Burnt Belief To Release 4th album, “Mutual Isolation” Featuring Acclaimed Guitarist Jon Durant and Bassist Colin Edwin (O.R.k./Twinscapes/ex-Porcupine Tree)

A study in universal understanding and global connection.

Burnt Belief have always been difficult to categorize, utilizing improvisation around strong thematic compositions, ambient textural atmospherics, subtle electronics combining elements of both progressive and jazz/rock blended with an intriguing undercurrent drawn from more ethnic traditions. Falling in the cracks of established genres, yet showcasing a remarkable ongoing core musical chemistry and defiantly its “own thing”, Burnt Belief is expansive yet instantly recognizable to those who know.

As with many other musical collaborations, the Covid19 pandemic rendered previously planned live and studio activity a total impossibility. However, a solid “distance working method” sharpened by three previous Burnt Belief albums has led to the remarkably natural and live sounding new album “Mutual Isolation”.

Despite working within customary musical territory, and with a similar modus operandi, “Mutual Isolation” departs from previous Burnt Belief releases as Colin Edwin elected to play double bass exclusively throughout the album’s 9 tracks, grounding the new material with an earthier, more natural resonance.

“Mutual Isolation” also allows freer than ever reign to Jon Durant’s trademark atmospheric “cloud guitar” approach, with his orchestrational guitar perspective meshing seamlessly around an increased application of his singular fretless guitar. The majority of Jon’s lead guitar parts were initially intended as “work in progress” guide performances but the finished album retains them unedited, which is a fitting tribute to Jon’s creative judgement and the spontaneity and rapidity of the album’s construction process.

As before, the core duo of Colin Edwin and Jon Durant is augmented by the addition of drummer Vinny Sabatino, who is equally at home in contrasting settings, from the free jazz tumult of “Where it All Began” to the precise rhythmic tensions of North African influenced “Divine Rascal”. Joining in on percussion duties is the highly in demand Swiss rhythm master Andi Pupato, who adds layers of meticulous yet unforced depth to several cuts. Far more than just a “guest soloist” is Estonian trumpet phenom Aleksei Saks, whose lucid tone and expressive phrasing perfectly fit the album’s overall widescreen cinematic canvas.

“Mutual Isolation” is arguably the most “live” sounding and spontaneous of Burnt Belief albums. Despite being recorded in total isolation, with minimal discussion, it also manifests clear evidence of the strong musical instincts and sensibilities of all the musicians involved.

Innovative Guitarist Jon Durant Releases New Solo Guitar Album "Alternate Landscapes"

Portland, OR - Following his acclaimed CD “Parting Is,” Jon Durant returns with a new solo album “Alternate Landscapes.” While both records are solo guitar, that’s also where the similarity ends.

Alternate Landscapes expands the idea of solo guitar to include MIDI guitar triggering old school synthesizer sequences and breathy wind instruments alongside Jon’s signature cloud guitar textures. The result is a strikingly original blend of highly unusual sounds and textures with the additional context of vintage synthesis all translated through the guitar. In addition, each of the four expansive tracks take the listener on an extended sonic journey through a multitude of aural landscapes.

Durant commented: “For my entire musical career, I’ve steadfastly refused to wear my influences on my sleeve. If I ever do something that sounds too much like someone else, I have always discarded it. This time I allowed myself to let, for example, my Tangerine Dream influence come to the fore, and decided to make a statement that offered homage without being too derivative.”

Continuing, Durant spoke of the very different nature of how he approached his guitar playing on “Alternate Landscapes” relative to his previous work: “I’ve always had a great love of melody, and on all my earlier work whether solo or with Burnt Belief my lead guitar was a centerpiece of what I did. The cloud guitar textures, for which I have gained a certain reputation, were usually placed in a context underneath a more obvious lead guitar melody. On Alternative Landscapes, however, I have almost eliminated the lead guitar voice in favor of letting the cloud guitar textures become the dominant theme.”

“Two of the songs, “Aragon” and “Ciel du Cheval” are solo guitar pieces, performed live in the studio with no overdubs. All the percussive elements on “Aragon are a loop played on guitar, over which I played my fretless guitar. “Ciel du Cheval” is solo cloud guitar piece all played on guitar with an E-Bow. Listeners might be reminded of the landmark work of Fripp & Eno in it’s scope and approach, though not necessarily in the sounds that emerge.”

The other two tracks involve the use of guitar synthesizer, and also include sounds of voices and trains recorded on an iPhone and played back through the pickups of a guitar and processed through Durant’s complex effects rig to render those sounds completely indistinguishable from where they began.

Guitarist Jon Durant brings a unique sense of texture and melody to his instrument. His distinctive “cloud guitar” soundscapes and engaging lead work have graced numerous CD recordings and film soundtracks. His 2018 release “Parting Is” was nominated for “Best Ambient Album” in the Zone Music Reporter awards. In 2019, several highly regarded recordings feature Jon’s work as a session player, including Stephan Thelen’s landmark “Fractal Guitar” on which Durant can be heard alongside David Torn and Marcus Reuter and many other innovative guitarists.

As executive producer of Alchemy Records, he produces recordings for internationally acclaimed artists in his small home studio. Alongside Durant's six solo albums and three Burnt Belief records (with Colin Edwin of Porcupine Tree), Alchemy has also released albums by artists Michael Manring, Gary Willis, Leni Stern/Wayne Krantz and others.

Innovative Guitarist Jon Durant Releases Solo Guitar Album "Parting Is"

Boston, MA - Following three acclaimed CDs with his group Burnt Belief, Jon Durant has returned with his first solo album since 2011's “Dance of the Shadow Planets.” Unlike his previous solo albums, however, “Parting Is” is a completely solo guitar album.

A deeply emotional and personal record, “Parting Is” takes the idea of a solo guitar album and transforms it into a stunning sonic landscape of texture and color. Many of the sounds on the album bear no relationship with traditional guitar, but there are no synthesizers employed at all. Everything is played by Jon Durant on guitars (with Durant also playing fretless bass on four pieces).

Durant commented: “In recent years, I have been spending a lot of time away from people and places I love very much. My two boys are out of the house, one graduated college and the other is a senior in college this year. We have a wonderful time when I get to see them, but then they go away and there is a bit of a pang as we part. Also, we have a second home on the other side of the country (Portland, OR) where I spend a fair bit of time, and is also where much of this album began. Frequently my wife will join me for a long weekend, and I will stay on for another week or so, and of course there's the sadness when we part. What is reflected in this music is the sweet sorrow that comes from this parting - recognizing that it's temporary but still longing for more time together.”

About the music, Durant stated: “On most days, one of the first things I do is grab a cup of tea or coffee, and begin to experiment with my guitar. The music that comes out is not done with any intention of becoming a composition, or a recording, but is rather more of a meditation. However, a friend heard a brief recording of one such piece and asked why I didn't record more of them. When I began to do so, I felt a pattern was emerging that might be worth exploring.

“Many pieces begin as loops that I would play a melodic lead over. I recorded several of these, then began to deconstruct the loops and record the various parts as separate components which could become less loop like and more dynamic and flowing. The track, 'Open Window' is a perfect example of how that played out.”

That track, “Open Window” also provides an opportunity to explore the unusual sound and textures that Durant creates. The primary guitar which began as a loop is an electric 12 string. From there, multiple electric 12 string parts were layered in a minimalistic way. The melodic guitar is a fretless electric guitar, and the low tones (which sound a bit like the old Moog Bass Pedals) are generated from the fretless guitar. Also, swirling around in the background are Jon's unique cloud guitar sounds, notes which hang in the air like clouds with no discernable beginnings or endings.

There are three solo cloud guitar pieces (“Clouds in Advance”, “Before the Rain Falls” and “Willamette Fog”) and two pieces which remained as a loop with lead guitar over the top. “The Room Where She Waits” is a loop of electric 12 String and the lead is fretless guitar. On “Evolve in Place”, the loop is an electric guitar with fretless guitar over the top.

Burnt Belief, Multifaceted Instrumental Band Feat. Porcupine Tree Member, To Release Third Installment of Trilogy: “Emergent”

Boston, MA - Inspired by the unspoken and hidden truths behind our daily reality, “Emergent” is the third in a trilogy of collaborative works by bassist Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree/Metallic Taste of Blood/O.R.k etc) and experimental US guitarist Jon Durant, under the working name Burnt Belief.

“Emergent” builds on the duo's previous work whilst still exploring the fundamental aspects that define Burnt Belief's sonic world, namely hypnotic rhythmic elements seamlessly blended with lush guitar led soundscapes and deep ambient atmospherics. “Emergent” also showcases the intense and unpredictable, yet satisfying guitar playing from Durant, who manages to tame elemental, skittish and frequently unsettling tones, by subtly wrapping them in layers of magnetic aura. Drumming throughout is Vinny Sabatino, who brings an inventive, muscular and precise beat to complement Colin Edwin's expansive and expressive fretless and upright basses.

Says Jon Durant, “One of the things that makes Burnt Belief unique in the world of instrumental progressive rock/fusion oriented musics is that we are not at all focused on displays of chops, but rather focus on trying to tell stories through the music. The title, 'Emergent', is a reference to the theory that consciousness is an emergent property of a functioning neurosystem. Colin and I both share a fascination with how the mind works and the ways that hidden processes and background information can subtly influence more obvious conscious thoughts without our being aware of it. Similarly, throughout the album, there are very subtle background elements that have in some way directly informed the bigger picture of the compositions.”

Colin Edwin adds, “With instrumental music, any meaning is obviously less explicit than when lyrics are present, but as we neared completion of the album, it became apparent to me that the majority of pieces on 'Emergent' have elements of unresolved tension or darker moments somewhere below the surface. Something I have noticed more and more is that there are many seemingly straightforward things which, on closer inspection, turn out to be really quite complex and insoluble, and I have started thinking of the album as bringing out the feeling of suddenly seeing more than you expected and having an expanded view coming into focus. This expanded view isn't necessarily optimistic however, so for me the image of an aggressive looking insect appearing inside a pretty looking flower on the cover is perfect.”

“Emergent” amply rewards repeated listens, unveiling it's layered coalescence of antithetical components gradually, such as the discordant conversational flexes between upright bass and electronic percussion during “Until the Stars Go Out”, or the measured rhythmic resolution during “Confidence of Ignorance”. The nine and half minute title track, which unfolds gradually and explores an unhurried yet palpable tension, is a thought provoking meditation on the unstoppable changes around us all, “Emergent” is a genre defying journey for intrepid listeners keen to explore new musical territories.

Packaged in a cardboard sleeve pack with a four page booklet.

Tracklisting:
1. The Bubble Bursts (6.02)
2. More Snow (6.10)
3. The Confidence of Ignorance (5.06)
4. Emergent (9.32)
5. Until the Stars Go Out (6.26)
6. Language of Movement (7.01)
7. Turning Torso (10.11)
8. Ghosts Aquatic (6.21)

Guitarist Jon Durant brings a unique sense of texture and melody to his instrument. His distinctive “cloud guitar” soundscapes and engaging lead work have graced numerous CD recordings and film soundtracks. As executive producer of Alchemy Records, he produces recordings for internationally acclaimed artists in his small home studio. Alongside Durant's records, Alchemy has released albums by artists Michael Manring, Gary Willis, Leni Stern/Wayne Krantz and others.

Colin Edwin is best known as founder member and bassist of the internationally successful , long time progressive rock favourites Porcupine Tree. Outside of Porcupine Tree, as well as solo work and various guest spots, Colin's unique and creative bass playing have lead him to collaborate frequently with like minded and inventive musicians, including (former Henry Cow) multi - instrumentalist and reed player Geoff Leigh (as Ex-Wise Heads), fellow bassist Lorenzo Feliciati in the critically acclaimed duo Twinscapes, and most recently Endless Tapes with drummer Alessandro Pedretti. Colin is also a member of the intense and genre defying band Metallic Taste of Blood, with two albums to date on Rarenoise Records, as well as playing and recording with metal pioneers Obake. In 2015 he formed the band O.R.k. alongside King Crimson drummer Pat Mastelotto, vocalist LEF and guitarist Carmelo Pipitone from Italy’s cult “anti-folk” band Marta Sui Tubi. 2016 has so far seen Euro and South American dates with O.R.k. and also the release of Colin's adventurous collaboration (as Astarta/Edwin) with top Ukrainian female vocal duo Astarta, drawing heavily but expanding on their earthy Slavic folk roots.

Vinny Sabatino is a first call drummer from Boston, best known for his funky grooves. He's recorded and performed extensively with Jon Durant, as well as with a wide range of artists including current Santana lead vocalist Ray Greene, multiple Grammy winning producer Jeff Bhasker, film composer Michael Whalen and folk artist Porter Smith. His band, Nightshift, is the most in demand band in Boston, and features vocalist (and winner of The Voice) Jermaine Paul, Bassist Barron Browne (Jean Luc Ponty, Steve Smith, Billy Cobham).

In closing Jon has this to impart, “Most importantly, I'd like listeners to actively listen with an open mind. Good speakers or headphones are a particular plus, as there's a lot going on that's worth paying attention to. Our music can take you on a very compelling journey if you're willing to let it.”

Colin adds, “I always believe that people will find their own relationship with any piece of art, music, book or film and it's usually more powerful and meaningful that way, so any messages usually work best when they are to be uncovered and discovered rather than being upfront. If we have successfully created an all encompassing 'sound world' that takes people somewhere else when they hear it, I consider it a success. After all, doesn't music exist to express what words can't?”
