of the Celts and many distinctive aspects of their famed culture.
As well as Joe, the album featured some highly talented musicians of the day including virtuoso guitarist, Rory Gallagher, with whom Joe enjoyed a warm musical friendship. As a result, the album was met with critical acclaim, partly due to Rory’s involvement, but also because of the quality musicianship and innovative compositions of O’Donnell himself.
To celebrate the anniversary, Joe will be performing Gaodhal’s Vision in its entirety with his band Shkayla (Gaelic for ‘stories’) on 31st March and 1st April at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry. The band will be joined by guest musicians as well as Indian fusion and Irish dancers. The performance will also be accompanied by narration, visual projections and Rory Gallagher’s original solos, synced with the live show, making for a multi-sensual, multi-media experience.
Joe was classically trained but from his early experience working in rock bands, he quickly grasped the affinity between Celtic modal and Indian Music, and now his band Shkayla bring together aspects of these, mixed with jazz, rock and classical orchestral styles. Shkayla generate great energy and excitement through their music, channelling the sensitivity and delicacy needed to keep Celtic music faithful to its roots.
The 40th Anniversary Special Edition of Gaodhal’s Vision is set for release 28th April 2017.

Pittsburgh Rockers Big Atlantic Drop Their Long Awaited Debut CD and Video Featuring the Single “Verdict”

Pittsburgh, PA-November, 13, 2012- Big Atlantic, a high energy band, with a name that is quickly becoming synonymous with some of rock’s greatest acts, has recently released their long awaited self-titled full length CD featuring the single “Verdict.

The album brings out the very best in this emerging rock act with its innovative and creative writing style, demonstrating a unique flare rarely heard in today’s rock music scene. Although every song on the album is extremely strong in its own way, the featured single, “Verdict” with its obvious strong hooks accompanied by the melodic riffs is, without question, is the stand out track on this recording. The song just brings it home on every turn. While each band member may have his own personal favorite, there are so many strong songs on this album that it was very difficult to decide which one was the strongest. You could play this record for ten different fans and get ten different opinions.

The energetic CD was produced by formidable record producer Rob Freeman. The band was also involved in the production. Blood, sweat, and sometimes tears went into this effort recorded at multiple studios; JKG studios in Pittsburgh and the Pilot Studio in Boonton New Jersey. The mastering took place at Turtle Tone Studios in New York City. When it was all said and done, the result was an astounding full length record.

Four rock steady musicians round out the quartet that is Big Atlantic. With Lee Caruso’s powerful red hot lead vocals and searing guitar riffs, Benjamin Hull’s syncopated bass groves, Tom Gascon’s dynamic drum beats and Jim Zamerski’s mesmerizing keys and guitar; Big Atlantic is proving to be a formidable force in the rock world.

Aside from great creative songwriting, an exciting live performance is probably one of the foremost trademarks of this high energy original progressive/alternative rock band. Their contagious spirit and obvious on-stage motivation is what sets them apart from all others. Although Big Atlantic is yet to share the stage with any high profile national acts, they are on their way, and are in the process of setting up a regional and national touring schedule. When asked what emotions he wants the band’s audience and fans to feel after a Big Atlantic performance, Lee Caruso replies, “We want our fans to feel full of hope, passion, energy, and motivation, giving them the confidence to take on the challenges they may face while chasing the dreams they long for.”

Big Atlantic’s new release is available at their official website and on iTunes. For more information on this up and coming rock outfit, to view the official video for “Verdict”, and to purchase the new CD, you can visit the band’s website at www.www.bigatlantic.com.

Joan Osborne Releases “Pretty Little Stranger” On Vanguard Records

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Santa Monica, CA--November 20, 2006-- Premier vocalist and songwriter, Joan Osborne, released her Vanguard Records debut, “Pretty Little Stranger” on November 14th.

Recorded in Nashville and produced by Grammy winner, Steve Buckingham, “Pretty Little Stranger” highlights the soulful sound of Joan Osborne with elements of country blues and Americana. This 12 song collection features six original tunes written by Joan including the first single, “Who Divided”, “Shake That Devil”, “After Jane” and the title track and also compositions by Kris Kristofferson (“Please Don’t Tell Me How The Story Ends”), Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter (“Brokedown Palace”) and Patty Griffin (“What You Are”).

Joan stated, “I would call this my version of a country record -- some of it very traditional, some less so. It tells feelings and stories in very simple language, and I wanted to focus on that simple way of communicating, rather than be flowery and poetic. I needed to get down to the bare bones and I feel like we did a good job of doing that.”

“Pretty Little Stranger” features some of music’s finest performers lending their talents including Vince Gill on “Time Won’t Tell,” Alison Krauss, “Holy Waters”, Sonny Landreth playing slide guitar on “Dead Roses” and Rodney Crowell providing harmony vocals on his own “When The Blue Hour Comes.”

Joan Osborne had one of the biggest releases of the mid-90’s with “Relish” and participated in the historic and successful Lilith Fair Tour. She has worked with a myriad of artists like Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, The Chieftains and Bonnie Raitt. She toured with The Dead in the summer of 2004 and recently finished a tour with Phil Lesh & Friends.
