Power Pop Icon MATTHEW SWEET Leads A Cast Of All-Stars And Legends On A Trip To Revisit THE BEATLES’ “ABBEY ROAD!”

Los Angeles, CA - It probably comes as no surprise that Athens GA indie rock icon Matthew Sweet has a fondness for The Beatles. From his 1986 debut album to his early ‘90s breakthrough, including the MTV smash hit “Girlfriend,” on through to his most recent albums, Sweet has pulled off the same kind of melodically driven, seemingly straightforward but stealthily complex songs that turned the Liverpudlian foursome into a worldwide phenomena and one of the most influential artists of all-time. Recently, Sweet was invited to participate in a truly remarkable revisitation of The Beatles’ incredible crowning glory, the brilliant Abbey Road, and the results couldn’t be more satisfying.

Sweet sings, plays guitar and even adds a little bass to a brand new version of Abbey Road’s punchiest blast of rock psychedelia, “Polythene Pam.” The fourth segment of the album’s magnificent Side B medley, “Pam” is the perfect showcase for Sweet’s deft interplay of rapid fire vocals and powerfully overdriven guitars. Assisting in the track’s creation is fellow singer/guitarist Jason Berk, who adds texture with his acoustic guitar, and Fernando Perdomo who supports Sweet’s guitar with some tasteful Hammond organ. Perhaps the only thing that can be said against the track is that, with a running time of 1:27, it leaves too soon. But then, that’s what the repeat button is for!

Cleopatra Records Unveils The Official Soundtrack To The Long-Awaited LYNYRD SKYNYRD Biopic, STREET SURVIVORS: The True Story of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash

Los Angeles, CA - After a long legal battle that made national headlines, STREET SURVIVORS: The True Story of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash, the full-length film that re-tells the story of the infamous 1977 plane crash that killed several members of Southern Rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd, will finally see the light of day as it is released to video-on-demand services. In conjunction with the film’s release, the official soundtrack will be hitting digital music platforms as well as retail stores on June 26th. Comprised of both selections of the film’s orchestral score as well as original music inspired by the band, the Street Survivors soundtrack offers a powerful testament to the enduring legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd and the historic significance of the events depicted in the film. Highlights include a superb rendition by blues rock legend Pat Travers of the classic J.J. Cale song “Call Me The Breeze,” which Skynyrd covered on their sophomore effort Second Helping (1974), as well as music performed by the sons of Skynyrd drummer, and survivor of the 1977 crash, Artimus Pyle. The soundtrack will be available on both CD and limited-edition vinyl in your choice of either blue or white!

Internationally Renowned Musician JOZEF VAN WISSEM Releases New Single In Partnership With CLEOPATRA RECORDS!

Los Angeles, CA - He’s been called the most well-known lute player in the western world, earning immense critical praise from Pitchfork, NY Times, NPR and others and collaborating with a wide range of accomplished artists including Zola Jesus, Jarboe of Swans, film director Jim Jarmusch, and many more. Now, Jozef Van Wissem has found a new partner in L.A.-based indie label Cleopatra Records, through which Van Wissem will release his newest single, a stunningly dark and gothic take on the ‘70s folk classic by America “Horse With No Name.” Van Wissem draws out all the underlying themes of isolation and mental instability with his hauntingly visceral take on the song, his deep baritone voice contrasting with the lightness of the lute, which adds a baroque quality to this American classic.

“Cleopatra Records asked me to do a yacht rock cover from a playlist. My natural inclination was to decline since the material was too happy and suntanned. But then I took a closer look at the lyrics of “ A Horse With No Name.” I think it fits perfectly with the times. Musically I wanted to strip it down so there’s only two chords played on a 12 string electric guitar and baroque lute with effects. But to me the song is more about the character lost in dystopia. Rock Legends ANGEL Signs New Record Deal With Cleopatra Records

Legendary rock band ANGEL has just signed a Record deal with Cleopatra Records and will start recording in April 2019. Original members Punky Meadows and Frank Dimino along with current member Danny Farrow have written 14 brand new songs for the album which they describe as very diverse ranging from songs that are very Melodic with real strong hooks to much heavier songs that contain great melodies and will have the classic Angel sound. This album will appeal to all ANGEL fans of every era and previous albums.

Cleopatra Records Presents A Collection Of Unreleased Late ‘90s Studio Recordings From AltRock Hitmakers, SPONGE!

Los Angeles, CA - Fresh from the critical and commercial success of their 1996 sophomore album Wax Ecstatic, Detroit hard rockers Sponge holed up in a small studio in their hometown to record what was to be their third as yet untitled album for Sony Records. The band, whose songwriting chops had been proved on the megahit singles “Plowed” and “Molly (16 Candles Down The Drain),” looked to founder and lead vocalist Vinnie Dombroski for a new batch of tunes, and Dombroski himself turned to his classic rock heroes like The Doors, The Who and Steppenwolf others for inspiration. The result was a raw blast of sonically devastating, guitar-oriented rock n’ roll. As the story goes, when legendary A&R rep John Kalodner stopped by the studio to sample what Sponge had been up to, he was not able to tolerate the sheer power of the sessions for long and had to beat a retreat!

For reasons known only to the band, these recordings were shelved and a new set of recordings were produced for Sponge’s 1999 album New Pop Sunday. But now those incredibly inspired studio sessions from 1997-1998 are available for the first time anywhere on the Cleopatra Records release Demoed In Detroit, providing a snapshot of where the band was 20 years ago while also offering a tantalizing taste of what might have been. In addition to the 13 original songs and 3 blistering cover tunes, this special collection includes 2 exclusive acoustic versions of the band’s hits “Plowed” and “Molly (16 Candles Down The Drain)” recorded especially for this compilation. Raw and powerful, Demoed In Detroit 1997-98 is an essential album for fans of Sponge and classic '90s alternative rock!

Cleopatra Entertainment Secures North American and UK Distribution Rights for Conny Plank Documentary Film

Los Angeles - Cleopatra Entertainment has secured the North American and UK distribution rights to the 2018 SXSW Film Festival Official Selection CONNY PLANK: The Potential Of Noise documentary.

The U.S. Theatrical Premier is slated for 6:00 PM on Friday, September 28th at the Arena Cinelounge Theater, 6464 Sunset Blvd. Lobby Level, Los Angeles, CA 90028 (323) 924-1644 and the film will run the entire week for a seven day engagement. In attendance at the premier will be the film’s Director and son of the late Conny Plank - Stephan Plank - and the film’s Berlin-based Producer Milena Fessman, who will participate in an exclusive Q&A session following the screening.

One of the greatest studio engineers and record producers of the 20th century, a world without Conny Plank’s influence on music is unfathomable. Instrumental in shaping the early sound of Kraftwerk, Plank would go on to work with legends such as Neu!, Cluster, DAF and Devo, eventually breaking through to the mainstream with the likes of Ultravox, The Eurythmics, and the legendary Scorpions. Conny’s son Stephan Plank, who co-directed this film with Reto Caduff, set out to discover the side of his father which he did not know, whilst at the same time, through interviews with such luminaries as Michael Rother, Daniel Miller and the late Holger Czukay, providing an appreciation of a man and his craft.

The 95 minute documentary also traces the history of Stephan’s father Conny through the viewpoint of the artists he worked with. It also examines the legacy the West German producer, sound engineer and musician left behind following his death at the age of 47. Ranging across progressive, avant garde, electronic and krautrock, Plank was also a regular collaborator with Cluster’s Dieter Moebius. Born Konrad Plank in Hütschenhausen in 1940, Conny died of cancer in 1987, leaving behind his wife, the actor Christa Fast, and son Stephan, then aged 13.

“I discovered his work in the early 80s when albums by Eurythmics or Ultravox, Les Ritas Mitsouko, Freur or by German new wave acts such as Ideal, Rheingold or DAF had the Conny Plank credit on the cover,” comments Reto Caduff via email. “Little did I know at that time of his earlier influence: that he brought Kraftwerk to the recording studio for the first time, that he was working with the band up to their “Autobahn” hit, and all his contribution to the krautrock genre and early electronic music. I only discovered really Neu! when the albums were reissued in the early 2000s. He really was a pioneer and his untimely death at 47 in 1987 only added to the legend.

“To me, the idea of co-directing the film made a lot of sense since Stephan could approach the artists whom he met as a kid in the studio (his home) differently than a regular documentary director. My hunch proved correct over and over again. Meeting the artists brought the memories and stories to a complete different level and enabled us to paint a very unique picture of this extraordinary artist behind the mixing desk. I also felt the timing was right since a lot of the people were still active.

“I hope we made a film that appeals to the fans who grew up with his music as much as to a younger generation interested in the genesis of electronic music,” he concludes.

Rock Legend TODD RUNDGREN Headlines Cleopatra Records First Ever SXSW Showcase!

Los Angeles, CA - One of the few remaining truly independent, privately owned record labels in existence today, L.A.-based Cleopatra Records has been championing underground music and outsider artists since its inception in 1992. Now, the label has teamed up with the biggest music festival dedicated to discovering and promoting new talent, SXSW, to announce the first ever official Cleopatra Records showcase. Headlining this special event is legendary songwriter/producer/guitarist, Todd Rundgren, an artist well known for pushing the boundaries of rock and pop with his distinctive flair for the eccentric and unusual. Todd’s newest album, White Knight, was released by Cleopatra Records in May of last year and features guest performances by Trent Reznor, Robyn, Joe Satriani & more.

In addition to Rundgren, the showcase will also bring together some of the label’s newest acts including dreamwave artist Pastel Ghost, whose first album Abyss has been reissued by Cleopatra and will also see their forthcoming album released later this year on the label. Alternative metal cabaret act from Mexico, Descartes A Kant, partnered with Cleopatra for their newest album Victims Of Love Propaganda in May of last year while L.A.’s own death rock architects, Egrets On Ergot, released Surfeit Of Germütlich last October. Electronic duo United Ghosts will issue their Cleopatra debut later this year while local Texas band Nite, consisting of twin brothers Kyle and Myles Mendez, saw their newest release Reborn launched in July of 2016. Each of these bands demonstrates the label’s fondness for uniquely creative acts and a commitment to supporting truly artist-driven music.

The official SXSW showcase for Cleopatra Records will be held at Elysium in downtown Austin, TX on March 15th. The first band will start at 8pm.

Italian Instrumental Ensemble Armonite Signs With Cleopatra Records!

Italy - Armonite, the instrumental rock collective led by composer Paolo Fosso and violinist Jacopo Bigi, signed with LA-based indie label Cleopatra Records for the release of their new album, And the Stars Above.

Armonite's instrumental music is perfectly in line with the spirit of the label, especially now that Cleopatra expanded in the movie industry.

With the film division Cleopatra Entertainment, the company has distributed, developed, and produced several films most of which have a strong horror and/or music component, including The Devil's Domain (starring Michael Madsen), The Black Room (starring Lin Shaye), Halloween Pussy Trap Kill! Kill! (featuring the voice of Dave Mustaine from Megadeth), The 27 Club (featuring Todd Rundgren), England Is Mine (Steven Morrissey bio-pic), A Street Cat Named Bob.

“Working with Cleopatra has been great,” says Fosso, “They're skilled and competent, I'm sure they will take Armonite to the next level. I've always been a great lover of movies and videogames, I was just moving forward to the composition of soundtrack music, so this collaboration comes right on cue.”

As with the previous album, And the Stars Above is an instrumental mix of electric violin, keyboards, bass, and drums with focus on the amazing and powerful electric violin, performed by Jacopo Bigi. Interpreting the music composed by keyboardist Paolo Fosso, Armonite also performs with bassists Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree) and Alberto Fiorani, along with drummers Corrado Bertonazzi, Emiliano Cava, and Jasper Barendregt.

The sound of the album is more oriented to soundtrack music with textures that feel very immediate. “We consume tons of music every day, we can't just stick to one genre”, says Fosso, “generally speaking, the album is rock, but with this idea of soundtrack music.”

Throughout the album, lingers a ghostly female voice, appearing and disappearing here and there before fully emerging in the band's first song with lyrics, “Clouds Collide”. The track tells the story of a girl between time and memories.

And the Stars Above is a journey through 12 tracks, starting with “The March of the Stars” inspired by Dante's Paradise and ending with “Ghosts”. The album also features two bonus tracks: a polyrhythmic piece for piano solo, “The Fire Dancer”, and the String Quartet “A Playful Day”.

“We're confident this is going to be a great release, with a rather peculiar view,” says Fosso, “The Sun is New Each Day had a heavy compact sound... And the Stars Above is groovy, with different vibes across a bunch of genres. There's something indie in this new sound that we've never explored before and it's kind of sexy for us!”

And the Stars Above is set to be released in late Spring.

French Experimentalist LE SEUL ÉLÉMENT Release Debut Album On Cleopatra Records Including A Haunting Collaboration With Label Mates BESTIAL MOUTHS!

Los Angeles, CA - On their debut album Demon, Le Seul Élément combines elements of piano, noise and darkwave, weaving textures and melodies with incredible skill. A rare solo project from a French artist who has mainly been involved in collaborative projects, Demon abounds with a sense of newly found artistic freedom, taking it’s time to build its tense sonic textures. Psychedelic/Hard Rock Review: Vanilla Fudge-Spirit of ‘67

Known for their rock renderings of popular songs and for being psychedelic rock maestros extraordinaire, Vanilla Fudge are still going strong some fifty years on. Original members Mark Stein (vocals, keyboards), Vince Martell (guitars), and Carmine Appice (drums) are joined by Pete Bremy (bass) on their new album, Spirit of ’67. Spirit of ’67 is just like it sounds, as Vanilla Fudge give their own take on some of the most popular and iconic songs from that year. Featuring songs made famous by The Doors, Marvin Gaye, The Who, and more, Spirit of ’67 is one wild and heavy ride through some remarkable songs from one of music’s most influential times.

The first musical treat on an album chock full of them is “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” Made famous by Marvin Gaye, Vanilla Fudge has put a nice psychedelic/blues rock spin on this classic song. I really dig the organ based sound running throughout the song, and there is a short and sweet guitar solo in there for good measure. Showing off a more hard rock sound, “The Letter” lures you with the solemn atmosphere created by the opening piano section. It makes for a powerful and an emotional start, but the song really gets going when the drums kick in and it is off to the races from there. With psychedelic rock sound, “I Can See for Miles” has nice hopeful air to it. The drums boom, the keyboards are phenomenal, and the guitars are killer, as they all lead to a magnificent climax.

Vanilla Fudge’s rendition of “Break on Through (To the Other Side)” is still pretty solid. Some might like the tempo change, and I have to admit that this version is still pretty rocking. At the end of the day, I still prefer The Doors’ version, but it is definitely the type of song that has grown on me the more that I listen to it. “The Tracks of My Tears” comes out crushing it before transiting to a more serene sound. “I’m a Believer” is a pretty sweet hard rock rendition of a classic pop rock song. “Gimme Some Lovin” is the real standout song on this album. It is nothing short of great. It has a great attitude, nice tempo, and the guitar just completely steals the show near the end of the song.

Nearing the end, the album keeps on going strong. “For What It’s Worth” is a rendition with a lot of power and energy behind it, making it one of the more memorable songs on the album. On “Ruby Tuesday,” they create a very harmonious rock sound that really hits its stride in the chorus. The penultimate song is one of the best. With an organ based sound on full, intense display, “Whiter Shade of Pale” is one great psychedelic/progressive rock song that is probably still ahead of its time. Capping the album off is the soulful “Let’s Pray for Peace.”

When you get right down to it, Vanilla Fudge’s Spirit of ‘67 is a triumphant album. This is a fantastic album that pays tribute to one of the greatest eras of music. Besides having a strong personal preference to the original versions of a song or two, this is top-quality music and is a real joy to listen to. If you are fan of Vanilla Fudge or rock music from the 1960s, then this is one album not to be passed over.
