Italian Instrumental Ensemble Armonite Releases Second Album "And the Stars Above"

Includes guest appearance by Colin Edwin of iconic UK prog-rockers Porcupine Tree

Italy - Armonite, the instrumental rock collective led by composer Paolo Fosso and violinist Jacopo Bigi, have released their second album And the Stars Above on LA-based indie label Cleopatra Records.

Armonite's instrumental music is perfectly in line with the spirit of the label, especially now that Cleopatra expanded in the movie industry.

With the film division Cleopatra Entertainment, the company has distributed, developed, and produced several films most of which have a strong horror and/or music component, including The Devil's Domain (starring Michael Madsen), The Black Room (starring Lin Shaye), Halloween Pussy Trap Kill! Kill! (featuring the voice of Dave Mustaine from Megadeth), The 27 Club (featuring Todd Rundgren), England Is Mine (Steven Morrissey bio-pic), A Street Cat Named Bob.

“Working with Cleopatra has been great,” says Fosso, “They're skilled and competent, I'm sure they will take Armonite to the next level. I've always been a great lover of movies and videogames, I was just moving forward to the composition of soundtrack music, so this collaboration comes right on cue.”

As with the previous album, And the Stars Above is an instrumental mix of electric violin, keyboards, bass, and drums with focus on the amazing and powerful electric violin, performed by Jacopo Bigi. Interpreting the music composed by keyboardist Paolo Fosso, Armonite also performs with bassists Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree) and Alberto Fiorani, along with drummers Corrado Bertonazzi, Emiliano Cava, and Jasper Barendregt.

The sound of the album is more oriented to soundtrack music with textures that feel very immediate. “We consume tons of music every day, we can't just stick to one genre”, says Fosso, “generally speaking, the album is rock, but with this idea of soundtrack music.”

Throughout the album, lingers a ghostly female voice, appearing and disappearing here and there before fully emerging in the band's first song with lyrics, “Clouds Collide”. The track tells the story of a girl between time and memories.

And the Stars Above is a journey through 12 tracks, starting with “The March of the Stars” inspired by Dante's Paradise and ending with “Ghosts”. The album also features two bonus tracks: a polyrhythmic piece for piano solo, “The Fire Dancer”, and the String Quartet “A Playful Day”.

“We're confident this is going to be a great release, with a rather peculiar view,” says Fosso, “The Sun is New Each Day had a heavy compact sound... And the Stars Above is groovy, with different vibes across a bunch of genres. There's something indie in this new sound that we've never explored before and it's kind of sexy for us!”

Italian Prog Ensemble Armonite Releases Debut Album “The Sun is New Each Day”

London, UK – Italian prog ensemble Armonite, featuring composer Paolo Fosso and violinist Jacopo Bigi, has released their highly anticipated debut album “The Sun is New Each Day”! Produced by the first producer of Muse, Paul Reeve, and mastered by Geoff Pesche at the prestigious Abbey Road Studios in London, “The Sun is New Each Day” is an exciting mix of electric violin, keyboards, bass, and drums, including amazing participation by Porcupine Tree's bassist, Colin Edwin and Dutch drummer Jasper Barendregt.

“Working with a team like this is fantastic,” says Fosso, composer of the album, “Everyone's unique skills and talents added something special to the album and the final result is powerful. Life and people offer a boundless supply of inspiration. Channeling concepts without the support of lyrics might be hard, but it's also very universal. These songs break down the language barriers becoming visceral and direct. We tried to give the album one sonority, but also characterize each track with a different setting.

“For example, in the song 'Suitcase war' you'll see a rejection of how our life has changed after becoming workaholics. Whereas 'Insert Coin', featuring 8-bit sounds by Swedish demoscener Anders 'Goto80' Carlsson, is a tribute to 80's and 90's arcade coin-ops.”

Each track captures the various passions found in the band. “Satellites” is a reflection on space exploration and technology, “ 'G' as in Gears” features Samuel Gomper's famous speech, “What does the Working Man Want?” and “Die Grauen Herren” recalls the Men in Grey from Michael Ende's novel, “Momo.”

“The Sun is New Each Day” is a whirlwind of sounds, themes and emotions. “Connect Four”, a track composed by Bigi, finds its sound in a protest against gambling addictions. While the track “Sandstorm” is a look at the living energy that can be found in Marrakech.

“We hope the album connects you to the world around you,” says Fosso, “Tracks like 'Le temps qui fait ta rose' from 'The Little Prince' by Antoine de Saint-Exupery suggest 'It's the time you spent on your rose that makes your rose so important.' Yet, the track 'Slippery Slope' explores that unclear side of the human soul.”

London, UK – Italian prog ensemble Armonite, featuring composer Paolo Fosso and violinist Jacopo Bigi, has released their highly anticipated debut album “The Sun is New Each Day”! Produced by the first producer of Muse, Paul Reeve, and mastered by Geoff Pesche at the prestigious Abbey Road Studios in London, “The Sun is New Each Day” is an exciting mix of electric violin, keyboards, bass, and drums, including amazing participation by Porcupine Tree's bassist, Colin Edwin and Dutch drummer Jasper Barendregt.

“Working with a team like this is fantastic,” says Fosso, composer of the album, “Everyone's unique skills and talents added something special to the album and the final result is powerful. Life and people offer a boundless supply of inspiration. Channeling concepts without the support of lyrics might be hard, but it's also very universal. These songs break down the language barriers becoming visceral and direct. We tried to give the album one sonority, but also characterize each track with a different setting.

“For example, in the song 'Suitcase war' you'll see a rejection of how our life has changed after becoming workaholics. Whereas 'Insert Coin', featuring 8-bit sounds by Swedish demoscener Anders 'Goto80' Carlsson, is a tribute to 80's and 90's arcade coin-ops.”

Each track captures the various passions found in the band. “Satellites” is a reflection on space exploration and technology, “ 'G' as in Gears” features Samuel Gomper's famous speech, “What does the Working Man Want?” and “Die Grauen Herren” recalls the Men in Grey from Michael Ende's novel, “Momo.”

“The Sun is New Each Day” is a whirlwind of sounds, themes and emotions. “Connect Four”, a track composed by Bigi, finds its sound in a protest against gambling addictions. While the track “Sandstorm” is a look at the living energy that can be found in Marrakech.

“We hope the album connects you to the world around you,” says Fosso, “Tracks like 'Le temps qui fait ta rose' from 'The Little Prince' by Antoine de Saint-Exupery suggest 'It's the time you spent on your rose that makes your rose so important.' Armonite is an Italian band which generated a big problem for this reviewer in that it was very difficult to properly describe their style. The band originally combined rock and classical music with an instrument line-up that boasted 2 electric violins, keyboards, bass and drums, or at least that was true of the debut release in 1999, Inuit. If we then jump forward to 2015, one of the violinists and the main composer of the music formed a “new” band with the same name. The addition of a drummer and a bass player resulted in the release of the album under consideration in this review, The Sun Is New Each Day, with a more “normal” band line-up. The music has continued to use the classical violin work from the debut release and probably is best held up alongside the jazz fusion genres.

Armonite is a 4 piece band comprising Jacopo Bigi (electric violin), Paolo Fosso (keyboards) Colin Edwin (bass) and Jasper Barendregt (drums) with Colin probably better known, I would think, for his bass playing with Porcupine Tree. There are also 2 guests appearing on the album, Anders “GoTo80” Carlsson (8-bit sounds) and Marcello Rosa (cello).

The Sun Is New Each Day is a 10 track album with a total playing time of around 34 minutes, which is not particularly lengthy and merits being referred to as an EP. All the tracks are of similar length with track 7, “Die Grauen Herren” (The Gray Man), the shortest, with a running time of 2:47 minutes and track 6, “Satellites,” the longest at 3:47 minutes.

The opening track on The Sun Is New Each Day, “Suitcase War” (3:45) jumps out of the speakers from the word “Go” and is led by the superb electric violin playing of Jacopo, ably supported by the other musicians. After the hectic start to the track, and although the track flows well, it never maintained that early promise and at best is satisfactory. At times I could hear similarities to Darryl Way with the manner in which the violin was used. There is a change of style around the 2:20 minute mark which picks up the interest again, but the track never really takes off.
“Sandstorm” (3:44) certainly has a very Eastern feel to it and you could close your eyes and imagine being in the Casbah. Although a different sounding track it still fails to grab your attention properly, despite the skills of the musicians.

“Satellites” (3:47), I found more interesting due to the myriad of changes that the track progresses through. A track that does “grab your ears” and makes you listen.

The final track on the album, The Sun Is New Each Day, “Bastian’s Happy Flight” (3:17) is a driving track that has bite to it and is my favorite track of the album. For once there is a great bit of interplay between the keyboards and the violin and it is, following what has gone before, unexpectedly good, but short.

I found that the album, The Sun Is New Each Day, was a difficult album to really get into. Individually, some of the 10 tracks do grab the interest of this reviewer, but listening to the album through, the good material gets muddied by the more average material and ultimately the feeling I was left with was disappointment. I feel that too many tracks simply lacked a memorable riff or unforgettable hook and it led to the tracks being somewhat indistinguishable from each other.

The musicians are skilled and the idea for the album was sound, but somewhere along the line “the train came off the rails” as they say. I will definitely dip into this album from time to time, but that is all.

As ever, this is a personal view on this album and I would urge you to get a listen to Armonite and you may disagree with me and feel that The Sun Is New Each Day is a worthy addition to your collection.
